Trying the root the S4 that I just got from VZ. It is version number I can't find i think because it has 5.0.1 on it. Anyone else ran into the build number of VRUGOC1. If you have rooted with this version please let me know what method you used, I don't want to cook the thing.
Thanks

I have a rooted Nook tablet so not a complete noob, but how safe is the root process for a verizon Galaxy s4? I'd like to root it so I can get rid of some of the junk apps and install others I want, but I void my two yr warranty...thoughts from the experts? just want to feel comfortable moving forward and if so, is there a set of clear instructions somewhere?
Thanks to all

Instead of an asinine comment that does you no go, here's some info.
Yes, rooting will void the warranty. However, you can always Odin to go back to stock should you have an issue that requires returning your phone to VZW.
I've rooted both my old S3 and my current S4. I JUST started rooting on the S3, so I'm relatively new as well but have learned a lot. My S3 was stock rooted, but I took the plunge with my S4 and am running HyperDrive ROM which is HOLY MOLY sweetness.
It's up to you, but if you're going to root, perhaps look at the ROMs that are available and flash one. I'm not sorry that I started flashing Roms. Not one bit

Three replies thus far and yours is the only one of solid benefit..thanks. Can you point me anywhere to see step by step to accomplish what you did on your S4?

Here is the link to root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2290798
How old is your S4? The reason that I ask is that there was an OTA update the broke root. Currently there are Dev's looking into how to root with the new firmware.
Have you installed the OTA update?
Phone is about a month old...I have made no changes to the existing phone so I don.t know about the OTA update (although the VW software that came with it appears to update the phones software when plugged into laptop)

Go to ->Setting->More->About Phone and tell me what you Baseband version says. If it's VRUAME7, you have the OTA update. If it's VRUAMDK, you do not.
confirming VRUAME7

Unfortunately you will not be able to root until a new method becomes available.
is it possible to back up to pre-OTA update status?

No.....there is no way to uninstall the update. Patience, young rooting grasshopper! A new method will be out shortly, I would imagine. Doesn't usually take too long,
Much appreciated...and lastly can you point me to how I would reinstall what you refer to as Odin should I screw up a future root process?

Just looking to root the most current OTA, my search so far makes me believe its not possible. Is this true or am I missing something?
Thnak you!
I'm wondering the same thing. I recently had to get a replacement phone and unfortunately it's running stock 4.4.2. First time I've ever had a phone with a bootloader that couldn't be unlocked. I would like to at least have my phone rooted. Anyone out there willing to share a root solution with us?

Yeah it really sucks. I need root to fully make use of my chromecast. A bunch of devices received screen mirroring but not the note 2. Such a sinple thing but so difficult to root. Hope we can get root soon. Thank you to anyone who is still working on this.

There are many, many variants of the Galaxy S 5. Go into Settings - More - About device and tell us your model number.

OK, Verizon version.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2784860
You can root now and cancel the update, or let the update happen and follow the instructions in the NE9 update guide. The only thing that's missing in the guide is a link to Odin itself, so here it is for you. Odin is a utility for flashing Samsung firmware. Just make sure you follow the instructions given exactly.

Yes. You can update and re-root too, as long as you do the kernel flashing stuff with Odin described in that tutorial.

Let me get this straight.
Use Towel Root
Don't update to new firmware
Use Odin to flash kernel and use Custom Roms on Verizon Samsung Galaxy S5?

Sorry, I'm really not the person to ask. This was 2 months ago, and I don't remember anything about what I read. Anything I could tell you would be information you can find out on your own.

Biggest thing I want to know is if it's still possible. If I'm reading another thread correctly, by rolling back to a previous version of code, you can.

That's my understanding. I'll probably be doing the same thing with my Note 3 in a couple days, once it arrives in the mail. But yours is a different device from a different carrier, with a locked bootloader, while mine will be unlocked.
I came across this today and I am wondering since it is nc5 would it work to root our phones? I am not saying to try it so dont message me if you brick your phones!

Ok, I understand that we already have root, but I have used auto root many times with other phones. I am always able to install TWRP directly after on any phone I use. I guess maybe its because the bootloaders are already unlocked?

Our bootloader is locked so auto root and mobile odin and other similar programs won't work with the Verizon s4. Those that are lucky to still be on the mdk bootloader are the only ones that can install twrp or cwm
I have been searching around for quite a wile, but I havn't been able to find an answer. Perhaps someone from the community could help me.
My Galaxy S4 took the OTA update to VRUGOC1. It was not previously rooted, and I know there is no current way to root this version.
My question is this: Is there any active root development going on for this OTA update, or am I just stuck?

I am also stuck in the same boat with my wife's phone... Wishing she let me root this a year ago... Anyone have thoughts on this?
There is a new version of towelroot in the general section, is not confirmed, but it's there if someone wants to be the first.

I tried v3, with no luck. Is there a never version? Do you happen to have a link to it if there is?

Does not work.
I just want to bump this thread to see if any new information is available
use desktop kingroot. it can root OC1, but remember that you cannot downgrade to any prior to OC1. if you're going to upgrade to OF1, use this guide by muniz
Desktop kingoot works, download latest version from their website;
http://www.kingroot.net/down
Can anyone confirm this actually worked?
I can confirm that Kingroot never worked to root my phone. A ton of ppl here have said it worked on theirs. I've tried just about every way known to get Kingroot to work but it doesn't like my phone. I have tried to download it again and now Google says the site is full of malware and it really does not want me to download from that site.
