Yeah you can, I've never heard of having to be S-Off to be able to change your boot animation before.

Alright, thought I saw a thread somewhere where it said you needed to be. Thanks.
You need to have the system read/write module and matching kernel installed i think as its a system file thats not editable, upon reboot it may revert to original.

Yeah I made my own boot animation only to find out it got reverted. Guess why that's I heard you have to be S-Off.
Not entirely [email protected] soff theres a guide to have the read/write module without soff on here...with that module it should allow for those edits.

I would like to restore my phone to stock so I can install the OTA ICS. Yes, I've searched and read all about ICS but my phone just freezes with the green X. Is there a way to remove CWM (mine is an old version anyway) and restore the phone to the stock recovery?
I read about downloading the stock GB RUU and renaming to PH85IMG.zip and I think I did that but I still have CWM.
Thanks.
EDIT: Oh, and many of the links in the FAQ are dead - like the restore to stock link.
if you ran the ruu, it wouldve overwrote cwm with the stock recovery. a little more details about your current setup would be helpful. you could always install the leak, its the same exact thing...
Use hasoons all in one tool.

Well, I think I did that. It loaded something but there was no change to CWM. Maybe I didn't run the right RUU or ran it wrong. The thread that I tried to use is no longer available. Where can I find the "right" ruu?
As for the setup, it's a rooted phone running an old version of CWM.
I don't have a PC to run the hasoons tool.

Okay, tried again but it doesn't recognize the download which I placed in the root of the SD. I did not rename it this time. I'm guessing it only works when called PH85IMG.zip. That's what I tried before though with no change.

When it finishes loading it should have a list of the contents of the file, then ask you volume up to update or volume down not to update.

Well, that's sort of what I thought but it just goes back to the hboot menu. Nothing happens after it reads the file. There is a progress bar on the right and it progresses as if it's reading, but then just back to hboot.
Bootloader is unlocked. What I've read is that doesn't matter but so far nothing works.
Anyway, thanks for the help. Is there a way to just nuke everything and start over - I only have access to a mac or linux box.
I'm seeing reference in other threads about not getting the install option after the PH85IMG.zip file loads in hboot, but no real solution. There is reference to something called supercid but I don't know what that means.
Has anyone figured out why the PH85IMG.zip file loads in hboot but then just returns to the menu with no option to install? Thanks.
Any idea what to do if stuck in the bootloop?
I tried several roms and kernels but no go.
Roms load fine and I can see boot animation change but the phone restarts in a loop

If you were on GB, those roms won't work, if you're on ICS and you're s-on, use 4EXT, if the problem persist, then you need to flash the boot.img file in the roms zip file manually.
You'll need to learn how to use fastboot if you don't know how to or get someone to write you a script.
Try to reflash stock rom using OTA. may be fix it. I got same problem and solve it by this way

If you can go to bootloader, so use method for S-ON user
-Relock bootloader (fastboot oem lock) (Place the PH85img.zip on sd before locking bootloader if u do not have a card reader.
-Flash leaked ICS RUU in bootloader (rename ruu to PH85IMG.zip, place on external SD card and boot into bootloader)

i just rooted my htc evo 4g lte using htcevohacks method and it did work and i do have superuser access
im on hboot 1.19, my issue is i attempted to flash a kernel using flash image gui since i dont have s-off. I tried flashing the kernel located in the meanbean rom. now my phone boots up but once the white screen goes away my screen stays black. i am able to boot into recovery still and i tried to flash rom zip file but it keeps saying failed. error flashing zip
E:unable to open zip file
is there anything i can do to fix this???
Firstly there is not any reason to flash the kernel separetly on MeanBean it has a kernel installer for s-on phones.
Which version of twrp are you using?

I had a back up and flashed it then changed some apps the tried to flash meanbean back and it would not flash it or anything else. im not sure on the ruu but my hboot is 1.12 if that helps. when I try to power down it says I have no root install su.
Do you still have custom recovery? If so, do you still have the su zip you flashed when first rooting?

A backup of...? Changed what apps and where? That sounds pretty irrelevant. How would it "not flash"? You would know if you RUU'd back to stock or not. You're also making it sound like you were S-OFF and now you're S-ON all of the sudden? That would be the result of an RUU route. Not sure why anything would prompt about being root or not while powering down a device.

S-OFF only goes back to S-ON through RUU. So I don't think you were S-OFF but then again I know nothing of that HBOOT version. Just download the latest CWM/SU, put it in storage, flash it, reboot to ensure root was gained and then try installing MB again.

Unless you manually toggled the security flag back to s-on, I'm pretty sure there is no way to go from s-off to s-on. Not even RUU (other than Viperuu) revert you to s-on.

I do, but the edit would require you to fresh flash the rom again.
It won't take effect after the initial boot up.
Let me know if you want it, and I will post up a zip you can flash in recovery, right after flashing the rom, before you reboot.
