Nexus 9 USB OTG Support problems - Nexus 9 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone,
So I have been experiencing and interesting issue(or maybe simple lack of support) with USB OTG on the Nexus 9 that I own. First off, I have been using keyboard, mouse, and xbox 360 controllers with the same cable on my Samsung Galaxy S4 running a AOSP(4.4.4), and Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 variant of Gummy ROM without any issues. Lone behold, on my Nexus(running stock 5.0.1 OTA), the only devices it's seems to support as of present are removable media(i.e. USB flash memory/hard disk drives). I am wondering if this a bug, or misconfiguration on my part(maybe I am overlooking a setting), and since I intended on using the controller support for emulation purposes this would be a deal breaker and I would have no other choice but to return the device. Keep in mind I have tested the cable/controllers/mice/keyboard on my S4, Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 and my roommates HTC One without any issues, leading me to believe this is either a hardware, or software limitation. Thanks again, for any advice or help you guys/girls maybe able to offer me !

microUSB > USB HOST adapter [working]; microUSB > HDMI adapter [not working]

Hi guys,
1) I bought Nokia USB OTG HOST cable like this, and it works very well
2) I also bought Samsung Galaxy S2 HDMI adapter like this,
to try on Sony Tablet S.
Unfortunatelly (as I thought) - its not working.
So anyone who thinks about buying one - don't buy it(for now).
Maybe someone knows if other adapter would work?
Maybe HDMI support via microUSB port could be added
in software, of course after we will get root?

I too would also like to know if this would be possible. If i root my Sony S tablet would that help,or there is a custom rom i could flash to my Sony Tablet to enable the use of a micro usb-to-HDMI cable for video/audio output to my 42"LCD TV. I only ask bcuz none of my TV's are wifi/DLNA capable & Id like to use the Sony tablet for streaming Netflix to my TV's. I recently upgraded to the Epic 4G Touch/Galaxy S II & i would rather use my tablet for streaming than my Galaxy S II. Thanks for any info
It would be pretty cool to play a nice graphics game on the Tablet S with it displaying on the 42 monitor!

Folks, this tablet does not have HDMI out. Even when it's possible to root it, that won't help.

Galaxy S2 doesnt have HDMI out, and work with adapter. How can you be so sure that its not possible?
Hi Condi,
While the Galaxy S2 doesn't have an HDMI socket like you'd have on your TV, it does have the electonics required to do HDMI over microUSB. Unfortunately the Sony doesn't have this because Sony decided to use DLNA instead, mainly because their TV's have this functionality.
I did quite a bit of research on this subject before buying this tablet and confirmed it with Sony UK.
Sadly it's pretty typical of Sony to build their gadgets to work best with their own devices. Another example of this practice is the proprietory power connector that means you have to use their £30 power adaptor, which is pretty pricey for a mobile power adaptor if you ask me. It also means there is currently no car charger for it, which is extremely annoying too.

[Q] Hooking up a USB keyboard to a Nook Tablet

It is my understanding that android natively supports usb. My question is, if I get a micro usb to usb adapter, and then plug in a usb keyboard, I would be able to use the keyboard to type documents. Any thoughts?
(I have a rooted nook, but I got the update before I could block them, will revert back soon)
currently no. The android or in this case nook skinned android kernel has to support usb host and usb keyboard inputs which it doesn't. But it probably will in the future when the devs release android 4.0, because ICS needs a different kernel then the current nook tablet kernel. But anyway what keyboard do you have, because you can only connect bluetooth keyboards and also only if the developers can enable bluetooth on the nook.
It also depends on the hardware support. I don't know if the TI chip has a host-only port, or if it supports OTG (On-The-Go) dual mode operation. It probably does, but I've not seen anybody verify that.
it doesn't support USB keyboards. I have a female USB to micro USB for my galaxy S2. I tried to get a USB sick and 2.4GHz mouse and keyboard on the nook but nothing worked, and yes it both works on my galaxy with the stock ROM

The NT can support usb gadgets and usb hubs but it need to be enabled in the rom and the must have the module, the NC has this feature and i hope our great devs can implement this on the NT.

im looking to use a usb 3g modem myself with my tablet ,
ive read a bit on the latest engadget article about the other older e paper nook that was done with a usb keyboard i even went as far as to contact the guy who did it and he told me what to look for , hardware wise to see if the NT could do it ,
yet without kernel support or the module being compiled into the kernel we have already on the tablet , theres not much hope , but i believe it can and will be done , if not im gonna have to get an ipad with a 3g data card in it cause i have to have data access wifi hotspots just not cutting it..

[Q]Docking pad for galaxy s2 to support hdmi, usb and audio out exists?

Hi all,
Imagine: you come home from work, place your Galaxy S2 in your docking pad or station(or w/e its called), turn on the 23"+ monitor and start surfing the internet, listening to music, watching videos/movies - with your docked Galaxy S2 - as a 'PC'
Does such a device exist yet? The dock I'm asking for handles(or should) the following:
- the galaxy s2, charging while docked
- the hdmi monitor
- the usb2.0 keyboard + usb2.0 mouse
- 5.1 or 7.1 audio speakers system
- ethernet port (preffered)
or something similar to this - with the above list - for galaxy s2: http://us.aoc.com/monitor_displays/e2343fi - note the: "with built-in iPhone®/iPod® dock."
Sorry if this was asked before, I've searched but no match. Similar thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1441993&highlight=docking+stand

You will never find a dock which allows HDMI and USB simultaneously. MHL simply doesn't work that way. Only one (either HDMI out, or USB) can be used at a time.
You'll need a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse to achieve this

something similar for galaxy s2? (or s3)
that one works for s3, but it seems the usb slots will not work, hardware limitation on phone?
whats the difference that note2 has and s3 doesnt have, that lets the usb work on note2 but not on s3?
edit: ah, I see, link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_High-Definition_Link#11-pin_MHL-USB_Connector

Yes, I should have been more clear. 5 pin MHL on the i9100 does not support simultaneous USB & HDMI. This is a hardware limitation.
Note 2 and Galaxy S3 have 11 pin MHL.

going offtopic a bit, it seems the s3 11pin is not backwards compatible, so not really MHL, but proprietary(to sell s3 specific accesories), link: http://www.galaxymhl.com/ ... original thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1836822
back ontopic, could the samsung multimedia dock be used with s2?
PS: I hate that I'd have to purchase bluetooth kb+mouse just for that

There are many versions of "the samsung multimedia dock", for many models of Samsung phones. You'll need to be more specific.
And no external dock is going to change the fact that the i9100 has a 5-pin MHL connection, which still will not support simultaneous HDMI out and USB.
As for the off-topic, there are adapters you can get in order to plug an S3 into an existing 5-pin MHL adapter.
EDIT: here's one direct from Samsung.

[Q] Webtop Launcher from Atrix

Hi all,
I'm a noob (longtime lurker), I just wanted to ask the following question: I've been a longtime Windows Phone user and I'm thinking about making the jump to Android.
I was thinking of using the device as an all in one productivity device, with a dock connecting the phone to a monitor, such as this one:
EDIT: Can't post links due to Noobishness, so its the "Aerb® 3in1 Smart Multimedia HDMI Dock Station Desktop Charger Charging Data Transfer & Sync OTG for Samsung Galaxy S4 Galaxy Note 2 Galaxy Note 3"
Now, while the hardware looks great, the implementation seems... clunky at times, but the old WebTop mode from the old Motorola Atrix line seems well suited to something like this.
SO, my question:
Has anyone pulled the WebTop mode from the Atrix lineup and make it available to all Android devices? I saw a story saying that they had gotten it to work over all HDMI connections, so all it would need is some optimizations to work on Android 4.4.2+ devices.
Best,
Sheik

[Q] Has anyone tried MHL with the 7D-501L/503L/501u ?

Hi all,
One of the use cases for a tablet is that it can be used as a light-duty PC replacement.
I intend to use it this way, for some work related stuff. However, to unleash its full utility, it should be paired to a larger display, like 19"+
Miracast does this, but I find that the Miracast on the X1 is a bit choppy. I have a Samsung AllShare dock, and connection is intermittent, with the Malaysia B102 ROM. It was far worse with the initial release ROM.
One of the things I'm thinking is to use an MHL adapter. There are some on the market with built in USB hubs so I can pair this with the X1 and use it as a desktop replacement, for presentation viewing or emails.
Anyway, anyone tried ANY form of MHL adapter on the X1 ?
The original Mediapad (s7-301u) had a micro HDMI port which could be directly used to output.
Thanks all for inputs.
Silly me, there were initial threads saying MHL works.
Just wonder, as there are 2 MHL standards, the earlier one that came with the original Note N7000, and the next version that came with the Note 2 N7100 and later.
Can anyone confirm if the X1 works with the later MHL standard?

There was another thread about MHL:

I can only say I got mine 7D-503L working with MHL adapter intended for Sony Xperia Compact Z1 (MHL v1.0).
I bought a dirt cheap MHL 1.0 adapter for about USD3. Worked on the 7D-501L, but could not work on the Note 4.
