What does all this number mean NC2, NC5, NK1, NK2, NG6 . - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I have been searching but could not find any satisfactory answer. So, here it is:
What are all these baseband and build number mean? I know this is to identify the modem or the specific build but how do I know which is the right combination for my phone.
I noticed that my baseband is NK1 and build is NK2. Is this the right combination?
How can one tell which one is the newer and right for the VZW Galaxy S4?

They are the ending of your build.... go to "about phone" on your device and you will find the build and the last 3 characters will be what build you are currently on... every time verizon updates the phone and you install it, this build will change

How would one know which represents the newest or latest?

honestly, i have no idea... that has always been annoying to find but as they are releases you will find out if you search around in the threads for your phone... i know that i am on NC5 and the newer one was NG6 but it had problems so I didnt update... I just googled "verizon galaxy s4 build" and found that there is now a NK1 that came out after NG6... I do not know if there is anything since NK1

Isn't the baseband the radio version? I know the designations are often similar, if not identical, so it can be confusing. You can mix and match radios and firmware - all depends on your results with a particular combination. I have done so in the past and noticed small differences.

They go in order
NC2
NC5 (5 is greater than 2)
NG6 (G is greater than C)
NK1 (K is greater than G)

thanks for clearing it up.
It looks like my baseband is NK1 and build is NK2, so I have the latest.

I'm fairly certain NK2 is exclusive to Verizon S5. How did you end up with NK2?

I have installed Echoe ROM 39.1 and a patch had to be installed.
I guess that took it to NK2.
I also noticed model number is now GT-I9505.

I did some reasearch; looks like NK2 went out to T-Mo S4's. As far as model number is concerned, that could be adjusted in build.prop

[Q] Quick Jellybeans 18 addon question

Hey everyone,
Currently on Jellybeans - Build 18 ROM for my VZW Note 2. everything's working great so far, but was re-reading over the thread for it & noticed the addon section that has the VRAMC3 Modem. my current install seems to be working fine on both 3g & 4g (going on 1 week now with no crashes/downloads interrupted).
Do i need to flash this modem addon, or is this a "if it's not broke, don't fix it" situation?

The conventional wisdom is that you want the latest software to match the latest modem, but if everything is working fine there probably isn't a rush to do it (maybe flash VRAMC3 whenever build 19 comes out and you decide to update).

Not sure, but i think v18 is up to date on the modem (or at least when i look under phone details, baseband version is i605VRAMC3).
again, still new to flashing, so probably wrong but i <3 my Note 2.

If the baseband says VRAMC3 you are on the latest and don't need to do anything. You are set.

When you flash the rom the modem isnt touched. Im on beans18 with the original VRALJB modem. You must have already had the newer modem before you flashed. And the addage if it aint broke dont fix can apply here. If your modem plays good with your hardware and rom then let it be. I havent changed mine and probably wont, unless I get bored and want to try and extensively test which is better. That, however, could end up all in vain since ive read in other threads that it seems like peoples experiences are very subjective to their situation- area, nearby towers, hardware and on and on.

[Q] Upgrading my S4 still running 4.2.2 while keeping root

Hi everyone! I need some help updating my S4. I rooted it awhile back and I'm very much of the mindset of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it," so since it was doing everything I wanted, I've just left it alone and kept dismissing the prompt to install the OTA update. Now I'm having some issues and want some features of the newer versions of Android, so I was looking around for the best way to update it while keeping my root access. All the guides I can find, however, talk about upgrading from 4.3 to 4.4 or 4.2 to 4.3. So I was wondering...
1. What version should I update to? On my last phone, a Droid Bionic, one of the big Android version updates ran so horribly on it that I ended up getting a new phone. Because of that, I'm very nervous about updating my phone and having the performance suffer.
2. There must be a way to go straight from 4.2.2 to whatever version I choose, right? Do I need to go dig up some old guides on how to update my phone so that the most recent guides are relevant?
I hope I'm not being a super noob about this. I tried Googling around, and I'm pretty tech savvy but just haven't had the time to keep up with recent developments, so some guidance would be very helpful!
About my phone:
Verizon Galaxy S4
Model #: SCH-I545
Android version: 4.2.2
Baseband version: I545VRUDMI1
Thanks so much!
Find out what base band you have, MDK, ME7?
If MDK, install recovery download rom.
Anything other check this thread out:

Advice, better read about the bugs and issues each version has. Once you go up, you cannot go back. Not ever, no never.

Well if he is one of those few lucky MDK people he could hop around versions as he please. But most of them already know that *Grin*

I put the baseband version of my phone in my original post. It's I545VRUDMI1. Or am I missing something? So that means I should use Odin to flash whatever rom I decide to go with, right? So if I went with something like this 4.4.4 Google Play Edition I can use Odin to put it on my device? But then if I decide I don't like that rom for whatever reason, I can't redo it with any roms based on an earlier version (4.4.2, 4.3, etc), but other 4.4.4 roms would work?
Thanks so much for the help!

You need a custom recovery to flash that Play Edition ROM which is not possible with your MI1 baseband.

Here's a pretty good thread explaining the different basebands.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2578569
OK, I think I'm starting to get it. So should I use Odin to flash the rom listed under "Recover by re-flashing stock" in this thread? Or should I use safestrap? What's the difference?

[Q] OTA VRUFNC5 when I already have VRUFNC5?

A couple weeks ago, my Verizon Galaxy S4 let me know that there was an update available. As I always do, I wanted to check out the docs first. Interestingly, this is for the version that the phone is already running. Has anyone else seen this before? Since I have root already, I'm not thinking that I need to install the same, non-root version. What gives here?
I believe this update is for NG6. It has minor fixes from nc5. In my opinion, I would stick with nc5. Just flash ng6 modem if you want a better connectivity.

So the info contained in docs is incorrect, and should indicate NG6 instead? Brilliant. If that's the case, I'll just keep ignoring the upgrade.

which modem do I have?

I'm looking to root my new g3 I picked up. I see everyone saying "go to baseband it will tell you" But I don't see anything that clearly says "24B" or "23C". I ran into this issue when I did my G2 also, but did it blindly..(and came out ok with 24B) lol Now I figured as I was on LP that it would be 24B, so I tried the all-in-one 24B root, it failed with access denied..and now the software status does say modified. So really I'm just wondering if there is some super secret place to decode the baseband to see what the modem is. Thank in advance for your response.
Edit for info:
android version 5.0.1
baseband 00053-m8974a
So answering my own questions, I found I am on 23C. But I'm still wondering about how to tell the modem version. Is 23C 5.0.1, and 24B is 5.1.1?

Modems aren't really referred to by Android version. Sometimes the same modem will work on several Android versions although in my experience the official modem that comes with each new build is different/modified from the modem from the previous build. Generally, we refer to the modems as the same build number of the stock ROM it came with. The modem from 24B we call the 24B modem, etc.

Are there any kernels for the S4 that work?

I'm on the stock S4 5.0.1 kernel, rooted. Are there any alternate kernels that are Odin compatible and won't mess up the phone?
non-MDK bootloader: NO.
MDK bootloader : yes
Depends on what your looking for. If you are on OF1 there are several that are quite effective at bricking your phone. Probably not the desired outcome though
However, rumor has it that these unsigned Kernel Modules have been successfully flashed on devices with the OF1 bootloader. I am in the process of installing them myself.

Be sure to thank the Dev....donate if feasible.

It went perfect. Flashfire install. I just used the latest version from play store. Kernel Adiutor works well with it (even though the new look takes some getting used to). I'm running Stang5litre v3 with the OF1 bootloader so I used OF1. Check out ATGKompressors battery saving guide after you get it installed. I noticed improvements right away.

Good news, everyone. I got a used motherboard that is carrier unlocked and was on 4.4.2, so I can flash whatever I want now. Still looking for ROMS though. I'm on Dirty Unicorns 4.4.4 right now, but am looking for a kernel. The CPU freq settings don't stick for CPU1, 2, and 3, only for CPU0. Tried AlucardKernel, it sucked and didn't work properly. Are there any kernels that allow overclock?
