CF auto rooted - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note 3

I rooted a phone for a friend. A sm-n900p, Sprint Note 3 running 4.4.4. Had him back up his stuff and do a factory reset before bringing it over. Used CF auto root to root, let Superuser do it's thing. Install root checker and all is good.
He installed wifi tether off googleplay and all is good. Now fast forward to two days later, his wifi will scan, but finds nothing????
Any ideas to what happen to his wifi?
Thanks

Stock? Custom Rom? If custom rom which one? Has he try uninstalling the wifi tether app from the playstore and rebooting? To see if its the app thats interfering with things.

Yeah, stock root and no custom recovery. Only extra is the wifi tether. He's at work so I don't know all the details. Phone is new to him, (used). I even question if the wifi was working before hand?

Access to a pc with odin? I think you might need to install a custom recovery. Was it rooted when he got it? Was knox counter tripped?

All great questions. Yes, I used odin off the computer. I'm still in rookie status with this stuff as I did not look to see if it had been violated before me....LOL
So you're saying a custom recovery can make or break the operation of the phone?

Quick update, he said he uninstalled the wifi tether but did not restart. So I had him do that and call me back. He sent a message it worked.
So.........thanks Goat for your input. I sent cudo's your way.

**warning** back up ur sdcard since it formats it.
use gladenable for sideloading and tethering.
Ok so I fixed the Tethering problem because i just had to reset the adapter in my laptop and all is good now. It worked before so it couldnt have been the driver problem.
gingerbreak isn't working for me. it just sits there for 10 minutes and doesnt do anything.

i had same issue.. then i realized u need an EXT sdcard for it to work.. process only takes maybe 2 minutes.
ooooh! its working normally now. Thank you
I get a message that my account is not set up for wifi hotspot no matter what APN I use. I used to be able to switch APNs, then switch back, and the hotspot would start. After the 4.1.83 update this isn't working.
Is there something I'm missing here?
Can I root 1.8.3 if I never rooted my device before? I am at 1.8.3.
According to Moto downgrading from 1.8.3 is not a good idea.

Yes u can. I have also updated and flashed back to 4.1.57 and updated back to 4.1.83 and rooted using gingerbreak

Yes, with gingerbreak
Once you update to the latest Atrix 4G release, do not downgrade to a previous version or you will lose functionality. A file system change was made to improve data integrity (for the technically inclined, journaling was enabled on a partition). Once updated, the change cannot be undone through flashing.
Is it safe to flash back?

[Q] Root access disappeared....sort of??

Sorry for the subject. Didn’t know how to summarize what happened.
I rooted my phone successfully about a year ago. It worked fine, no problems. A few months later I went to use the WiFi Tether app, and it said tethering started with errors. When I clicked the error it said - Wi-Fi Tether has been denied by SuperUser permissions.
I immediately logged into Titanium Backup Pro and it said root access has failed, followed by this error: Sorry, I could not acquire root privileges. This application will *not* work! Please verify that your ROM is rooted and included BusyBox, and try again. This attempt was made using the "/system/bin/su" command.
I really haven’t had time to troubleshoot this before, but I have a few days free and was bored. However it's been so long that (1) I can't remember what steps I took to root it the first time, and (2) I’m not sure how to fix it from this point? I started researching how to update to Jellybean, but I need to figure this out before I possibly brick it trying JB.
I'm a little confused as to why a root would no longer work out the blue? Does the carrier (Sprint) send updates similar to iOS? What really confused me is when I power down and plug in the power cord, I still get that black screen, green font, which prompts me to reboot, boot from SD, etc. Assuming that means I can use that screen to boot a ROM and try to re-root it?
I'm a bit lost and not sure where to start...again.
First of all check superuser application.

Whenever this happened to me I just typically reflashed. I think it's a kernal thing. I'm not too sure, but after updating everything all was better. I think I flashed a different kernal by this point. Hope this helps.

Dumb question, but the kernal is the ROM, correct? I'm not even sure which one I used. Sad, huh? Any way I can see that through that initial screen or through Titanium?

Kernals are separate from the Rom, stock has their own, developers had custom ones as well. You can see the kernel type you have in about phone. If a Rom comes with a kernel, they usually point that out. Look into it. I'm not 100% knowledgeable on it.

There are a few other methods...but I don't know them...I do know the other methods safety and security was questionable... Hence saferoot was made by trusted devs here...it should work...all the posts I have seen said they got successful root...did you open the supersu app that was installed and allow it to update binaries?... That is a very important step...if you did then make sure if you try this method again you follow each step it tells you...I don't know exactly how the process goes as I'm on4.2.2 and have to use the all in one tool for root...good luck...if it doesn't work hopefully someone who can help will chime in

Nope, I have no idea what these applications do, but a quick search on the forums basically leads to the conclusion that they're not ready for 4.3.
Given the build you're running, you're stuck with SELinux Enforcing since you can't replace the kernel. You'll need to find something else to do whatever you're trying to do.

Allow hotspot tether on rooted NK1...

FYI. Under NC5, I was able to use the standard hotspot to tether by using Wanam Xposed's "Disable Tether Provisioning." That didn't work after an upgrade to NK1. But, the good news is that the X Tether Xposed module does seem to work fine.
(FoxFi didn't work under NK1, either)
so wait does nk1 use the same root method as was suggested for ng6? (use nc5 kernel, root, ng6 kernel, reboot)
Be nice if someone can make a zip to use the built in tether like nc5

Worked sorta
I was able to Root using the steps in the link above, flashing down with Odin, towelroot, flash back up.
However, the .zip linked above did not work for me. It is saying "Footer is wrong, signature verification failed" to both things it is trying to install.
I am on NK1 (i545vruf-mk1) 4.4.2
Really, the only thing I want to do is get Tether up and running. Any help with that would be appreciated!

I used Odin to flash the firmware from NK1 down to NC1 (I think), to towelroot, than back up to NK1.
All that went fine, and root is working fine. I used no-bloat to remove a bunch of stuff and have used SuperManager and SQLite Editor to edit stuff that I would need Root to do. The phone is rooted, and I didn't use safestrap.
Do I need safestrap to load these .zip modifications for Wifi / Tether? Seems like they are supposed to load direct from recovery mode. Am I wrong?

Ok, I have never used SafeStrap, but I have it installed on my phone, and I have the .zip files still. Anyone have a guide thats a little more explicit than, "Now install it?"
EDIT:
NM, using XDA Modules, I grabbed X Tether and it works like a champ! Thank for the direction though!!!
Their is a way to enable the tether without safe strap but involves a lot more knowledge of unzipping and file permissions or you well end up with boot loop.
On my daughter's phone I just installed safe strap 3.72 installed the zip then uninstalled safe strap. Works great on hers and mine even adds the toggle you can turn it on and off.

Yes, it works fine. Just make sure to have a shortcut to towelroot on your home screen. With the nc5 kernel flashed it's only moments until reboot / lockup. But with the shortcut there I was able to root, reflash the nk1 kernel and update SUPERSU binary and all root apps are working fine.
A hack to get native tether going would be great. Let me know if anyone has a way to do this.
Thanks

I didn't test it to much since my goal was to get back down to kitkat I had enough of lolipop after 5.0.1 so when 5.1.1 hit I hit my breaking point with it.
When I flashed the MK2 loader + Modem than flashed custom recovery and than flashed the "UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.37.zip" than flashed back to OD1 loader+Modem to boot back into 5.1.1 to backup some stuff Root seemed to be working. The SuperUser app didn't showup anywhere outside of the app manager but Titanium backup asked for root I granted it and it's root functions seemed to work perfectly.
Random glitch for me? Maybe, I thought about testing it out more but really I was in a rush to get back to KitKat. XD
