Hi everyone,
So basically tomorrow is my birthday and my parents would be getting me something. I was thinking of a new gadget.
I currently have the Google Nexus S
So for mobile device I've got the Galaxy Nexus in mind, or the HTC one X.
But lately I've been thinking about tablets. I do not mind getting a tablet to pair with my Nexus S. I was thinking about the kindle fire, but I do not know how to get it in Singapore. Or the Asus Transformer, but im unsure of it because of the price.
So can you recommend me a tablet that lies with the price range below 350-400USD or $500 SGD. ?
So what do you think? And or is the galaxy nexus upgrade a better choice? Please help in advising me. I'm in a dilemma.

If I were in you I would only think about the Samsung Galaxy S2 (i9100) or the Samsung Galaxy Note.
The S2 is very well supported by a wide community of modders, has got a marvelous screen, and great hardware.
The Note is bigger but still smaller than a tablet, and gives you the possibility to use a very sensitive stylus.
Have a look at the size, and have your choice. If my S2 breaks I will buy a Note.
HTC One X has a Tegra 3 chip, currently the most powerful SoC solution. So I would suggest going for it - it wil be powerful even after 2 years.

I got the S2 but i would rather want the Samsung Galaxy Nexus cuz it's more "Google" if you know what I mean.. cuz i hate the touchwiz, I know you can get a ROM but still.. AND the nexus got the Navigation Bar!
If I were in your place I would have gone for tablet, having two gadgets of different leagues is better than upgrading one.

Ok I'll add some more to your confusion!
Getting a new device is like getting a new pair of shoes. You should get the one that fits you comfortably. Here's a short list of what I'd get if I were to buy a phone (depending on need/want):
*available phones only
-Xperia S: Camera monster and cheaper than the OneX, at Par with SGS2's performance
-OneX: future proof (probably good for the next 2-3 years), powerful GPU
-Samsung Galaxy Nexus: timely updates (that's it)
-Samsung Galaxy S2: wide dev support, probably still good for the next year or so (but the resolution is too low IMO)
-OneS: beats the OneX in some benchmarks (in their native resolutions), IMO S4 chip is better than the 4-PLUS-1 A9 tegra 3, more affordable too.
IF you're going for a TAB and you can't afford a Transformer Prime don't settle for the Nook or a Fire. I suggest you get a Motorolla XOOM. It's tegra 2 powered and has an HD screen (1280x800) compared to the 1024x600 of the Nook and Fire, and it has a very wide dev support.
I suggest you go for a TAB and don't upgrade your phone. That way you'll have your Nexus S (which can still run almost every app on the Play Store) and have the XOOM for your multimedia satisfaction

We have a number of tablets here where I work, and the one that I like the most is defiantly the Asus transformer. But that being said I agree with the last guy the XOOM is a good one and also is most acers. But price aside I would say the Transformer Prime would be a fine choice!

Thanks dude!! I really sincerely appreciate it it must have taken you a lot of time to write that out. Thanks good news I've got a few more days to decide. And haha you've added to my confusion
I've ruled out tablets for now.. this is due to the reason that I wouldn't bring it outside of the home anywhere with me unless I'm going overseas on holiday. This is due to school and lack of time..
So now you've narrowed me down to 2 devices which I had my eyes on. The One X and the Galaxy Nexus. Looking at the One X's development section it Loos empty. That's probably due to cwm being recently released for it. So in the 5days room I've got (parents waiting for a $150 voucher, phone costs $400) I will check the development section of the One X.
Now I wonder, which roms do you think will come to the one X? Aokp? Cm9? These are some basic concerns I have.. looks like I might have to actually go with the One X. How about MIUI on the One X?
Something that bothers me is the One X has a very different look from the Nexus. Minimalistic stuff on the launcher would be pretty difficult to achieve.. so any screenshots of cool designs done on the One X?

It's kind of hard to recommend a phone better than the Galaxy Nexus in it's price range. However I have 2 options I'd consider:
Xperia S:

Both these devices are significantly more affordable than the Galaxy Nexus and both has the same, or even better, performance.
Personally, I can afford the OneX but I'll be getting the Xperia S. IMO (benchmarks aside) there is nothing the OneX can do that the Xperia S can't, at least for the next year or so. And in two years time I'll probably be changing phones again, so I'll go with the Xperia S for now.

If they've fixed the I/O issues, maybe. But on the whole, my reaction was actually rather along the lines of "please no." Samsung's build quality on Google devices has been very solid in my opinion, they make excellent NAND and screen tech, and they're a bit saner about speaker placement.
Perhaps most importantly though, I actually hate metal builds on tablets. Mainly because anyone who's owned a flat-back metal tablet (such as an iPad for me, and brief experiences with the "premium" Transformers) knows what an awful grating sound these things can make when you set them down on some surfaces. The rubberized back might be many things to different people, but it's definitely not noisy.

This actually makes a lot of sense. Samsung recently just came out with the Tab 3 10.1, which based on a dollar-per-performance metric, is inferior to their old Nexus 10 in every way. It wouldn't make sense for them to release yet another tablet with even better performance for the same price.
I actually like the rubbery/grippy back of the N10. It may not look as pretty as aluminum, but it's easier to hold.
Also, since the new Transformer Pad Infinity has the Tegra 4, my guess is the new N10 will come with the Tegra 4. It's either that or the SD 800. In any case, the new N10 will be a beast, and I can't wait to get one.
If it's true it will probably be based on the new Asus Transformer that is due out anytime. So the new Nexus 10 maybe tegra 4 based.

Based on the recent Qualcomm/AOSP debacle going on right now, I think it's more likely to be the Tegra.
Update: Former Wall Street Journal reporter Amir Efrati has retracted his statement that Samsung is making the new Nexus 10.
Well I'm glad I got my (belated) N10 and didn't wait.
Asus QC is extremely poor. Two N7's I got last year had screen lift. Asus gimped the memory speed in last year's Transformers and many people are furious about that.
The two Samsung products I have owned have been perfect build wise - Nexus S and the N10 I just got. Can't fault them.

Hey guys, current N7 (2012) owner here. I'm excited to see what Asus will bring to the table. Here are some thoughts/concerns as someone who is wanting to purchase a 2nd gen N10:
-The screen on the current N10 is amazing. I hope Asus at least matches it.
-Speaker placement. The front-facing speakers are a fantastic design decision. I hope Asus maintains this design aesthetic.
-I am hoping for an LTE model. Both gen N7's from Asus have LTE, and I hope this means it is coming to the N10. Missing LTE is the biggest thing (other than a 2nd gen on the horizon) that is keeping me from an N10 right now.
-I'm not concerned about build issues. The current N10 seems to have a few issues of its own. I have had zero problems with my N7, so I know Asus can put out a nice product.
-Upgraded chipset is a no-brainer, but will we see more ram? I sort of hope so...
-Price point; I hope they lower the wifi-only models a bit and price the LTE's where the current wifi models are. Asus knows how to keep build costs down, so I am hoping this is feasible
So that is kind of my thoughts on the 2nd Gen N10. I've got my fingers crossed on this bad boy. I hope it doesn't disappoint.

I made the same experience with the N7 and the transformer prime. And even worst than the build quality is the customer care. No Asus products for me, thanks, but no thanks!

Have to strongly agree. My wife has the Transformer Prime and it requires a custom rom and hacks such as requiring a high class external sd card to handle i/o operations to bypass the abysmal internal storage. With Nexus devices not having access to external sd I would steer well clear of the new Nexus until sufficient feedback tells you otherwise.
This screen shot is supposedly "proof" that Asus is building the next N10.
This is what comes back from the UPC that's posted.
Asus could end up making the next N10 but not by "winning out" over Samsung. Based on the rather marginal sales and low margin of the N10 #1 Samsung may have decided to pass. Asus is incredibly good at making a lot (features) for a little (price). But as others have already said the components used, like low-cost NAND, are how they make the numbers work. After following the Prime and Infinity it would take a lot of change in Asus' approach for me to even consider one of their devices.
Really hoping that it is not built by Asus. I may end up buying a nexus 10 now instead of waiting later for the new one. There is something about asus I don't like .

Having owned a tf101 and a tf201, I really hope that ASUS doesn't get into the Nexus line. The tf 201 in particular is garbage, unless, as stated before, you use a custom rom ...and even then, to get decent performance, you need to hack it to use a high speed SD card to get what should have been its IO speed to begin with. Couple that with the myriad of issues that came about due to poor quality control, such as light bleed, LCD mura, dead pixels, and their horrible RMA policies (like making you pay to ship a defective device to them for repairs...several times in some cases) and an ASUS tab is a no-go for me, no matter what the specs are.

If its ever a tegra on the new N10 then im off, not buying that crap. Owning a N7 2012 edition right now and its a disappointment ... Bad screen, horrible speakers and that tegra chip heating up so bad... Thinking of buying a current gen N10 and trading in my N7. Worth? Opinions please I mean i read reviews and such but actual user opinion would be awesome Will surely install CM on it though
That's what I'm also thinking about doing. The nexus 7 used to be great, but the chip aged horribly. It isn't as smooth or fast as it used to be .

I'm also interested in some user opinions here.. too late to sway me though as mine is already being shipped. Probably get the new one too when it comes out although I just had my first Asus tablet in the new Nexus 7 but had to return due to touchscreen issues twice.

For all the people complaining about Asus's N7 build quality, there's an equal percentage of people complaining about Samsung's N10 build quality, I assure you.
In any case, when the new N10 comes out, I'll be one of the first in line to buy it. It's either coming packed with the Tegra 4 or the SD 800.

I actually love Asus products.. I can't speak for the tablets with the exception of my short stint with Nexus 7v2. Aside from my missed touches I loved it. I use their motherboards alot. So to answer your question. ... you are not alone, there are at least 2 of us.

First about me: I have been using a GT-P6200L Galaxy Tab 7+ GSM, HSPA+ as my primary device. Yes, I carry a 7" tablet with a built-in phone and have been doing it for over a year. People have looked at me like I have 2 heads. But I was clearly ahead of my time with large Phablets are concerned.
I just spent a while in my local AT&T store evaluating a few Samsung products. I was interested in the MEGA as it is still big but more manageable than my Tab.
Certainly the MEGA is a great size but it DOES lag. Even my P6200 upgraded to Jelly Bean, does not lag. It is not the quickest machine on the planet but it is smooth and quick.
I then examined both the Note II and III. The 3 is certainly nice, especially the screen. The Note II seems like the value proposition. But it is simply NOT BRIGHT ENOUGH. Sure, it is high resolution and Amoled but it is DIM vs. other machines. And after using a 7" Tab and contemplating the MEGA, the Note is simply too small.
AT&T has a very nice 7" Tab 3 but you cannot have a phone in it. I can buy an international version with a phone, but NO LTE.
I like the LG Optimus Pro, but I already bought one for my wife and it is also too small.
I guess I'll stick with my 7" Tab+ until they make a 6"+ LTE phablet. Hurry up already!

I also have been carrying a 7" phone around for nearly 2 years - original GTab P1000. I decided it was time to get something "up to date" - since I was never going to get a working Android 4.x on the GTab. After experiencing Samsung abandoning the P1000, & didn't want to get an "end of life" device, which counted the GTab 2 out for me. Going to a smaller screen concerned me - that eventually counted the Note 2 out. I decided to go for the Mega 6.3 ...
... I have absolutely no regrets. I have no lag on the device, its quick & smooth, & pretty much a perfect size. Screen is large enough to be usable, but the device is small enough to comfortably fit in a pocket, or on a belt clip. One of the best purchases I have made
Did you check to see if they offer the 7" Tab 3 in Australia? ?? If so... theres your LTE...But..does the Tab 3 have a flash for the camera??? I dont think it does.. I like my large screen phablets with flash....
I still rock the crap out of my GT p6800..
Non LTE.. but H+ speeds with ATT -US...gets 7-8 d/l mps on slow traffic...

Coming from an S2/Note 1/4g but no voice 7.0+ combo on T-Mobile, I wanted one device but kind of ran into similar problems. Neither the international voice Tab 3, Note 2, nor Mega gave me everything I really wanted- decent camera (out with the Tab), LTE (out with the Tab again!), decent price (no new Note 2 or Mega), a bigger screen than my Note 1 (still think the 2 feels smaller), and pentaband hspa (no Tab, Mega), and enough accessories (out with all but the Note 2). I considered a 6200 for easy sim swapping with my S2 (to keep a compact alternative) but didn't want to deal with the proprietary charger any more. Also, those tablets still cost a LOT!!!
I ended up compromising more than I wanted with a really clean, $325 T-Mobile Note 2. I like the phone, it seems to have fantastic battery life so far, and it's more pocketable than my original Note but I still want something bigger. I'll probably keep my 7.0+ as a home device or getting a voice enabled Tab 3 7" or 8" down the road to go with the new Note. Hell, I'm not even carrying THAT yet because I messed up putting my first screen protector ever on it.
The MEGA would be just fine with a faster processor, 1080p screen and Gorilla Glass. Is that too much to ask? I'll be sticking with my smooth as silk, nicely screened Tab 7+. But I'm looking for the next device...
Hi, I live in Mexico and Im about to buy a tablet this black friday for school. But I also play some games like Asphalt, Clash of Clans and Dead Trigger 2.
I know that the Nexus 9 has issues with the display and applications not being optimized, on the other hand if I buy the tab Ill get a beautiful display and better optimization for apps but crappy internals, I have a Nexus 5 and my past phone was a Nexus 4, I can survive Samsung's lack of updates since I'll get to try them right away from my Nexus 5. Is the Nexus 9 really worth it? I need it for school and it'll be my first tablet.
I know this is a bit silly to ask in the Nexus 9 section but hey, if it wasnt worth paying the price Im sure you guys will let me know Thanks in advance!
PS: Right now the Tab S is around 380 USD in Amazon and Nexus 9 420 for the 32 GB version.
Give me your opinion on which one should I buy or which one would you buy if you could decide again between Tab and Nexus! Thanks again!

The Nexus will serve you well for the coming year.
Productivity related activities, the N9 with its 4:3 screen will be better especially for your work.
Like you said, the Tab S has a Super Amoled screen which makes videos and colours very very pretty.
But for your work, N9.
Not to mention since the N9 and Tab are about the same price, why not get the one with better internals.
I had the samsung galaxy tab s and was not satisfied with it. Touch wiz blew the whole experience to hell, it was like having an really old tablet with wonderful display.
If you watch a lot of media then probably 16:9 (samsung) is preferrable but 4:3 (nexus) is more comfortable when browsing the web.
Touchwiz is terrible, which means that you'll be forced to ROM it and void the warranty.
Internals are outdated compared to the N9. Despite it being an 'octa-core' it's still slower in multi-core benchmarks than the dual core K1 in the N9.
^also s tab is older chipset is older and the s tab runs a higher resolution
Tab S would be great if it wasn't for the Exynos chipset and Touchwiz. I'm also not a fan of capacitive buttons, especially on a tablet with fairly small bezels as they will be accidentally activated.
After a lot of research, I almost decided to buy the Z3 Tab Compact so a natural thing to do is to check out Xda.
I'm astonished that "there's no love" if you will. Other devices get many many pages of threads and the Z3 Tab has 10 developments (and 2 are rule stickies!) Even the Samsung devices with the "knox" crap got plenty of love.
Just wondering why?
Nothing in my research suggests the Z3 Tab is such a horrible device that nobody wants to do anything with.
Maybe it's good as it is without extra development ?

Its not a very popular device, but make no mistake, it's a great tablet. Especially with lollipop it's an awesome experience.
Yes it does seem to be lacking in the popularity stakes. Love mine tho again I did with most the device I buy like z ultra and n900, odd devices to some but irreplaceable to me.

I just got one, having owned both the Samsung Galaxy S Tab 8.4 and Dell Venue 8 7840.
Other than through Secondipity (where I bought my 32GB Z3 Tab for $330 last week), it's the most expensive Android tablet on the market. The plastic back looks plastic. The screen is smaller on a body equally sized as the two tablets I owned previously and is only 1080p. It has a complicated root process (and took over a month to do without disabling necessary DRM) which discourages all but the committed from rooting and customization. There are not many custom cases for it (I miss the roocase origami from my samsungs). The LTE version's phone capability means t-mobile US users can't get free data for life.
That's all the bad. Here's the good:
It's waterproof... so you can read a book in the bath tub.
The back of the tablet isn't slippery
It's the lightest tablet of it's screen size.
It is the second thinnest Android tablet.
It is a rare android tablet that offers 32GB + microSD option
The screen is as good as LCDs gets (LCDs are better for bright colors and AMOLED better for darks)
The speakers are placed well and produce good sound.
The battery life is the best of any 2014 tablet.
Sony updated it to Android 5.0 before Samsung and Dell... also their updating process means it will be updated at the same time as flagships.
The official case looks good and works fine.
Out of the box, sony gives sound and display customizations (and audio/picture apps) that others copy.
Snapdragon 801 means compatibility as it was the 2014 universal processor.
