And no matter how many times I do a system or full wipe when my phone finally boots it goes into the android is upgrading screen. It hasn't done this before and It just started doing this about a week ago and I can't make it stop. Anyone have any idea what may be going on?

It does this at every reboot even after the first boot? How many apps optimize? It eventually does boot, correct? If it eventually boots, take a logcat right after bootup and post.

It only does it after I install a new ROM. Just the first boot. I'm doing a full wipe several times and then installing the ROM and gapps and as soon as the ROM boots it shows the android is upgrading, counts up the number of apps then goes into the setup wizard. All previous apps and data are gone but I can't figure or went it's showing me the upgrading message after every new ROM install.

This is normal whenever you install a new ROM. You're doing a full wipe. This is nothing new or strange. Basically, you've wiped the phone and it has to recompile all the apps (whether it's Dalvik or ART). It only occurs on the initial boot after flashing to a new ROM when you do a full wipe.

Personally, when I have issues with a ROM:
I download the zip again (put it on in the sdcard folder)
reboot into CWR
wipe the cache
go to advanced and wipe the dalvik cache
wipe the system
go into format and ensure the wipe /system
install the rom
let the phone boot, don't touch anything, just go watch a tv show or something, (15m+ to be super nice)
reboot the phone, enter your information/basic settings, when it's done with all that, i let it settle again and reboot it before installing any apps or playing with the market
i've found that this is the "safest" way to install a ROM.
do you need to be this anal retentive? no.
will skipping these require you to re-install the rom again? occasionally, but not always
as always: most ROMs have their own installation instructions that should be followed!
Multi-Quote didn't work for me for some reason, but I was referring to @Zeej's instructions.
I agree here! This always get's the job done for me! I haven't had ANY 10.6 bugs, but I do like that it can be flashed right over top of previous v10 versions instead of having to worry about titaniumbackup etc... to reinstall everything!
Hey guys, I am quite new to this flashing roms, kernals, etc.. I am not a novice when it comes to general programming, just to the mobile devices. Well, I installed Jellyverse 3.0, and at the OS startup (where you would normally enter google account information for sync) It had told me the UI had stopped working. I did this twice to test.. The pull down status bar wouldnt work, no animations, and no 3g on the first run. I decided {MAYBE} and I say that with an extreme giggly voice, I had done something wrong. So, I followed the process again and of course, same problem. The third time I installed, when I got the UI stopped working error (before I made the first selection after install even) I decided to just Reboot the device. Thus rebooted and continued on without any error. My question is what did I miss on the install leading to this problem? I notice I don't have anykind of themed screen transition, is this because of the error? Any response and feed back if aprriciated, Thanks!

Thank you, for your response. Yes, I did try wiping ALL data.. Still have the same error. The phone is up and running, flawless (after a reboot of said error..) I'm just wondering if I missed anything and reporting back for future bug fixes. Is there no screen transition animation to this rom?
That rom.is cm10.1 4.2.2?

And the all have the same green leaf for a home screen, so are my ROMS not being written to the right place or what. this is getting confusing. the ROM form about shows the different versions but all are skipping the setup and I have no 3G/LTE connection, only wifi.
Whatever I am doing I seem to be consistent about it

the AOPK had gapps folded in. what is odd is I have now tried AOPK and a CM10 and CM10.1 and they all seem to have the same start screen, come up after the boot like it is already installed, missing any 3G/4G connection. Now I have flashed back to EG01 and run up though iCS several times and it isn't taking the CWM now, says it installs ok but boots into stock recovery. Now I using the older CWM 5504 for the i-905 and it writes somewhere, but apparently not where it should be. I was going to try TWRP but that doens't appear to run on HC/ICS - is it JB only? I have shied away from the newer CWM for a long time because for a while they just seemed to boot-loop the tablet.
Any one have a suggested working version of CWM? This starting from scratch and rolling in all the updates is getting old - which is why I was wondering if there is a way to build my own ODIN set to just flash back to this point without having to go though reroot and install of the recovery (which apparently now I am not able to do - wts! )
Thanks!
Rob (lost) in Katy.
Twrp is compatible with ICS too, if im not mistaken. Go to www.droidbasement.com and download pershoots's version of cwm recovery. That should work just fine. BTW, you did make a full wipe (system, data, cache, dalvik) right? And what's EG01?

I am now one cycle 15 and doing the last update to 4.04. every stinking rom I load goes back to the factory or the ROM starts off and ignores the setup. The really annoying thing is I have had all this setup and working before. Ahhhhhh!

Ok, i found another recovery laying around that seems to be working. I also found that the bug where you need to delete the script that deletes the new recovery. Once I got that far things started making sense. I guess whatever mod I was on before didn't need it. The next trick will be trynig to decifer how to do an odin backup so that I don't haver to roll though 4/5 upgrades to get here. I know someone is doing it. thanks for the help and a place to bounce ideas. will update if i come up with anything.

Anyone else experiencing freezes at boot logo.. I have twrp? stock rom?
Only way to fix is a battery pull .. this is phone number two as well. both did it?
Thank u,

Stuck
I'm also stuck on Verizon boot logo. I installed TWRP, did a backup, and installed Google wallet. After the reboot, it just stays on Verizon logo. I turned phone off, and help volume up, home, and power button. It just goes back to Verizon boot logo....Help!!!

How long are you waiting. On a deodexed rom it takes a couple minuted and looks frozen at the verizon screen on the first boot.
This is soo odd...and annoying... im perfectly fine until I install a deodexed rom.. I am able to boot up to it one time but after the next reset it freezes on
the custom unlock Verizon logo?
my phone? I have tried 2 deodexed roms
Curious to see if phone number three does the same thing.

I figured it out
When doing a wipe on internal storage with recovery causes it.
Weirdly enough you will be fine until your 2nd reboot.
any ideas what is going on?
Problem is with all roms including stock.

It's rebuilding the caches for all the apps. On AOSP this is explicitly shown as the "Android is upgrading" screen. On TW it does it during the Verizon boot animation loop. On the second boot the caches are already built.

You realize PaulB just said that it's freezing on the second reboot, which the caches are already built right?

Why are you wiping the internal storage? You only need to do a factory reset, which removes downloaded apps, reverts stock apps back to normal and removes all your personal data. I remember reading that performing an internal wipe removes the encryption on the internal memory. Maybe that's what is causing the issue.
I misread...I thought he said he was fine on the second boot.

Wiping the internal storage is not something I would normally do but did on occasion with the s3. There's no need for it really...
I am just happy its not the phone. it was difficult to diagnose because I would wipe factory and if I had a bunch of zip files I no longer needed on internal storage I would go on ahead and wipe that as well before installing a rom.
it would boot up fine and I could go a day or so before rebooting and it freezing so I didn't know what I was doing.
Just wanted to let everyone know ..
DONT WIPE YOUR INTERNAL STORAGE.
even a nandroid backup will fail after you encounter a freeze. The only way to fix it was to flash the stock odin.
Thanks for your input,
Paul
It seems that on the first boot I have about 9GB of free space. However, the second time the phone boots, I have about only 415MB free which means that it won't let me install certain apps or updates.
I'm currently using PAC rom, but I've also tried with Omni, Liquidsmooth, and had the same results. The issue is that when I install the rom everything looks ok on the first boot. However, when I restart the phone gets stuck at the Galaxy S4 boot screen for about 20 minutes. This has always been the case for me, but then the phone works normally after that. However, now it seems that no matter which rom I use I don't have much free space after the second boot.
Any ideas?! This is driving me nuts.

Yeah, it's MDK. I've used a few other roms in the past with no problems. I've done a full wipe in twrp, including formatting the data. I'm running out of ideas.

I'd just use Odin and start fresh. Not sure myself what else you could do. Since you've already formatted /data then why not try Odin.
