[Q] MHL support for PA 4.6 beta 5 - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I've read some old topics whereas it seems Paranoid Android doesn't support MHL.
Just wanted to make sure if the latest version (PA 4.6 beta 5) I have installed on my S3 i9300 does support it or not.
And if not, will MHL work if I go back to stock? (I've connected the mobile to the TV with an MHL adapter, but there was no signal).
Thanks!

For all of you who don't know, CUSTOM ROM'S CAN'T SUPPORT MHL AND WILL NEVER DO.
P.S. : sorry for caps but it has to be done. The reason for this restriction is Sam$ung for not making the MHL chip drivers open source. They have never done that and will never do it because they are Sam$ung.

Thanks for your reply.
I've made some further research and it seems that custom roms based on touchwiz do support MHL. Only AOSP ones do not.

Yes, ROM's like Blekota's or the ones like QS-i9300-KK do support MHL.

Custom ROM with MHL/HDMI support

From what I've read/understand MHL/HDMI out support only works on Samsung-based ROMs. So are there any custom ROMs based on stock Samsung which have MHL/HDMI but are not as slow/sluggish as stock? I really liked CM9 when I tried it but was extremely disappointed by the lack of MHL (I use my phone a lot to watch streams/videos/youtube). So I guess I'm asking if there's anything like CM9 but with proper MHL?
Check Chameleon.

But it's a tablet launcher, how will it help with MHL?

Oh right, sorry I'm clueless. This ROM looks really promising! Going to install and test now, thanks for replying so quickly!
No problem, I helped before on polish LG forums, but now I'm here

Use any Stock based custom ROM.
Please correct me if I'm wrong but isn't it the Kernel that controls the MHL/HDMI output?
So even with a stock ROM if you have custom Kernel it won't work?
No. MHL is controlled by ROM.
Sounds to me like you're trying to disguise a best ROM thread.
By the way, MHL works fine on CM9 for hardware accelerated video playback.

Yep, that's true.
Thank you for letting me know
The only reason I have remained on stock kernel was because I was told that custom kernels dont work with MHL.
Does this mean I can Flash Siyah Kernel on my stock LP7 ROM and still use MHL output?
Any help would be much appreciated!
P.S Sorry for going off topic a bit
Cheers guys
Wasn't trying to disguise anything, I just didn't know of any stock-based ROMs since I'm pretty new and don't know how to search for them or what to look for. For anyone who's also clueless: to install chameleon you need to root your phone and install the zip from an external SD card (as in a microSD) using cwm.

[Q] Miracast tweak on Cyanogenmod 10.1

I consider buying Netgear PTV3000, WiDi- and Miracast-enabled video stream box for TV. I know that stock S3 ROM supports it through AllShare. Hovewer, as I'm addicted to Cyanogenmod and flashing, I can't bear thought, that I'll have to reflash rooted stock or dual-boot stock and CM. Is there any tweak, that enables Miracast in Settings->Display? I've used something similar, when NFC in CM10.1 didn't work - it was recovery flashable zip. If it's lack of Samsung documentation and sources, maybe there is an app, working on Cyanogenmod 10.1, which mirrors phone screen in way supported by PTV3000?
I whould also like to know if miracast is possible on cyanogenmod?
Figuring it out soon
That makes 3 of us that are wanting to know. But I now have CM10.1 on my note 2 and I just ordered a PVT3000 so I guess I will figure this all out in the next week or so.

Make that 3 1/2
I cannot believe there is not more interrest in this....
on my Xperia Z, I can detect the Netgear PTV3000 and even try to connect to it but it will fair after a while (HDCP error).
at least there is hope that it can be fixed in future?
You can try under Settings => Display => Wireless Display
hope this helps!
this is one of the reasons I don't use cyanogen, that and the fact that it hasn't really changed the way it looks for several generations now, it really, really needs a visual refresh.
Has there been any recent update on screen mirroring?

[Q] MHL/HDMI Output on CM10.1 for Jewel?

Hello. I'm relatively new to the Cyanogenmod scene in general, so forgive me if I'm a bit ignorant. I looked through the official CM10.1 threads and didn't see much in the way of actually fixing MHL/HDMI not working. I think I read that the last snapshot that had MHL working was back in February or so, but I don't remember exactly.
I'm currently running cm-10.1-20130304-EXPERIMENTAL-jewel-M2 and have no MHL/HDMI at all. The phone doesn't seem to notice I've plugged in the adapter (except for it notices it's being charged, since the adapter is connected to an AC adapter).
Could someone inform me if there's been developments to fix this issue? Any insight is appreciated!
I had the same issue with my before car wrecked EVO LTE. I ran CM and many sense roms before basically giving up on it. Went through 2 cheap eBay adapters that worked for a bit then stopped altogether. Then the mhl/hdmi wouldn't work at all, not on any adapter or tv.
I asked a lot of other users if they had the same issue, even tried to pay a dev to look into it and was basically told it was a hardware issue.
My solution was to usb phone to Xbox for movies and use bluestacks on my pc for games/apps. Haven't yet tried my replacement EVO LTE. My original was a pre-order held up @ customs, so maybe it was faulty workmanship just bc it was new.
Hope u come up w a solution.

Are there any large differences between running CM10.1's stock kernel and Komodo Kernel? I am not entirely sure what exactly different kernels entail.
Yes with Komodo you can use swipe gestures to wake your phone or put it to sleep, also lover/increase the volume and advance power menu, etc, plus you can overclock and increase zram, etc etc etc... make a nand and flash komodo... good luck!

the s2 has wifi direct, but also in AOSP 4.4.2 kitkat roms?
Because I maybe want to buy the chromecast instead of a mhl cable. They have the same price, but with chromecast I can use the charger in my phone and with the mhl not always.
The chromecast works with wifi direct so yeah..

And why is AOSP not compatible.

I use my Chromecast and AOSP roms together all the time; Youtube doesn't care what ROM you use. «Cast Screen» inside the settings app under «display» is only realistically working on N5's.

Which latest and most optimized ROM can I use with Play Store and MHL working?

Hello guys, I'm new.
I have decided to reuse my old Note 1 as a video surveillance device to output to a monitor using TinyCam Pro.
I already flashed this with the latest Quincyatt and got it all working great, EXCEPT that MHL does not work on this build it seems.
From what I can gather from reading the forums so far, only ROMs based on STOCK have MHL working?
If this is the case, can anyone recommend me the leanest, most battery optimized ROM that has MHL working and which I can have Play Store enabled to download and get TinyCam Pro working?
Thanks a million.

If you are only using MHL then I would probably go back to a lite gingerbread (Saurom) or ice cream sandwich (Only One Goldie) rather then Jelly Bean (Custom Canadian or Blackstar Blackjelly). Also my mhl adapter has pass through charging which you will likely need anyway so battery life isn't a big deal.

Hey there, appreciate the information on which builds to try.
I'll try them out and see where it leads.
Wish they could figure out how to enable MHL on the Quincyatt build, that would have been perfect.
thanks,

Which rom specifically were you using? All builds for the i717 are quincyatt. It's the codename for the device.

Hey there, thanks for the tips and yes I clicked on the thanks button
I used the official Candy 5 rom located here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-att/development/rom-t3040558
Going to try the ones you are suggesting today or tomorrow.
thanks again!
Unfortunately after a bit of searching it looks like the Saurom mod is no longer supported and the official thread's download links do not work.
I also could not find a reference for Goldie except the Beta 5? version which looked dubious after I read toward the end that the developer tried to jack someone else's mod and claim it for himself.
Ah well, I guess I'll try some stock mods and see if that will do.
...
Hey just wanted to say I was successful making MHL and everything else work with CM9 mod stable, Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) - woot!
Everything is humming along well and now I got a low-power, video surveillance system haha!
Anyways, thanks again for all the help.

ok I spoke too soon.
Apparently this one doesn't seem to support the "fast charging" feature and I am running out of battery, albeit slow drainage, when using MHL and charging at the same time.
Need to look for a mod that has the fixed "fast charging" feature for usb.

Running a stock based rom you don't need any mod. Just an mhl adapter. Just be wary of roms that say they have removed all the Samsung bloat. Mhl apparently needs some of it.
