You need to enable it, on language & input then google voice settings I believe I had the same problem.
So that fixed it but now I have a new question it seems that I can unlock the phone with my voice but when I said it it still doesn't unlock it just goes to okay Google but stays locked...

I thought with the 2.1 update we would get the little speaker icon to do speech to text in text messages and emails. But I don't see it

I have it. On my keyboard though, not on the application itself. I had to use it in the browser since the 2.1 cleanup/jit installer removed all of my keyboards.

Yes in the generic 2.1 there is a microphone icon on the Android keyboard, but it appears SE did not give us that keyboard. SE knows what's best & so I am completely OK with whatever they decide, after all they have to hold back exciting 'new' features like MT, 16m colours & the microphone icon for their new phone. ;-).
Try Vlingo....great in car text reader and dictation. Also works for search and email. Installs a Vlingo keyboard that is essentially the stock Android board withe the voice input key. I found it last week and just love the app.
I just installed vlingo. It's okay but when I say send a text message it handles the dictation but never adds the recipient.

Really? I say send text to "add name" and read message in one pass and it works flawlessly. Same for a reply to a message received. Only flaw I have is the spotty connection to the Vlingo servers while driving at times......other than that great app.
Can anyone tell me how to cut off the voice notification that happens everytime I get a text? I've looked in settings but haven't seen anything that would change it.

Its part of the "voice talk" app. You must have it set to drive mode so it announces everything that happens on your phone. You can turn it off through the widget, or through the app itself.

Yup. That fixed it. Thanks!
Is there a way smart dialing can use log first before looking into the contacts book ? I dial someone & shortly after if I want to call him again, keypad searches all over like it did the first time

You need to disable call screening. As far as I can tell there isn't a way to disable screening on call waiting though.

Log in to Google Voice on the website, not the app, and go to settings.
under the "calls" tab, there's a "Call Screening" section. Click the setting from on to off.
as far as I know, there is no other way to change this -- it cannot be done from within the voice app (afaik).
make sure you save your settings.
Thanks

I'm not sure what i did because it was over a year ago, but I was able to use voice to text from clicking the speaker button in my keyboard. On any app anytime without Wi-Fi and with data off. Does anyone know where I got that ability? Gtalk enabler? Offline vtt? Idk I'm sure it was a zip or apk but I can't remember what. Google search had no results. I was using task650 4.1.2 unicorn JB rom

Look under the Language & Input settings in System settings: you have to enable Google Voice typing, then it will work.
Lol. I just noticed it was preinstalled just didn't know how to activate it. Thanks
