Hi all, newbie here
Just received my shiny new S3 this morning and it's beautiful - haven't had a chance to power it up yet.
Thing is, I'm a complete OCD freak when it comes to my gadgets, and I've noticed that on each of the four corners of my handset (on the bezel) there are small lines that appear to be joinery spots, but I'm not quite sure. At first I thought it was a crack but then realised that there are small lines on each corner, which leads me to believe it is joinery and not cracks. The lines are not that visible but if you focus you can spot them.
Sorry to be so OCD but can anyone else confirm this?
Thank you
Yep, mine has the same. Never noticed before.
You b*****d!!! I have noticed it now!!!
I too have OCD........

Haha I am sorry! We can all suffer with our joinery spots together haha
me too, think of it as the design
Probly moulding marks
i noticed em on mine as soon as i got the phone! and i dont have OCD ! LOL.
crappy manufacturing process if you ask me! they could could have moulded it in one piece! should have been made out of metal... the bezel at least!

Saw it right from the moment of unpacking, too... and I don't have OCD neither.
But that barely visible and after a few days with the handset, I'm actually glad it's plastic and not metal... It's softer, warmer, and it will actually absorb shocks better, effectively protecting the screen a tad more. And it's moulded in one piece...Only the mould was not in one piece itself
I noticed mine today which led me here. Thing is i saw a post on the net and the guy had one just below home button and cpw changed the phone for him.
Same lines are on the Galaxy Nexus. I never saw them but my friend dropped his phone and thought he cracked it in those 4 spots. Then he asked me to check mine and sure enough, they were there.
Mine too...............
I have also seen those 4 hair line cracks/joints around all corners on my white S3 this morning. Because I already requested for return and refund from eXpansys-usa.com. so before sending then I want to confirm it, Is it normal?. otherwise they will laugh on me.:silly:
I think the 4 corners are normal, but the other random spots aren't. I ordered mine from Expansys-usa.com too. I don't have the random spots, but do have the 4 corners and they aren't like the one in the picture. They are hard to see unless you look for them. Like it's how the phone is put together.

Cracks in Plastic around edge on my Galaxy S3
I noticed a crack near where I plug the charger into the phone. At first I thought it was a seam where the plastic came together so I didn't worry about it. Now I have noticed that the phone has developed several small cracks around the edge (near the volume rocker and at the top corner.). I have never dropped it and have always taken care of it.
Today I did a quick search and found that this is a problem others have reported so I gave Sprint a call to find out what could be done. They said to bring it into the closest sprint store which is 70 miles away. The only other option they gave was to call Samsung. So I did.
Samsung said they could repair the phone but they needed to take my credit card info and would charge me if it was due to damage and I wouldn't have my phone for over a week! Needless to say I am beyond frustrated. I am a loyal Samsung customer... Have 2 galaxy s2 phones ( for my kids) a Tab2 and just got the Note 10.1. I am even considering upgrading to the note II when it comes out. I am completely concerned about the quality of plastic that they are using in this phone and am reconsidering my loyalty.
Guess I have to take it back to sprint when I am close to their store to get anything done without having to give a credit card or be phone less for a week! What a pain in the arse! Should I un-root my phone before doing this to avoid the inevitable "warranty" - issue?
Are there others that have noticed these cracks and gotten any resolution from Samsung or their carriers?
Mine has a crack

i was just wandering never dropped the phone so how could it break but i even saw it with a magnifying glass it is surely a crack
gotta complain samsung to use such a cheap quality product
I am very keen on the Z2 as my first Sony phone but the reports I have read about Z1 phone screens randomly cracking on their own has me worried. How serious is this problem really?
Is this just the 0.1% of phones that the people are complaining about? Or is it more than that. I am assuming the screen used on the Z2 is the same as predecessors.
Screen on the Z2 is not the same as one on the Z1, and personally i think that cracking screen problem is weird, and i not believe it.

I know the technology behind the glass is different, but are you sure the glass itself is different?
9 page thread about the issue on Sony forums [cannot post links yet ]
You should really not worry about that "cracking" problem.

hehe yeah shatter proof screen will crack without ANY reason!
no reason but maybe some a**h*** sit on phone and then report nothing happened for warranty and etc.
think little bit logical! is it possible that a slim glass crack by itself without any reason? NO
so dragontile glass also won't crack by itself!

There's been a scientifically proven discovery that connected cracking screen phenomenon to wearing a very tight pair of slim chino jeans...
Lol.....yeah, that'd be because.......
Tight fitting trousers + contour of wearers butt = phone being bent/twisted into shapes that Sony never intended = dumb s**t user damage.......
As far as I know, nobody has produced a flexible smartphone yet....lmao

I never gave any credit to those rumors... Until today when the screen of my Z2 just cracked on me.
Phone was in my pocket, I left home for a walk and when I pulled the phone out of my pocket the backglass was completely cracked... I am positive that I did not hit anything or did anything unusual. Pretty passed that it happened to me on a week old phone which I got from Taiwan so no possibility to return/exchange under warranty (I am in the US).

Ummmmm what about the lg flex???? Seriously tho, i wouldnt worry, i know its different glass but ive had a galaxy note for the last 2 years, lives in my back pocket, only damaged the screen once, damaged digitizer by throwing phone at wall, then broke lcd while attempting to remove the digitizer....... unless you're extremely heavy i doubt it'd be an issue

Phone was in left front pocket of a loose fitting jeans. This is where I always keep my phone, have gone without problem for years with iPhone, Xperia S, Nokia Lumia 900... never had a problem. Back of phone is always facing outside.
I tend to have the phone there and keep my hands in my pocket when i walk - only thing I can see is that my hand put a little pressure on the back glass and caused the cracking as I am positive I did not it anything and never keep anything else but the phone in that pocket. This still seems to me like a design problem because there is no "unnatural" pressure or wrong use here for a cellphone. Back glass just cracked all over, there is no clear breaking point that would indicate a shock, just cracks on the entire surface of the back glass.

Do any seasoned Sony phone owners have any comments to make about this? I'm a long time iPhone user looking to pre-order the Z2 and since reading about one alleged self cracked Z2 screen here and countless self-bending and self-cracking Z1 screens on other forums, I'm wondering if anyone else thinks this is cause for concern... Should we take these reports with a grain of salt ?

It's the same thing as always. It's the usual 0.1%.
So far only one person reported cracked Z2 here (but posted it twice, once here and once in other thread, but it's still one cracked Z2).
Every phone has such "issues", the louder the launch (and more anticipated), the more such problems emerge.
See literally EVERY single iPhone launch: cracking, scratching, bending, twisting etc. and I have yet to see in person a single defected (out of the box) iPhone. At least that's my personal experience.
It how Sony responds though which is the most concerning.
So far they've refused to acknowledge the problem and have denied warranty claims.
Whereas Apple will just straight out replace it.

Yes! It happened to me!
I bought the Z2 a week ago. Never let it drop, always kept it in my left pocket with nothing else.
This morning I woke up and it had this super clean crack all over the backside of the phone...
Called Sony, they said I had to go to the shop where I bought it.
Went to the shop, they said it was not yet acknowledged by Sony so they can't do anything about it.
I'm a Galaxy user that just switched to Sony.... mistake? I think so!

Well, I am based in Amsterdam. Here it's mostly cold but it was suddenly around 20 degrees (which is extremely hot for may in Amsterdam) when this crack happened. I know temperatures can affect glass, but with this small change in temperature...?
So far I have see those problems and those make me think twice before buy it.
1- getting too hot easily. Not only when recording 4k videos some users find it getting too hot while browsing Internet. That's not acceptable. I don't want it to be blown off in my hand.
2- screen is dim. I thought that's since I watch the videos on YouTube. Other phones such as samsung s5 and HTC One m8 has got a lot brighter screen. If it is sunny you can see your phone screen that's not good for people especially in hot countries.
3- gap issues. I don't know if this is a big issue but still shouldn't be like that.
4- speakers. So people are happy some people are not. Some people are having issue with income calls they say it's not loud enough and only one speaker works.
Those are so far I can remember/told by people here. Maybe that's why it's been delayed for release who knows.
Do you guys have any other issues with the phone? Please let us know £550 for pay as you go phone is a lot of money I don't wanna regret after I buy it.

1..... All phones these days get warm when in use, id be more concerned if it wasnt heating up, as for the 4k recording it doesnt bother me too much, its not a feature ill be using anytime soon and im assuming the related software can be fine tuned and updated by sony so it doesnt strain the processor as much
2......Im in great britain so not the sunniest place but weather was quite bright over easter weekend and i had no issues seeing the screen outside
3......As long as its not affecting the water resistance, who cares. If in doubt either treat it like any other phone near water or get it tested by sony
4......Speakers im 50/50 on.... the sound is crisp and clear, just not as loud as other phones. The sound is supposed to be mono on an incoming call, it also cuts to one speaker on my blutooth speakers and on my galaxy if i have headphones in and recieve a call the right earphone cuts out

yep id definately be concerned if it didnt heat up while im using it, just about every electrical item i own heats up when in use, if it doesnt then its probably not working properly.......
I dont mind gaps...... as long as they dont affect the waterproofing, my z2 appears to have a couple of (extremely small, less than 1mm) gaps, but im not about hide it away in shame or demand an exchange for a cosmetically perfect handset.......... unless of course they cause the phone to die a watery death, but i doubt that
and finally i'll stick with my overall opinion of the speakers, but as for the one speaker dropping out ignore anything i said, i was mistaking what you was on about with something else.... my bad lol
I have just received my z2 this morning - opened the box and found the phones back glass panel is raised above the edge of the phone in one corner by 1mm or so.. from the Power button to the bottom corner.
It spoils the whole feel of the phone as its easy to catch the glass.. I imagine its going to get damaged quickly
So I now have to contact company I got it from to arrange a swap, or send it off to Sony.. probably at my own expense.
Premium phone and price with not so premium build quality.. This should never have passed Quality Control.

give it back to place you bought. do not give a single penny for returning it. its not your fault and it is not supposed to come out from your pocket. do not get it fixed get a brand new one.
faulty phones make me think again why the z2 is postponed so many weeks ahead. there is definitely something wrong with this phone in one point. overheating, out of shape design, gaps on the top of the device, speakers etc.

Start of may is not guaranteed for release. Some companies giving date for 24th of may. Hope everybody will be happy at the end of the day but Sony is not doing well so far. Postpone is a really bad start and faulty phones comes up after waiting months or weeks is more disappointing. If you are not ready for launch do not announce your phone.

Oh man there are a lot more problems than I thought. People complaning to Sony directly instead of telling people here . I think Im right with my opinion never buy a newly released phone there are always problems at some point. Wait a month or so and get them after. My wife bought newly s4 when it was out the phone was getting far too hot she was scared to use it cos it might blow off on her hand. we complained and got a brand new one which is okay. All my old iphones were the same some had sound problem some had glass problem.
It seems that Sony were in so much of a rush to assemble the phones to get them 'out there' that quality control suffered big time.
Am gonna make sure that mine is perfect before keeping it even if it means returning it time after time.
Am hoping all of these build issues are solved when its officially released in May

UPDATE:
OK, now it's a widespread issue.
It looks like it could be the glue drying or something else.
Because the issue appears after some days of usage.
Btw, I've returned my phone
-------------------------
I bought the Mate 20 Pro the 18th of October, at first the display looked fine but it's been some days already that I'm noticing a yellow/green tint on the right side of the display that reminds me so much to the problem that happened with the Nexus 4 (it was because of the glue [https://www.pocketables.com/images/....com/images/2012/12/nexus-4-yellow-screen.jpg) ).
And it's getting worse.
It's not just me, another user on XDA and another user on Reddit also said that are having the same issue.
If it's the glue, even if you don't notice the issue right now on your device, it might appear in the next days, as it happened to me.
These are my pictures:
What do you think?
I'll go and return my phone for another one this Monday. And if the new one has the same problem I'll ask for a refund
UPDATE:
More things I've noticed:
After playing a burn in fix video, the way that this issue looks is different, it changes.
Here I took some pictures of the display with a black background:

NEWEST UPDATE:
There seem to be two different issues, or maybe one. Maybe it's related with the display controller

if its glue, its a manufacture faulty batch (lets hope). This even happened years ago with Samsung phones due to poor QA (and for Samsung that's huge).
While highly unlikely, if you happen to find its software related or to do with w/display driver, post it in the EMUI/software problem/fault thread so you can let others know. Also, be sure to get in touch with Huawei and keep us posted on your results.
EDIT 1/11: From what I can read on the first 30-40 pages its moistly screens with LG and not BOE. Its in multiple regions, so let's way a few more weeks and see if the newer BOE batches or wave 2 of the shipments fixes the issue...

Yup sending it back to mobile phones direct tomorrow...
I have similar problem. The brighter shade can be visible on both sides ( on the right side little bit more expressive) and at notch edges. I'm returning phone tommorow . Sucha a shame :/
I have the same problems
Following this. I also have the same issue. Not sure though if it's to do with the screen refractions on the curved glass. Will wait to see what happens with others. What apps are people using to test?

I thought that. I've never had a curved like this. I put a black wallpaper on and it's fine. Put a colour one on and you see it
A great way to tell is if you have a white chrome window and then pull the notification shade down it shows all around the notch. I think it's something to do with greys on low light levels?
Yeah greys at low light seem to vary in colour a little, if it's really bad keep swapping the phone. I had to change my Nexus 6P made by Huawei 3 times before I got a good screen. Mine is slightly lighter on the bottom third but it's hardly noticeable so I'm going to stick with it.

I've got the XDA app open and it's green on the left , green around the top and bottom left. Think I hear the 6T
For me it was netflix loading screen,it's gray, and the amount of shade was overwhelming :-/ I'll check another version tommorow,if the issue will show up on another device i quit and wait for S 10 probably.

Be cautious,I saw nothing at first day of usage. I think this issue is getting worse over time.

I am not going to defend Samsung etc, however if your unit is broken, got defects, or you are not happy with something - just send it back, ask for replacement or just return it then buy new one.
It's not just his... looks like a lamination issue.
Not something you should see on a flagship display.
Rather than owe up to it Samsung is making excuses saying it's normal. Translation: there must be a lot of them with this defect...

First: If you were read article you will knew that Samsung said it is manufacturing side effect so maybe it is not so obvious to return the unit. The defect is in the same place on all reported phones... Could be hard to get one without it as guy in twitter try 2 times and both have the same issue.
Second: If you were look inside the twitter comments you will see that it is not only uk but also in usa and other regions that are affected.
Third: 23u is my primary phone, so not so easy to just return it and stay without the phone as i also use esim. And more over i can get another unit with the same defect or even they will not accept it as they mention as it is side effect of manufacturing.
Right now it is not disturbing the use of the phone, but as i know it is there it is quite not comfy...
It's really irritating that people look for this nonsense that doesn't affect the functioning of the phone one iota and then share it around and ruin everyone else's enjoyment of their devices.
I can confirm that my US Ultra has this. Never would have seen it if it wasn't pointed out.

First - I read it, if you are not happy with the product, don't use it, simple. You still have 14 days to send it back if you are not happy, vote with your wallet.
Second - And? Not sure how big % of phones got that issue, but same as above applies, if people are not happy they should send units back. Maybe then samsung would acknowledge issue.
Third - No one force you to stay without phone, if you sold etc. your previous one or sent it back for trade in, then make a complain to Samsung.
And fourth, if you read my post with understanding you would get that I do not defend them. Sending back bad/wrong/broken etc product is our right, Samsung and S23 is not the only phone on the market, if you have issues with them, than feel free to buy something else.
I was angry with oneplus few years ago and guess what, I am on samsung now.

If that's what they say and your unit have it, vote with you wallet and send it back, there will be no change when people moan on this forum and Samsung keep their sales.

This is nothing but people hunting for reasons to dislike the phone. It has zero effect on functionality and you have to really be looking to even see it. It's a nothingburger discovery some iPhone fanboy found and put on Twitter to cause drama.

The problem is it's not supposed to be there at all. Not on my N10+'s. On a display that's not acceptable. It's a manufacturing defect and right where it's always in your face.
Worse, pretty sure Samsung was aware of this defect but they shipped them anyway. Like a brat they do what they want then make lame bs excuses for their actions. This isn't a injection molding tab Sammy, it's a screw up.
At this point there's no telling if over time it will get worse and/or spread. I'd return it for a cash refund especially at this price point, where the defect is and Samsung's condescending attitude.
but this is only visible with a strong light source, with certain angle of light with screen off. it has no impact on usability. i have seen it in the past on other curved displays

I upgraded to s23u with EE and i got it on 13th , 512gb ,green. Everything fine, until 3 days later when i installed a Samsung screen protector on,using a flashlight i was eyeballing for dust particles using a sticker. Right bottom corner i noticed a smudge, wiped off, still there, anyway upon close look ,in certain angle using the flashlight, i noticed this crease/bubble/dent around 4mm in width and 2mm height . To me it looks like a dent inwards rather than a bubble. Checked my pixel 7pro,nothing, checked my missus s21plus(flat screen),nothing, then i remembered i have stashed a galaxy s8(still works a take faster photos than s23u though) anything like this, screen was perfect.
Don't get me wrong, only in bright light ,shining directly on the screen you can see it. The touch screen works perfectly.
I contacted EE, the tech support said it looks like delamination or sort and could spread in time, right ,i said i do like the phone and i would like an exchange. EE delivered next day the replacement, as you guessed, same issue, this time half in size, almost not visible, but because i knew where and how to look ,i spotted it right away. Also very fine crease on the right, but almost not visible(unless you know what to look for).
Can i live with this ,yes i can,do i want to take a risk, thinking that potentially, ot could spread over thetime, hmm ,i don't. Opened a second return.
For ppl who said that this is not a big deal, remember, th ise damn phone is expensive and it should be perfect, like my previous s22ultra amd my 5 years old S8
I attached some photos 1,the first phone and 2
glad i am not that inquisitive otherwise i would still use nokia 3110
My S23 Ultra has it. Then I just realized after a year of using my S22 Ultra that this is the case as well... Guess it doesn't really matter.

I'm still having trouble seeing it in these pictures, even when it's directly pointed out, lol. I'm not gonna examine my phone. It looks generally fine and I'm gonna stick with it.

I think the issue is that most people wouldn't even notice if someone didn't point it out to them in special lighting. I think you should be able to discuss and point out anything you deem flawed. But on the other end you should also expect pushback from people who think you are just being spoiled when you have the option to return it. I have noticed it on my Galaxy S23 Ultra US version but only by looking at it in lighting. I think the device is fantastic and even with that little flaw I will keep my device since I can't really notice it since I have a case on it.

It's probably present on certain batches; some will have it, others not. A major QC screw up. If the defect was minor you wouldn't be able to see it at all.
This is a defect that could effect the survivability of the glass. Glass is subject to some of the laws of hydrodynamics. This deformity causes new stress points. It may not crack there but in another area of the display, hydrodynamics. Glass is a peculiar substance with bizarre properties. Of course if it breaks Samsung will say it's your fault for dropping it.
DON'T SAY YOU WEREN'T WARNED
