Greetings from sunny ???? notts
Been a long time lurker, but now i am in need of some help.
Had the galaxy s2 for a couple of weeks now and most of the time it works great. but occasionaly it will not recieve calls or sms. i get no notifications of missed calls, voicemail messages etc. to the caller it just goes straight to voicemail. A few hours later i get all? the sms come in at once, sometimes a voicemail notification but no missed calls. when this happens i have a good signal and am able to call out.
Its definately not because i was using data services at the time and not lack of signal.
I have rooted the phone, but still with a stock rom (ke7 ?)
Anyone got any ideas ?
The handset ? The sim card ? or the network ?
All the best

i have the same issue as you ...
the only solution that i found is to set my phone is GSM MODE only but you will loose your 3g/h data and only use EDGE

Lo Rich. Miggy round?(private joke)
Was wondering, was the phone on charge when it missed the calls/texts?
it could be any number of things, really. if your sim card is not fairly new i would replace it just to be on the safe side. you might try hard resetting your phone (which will delete all your info so back it up first) and starting over.
do you have any apps that block data connections at various times? if so i would delete that app and use the phone for a few days without it to see if the issue goes away.
have you flashed a different radio? if so, try the one that matches your rom, or try the newest one you can find.
there are many possible causes, but if i were in your position i would hard reset it and not install any apps that might interfere with your connection to the network and i would make sure my sim card was fairly new. if the issue still persists you might try asking for an exchange if possible.
If upu have the phone on GSM only then incoming calls go directly to voicemail when data bursts are happening (which is often). So switch to 3g to fix.
If you're not on GSM then I have no idea, maybe no signal in that area...
Thanx
Ok theres possibly been a development with this.
But first a big thanx to all your suggestions, and my response to them.
Seems a bit pointless having such a device then crippling some of it just to get the basic phone part to work. although switching to gsm only may be a temporary solution.
Fault occurs either on charge or not.
Fault has occured whilst at home where all data connections are disabled and wi-fi exclusively used. I havent tried flashing a different radio yet, but it is still on the latest ?? ke7 ? firmware. Sim card was brand new a couple of weeks ago.
So gsm only wont help, but as above when at home i use wi-fi.
Now i spoke to my network, talk mobile a few days ago, they say it will take more than 5 days for their IT dept to contact me to try and sort this ! as i can still make calls they dont see it as a major fault ??? Looks like customer care is not important to them.
I have also spoke to the company i purchased from(wish i hadnt as customer DISatisfaction appears high on their list of prioritys)mobiles.co.uk. I was speaking to someone at their Fullfillment team yesterday about getting another handset sent out, but for some reason i couldnt finish arranging it yesterday. Then early yesterday eve one of their guys rang me back out of the blue to say he had been looking into my fault and had found something not quite right with the original connection they had set up. He was honest enough to admit it was a bit beyond his knowledge and was getting someone from the connections dept to help him. they are going to re-do my connection and for me to wait 24hrs for this to be sorted and hopefully it should be ok after that. All credit to Leeroy at mobiles.co.uk.
The only problem now is other than getting someone to ring me every 1/2hr, how do i know if its working or not ?
I guess the best i can do is leave it a while and see if i get any more complaints that people cant get hold of me.
Once again many thanx for all your suggestions, i will update this when i am confident it has or hasnt been fixed.
many thanx
have fun

this happens to me perhaps every other day
i get a txt saying so and so called but left no message
my reception is fine and my phone has been sitting in one place on 3 bars
i call the person and they said they tried to call and it went straight to voicemail
the txt arrives instantly so i am putting up with just calling people back as its not very frequent
plus i have 1200 mins so i need to use them!
I have the same problem and I believe mine has something to do with the way the towers handle the switch from 3g to edge. You said you get a text message showing a missed call, I think that would be usefull to me also until we can get this fixed. Are you using google voice to get your sms, if not what?
I have the exact same problem, and it's beginning to interfere with my work. The HSDPA signal here is very weak. So I switched it to GSM only, which resolved my signal problem, but I keep missing calls. All I get is a sms saying that I missed a call. Would my problems be solved if I had full HSDPA signal the entire time? You said that calls are missed when data bursts are happening on GSM only? I almost never receive a call the first time. Only after ~3 attempts would they get a hold of me.
Any help would be very much appreciated.
Hello All,
I have been looking around and seeing if anyone else is experiencing the same issue I have. But I have not had much luck. I have seen similar cases, but for whatever reason, some of the workarounds found that worked for others have not been successful for myself, or are temporary.
For the past three months, I have been experiencing an off and on issue where I am unable to receive texts, but I am able to send out text. And it is something that I would not realize until people actually notify me, or it is awkwardly silent on the "texting front", which makes me second guess myself. Almost every other week or two weeks this has occurred. At the time, I am running Darky's 8.8 [4.1.2] ROM for the i9300. I have tried rebooting, taking out the SIM, re-flashing Darky and re-flashing Stock (full wipe, etc), and replacing my old SIM with a new one. None have been successful thus far. The only success I have found is that inserting my SIM in a different phones allows the text to flow through almost immediately. I would then place the SIM back in the i9300 and any new texts sent I would receive immediately. After a week or two, it randomly just stops receiving text again, and the cycle continues.
I was wondering if whether this may be a bug with the Android OS itself? I have seen a few posts in regards to SMS being handled by Jelly Bean, but I am not 100% sure if my issue would fall in the same boat. Or if it is possibly faulty hardware? Or some kind of network issue. My network is AT&T, but I'm ruling out a network issue since I am able to receive text almost instantaneously on other phones.
Any information, advice, or help would be greatly appreciated.
Its not a bug .
Usual reason is wrong MMS message centre settings or network settings .

I've verified that the MMS APNs and SMS settings are correctly configured to AT&Ts network. If it were incorrect from the beginning, I would not get text messages (or MMS) at all. But in this case, it is intermittent and only resolved when I get to "unload" the text messages on to another device.
Same thing happens to me (why I had to use my upgrade to buy a phone from them -_-) I'm using a S2 for now... it sucks when you have been on the S3. Their excuse for not being able to help me was "Its an international phone, therefore may not work with our network." That's freaking BS. It worked for 6 months before this issue came up. New micro SIM card is the only temporary solution for now. When I have time. I'm going up there or calling help line. Gonna file a complaint and mention I might be leaving service with them or I can say legal action will be taken since they are denying me a service I'm paying for. They should start helping by them. I don't abuse their services. I don't tether. I don't cheat them in any way. Its retaarded.

Ahh! Thank you b-eock! I don't mean this in the wrong way, but I'm glad that I'm not the only who has experienced this. When this occurred to you, were you on some version of 4.1.2? From what I can remember, this issue never came up until I upgraded from 4.1.1 to 4.1.2. Just trying to find some kind of trend here...
I have had to call up AT&T a number of times regarding this issue. And each time they were of no help. Although they were able to confirm that everything on their end of setup correctly, I got the same BS that you got. And they even gave me the whole baloney that I should upgrade so that they can help assist me better and that since it is not their branded phone, it may not be fully compatible.
I really do not want to give up on this. And I definitely want to find a solution. So I am hoping there is a lucky one out there that has tried different ways of getting fixed. Whether that be trying a new ROM, or downgrading from Jelly Bean to ICS, etc.
Came up a few weeks after I upgraded to 4.1.2 but there isn't really a connection between that. It worked before. Its just random crap. And them telling us everything is good on their end, that's complete BS. They don't know what's going on behind their computer screen.
Same exact thing happens to me. It's ROM dependent i'm thinking. Samsung roms from other countries do it the most for me. Has done it on AT&T and AT&T with StraightTalk. Experiencing it on Purelok HD v3.1 right now. I love this rom but im probably going to go AOSP/AOKP as I don't experience it on those kind of roms.
Camera just isn't the same without the Samsung software to me.
Hi!
Rooted with cmahendra's offline Lelus method (and to anyone who's done that, my hat is off to you).
**SHORT VERSION**
Sim goes into the L9. I get bars that show network availability, however I am not able to connect/make/receive phone calls.
**DETAILED VERSION**
Starts like this: I have my CM rooted Aria that works a-ok as far as the network. Phone message memory getting full all the time and incoming texts bounce back, with no way of knowing who sent them. Can't have that, so I buy a stock L9.
Sim works. I want to have Wi-Fi calling, which is the *only* reason I bought the L9. Wi-fi calling is not working: call up T-Mo and they say I need to give a 911 address and all will be well. Ok, done.
Sim works. But no Wi-Fi calling still. Call up T-Mo and they say "Ohhh! you need a "3G-B" (I don't think that stands for gigabyte) sim card" Ohhh and what's your phone model etc etc. I tell them "it's a no-brand phone I got overseas," they don't need to know the model: they didn't with the CM Aria. They're clicking settings on their screen other side of the phone while we're talking: I can feel it.
Sim *stops* working. Need a working phone, so let L9 aside and get a stock T-mo S2. Same issue, cell network not connecting.
Let me show THEM! Ha! I'll unlock it. Unlocked the S2.
Sim still doesn't work.
Put the Sim back in the rooted/unlocked Aria? Network works.
What settings do they have in their stock phones that disallow network connectivity, because in the CyanogenMod Aria I have the phone fully works, GPS, tether, etc etc. In their stock-from-T-Mobile phones, network = nada.
Thank you for reading.

What the heck are you asking? I don't see any understandable questions in your message. I see you blowing off steam.
It does look like T-Mobile cooked your sim. You may need a new one.
Call them again and ask for "Customer Retention" through the automated system. Those people are more knowledgeable. A new sim should be free if they killed it.
Also, a data plan is not required for wifi-calling.
T-Mobile will give you a SIM regardless. They are always free.
I'm not sure as I am unrooted, but most carriers block network access via files in the EFS folder. This folder is VERY delicate. Anything improperly changed here can render a phone useless. If the SIM works in another device, it's not the SIM. Have you tried a different SIM in your phone?
Also, if you're blocked from network access, when you make a call, you should be prompted with, "We're sorry, but this device has been blocked from network access." If you do not get that prompt, then there is something wrong with the phone itself, be it software or hardware.
Looks like the L9 isn't registering in their system. Where did you buy the phone, blacklisted perhaps?
As for fried your sim, why does it still work in the Aria.
As for 3G-B, you probably need a newer sim, others call it a 4G sim... They should send you one free or pick one up free at a local tmo..
Thanks so far folks...

You hit the nail on the head exactly clockcycle, it's not registering. Something *in* the phone is not letting it connect, because my sim works successfully in any and every other unlocked phone I have, blackberrys, GMS world phones, the rooted Aria, but in the two "newer-released phones-- the L9 and the S2-- it doesn't work.
Phones are legit. Craigslist and brand new. Worked perfectly until calling T-Mobile for "support". The sim is fine and the goal is to keep it and not get a new one. It works.
My strong guess is that if I put a different rom that is *not* stock, the phone will work fine. It worked fine in the beginning, until I called them to address the wi-fi calling issue and they started poking around in my account, asking questions and clicking on things. I didn't want to address the wifi-calling issue too much because we could go off on a tangent.
You're right kevev, it didn't look like there was a 100% clear question. A lot of story though, to make sure there aren't 50 posts of did you do this and id you do that. A full story gives everyone the most info they need to understand the situation instead of "yo! my phone is not connecting!" which we see sometimes .
So the more clear question is:
"I am experiencing carrier settings *in* my L9 that are blocking me from connecting fully to the network on a perfectly fine sim card, how can I get around these settings and what/where are they."
I think tribalartgod understands what I'm getting at most completely. The inside-the-phone-settings. When the sim is in the phone I have bars, but when going to make a call the screen message is "emegency only". Can't try different sims in the L9 because of the need to cut the sim down. Also the L9 is not unlocked, just rooted. My guess is a de-bloatwared rom is the fix. Looking for answers from people more knowledgeable than me which is most likely all of you. Thanks again!
Craigslist, new, boxed, doesn't gurranty they aren't blacklisted.
BUT, the Aria uses a miniSim, the L9 uses a microSim. Did you cut your Sim yourself? It might be misaligned, cut wrong.
It's less than $2 to get it unlocked..
It sounds like its IMEI blocked dude. This can happen with various insurance or installment plan scams, even to brand new devices. There are options to still use the phone, but you are hosed on T-mobile. I have a blacklisted L9 because the previous owner quit paying his EIP, but it's unlocked so I used it on an AT&T MVNO connected to an AT&T MicroCell (I wanted WiFi calling too, but that won't happen with a blacklisted IMEI). Until you've gone to T-Mobile's chat support and ask the if the IMEI is clean, writing long posts in this thread is futile, and it is pretty clear everybody in this thread THINKS they know what they are talking about, but nobody has simply asked T-Mobile about the status of the IMEI, which takes two seconds.
Verizon Samsung Galaxy S4 (SCH-I545), AT&T SIM: very low signal, no picture messaging
I recently switched from Verizon to AT&T, bringing the S4 I had on Verizon. At the AT&T store, they added a new SIM everything seemed to work OK except for a constant "non Verizon SIM" message.
However, upon taking the phone home, or anywhere else, my signal strength is too low to do anything at all. (It worked at the store only because they have an antenna on the top of their building) This is a phone problem and not a network problem as everyone else I know has excellent signal in these areas. The signal strength in my house is -113 dBm, 0 asu. And for the record, my signal strength with Verizon was fine, so this is AT&T SIM specific.
A possibly related problem is that I cannot send picture texts at all. I can sometimes receive them, but it's buggy. Regular SMS texts will sometimes go through, albeit very slowly with many dropped messages, due to the signal issue mentioned above.
The AT&T store has been absolutely worthless in helping me. They did confirm that my APN settings are correct at least.
I rooted the phone because I didn't really know what else I could try. I currently have the phone rooted using Odin, MobileGo, and Supersu using the tutorial found here (I did reflash the kernal back to OF1):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-verizon/general/samsung-s4-i545-verizon-of1-root-t3254434
I basically would like to know what settings I could change to try and fix this issue.
I'm not sure what the forum's policy is on "bumping" unanswered posts, so I apologize if this is inappropriate.
I am really at a loss though as to how to approach or fix this problem. I am rooted but don't know what settings I should play with.
I've bought an unlocked S5 to replace this one since my last post. So I am open to taking some more risky measures to get this now extra phone working (so long as they make logical sense).
Please let me know if there is any additional information I can provide. I am slowly trying to learn more about Android OS and cell phones, but it's a pretty daunting subject.
I have no links for you but search around and investigate the APN settings. Normally MMS issues are due to incomplete or incorrect APN settings on the affected device. It could also be contributing to you signal issues.

Hi, I appreciate your response! I am using the APN settings listed for Android here:
https://www.att.com/esupport/article.html#!/wireless/KB424489
This is about the ONLY thing I'm sure I have configured correctly.
Although I will mention, that if I remove the AT&T SIMM card, the APN settings are removed and the phone defaults back to CDMA/LTE preferred network.
I'm pretty new to both rooting and this website, so I apologize in advance for any newbie mistakes I'm gonna make.
Background:
I have a VS-996 which frankensteined and unlocked by following this post . After doing that I flashed pie and then flashed lineage os from here . That rom wasn't very stable and kept crashing, so I tried others. I wound up going with Havoc OS. I believe it was in 3.4 when I first flashed it. I've kept up with the updates up to 3.7.
The Problems:
Havoc OS works fine for me, very stable, except for some reason phone calls and messages(both sms and MMS) are spotty at best. Sometimes texts won't send at all, or they'll act like they sent but the text won't be recieved. Sometimes my phone will say I can make emergency calls only. Group messages and sending pictures don't seem to work at all, at any time. These issues seem most prevalent immediately after booting my phone up. Data works perfectly except sometimes when the phone doesn't like to register that the SIM is inserted for a little bit after booting up.
What I've tried:
I've tried reinstalling the rom.
I've tried installing different Android 10 roms.
I've tried going through the process again starting at the the Frankenstein method and going from there.
I've tried messing with the apn
If I flash back to a stock pie ROM everything goes back to working perfectly, and I'm using my sim in my old V20 while I try to sort this out, so I know the SIM is not to blame.
I've been unable to find anybody else with this particular problem, though that could just be because the problems cover so many different aspects that I'm not sure exactly how to search for answers.
Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Are you Verizon customer? You say you have VS996.
There's an LOS ROM bug for Verizon SIM card users where upon rebooting the phone you have to make a phone call first to then receive texts. This phone call "registers" the SIM card or whatever. Many people call their voicemail number to satisfy this requirement.
This bug affects all LOS-based ROMs.
Yes I am a verizon customer. I had noticed that making a phone call seemed to help things along when messages wouldn't send. I guess I managed to let my phone die or turn it off enough to hide the fact that it fixed me. Giving it a test just now it seems to be working correctly. I don't know if I'll be happy or mad if the solution turns out to be this simple.

Was noted extensively on LOS-16 ROMs, but not discussed as much with LOS-17 (Android 10) ROMs. But earlier this month someone in the Havoc 3.7 (LOS-17 based) thread did bring it up...

However, the larger problem is in six months you will not be able to use LOS-based custom ROMs with V30 on Verizon.
* As of December 31, 2020 Verizon is dropping 3G CDMA to repurpose bandwidth for 5G.
After that date, to make any phone calls on Verizon you will need VoLTE. No LOS-based custom ROMs have VoLTE. You will need stock Verizon firmware. It can be rooted stock firmware; you can use Magisk modules to add features -- but needs to be Verizon firmware for VoLTE.
* T-mobile users are in the same predicament.
In January 2021, T-mobile will be dropping 3G HSPA for same reasons. T-mobile users will need VoLTE, which only comes with V30 stock firmware. However, T-mobile is less stingy. They also allow US998 firmware to have VoLTE and Wi-Fi calling with T-mobile SIM. Whereas Verizon requires Verizon stock firmware, and it needs to have been activated on a phone with Verizon IMEI at some point.
* AT&T will also eventually drop 3G HSPA -- but not until February 2022 (18 months from now).
So, for U.S. V30 owners who wish to run custom ROMs a little longer, you should check out AT&T Prepaid. It's a lot cheaper than "regular" AT&T, but is only for people who own their phones.
18 months is a long time. Anything can happen in 18 months!
AT&T only gives VoLTE to AT&T IMEI phones, as well as iPhones and some other phones I would never own. I've never used an AT&T branded phone on AT&T. I'm an AT&T customer with three native US998 for myself, my wife, my mother -- so I'll cross that bridge when I come to it in February 2022. Will probably give my mother an AT&T V35. Maybe my wife, too. Also, LG may get their act together and produce a good phone fro the LG V70 or LG V80.
Any Verizon, T-mobile (and Sprint), and AT&T MVNOs (Straight Talk, Ting, etc.) will also be affected by these decisions.
I have a more extensive discussion of this issue here:
All U.S. V30/V3O+/V30S will need stock firmware, not LOS-based custom ROMs. When?
