Hi Themer,
I was thinking, it might be a lot easier to develop themes on the PC, then simply transfer the zip to the cell phone and install it. Is there by any chance a PC application for this, or is one being considered? I understand that the program would need to know about the phone... what's installed, characteristics, etc... but I find using the phone to develop the theme and navigate the options a lot more cumbersome than a PC based point and click approach.
Thoughts?

Hi Marc,
It's a good idea and we've been speaking about the concept in the office. However, it's going to take a vast amount of time and other resources in order to do this, all of which we don't currently have. Hopefully next year we might have new options though
- Marco
Thanks for the consideration. Meanwhile this weekend I'll try developing a theme of my own...

I am trying to use a Photoshop to make lock rings for sense 3.0 , but having a ton of trouble actually making the rings. I know how to get them on my phone and make them work, but like I said I have no clue on how to create the rings. I am using gimp and/or adobe cs5. Any help, guide, or tutorial would be great!! Thanks in advance to anyone!

Maybe ask somewhere more fitting? Like the general xda forums or on a photo editing forum? This really isnt a thunderbolt question and asking in the thunderbolt forums, you're getting a very small scope of. You're most likely never going to get a (good) answer here imho.
Gimp and ps are not programs that you just install and use like email. There are a lot of techniques to learn before you can just sit down and create something you envision. I would suggest checking out some of the tutorials online to get a feel for the program, then its just trial and error until you become familiar with it. I've been using gimp for years and still find new ways of doing things. Sorry I didn't answer your question, but stick with it and expect a lot of mistakes, with patience you'll eventually be able to create anything you want.
You might want to attach an image of what you are trying to do, I bet someone will give you a hand.
So I'm going to try to start doing some dev work. I feel like my programming and hardware background is sufficient enough that I should be able to pick it up fairly quickly especially with some of the tools I've already found.
Question for the existing devs working on the note...
Are you using a tool like Custom ROM Creator Studio or are you doing it by other means? I looked and there doesn't appear to be a book I could read to help me along like I've done in the past with other languages/etc. Are you doing it directly through a linux box? I have a lot of questions as I am beginning this process but for now I have to go off of what I find through google and here. So any help or direction would be appreciated. Thanks!
Edit: I'm currently reading through the documentation at source.android.com
If you don't get and responses I would suggest searching in the general forum area of xda, I found good info on developing there when I was thinking about it.

Searching through the general forum now. Finding a lot of device specific stuff, specifically HTC. I'll keep looking though. Thanks for the tip!
Still doing my homework...any teachers that can tell me what homework I should be doing would still be nice
I admire your courage. Best of luck. We need more devs.

I'm setting up my dev environment on my mac now. With some time (and maybe some luck) I can start moving on this. I'm going to have to set up the same environment on my mac at home as well so I can play around there too. I didn't realize that I'd have to set up such a huge virtual machine to do the development on my windows machine. Didn't really want to give up all that space.
I love my note but want that power that those devs have! Back when I was on my Galaxy S II I went nuts trying to find the one ROM that had everything I wanted but could never find that one ROM that suited me. I have to admit that is my driving force for wanting to develop. Obviously I'll be happy to share what I do (if I really am able to do something) and even support what I release because thats what a good dev does
I've been programming since I was 12. Taken some college courses but dropped out because I knew more than the instructors and was bored out of my mind. Ended up with a job at that university! Now I'm just hoping I can pick up the android os like I was able to pick up everything else.
Hey guys,
After doing a bit of research, I'm having some troubles. I would like to learn how to theme, but most of the guides and stuff that I come upon are pretty old (1-2 years), and I'm afraid they would be out of date.
Does anyone have any good, current sources where I can learn the ins-and-outs of theming?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1320891 Check this tread out they have a lot of different subjects on how to theme. The issue is going to be modifying sense 4.0 since there is not much there can be done yet till there can be an update to the m10 decompiler. Hope this helps you, sorry if not much help.

That is the last I know Diamondback says it will be about 2 weeks for him to release the update for the decompiler but there is not a specific date but the good news is that soon we will have something to work with.
When I look at the ultimate guide to theming, which I have a couple of times, the first thing it mentions is stericsons apk signer. However, when I go to that thread he says that you can't sign apk's with windows 7. Is that true? If so, how do I work around it?

I am not sure what guide you are referring to, but I know it works on Vista and XP and I believe I have gotten to sign on W7 but not sure I rearly use that for themeing. I have used apktools and apktools manager so I have not tried stericsons signer.
Hi, I'm really new to android developing, i want to make a very simple app, you open it and you get the other people using the app position, in a range of 50 meters from you. Maybe everyone could update a picture of himself that will be displayed where he is, so like a marker to indicate his position. Then if you click on one of this marker/photos you can see some details that the user put in when he registered. Is it possible for a newbie to do it? I think I obviously will need a server and help. Can you please tell me what sould i do, how much will I spend, etc, and like a to-do list?
thanks in advance.

Student of android dev here!
What your asking for is pretty complex. If you dont have much experience coding or creating apps, i would suggest practicing by making other smaller apps and then building up to then.
You can also hire somebody else to do it, how much it would be would depend of their skill and exactly what features you want on it.

Ok, but is it possible to create an app like that with the right amount of skill? Will I, after plenty of tutorials be able to do it?
Anything is possible. Practice makes perfect! Or near perfect
How are you .. I don't know if iam in the right place to ask my question ... I apologize if iam in the wrong place ... I have a question ... There are many programs we know who flash the phone and repair phones... And more other operations ... How this work? How we can link Between the commands of the program in Windows and the phone .... For example, there are programs whitch flash the phone ... Like the program Odin ..flashtool ..., how do I program an application to does the same task? ... How do I program my own program to flash the phones and other commands like factory reset the phone.... and what programming language is required for that?
There are many ways to approach this. My recommendation is to take a step back & start learning Programming because that is how programs for all the different devices are created & even then, there are may different programming languages.
You could start here: Breaking Into Startups
If your looking for someone to make a program for you, you could consider paying someone to make the program. Good luck!

It is a method you could use, I myself haven't done much with any especially Android stuff. But what I can tell & if I'm correct, you are looking to just build a script via commands, adb commands. Go through some past tools you've used, decipher them in your own way of understanding & give it a shot. Most of everything here is Open Source to where you have the ability to break it all down. Take the time, give it a shot, something I'm gonna try myself here soon.

I do, to me, it's... It's about what you want out of this. Which is where I leave you off. This question to me is not really something that someone can just tell you how to do, what your asking is for someone to do the work for you. I can understand that one. Let me break all this down.
Programming is essentially 0's & 1's. But we have programming languages that makes it easier than just typing in the 0's & 1's, using keywords really. Example would be the adb or fastboot command. Now to go farther, there are some of the "popular" posters that have essentially made a script to help condense all the adb/fastboot commands for all the users. See, were at the bottom of the pyramid & again, you just have to dig to your old sources or new sources & piece all the commands yourself & if you really want to understand how it works (where the fascination happens), then at this point you truly learn & grow from this point. If you're asking for someone to tell you how to do it, then your just going to really cheating yourself & overall cheating.
My recommendation, find what your really passionate with this & break it down. If you want the spotlight as well, your going to need to do that but there is also the determination factor through all this as how, how determined are you really with what you want to achieve? Where are you wanting to go? Brother, we all have a journey & this is you.
As for me, I know all this but haven't applied it because I have a life:
-A Daughter
-Full Time Job
-Part Time College
Now to add in the mix, my hobbies of to-do:
-LG V20 (Unlock with AOSP + Root)
-Amazon Kindle HD 10 7th. Gen (Unlock with AOSP + Root)
-Arch Linux on Laptop
These up here are my hobbies which I'll jump to & even to take a step farther, I plan on having them all connected to where I can manage all I need to from each device. It's crazy but what sucks is the amount of time we get on God's green earth.
Now with that, whatever your goal is, I hope you can achieve it. If you need some type of mentor to explain from a different perspective, I'll be willing to help when I can. If you ask someone to do the work, don't expect someone to give you the answers unless you pray to God & well, yeah, he's gonna tell you basically the same thing I will. If you just need a tool or a cheat because your focusing on something else in your life as I am, pay someone or find a way to explain it easier in the specific category. Good luck brother
