Hello everyone!
I just bought a second hand SII (i9100) and I wanted to install CM on it (it is on stock 4.1 right now). The phone is in great shape, everything works perfectly, it's smooth, doesn't have even 1 scratch on it. I've tried the CM installer, but I'm getting the "we couldn't talk to your phone" error. In order to fix it or install CM manually, I have to enter download mode. This is the problem: I can't get into download mode through the button combination and the adb method doesn't work either. It reboots the phone, but it boots normally into the OS afterwards. Recovery mode works, but download doesn't.
Any advice?

Are you using the right combo keys?(Vol down, home, power) Are your volume keys working properly? That is strange if you can't get into download mode. When you hold the three buttons from power off, make sure you release the keys as soon as the samsung logo appears.
Alternatively you can install CM from recovery and enable advanced reboot options from there to make life a little easier.
I'll give you some steps to try if you are still stuck.

Thank you for the reply! Yes, I am sure I'm using the right key combo, tried it countless times. And yes, my volume keys work properly. I needed to enter download mode to try the fix for the "we couldn't talk to your device" error that the CM installer gives. Fortunately, it worked when I tried on another PC and I have CM 11 succesfully installed on the device now. I still want to give CM 12.1 a try tho, so I need to install CWM and I need download mode for that... I guess there's no way I can update to a CM 12.1 nightly OTA, right?

You don't really need download mode to install CM12.1, although you do need it if you run into any problems requiring for example to go back to stock rom or if you can't get into recovery. Try powering off and using the key combo for download mode now you have CM11.
But to install CM12.1, you just need to download the .zip(and gapps if you want), boot into recovery mode(CM11 installed a new recovery, either CWM or TWRP), then do your backups and full wipe from recovery and install the .zip(s) from there. You don't necessarily need the CM installer to do this, or to go back to CM11 if you want/need later either

Download mode still doesn't work unfortunately, it's really weird considering recovery mode works just fine. And yea, it installed CWM 6.0.5.0 I think, I didn't realise it also installed a new recovery automatically, my bad there. Thank you for trying to help me anyways, I'll give CM12.1 a try tomorrow and give the guys some feedback on that thread. All I can do is hope I won't need download mode in the future or that it magically fixes itself.

Maybe do a bit of reading about using ADB and get a usb jig. You might really need download mode one day.

Already tried ADB and it didn't help, the phone rebooted normally, so I guess an USB jig is my best bet. I'll get one as soon as possible, better be safe than sorry.
Well, my luck got from bad to worse. I've tried to install CM12.1 today and now the phone is stuck on the Samsung logo with the yellow triangle and just stays there and nothing happens. I also can't get into recovery or download mode at all. All I did was copy the CM and Gapps zips on my sd card, boot into recovery, wiped everything and installed from zip. Both installs were succesfull, so I rebooted, but the phone just hangs on this stupid boot screen. Any advice?
EDIT: plugging in the charger makes the battery pop up, but it never starts up the filling with green animation, it just stays grey with the spiny circle icon.

Take off your battery, put back it on , press volume down and power button and home button at the same time and hold it, what did you see? you see only samsung gt i9100 with the yellow one only?

I've eventually managed to get into download mode, but it said "Can't download, battery too low!". Problem is that the phone doesn't charge anymore. When I plug it in, the grey battery with the white circle appears, but it never actually charges. It gets really hot around the camera, but the battery doesn't charge even one bit.

First thing I would do is replace the battery. You might also have a usb port that is playing up, but try the battery first; they are fairly cheap.
Make sure you get either a genuine samsung or reputable brand battery.

The battery is brand new and it worked fine before the phone took this crap. And the USB port seems to be fine as well. I will try another battery tho, just to be sure. Just waiting for my USB jig now, it's supposed to arrive in the mail tomorrow.

Hey everyone, i need help with my galaxy s phone, i recently thought it would be a good idea to try upgrading my phone to the new gingerbread firmware 2.3
the problem is that i used the version for the vibrant phone, dumb mistake i know, but it was late and i wasn't thinking clearly, anyways my phone is now stuck in recovery mode and i cant do anything.
I cant get into download mode to reflash and i cant select any of the options im givin in the recovery menu, is there any way to fix this?
As far as getting into download mode, are you sure you are holding vol down with no battery in as you connect to your computer? You need to Odin back to stock in order to recover your phone. (Just FYI, there is no official gingerbread support, and the two roms we current have on gb are CM7 and Kaoscinate v7, both of which are awesome, but not fully functional at this point)

thanks for responding artvandelay440, holding down vol button while connecting to my computer via usb does nothing, the phone wont turn on. I also tried holding down the volume button, connecting the usb, then putting in the battery and it just boots up and goes straight to the recovery mode, i guess my main problem i need to solve right now is how to get to download mode.
I check some other forums and looked into how to get the download mode to pop up when your having problems, tried them all and nothing worked, except for the command prompt thing, which i couldnt figure out how to do.
a while back someone did the exact same thing as you. there was no way he got it I to recovery mode after because of the differences in hardware between the fascinate and vibrant. sorry buddy
If you can't get into download mode, there is no hope that we can offer. Just to be sure, you take the battery out, hold the volume down key, and then while still holding it, you plug the USB cable in. If that isn't working, then you are SOL. What file did you flash, and can you link to it?

the command line thing you are referring to is using ADB to reboot into either recovery or bootloader by the command "adb reboot recovery" or "adb reboot bootloader" No such option for d/l mode, though i'm afraid.

I wonder if the vibrant has a different button combo to get to download, and if it is remaped to that. Just something to look into. EDIT: NO, it is the same.
Try doing: adb reboot download - It works on a Vibrant according to the thread that I looked at. If that works, you are one lucky person, but it is always worth a try. You may not even be able to adb at all.
You could always try to make/buy a download mode jig.

You could always buy a jig-they are available from several reputable websites. I'd rather not recommend any, since i've never bought one, but google is your friend.

Yeah, I almost forgot about that. The question is.. Does it always work? I would think that it could work here since it is still a galaxy s varient flashed over. I'm not sure how deep down the download mode is and if it can be deleted/overwritten/corrupted. This is definitely worth it to save an expensive smartphone like the fascinate.
My SGH-i777 is running the latest ported ROM based on the CM9 March 23rd nightly. I've made a terrible mistake. I was renaming my last backup via ROM Manager, and decided I might as well do another one since my set up was where I wanted it. Like an idiot, I did it via RM, even though I've read there's a bug. Well, needless to say my phone won't boot past the Samsung yellow triangle boot screen.
I've been searching for the best method to fixing the issue, but can't find a solid answer. I'm able to get into download mode, I'm just not sure the safest route from here...
I originally rooted via heimdall on a Mac, but also have a PC - which I'm actually currently downloading ODIN on there.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
If you can get into download mode use the full version of Odin to flash a kernel with cwm and uncheck auto reboot. Then you should be able to hold both volume keys with power to get into recovery. Then you can reflash cm9
You really have to make sure to uncheck auto reboot though cause any non ics kernel booting ics won't be good.
EDIT: to avoid this, are you able to get into cwm by holding both volume keys + power?

Thanks for the quick reply. OK, I'll try as soon as I get ODIN on my PC. No, I'm not able to get into CWM. Holding both volume keys + power just results in the Samsung boot screen.
I was able to use ODIN to flash a kernel with CMW, and got a PASS! - and I didn't check off Auto Reboot...
My phone is still showing the download mode screen, though, a progress bar is now visible.
From here, should I:
pull the battery
unplug USB
place the battery back in
volume up + down + power to CWM
reflash CM9
I thought I replied, but looks like it didn't go through.
Anyway, thanks again. I did pretty much exactly what you said, and I'm back on a fresh CM9 build, everything working.
So lesson learned...uninstall ROM Manager so I don't make a careless mistake like that again.
Same

Can you get into download mode, like I could? Otherwise, I wouldn't know, sorry.
If you can, this is what I did (it worked for me, hopefully for you too, but you might want to search/read more before you dive in, just in case your problem isn't the same as mine):
power phone down
download a kernel with CWM to PC
if you never have, download/install drivers/Kies to PC
plug USB cable into phone/PC (phone still off)
hold vol down + power on phone to enter download mode
launch Odin on PC
uncheck reboot in Odin (important!)
add the kernel
run Odin
once you see PASS! in Odin, and the progress bar full/complete on your phone you're on the home stretch
while still plugged in, pull the phone battery
unplug USB from phone
battery back in
hold vol up + vol down + power to enter CWM
re-flash CM9
reboot
Good luck! Let me know how you make out.
Thanks
Turns out the only way I could get into download mode was pulling the battery, connecting to PC, holding power and volume and reconnecting to PC. Went right into download mode and I'm able to fix from there. Thanks so much! Didn't know that one! Appreciate all your help!
OK, here the story. My SGS2 started acting up a few days ago, it thinks it's charging all the time now. I searched and found that this seems to be a common problem with the port, so I cleaned the contacts on the microUSB connector, but it's not helping. I decided today that I'll just take it in since it's still under warranty, and I'd like to do it after work today since I live almost an hour away from the AT&T Store near the hospital. Problem was, I'm running AOKP on it and I don't have access to a computer with Odin on it where I can restore it to stock. Then I find the thread that details how I can download the .tar file and flash on the phone with Mobile Odin. Seems to work great, but it goes into a bootloop afterwards. One member posted that he had the same problem, but it was solved by booting into recovery and doing a full wipe. Here's where I have a problem now.
I can only boot into Odin mode, and it gives me the choice where it's asking me if I'm sure I want to load a custom binary or cancel and reboot. When I click that I want to load the binary, I get to the Odin mode screen; it reads
Custom Binary Download: No
Current Binary: Samsung Official
Downloading...
Do not turn off target!!
That's it. If I reboot normal, it goes into bootloop. Otherwise, it sits there with the battery logo showing, whether it's plugged in or not.
I'm pretty sure when I get home tonight, I can plug it in and get something going on my desktop, but I'd like to hit up the store before I head home. Anyone got any ideas or suggestions?
If you can't boot into recovery using the three button method, I'm not aware of any way to put it into recovery mode without a computer. You didn't say, but I assume you used vol+, vol-, & pwr?

Yup, and that's what comes up. I'm thinking it has something to do with the fact that the phone thinks it's plugged in. I guess I'll just have to plug it in my desktop when I get home and work on it from there. Worst case scenario is that I just take it to AT&T tomorrow as it is, tell them about the false charging problem, and when I tried to do factory reset to see if it would fix things, this is where it's stuck.
I can't believe I spent the first 30 years of my life without a cell phone and now I don't feel right if it won't work for a day or two.

need adb.
adb reboot recovery
Google
Update:
I actually managed to catch it when it didn't think it was plugged in and do full wipe. It worked after that, sorta. It didn't think it was plugged in all the time, but it was still real funky; like the power usage curve started high, had a sudden big drop, then went up from there. Plus, when it was off, it would flash between a grey battery with a circle and a green on, back and forth. And I couldn't power it on unless it was plugged in. Once I showed them that, AT&T gave me a new SGS2. It's rocking Shostock2 now, so problem solved.
My samsung vibrant running 4.0.4 ICS zenwich 1.8.4 randomly shut off today, not even able to turn on, it was the Sleep of Death I have got before, so i pulled battery and reboot, still nothing.
The phone now boots, but their is no display
The phone will literally turn on, have the 4 buttons light up on the bottom, have the screen be responsive to touches, but the physical display is off
I can unlock my phone by swiping, hear the volume up sound, even dial calls by blind touching. It is the same idea as a PC that is plugged in, just so VGA cable to the monitor.
I have tried rebooting to recovery, download mode and tried to heimdall, but it never finds my device, i tried to sdk in and reboot to download mode via cmd prompt but no luck finding device too
I am all out of ideas and nothing is seems to be working
Any advice on resolving this issue would be appreciated

You may've gotten into recovery, I can't really get into download mode like that. Try this:
Unplug USB & remove battery
Insert battery but do not power on.
Hold VOL-UP + VOL-DOWN
Insert USB and wait a few seconds, while still holding them

If so, that's good news and means your screen is not shot.
Try to get Heimdall to work. Are you in windows? Then you'll need to uninstall the samsung drivers and do this (from CM update guide):
CM update guide said:
1. Run the included zadig.exe in the drivers folder of the Heimdall Suite.
2. From the menu, choose Options ยป List All Devices.
3. From the drop down, select Samsung USB Composite Device or Gadget Serial.
4. Click Install Driver.
NOTE: A prompt may appear warning that the installer is unable to verify the publisher of the driver. Ignore it and select "Install this driver anyway."
5. Heimdall can now be used safely on the Windows computer.

Once heimdall is running, try grabbing the boot.img out of the zen zip and do this:
Code:

See if anything comes of that.

That's not good. Your phone might be done for then. I once repartitioned with no partition files and still download mode worked on a fresh battery pull.
Maybe try leaving the battery out for a while and see if it fixes itself, since it seems to be an electronics problem, maybe something needs time to reset or something.

Tonight I did the most stupidest thing and decided to pick nexus 4G in rom manager and downloaded CM10 ICS rom from rom manager itself and as soon it finished downloading I pressed install with dalvik cache wipe checked and now my phone is just stuck on boot screen that say "GALAXY S 4G exclusively from T-Mobile"
I tried to hard reset by pressing home/vol up,down/power button but the screen just goes black for about 3 seconds then the same "GALAXY S 4G exclusively from T-Mobile" screen come on and it just stay there. I also tried to plug in the phone to my laptop but the phone is not recognized anymore and nothing happens.
This is the only phone I have and I am lost. I really need my phone back. What do I need to do?
please HELP:crying:

Okay, okay relax and stay calm first and foremost. I assure you, we've all been there (at least I have been lol). Needless to say, it sounds like you can fix this...which is good! I suggest you first head over to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=954509 and download the toolbox. Once its downloaded, install the necessary drivers if you have not already. After that, you need to get your phone into download mode. There are a few ways to do this, and people prefer going about it in different ways...I'd suggest taking out your battery, and then popping it back in and holding the power on and volume up button at the same time and hopefully it will boot into download mode (it'll be yellow). If that doesn't work after a few minutes, remove the battery again, pop it in and try holding the power, the volume up and the little "arrow up" soft key at the bottom of the screen and hopefully this time it will go into DL mode. Once you're in DL mode, connect your phone to the computer and use the toolbox to flash to stock. This will bring your phone back to factory conditions and you'll be set to go. Be sure not to remove your phone while its flashing back to stock until you are given the green light. Good luck!

Thanks for trying to help, but is not working. I tried both options multiple times but it would not go into DL mode. I can't believe I did this to my only phone

Relax, relax...I assure you. Everything will be fine. Your phone isn't dead. Getting into DL mode can be a pain, and honestly it took me a few tries my first time also. You just need to find the correct combo. Try with phone off, holding volume up and down at the same time and then plug in the usb until the phone boots up into DL (hopefully). If this doesn't work, report back. If it does, go through the steps in my last post.

Another thing to try, pull battery, SIM card and SD Card. Then plug in USB to computer, plug in to phone, pop the battery in holding down volume keys (up and down) -- its a little tricky but you get the hang of it. It was only consistent way my phone would go into DL mode.
Same Problem

What exactly is your problem? Please list your device model and what ROM or stock android version you were using when issue began. Any other info you have would be helpful.

Your problem is the kernel is for the t959v galaxy s 4g and the ROM is for t959 vibrant. You can fix it in Odin with the stock firmware but we need to figure out which device you have. Do you have a stock front facing camera?

im using a samsung galaxy s 4g running on gingerbread (the latest version for this phone) I got the instructions for how to root my phone from youtube and everything was good until today when it just got stuck on the boot screen. how can I fix this. I need a professionals assistance for this.
This is the Samsung vibrant t959 (3g). It looks like you have the Samsung galaxy s 4g t959v. These are totally different phones, you need the galaxy s 4g forums, these files for the vibrant will not work on your phone. Find the correct forum on xda website and flash back to stock for the t959v
