Any "root cloaking" that doesn't require xposed? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

After HBO updated their Now app to have Chromecast support, I took the plunge and signed up... only to find out that the app does not work on rooted devices. Are there any ways to hide root status that don't involve using xposed? I'm guessing not, but I figured I might as well ask. I was hoping that there'd be a general "cast" button in the app, and that I could just shoot video to my Nexus Player that way, subverting the attempt to play the video on my phone/ tablet (and thus, not being blocked due to being rooted), but I see no casting button anywhere in the app, so I assume it can only be done once the video has started playback. Which I can't do, because of being rooted... @[email protected]

Use RootCloak Plus which doesn't use Xposed. It uses Cydia Substrate instead.

Offline video playback (amazon,etc)

I've tried searching for this, but haven't found anything that addresses it yet...
Does anyone have a way to make amazon rented videos play offline on a g tab with a different ROM on it? I was hoping to rent a couple from amazon and watch on a plane this weekend, and it looks like the online streaming works alright, but when I try to pull them down to watch offline, I get a message that I can't do that, because they can tell the tablet is rooted?
Alternatively, where do you all get your movies from, preferably legally I'm not tied to amazon if there's a different source that works on our tablets...just haven't really looked much of anywhere else.
FWIW, I'm running VeganTab 7.1 (I think...the boot screen says 7.0.0, but the system dialog looks like its 7.1)
Amazon uses Microsoft's DRM for downloaded content there is no way to watch these on an Android device. Currently they are limited to Windows and Xbox. I really don't know a whole lot about the browser flash player, there was a hack for xbmc that allowed you to stream, but it does not help you for offline anyway.
All companies have there own DRM so the best bet would be to look at The Youtube rental service as it's by Google Though I've never used it.

Thanks, I suspected that might be the case. I hadn't looked at the youtube service, so I'll check it out.

Aaaannndddd....I'm really dumb. The movies I was trying to watch ARE from the youtube service, since I pulled them from the marketplace. So it looks like they should work on an android device, but don't like the root ROM.
I just usually rent from Amazon on my laptop, so defaulted to think that that's what I was looking at.
You can try Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper, or Temp Root Remover. Those temporarily "remove" root so you can run some apps that look for root. That might work.

Beaming to the Q - A Simpler Way to Launch Apps

So you've got a Q, and you've learned how to adb install apps to it... maybe even put a launcher on. But if you've got an NFC capable phone/tablet, you need not mess around with a launcher: your device will be your launcher.
As most of you probably know, the Q ships with a fully capable NFC radio. But for whatever reason, google only ever gave it one official function... beaming out a link the the Q App in the Play Store. Even if you already have it installed. They could have just as easily used a tag to do that job. But I've discovered that if you're running a sideloaded app, the Q will beam that app to your phone. Clearly, we're dealing with a fully beam-compatible device.
However, the Q is programmed to automatically push it's beam out when it finds a device that can receive it. To overcome this, you must open settings (either via a launcher or via adb shell, this is well-documented) and go to the "more" menu. Turn Android Beam OFF while leaving NFC on. This allows the Q to still read your incoming beams (they act just like tags, for compatibility) but it stop apps from opening unexpectedly on your phone.
Once you've done that, you can open any app installed on your Q simply by opening it on your phone/tablet and beaming it over. You'll still need a mouse or keyboard to navigate, but you won't have to futz around with getting to the launcher. This is working on my unrooted Q.
(I don't think this has been discussed before. I hope someone finds it useful!)
Thanks for the info, I was actually wondering whether this was available on the stock firmware. When you say you still need to launch/control with OTG, do things like Youtube links not autoplay when Beamed?

This basically opens the app like an android app on the Q. To click on things you need a mouse and an otg cable.

Animal24 has it right. And yes, it's available stock and unrooted. If you send a video to the Q, it will still work. However, when the video stops, it will return to the open app, not the standard home screen. If I recall correctly, music will play in the background if an app is open, and the lights will not dance.
That all said, I haven't used the Q since the new music lauched. :/

With CM10.1 and XBMC, I'm planning on using the Q to replace my Revue. I'm all OTA so I don't have a cablebox for the Revue to interface with, and with Aptoide I'm going to see if I can get the new Primetime working on the Q for finding and watching shows from Netflix/etc. Hopefully some year Primetime will do generic Amazon links instead of the GoogleTV apps. I'm using the new Play Music on my Q and using my phone as a remote. I've discovered that I can't seem to beam from the new Play Music to another device, or at least when I do it won't autoplay.

How are you doing this? ATM, I'm using BubbleUpNp from both sides, Q and phone. This allows me to still use Google Music as well as All Access. If there is a way to get the stock aplication to work in any way, please share

Hi FadedLite,
I'm using DroidMote to use my phone as a remote to the Nexus Q. I also use ShareKM, another fantastic option that lets me mouse "over" to my Nexus Q from my laptop and control the cursor with my laptop's mouse. One thing I need to figure out is a way to trigger DroidMote Server and ShareKM to start listening on boot, otherwise I have to use my OTG plugged mouse to open the programs and start them up once.
To use Google Music with All Access on the Q, as I stated I'm running CM 10.1 and they have a Gapps package that gives you the Play Store and Play Framework, so you can install Google Play Music and Movies & TV, etc.

[Q] Pre-buy doubts (Hdx 8.9)

Hello, I hope this is the right place for these questions. I've been surprised when I first saw this tablet. The only thing that isn't convincing me is the Amazon OS. Today it looks like a root exploit has been found ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2542456 ) Now my questions are:
Is it possible to install the Google play store?
With Silk can I normally download files from browser and read them? (like pdfs or winrar archives)
Can I transfer files from the computer with the usb cable and read them from the kindle, like films or apks? (maybe a stupid question because it is android based OS, but it's the first time I'm buying an amazon tablet so better ask before..) Thanks guys
I'm having the exact same thoughts as well. About to make a tablet buying decision between the Sony Z and this. The Amazon software is the only reason I would not go with it instead

Let's see what people, who already bought it, thinks about it
WIth root, installing the Play store is possible and will work fine if you have all the right framework files installed. This has been confirmed in the general and android development sections.
Silk will allow you to download files just fine.
You can access the Kindle just like any other Android device when plugged in via USB. That is to say, it's drag and drop file management. I have sideloaded MX Player for video playback. It's my favorite player and I've successfully watched MKV, avi, mpg, m4v files with audio encoded in DTS and Dolby 5.1. DTS decoding requires a custom codec that's available on XDA.
PDF's work just fine. I'm using EZPDF and Moon Reader+, but you can take your pick. I don't think they can be view from inside the browser if that's what you're asking. I have Chrome sideloaded and use it as my primary browser.
The Kindle has a setting to allow third party apps to be installed just like any other Android device so APK's can be installed easily.
All in all, the HDX is almost perfect. If root access will fix the customization issues (wallpapers and widgets) along with Play Store access this will be the best device on the market.
It has the best combination of screen size, screen resolution, thickness, weight, battery life, and power. Snapdragon 800 is as good as it gets for now and really make this device fly. The resolution and color production is as good as it gets confirmed by Displaymate testing and from personal experience.
If Amazon had allowed Play Store access out of the box, it would the unquestioned best tablet on the market. Thanks to XDA, we will have it shortly.
EDIT: I have the HDX 8.9

Do you know if it supports OTG? I would enjoy connecting a flash drive with a microusb-usb adapter..
Well, I just took the plunge and bought a 32gb HDX 8.9
I have zero desire to use any of Amazon's services, but the hardware on this is so perfect for what I am looking for.
I do hope that the discovered root method will lead to recovery, and custom roms, but I am not expecting that to happen either.
After looking at what can be done with apps and everything, I can probably get by on stock. If not, there is always the 30 day return window!

Personally I don't have a desire for custom roms on this device. It is stable with great battery life. Root gets me enough of the features and customization I want. Plus I get to keep the Amazon services which would most likely break with custom roms. But I'll be excited to see if Cyanogen or Paranoid Android supports this device.

As far as I know, In Canada we are limited by what Amazon can offer to us. We certainly don't get the full experience.
What specific features does root allow?

HBO Go, Showtime Anytime and WatchESPN FireTV apps on Android TV

Hello all,
So with some trial and error, I was able to get my hands on the apks for the Fire TV Versions of HBO Go, Showtime Anytime and WatchESPN. These are all apps we desperately need on our Android Tvs.
The biggest problem right now is that when you sideload these onto your device, they bring up one of three errors.
If you don't have the Amazon Appstore or Amazon Underground installed at all, it will prompt you to install it, then force quit itself.
If you have the Amazon Appstore or Amazon Underground installed, but you are not logged in, the error will prompt you to login and will take you straight to the login page.
If you have the Amazon Appstore or the Amazon Underground, and you are logged in, the error will claim that you do not own the app in question and either show you details or force-quit you.
Now, it seems to me (a humble peasant compared to many people here) that we're approaching this all wrong. So far, it seems like we've been trying to hoodwink the apps into thinking we're running them on Fire TV devices by modifying our build.prop. I have yet to hear this work. Instead I would propose this: what if we stopped the error message from closing our apps after the prompt? So say, in the first scenario, it prompts me to install the Amazon Appstore, I click ok... and nothing happens, leaving me free to use the app normally.
This Youtuber was able to get the HBO Now (not Go) app for Fire TV working somehow using this method
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O2h59156pHE
If a brave soul of the XDA community wants to try this and gift us with modified APKs that will run on our systems, that would be fantastic. I can attach the APKs if you need them
UPDATE
I was able to get this to work! DM me for details (if Amazon finds out how, they will shut down this loophole). I was able to get most apps for Fire TV I could get my hands on to work! The only one that consistently gave me issues was the WatchABC app, everything else works 100% (HBO Go is a little sluggish, but Showtime Anytime is buttery smooth )
I would love to get the watchespn apk!

It's already available in one of the threads, I've had it working for the most part. I think if you had a keyboard and mouse it would be even better.
Android TV needs a WatchESPN app. I'm not going to use a mouse to control my TV. I know it works but it's annoying. I'll just cast until they hopefully release one. The Fire TV WatchESPN app is fantastic.

Hi mate, there's an app on FireTV called TVPlayer for UK Freeview channels, it has a really nice UI on FireTV completely different to the regular Android app, wondering if you'd manage to grab that one?

Would it be possible to get an APK for Playstation Vue? Id like to see if I can get it running on my Nexus.
Playstation Vue would be great, if its possible. Its a great service, just wish it was on the nexus player.
Yeah Playstation Vue... Yes, please!
I don't know if you guys noticed - but watchESPN is now a native androidTV app. Easy install from within nexus player's play store. Seems to work great, live streaming works as well. Finally, I was able to get rid of the sideloaded apk.

Do you know if the HBO Go app works with comcast, Comcast hasn't approved the use of androidTV devices for streaming but they have for FireOS and regular Android, currently I use the regular Android app, but proper TV UI and remote navigation would be good.
UPDATE:
It does indeed appear to be a separate app that activates has a fire tv device so can be activated with comcast, but its pretty laggy, does anyone have the most up to date fire tv version, I'm running 2.7.06
Looks like I spoke too soon, seems like I can't get anything to actually play, just force closes.

Is there any way to see Prime Video on mx9 pro?

Welcome to the whole forum, I'm new here and I hope to find a way to solve a problem I have with my android tv box MX9 pro. The first thing I did to whatch Prime Video was to install it from the play store. The application works, allows me to log in and gives me all the movies, tv series available. But when I want to watch a video content, whatever it is, the movie starts for about a second then closes (crashes) and returns to the home page of the chosen content.
Then i tried to install the version for Android TV, obviously not through the play store, and even in this case I log in regularly. When I want to see a video content, the video does not start but constantly remaining the buffering circle.
Finally I tried to see if I could bypass the application by going through KODI and I installed the Sandmann79 add-on for prime video and, although with a different procedure, I regularly access my Prime account. When I want to start watching a video content, after setting the standard kodi player, this seems to start regularly, the time bar advances but the screen remains blank and nothing is heard.
At this point I have exhausted all the options available to me and I am forced to ask for help in this forum.
Is it really impossible to play the videos of the first videos with this device?

Thank you, i had already Read that post and i tried the last apk 4.10.3 of [email protected] but using that apk, i got an error of internet connection when i tried to watch a video. What i am trying now is to set VLC as external default player in kodi to make sure that all the videos launched by kodi are opened with vlc that always reads everything. There is an xml file to be integrated into a specific folder of kodi but then, when I want to open the video, it gives me a message that there is an external player but I do not open it then, yet, I can not say if this additional method it works or not.
Anyway the procedure suggested in the post you conseiled me doesn't work, at least for me.
Thanks Anyway.
Rockchip, the chipset company already fixed the problem of Amazon Prime Video not working over a year ago on similar devices.
The manufacturer of your tv box must have really outdated firmware and zero support since they didn't fix it.
But Amazon also blocks the tablet app from working on devices with traces of AndroidTV as in your case and the AndroidTV app only works on full AndroidTV devices having Playready 3 DRM, which your device doesn't have, thus the error with the AndroidTV app.
You can use the Kodi addon, it works correctly, check if your are using the latest version and login from the addon's settings and wait, also make sure the InputStream addon is enabled and changed to InputStream and not Kodi or something else.
Thank you. I don't think My Android Device is out dated because received Android 8. Anyway if the problem is with drm 3 no way. Not even with kodi works, i tried all i could try. I installed addon prime video of sandmann79 and enabled inputstream but i only get The movie starting with no image neither sound, only White screen and time bar going on. Therefore i wanted to try an external player as vlc.....
I think i can't go on anymore, the Device doesn't send anymore video Signal to my tv so i can't anymore display it on the tv..... Definitively broken.
At the end of all i got a conclusión that only a tv box is worthy of bringing this name, ie nvidia shield tv, albeit with all its flaws. I had one and despite very few apps were on the play store (Chrome on all), did not have an on / off button, did not display all the shortcuts in the app section, had absolutely no such problems. I gave it back because I did not like these things but I did not think that these Chinese boxes were such a crap. I tried h96 max +, mx9 pro and both of them stopped after two days of work. I think to back to buy a shield tv, the only box worked fine with prime video, Netflix, without lags thanks to his powerful hardware.
