Installing roms made for other devices? - Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooti

On the CM boards, someone told me they flashed a Z3 (leo) rom on their Z3TC. I was wondering, has anyone ever tried that? And if so, what phone/tablets would work?
Supposedly, this person used a Z3 rom, so I'm trying to hunt down CM11 roms. Do you think he flashed the stock Z3 ftf via Flashtool before flashing the room? I would ask him, but he hasn't responded.
I've rooted, unlocked the bootloader and back up the stock rom.

I'm dubious about this but interested considering the lack of development on the Z3TC, keep us updated please!

No one has any experience with this?

I have to admit that the lack of development on this tablet is frustrating. Such a waste of potential

Bump

Has anybody tried this? If you take a look at the specs, the z3 tablet has the chipset MSM8974AC v3, wich is the same than the Z3 and Z3c

Wondering if this is possible?
I have a C6806 through Bell. It however uses the Sony Branded ROM. Would this update work or are their hardware differences which would cause a brick?

Oh please read some threads in this great forum it got asked soo many times. To your question: No as of now this is not possible. And most likely making your device a regular GPe will not be possible too. A modified version of the rom will be available soonish

I purchased a c6806 from Bell about 3 weeks ago and would prefer to be on the GPe firmware, if possible. Under the Android development forum for the Xperia ZU, bigxie has posted a port of DooMLoRD's 4.4 ROM. With my unlockable bootloader, is it even possible for me to attempt to flash this rom? And if I do, will it mostly likely brick my device?

It does say unlocked in the OP of the thread, and needs either the stock GPE kernel or the modified GPE kernel. I dont believe that either will boot on a locked ZU

You're on Bell which means that Bell have locked the bootloader themselves. You can't unlock your bootloader, so you can't flash custom ROMs (including GPe). This might change in the future though (if some dev manages to crack it), but don't count on it.

[Q] Newbie asking for some guidance

Hi all, I am about to become the proud owner of a SXZ Ultra, and I was hoping someone might be kind enough to provide me with some links to the the most important info to help learn my way around this device. I have experience with Android but have no idea what to expect from the Sony UI nor the rooting procedure etc., so I would be grateful for some pointers to help minimize the learning curve and get the most out of the device as soon as possible. A quick search on the subject of rooting left me somewhat bemused...I am used to the SGA (Samsung Galaxy Ace), which was a totally different type of device with an entirely different procedure for flashing ROMs and rooting.
I have a specific question aside from that - I see that there is an IM750 MHL to HDMI adaptor available from Sony, but I would like to know if this is really necessary - has anyone had success with Miracast or Wifi Direct/DLNA connection with a smart TV so as to be able to send what I want to watch on the TV from the SXZU? I would prefer this to having to connect via HDMI because I have found that mini/micro HDMI connectors on tablets seem to be rather fragile to say the least, and it would also make far more sense for presentations. Thanks for your help.
MHL works well. Some people seem to have no issues with mirrorcast etc but others do...
For rooting read LordManhattan's guide and my downgrade guide both at the top of the general section.
The steps are more or less;
downgrade
Root
Backup TA
Unlock bootloader
Flash rom...
For stock sony firmware you can get the updates via PC companion [PCC] or use flashtool and flash FTF's

Thank you. The thing is that if possible I would like to avoid having to unlock the bootloader, but I need Root in order to use Titanium Backup and be able to flash an alternative recovery so I can use Online recovery tools. Forgive my ignorance, but is this possible? Ideally I would like to upgrade to KitKat then obtain Root and flash the TWRP/CWM twin recovery without unlocking the bootloader - it seems to me that there are several advantages to using the stock ROMs, particularly being able to recieve Sony upgrades, at least until they stop supporting the device.

Yes you can get away with not unlocking the BL, if you go that route you don't need to back up the TA either. You will still need to downgrade yo route though. There are several ROMs based on sony firmware, and to be honest will probably be better that pure stock. Some of the upgrades have worked on rooted phones others haven't

Thank you. Are any of those custom ROMs available with the latest Kit Kat release? I see that the SXZU is listed by Sony to receive this update, which is primarily why I didn't want to flash a custom ROM right away = and I would like to try Sony's stock configuration first. I have tried CM10, PAC ROM and others in my SGA and frankly I was underwhelmed for the most part, although with such a totally different device I might be pleasantly surprised...
Which ROM would you personally ally recommend?

Yes Sony has a 4.4.2 firmware out for the whole range. There is a rooted rom based on this that is very close to pure stock Sony I believe, and then there is Monix's ROM based on Sony's 4.4.2 release that gets good reviews - it is quite customised.
On the custom ROM front there are:
SlimKat - this is my preferred ROM but I'm having trouble building it for this device consistently
Carbon - this is my daily at the moment, I'm doing the unofficial builds of this for now
LiquidSmooth - this seems to get good reviews but doesn't look like it's been updated in about a month
PAC - I was using this for some time and was good
PA - as above
CM11 - Has it's fans and most of the other ROMs use at least some parts of it and it's device tree
AOSP - Don't know what that is up to, not used it
AOKP - as above
PAC - I was using this for some time and was good
PA - as above
Then there is the GPe port that many seen to love

[Q] Are there ANY roms out there for z2a/canopus/D6563?

Hi,
I've been looking through roms listed at [INDEX]ROMs/Kernels/Tweaks[UPDATED-21/02/2015], but I can't seem to find any that support the z2a/canopus/D6563. Ideally there would be one with lollipop and some of the handy sony tools from stock, but I can't find any rom at all for the z2a.
Should I be looking in a different place?
Thanks!
i dont think so since D6563 is so inpopular
though you can run Z2 roms on a Z2 i doubt it will fully work

Z3v Marshmallow AOSP

Recently I got an email from Sony about AOSP Marshmallow being available on the Xperia line. I was wondering if it's possible to build and flash my Z3v with Sony's AOSP. In theory as long as I have an unlocked bootloader it should work, right?
Thanks,
Phillip

Terrible theory, your bootloader is far from unlocked. You will destroy your device attempting that. Since none of that exists for our device yet you will have to wait. And to tell you the honest truth this device is over a year old, hardly anyone competent in Android even owns it. I would be genuinely surprised if we ever see marshmallow, let alone an unlocked bootloader. Everyone should know the difference and understand these terms inside and out before flashing anything if you expect to have a successful experience.

Best ROMs for Xperia Z

Hi guys,
I am not completely fresh here. I have done simple modding in the past (at least 4 years ago). However, I am not updated and neither properly "trained" as to what concerns newer ROMs and procedures to follow to unlock the bootloader and so on.
I would like to revitalize my Xperia Z (6603), nothing too fancy, just wishing to making it faster and possibly more energy efficient (it is now running the official ROM, namely android 5.1.1. version)
What do you suggest me? Would be so kind to copy paste the link to the right thread that explain how to do it?
Many thanks
