so now that some people have this device, how smooth does the text look? no more pentile pixel layout should mean a gorgeous superb looking screen. my mouth is watering at the thought of OLED pixels without the fuzzy text look of the super amoled screens.
how do web pages look? small text, and text in general? is it really noticeable over the first galaxy s and nexus s screen?
To me it looks great

does the screen look more pixelated than on the original galaxy s
it should look LESS pixelated than the galaxy s, but i dont know. that's what i'd like to know though.
wish there was some way to show close up smoothness of the screen to others out on the web thru pics or something, but its hard to do. maybe some close up shots?
you can always put a tiny droplet of water on the screen to magnify the pixels and take a pic.
Hi,
I have asked this question in a few other threads as well but I have some gradient issues which however doesn't appear to be a generic issue as I've not seen anyone else complain about it.
Text is as sharp as you would expect a screen of this size to be (I'm coming from the 4" LCD of X10i). Its slightly less sharp than the LCD but nothing unexpected.
Contrast is superb as are the viewing angles!
My display however shows colour banding as you can see in the grey background of the NeuralNet WP snapshot I uploaded (Sorry for the quality, its my X10)
Anyone else with this issue?
let me just dig out my SLR and take a picture of my screen, I too have "banding" but it's no worse than any other LCD/LED screen I've used.
It's certainly not something I can say I've noticed without actually looking for.

The banding is much worse than on my old Galaxy Spica (24bit LCD), but the overall screen quality is amazing and I don't notice the banding most of the time.

Could it be that people coming from LCD displays are more sensitive to the banding effect?
When I compare the display with my X10i (LCD), the effect is apparent!
Aargh.. the display is so awesome .. why the doggone banding!!!
I played with a SGS2 for 20 minutes today. I was extremely bothered by the pentile on the original, so much that it's one of the main reasons I got rid of it.
Happy to report that there is NO pentile whatsoever on the new version and it looks exactly like a 4.3" 800x480 LCD does, but with SAMOLED Plus colors and contrast Pixels are pixels, like they should be.
I haven't had the Galaxy S, but my girlfriend uses the iphone 4, and I would say the Galaxy S 2 whups the iphone 4 on screen quality ( not resolution ) but over all clarity of images, web pages is alot better ( in my opinion. )
This screen is much better bcause of its real stripe matrix. Compared to a friends iPhone 4 a couple of nights back, particularly in terms of text in the browser. Text on the iPhone is definitely better with its pixel density, but the difference really is not that great at all - he was actually really surprised when I told him the actual resolution, because he thought they looked so close in terms of clarity!

I'd bet a lot of money that it IS only 16 bit color right now. Samsungs other amoled screens were only 16 bit color when they came out on the nexus one etc.
I had a Galaxy S and compared them side by side.
There's no question about it - the S II looks ten times better than the original. There's no more of the graininess, and despite the slightly lower pixel density it appears sharper as the fuzzy edges caused by PenTile are gone.
Colours are also smoother since the slight graininess is gone.
HI All
Now we have time to play with our new phones, what do you guys think of the screen and most importantly the sub pixel count , what a difference that has made
For a long time the screen res has ment a lot to me as I wanted a phone with a high res display like the iphone 4 for but without the constraints of Itunes.
Now I feel Samsung have done done them self proud, even the Apple fanboys at Engadget gave it SG2 a very good review.
but what do u guys think ..
does it look sharp....
are the colours amazing
when u zoom in does the text look sharp
have u compared it to an Iphone 4 screen and said... yeah mine looks better( the phone nothing else )
does the adjustment of the colour ( Backgrounf Effect) make the colours look more realistic and not the oversaturated look as befor on the SGS
Please read and comment as I love my screen on the SG2 and think Iphone 4's screen is amazing and a quite a high benchmark to beat and has it been beaten or SG2 needs improvments

I'd say this is good, retina better, but 720 & 1080p as some people are asking for is totally over kill. Do pixels really bother you that much?

Slightly brighter than my SGS 1 .

iPhones screen is better, and video is clearer on iPhone 4 because of the screen. but this is still the second best screen in my eyes.
if res is everything to you get the gs3 when it comes out, it should have 300dpi screen, so iPhone won't have any advantages left in it's pockets.
root and change dpi size to 182
It will look awesome.

Videos dont look better on the iPhone for a number of reasons, the main one being the puny size of its screen. For a start its too small, its also the wrong shape making anything you play either letterbox badly or crop. The iPhone also cant handle high bitrate HD MKV movies like the SGS2 can.
Its not all about resolution with screens. I think as a package the SGS2 screen beats the Retina.

agreed! the native support for avi, mkv etc and the vivid nature of omled is brilliant.

Xperia has a nice HD screen..
Both units are at full brightness.
angles on the samsung is much much better..
Blacks are better...
i will do a comparison with Iphone 4S later on...

No. I'm glad the Sony uses a more natural-colored LCD screen than the day-glo, turqoise-tinted AMOLED of Samsung.
any video footage of these phones running side by side?
haha I think my friend you're dreaming that Samsung Display kicks Sony's Ass, I compared the two displays and XPS Display is more vibrant in colours and it's very nice to look onto.
My opinion is...
Samsung Amoled Plus display on SGS2
Pros:
- Best contrast
- Beter viewing angles
- True black
Cons:
- Too much color saturation
- Yellow tinting problem
- Too low resolution for such a big display (217 ppi)
Sony Bravia HD display on Xperia S
Pros:
- More natural colors
- Razor sharp definition (342 ppi)
- Very good contrast
Cons:
- I feel whites are slightly on the yellow side
- Poor viewing angles (although better than many LCDs, but behind IPS displays)
Everyone just choose your poison
I still can't find the perfect LCD..... although for me IPS is the closest so far, if HTC One S had SLCD2 I'd probably have waited for it.
honestly, I don't understand why everyone is complaining about poor viewing angle, its your phone, think of the viewing angle as a benefit for more privacy.

Maybe I don't have anything to hide in my phone, but it bothers me more the fact that tilting the phone a few degrees can change the colors than someone trying to watch my screen
super amoled is good but samsung is like a toy or cartoons and its UI..XPS is HD the best resolution display on market today besting iP4s and GNEX..sound quality is 100times better than on samsung especially when using headset its same level as beats audio.the UI is refined and it looks formal/professional like iphone has...viewing angle is not a big issue, im not using my phone at side ways anyway hehehe..Build quality is superb its not wide so it fits in hand comfortably not like other phones. NFC smart tags rocks and sony made a good one with this making the NFC useful in other ways..

Yeah! Me too, viewing angle isn't a big issue, we don't need it every time.
But now we can see the White Magic display on Xperia P is very good!
In future that'll come with all Sony's phones ?

Well after using the phone for a week now I find the discussion about viewing angles in my perspective a non issue...
Sent from my Sony Xperia S (LT26i)
I dunno,
I don't ever look at my phone from an angle, nor do I have people gather around my phone to watch a video. We have TV's and movie theaters for that.
I couldn't care less about viewing my phone from the side.
I agree viewing angle is not an issue on the XS. My experience having both the galaxy s2 and XS is that the screen on the XS is significantly better than the galaxy. The clarity of fonts is exceptional, and the outdoor performance in sunlight is also much better. The S2 is terrible in sunlight, and only really came into it's own watching videos in a dimly lit room.
I think this video will have a clear view on which screen is better..
http://youtu.be/L7KPTYPpOVU
Arc S and SGS 2
View angle is not too bad in XS but i not fancy whether someone sitting next to me in the meeting, reading my confidencial mgs with my girlfriend " talking about last night " better if the viewing angle are not that great
Is it ?
I dont have an issue with viewing angels.
Besides that, i don't like the oversaturation on those AMOLED screens.
Colors are just way to vibrant.
And another thing, XS is alot better viewable in sunlight.
I like the deep blacks with an AMOLED display but aside fromt that i couldn't really give a monkeys toss about viewing angles. Have to say i'm impressed by how well the Xperia S screen fares out in the open and in direct sunlight.
This XPS is such a premium device, great built/design and at last a android phone which has better Display than that retina display of iPhone, superb camera, great audio output both on speaker and headset, and i think the best UI for android phone very impressive and smooth UI and animations..
Got the Samsung GS2 and Sony Xp S. strange that i see sony S screen beets S2 in many ways, even my friends agree with me , like if amoled not that big deal after all, cos LCD still can handel it !! Nd HTC Sensation Xe screen is no mach for the xperia S!!
I think ppl should see both in real eyes not from recording via youtube !!!
try to take some sampels and post them !
Id like to ask, does anyone know if there are going to be any tweaks coming out that are for the S3's still's camera?
I personally find that if i'm shooting pics in my garden, that the grass looks luminous green, and over-saturated.
Now, not starting a war here - i sold my 4S to get an S3, but i do find the S3 images a fair bit less realistic than my old iPhone

If you are looking the images on your phone, it's because of the Super AMOLED screen...
It tends to oversaturate colors, thats normal.
But I know that the camera also oversaturate colors a little bit, nothing big, but it does.

there are a tweaks already available for download that enhances the audio and video bitrate as well as added physical buttons for still images...have a search around.
Just change the many camera settings already available on the handset before shooting...

i agree that the super AMOLED screen makes the image look over saturated. Looks great on the phone screen but poor once you open the file on a computer. I like to experiment with different settings and then touch up the images in post. just keep in mind that lighting is on your side, you just have to know how to manage the amount of light taken in by the camera
I'm still testing out the features and hope to get a good setting but honestly i find that my photos using my old HTC Sensation were better quality.
Also, i have edited the media_profiles.xml file and increased the bitrate, that is my tweak. anything else would be on the user.
First off anyone claiming iphone 4s photos are more realistic than photos on s3 is telling a few porkies especially if they use Hdr on 4s as that makes iphone pics look as unreal as it gets. Secondly the photos on s3 blow the 4s away regardless of the mythical over saturation of colours.
Take any pics on s3 and ip4s side by side on auto in a variety of situations and I guarantee the iphone pics will be sub standard 99 percent of the time, colour balance or no.
Sgs3 takes as good photos as my cannon powershot 14mp easily.

Really you think the Sensation took better pictures?
I have a HTC Sensation and the picture quality from this phone is shocking in all but the best daylight conditions, and even then it's no match for the S3 or the S2 for that matter, as for video quality on the Sensation not even gonna go there lol

Hi guys, I noticed while viewing some pictures that when I switch on X Reality the pictures are over saturated and the colors come out and punch ? your face ☺. Can we ge this over saturation in the normal use like in the UI, wallpaper and everywhere? Wondering that if this is possible it would make Xperia Z2's display would be the best in the world.

it can but it takes alot of tinkering infact, and even then it would cause a extreme amount of lag
X-reality only works in the album because it takes a picture and processes it making the picture sharper and more vibrant. doing that takes a moment, its a slightly heavy process.
there are other methods of making your display more vibrant but i do belive those require an unlocked bootloader and/or root
