Installing Nexus system images on any device? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Theoretically, what would happen if I tried to flash a Nexus 9 5.1.1 image to my Apex TM785CH tablet with Kitkat? I'm 99% sure it would brick although it might just work. If this is not possible, is there any way to get 5.1.1 on my device? Are there any universal Lollipop images? The manufacturer has not released any updates for the device.
Thanks

You would brick. Each device has to have a kernel built just for that device. You could try and make an Aosp based rom if you had kernel source for the device.

That may be the best option, however I wouldn't know where to start with making a rom. I don't know if this information is worth anything:
Settings -> About Tablet
Model: TM785CH
Android Version: 4.4.2
IFWI Version: F9.EE
Kernel Version: 3.10.20, Mon, June 16 15:15:25 CST 2014
Build Number: V1.00_20140616

Your best bet would be to find out if the OEM released the kernel source. Just hope the device is not a Chinese device.

Just contacted the manufacturer TMAX Digital (Apex Digital). If I recall correctly they are based in California. Hopefully they can provide the kernel source or even a legitimate update since there is absolutely no information on the internet about this device.

Everything I have found leads me to think the cali address is there just for show. It seems to be imports from China.

So their customer service responded and basically said that the device hardware is only compatible with Android 4.4 and there will be no future updates.
I think this is the end of the road as nobody makes custom roms for this device.

[Q] Stock Apps Help

IDK if anyone has had this issue before, but I purchased a GT-I9300 and it is missing all the samsung apps (all the S-Apps and other things that make the S3 the S3). I called Samsung and told them what happened, and they wanted to shaft me with $50. Anybody got any idea what I can do for this? Everything else works fine. I am going to try saywhatt's apps to see if I can get all the stuff I am missing on the phone in. Just in case anyone else has an idea as to what to do in my case.
Thanks in advance :cyclops:

You can also flash a Stock rom via Odin. But first check if your phone is the real deal. Like "JJEgan" said Go to setting > About Device... and let us know what Model Number, Android Version, Baseband, Kernel, and Firmware you have.

Like I said before, tried googling & I'm double checking that I am taking the correct steps to put the right stuff on there on here. I'm currently trying to fish out the .apk's I may need to install but I need to look through the manual to see what I am missing. I previously had a G2X which I managed to get to CM 10 thanks to the wizards here, but I just got this phone, and it seems to be running ICS. It just doesn't have as many apps as it should out of the box.
Another thing I think may be worthy of noting is that it has "Samsung Apps" in the home screen but it says it does not install.
Thanks again for the swift responses.

This is knock off device and not a real S3 The reason they are not there is that most likely the device doesnt have the hardware to support it. Thos device normally come with around 500 mb of ram and that is not even close to enough to run the samsung apps. Mix in that 4.1.9 is not an official build of android so you most likely will have issues with google based apps.

Once Samsung gets it they will return it to you unaltered. The min they see it is a knock off device they will refuse to do anything with it.
As for the IMEI that is easily faked and knock offs are known to use copied IMEI numbers to fool the buyers into thinking it is legit. If I were you I would toss it on Ebay and get another device.
Too many people looking for a cheap high end device and they end up with a POS that is equal to a toaster. Please make sure you know what you are buying before you buy it. You will find almost no help/support/or anything for those devices anywhere.

Root/Best Rom for Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 4G

Hello
Today I received the LTE version of the Redmi Note 2. It has bloatware installed and I would like to remove this,
Is there any better roms for the 4G LTE version? or can I root the stock rom and remove these apps
I am on version 86.7.3.0 Stable
Cheers
Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 doesn't have a non-LTE and an LTE version. It is LTE.
Download latest Rom from Xiaomi.eu and search for Hermes-titled file

In my opinion, MIUI (sadly) isn't the best ROM for this device... I'm using CyanEcch (CM 12.1) at the moment, and am pretty satisfied with it, the battery seems to last a little longer. Still waiting for an optimized kernel, though

I'm afraid you'll be waiting for a long time, as we need the kernel source codes first. Xiaomi doesn't seem to be excited about supporting developers in this way, unfortunately.

I don't think Xiaomi's to blame for that... Mediatek says "I'll deliver an awesome CPU for a really low price", and Xiaomi accepts, although the fine print says Mediatek retains all sources and control over the kernel. The only way out of this deadend would be for Xiaomi to "demand" sources to be delivered, even if only to them, in order to make their own devices better, cancelling any and all present and future contracts if otherwise.
Either way, I'm oldschool, I still (want to) believe sources will be leaked somehow, and the general public will (deservingly) get a perfected ROM and kernel for the device they purchased, independently of eventual legal terms.

I thought we had already tried to port known kernel sources from other MediaTek devices like the HTC One M9+ and others that had already had their kernels released? Maybe that was some other code, I'm not sure.
I've heard the faintest of rumors that some people already have the kernel source codes and are not releasing them for fear of prosecution, although I can't confirm them or even say I'm convinced myself.

To root and flashing rom you can referred to post #11 of this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-2/help/redmi-note-2-downgrade-upgrade-problem-t3243079
1) tried used this to root: http://en.miui.com/thread-152550-1-1.html?mobile=2 if failed then used the below method.
2) Windroid was an easy way to root rmn2: http://en.miui.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=167882&extra=pag
For flashing any rom to your existing unofficial rom, you need to full wiped, so used the miui system backup to backup you data. It will make you newly flashed rom stable.

What I read somewhere around here was that some sources were leaked, but they were incomplete. However, this being the mighty anonymous internet, I think anyone would be able to upload a kernel (or even the source) somewhere anonymously, even if through proxies.
Uh.. hi there, I'm using a Redmi note 2. Not planning on changing phones soon... but I kinda deleted my ROM in the bid to factory reset my phone. Now it won't come on. I'm seeing new updated ROMs for the TWRP (Team Win Recovery Project)… but I just want my phone the way it was. I've searched almost the entire Redmi note 2 databases and related searches, but can't seem to find the Original ROM or OS that came with the phone. URGENT HELP needed!
Thanks, Peter.

It does say any phone read the second paragraph
"Flashing an Android image is super easy, especially on a Nexus device. You can use this tutorial for installing the image on your Nexus or for flashing any other image on any other phone."
Yes, but not the Nexus imgs on any other phone. They have to be specific to the phone. Also, that's still not even close to correct. Most manufacturers have their own way to restore or update the phone and many use different formats that are not compatible with other types of phones. Samsung does not even have a fastboot mode, so obviously there would be no way to use that guide or anything similar to do that.

While it does say flashing an Android image is easy, that applies mostly to Nexus devices. For other devices like Sony, Samsung etc they have a specific version of Android that must be flashed with the brand of phone to make it work. For example:
Samsung - TouchWiz
HTC - Sense
Xiaomi - MIUI

That's the reason why ROM ports exist. Using the manufacturer ROM as a base ROM you're able to port ROMs from different manufacturers to your device provided you know how and what you're doing.

AOSP ports are not built upon manufacturer roms. They use vendor blobs, but that's it.

No this is not true. Each device needs a kernel built by the OEM for the device.
The nexus devices use a majority of opensource software as to where the s4 doesnt.
The best you will find is a buggy port in about 6 months or so and that is even if someone can hack together a working kernel.

mmb29p images for ROMs

Here are the bootloader/radio/vendor images for mmb29p AKA 6.0.1_r8
This is all you want if your running a ROM. If your running stock, you will want to get the images directly from Google. If your not sure, ask your ROM's dev team.
http://www.emccann.net/dho/9-Experimental-physics-lab/angler/angler-mmb29p-images.zip
If your not sure how to flash them:
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=How+to+flash+bootimages+on+android
Bootloader and radio are same as in mmb29m.
EDIT: Vendor is same too..
So I asked in another thread, but what are the steps to update from an unlocked bootloader and rooted mmb29m to mmb29p?
Since this build have the same radio as the last one, this wouldn't fix the LTE acquisition?

According to various websites no bug fixes, enhancements and/or extras have been added. It's purely security vulnerabilities fixed in this update.

The consensus is that the problem lies within the ROM, not the radio. Combine that with the post above, I'd say "no". However, two people have confirmed in another thread that with the new ROM, LTE does acquire after boot (after a two-minute wait).

Nope again. I am certain that there are plenty of unidentified and unresolved vulnerabilities in Android (and Chrome too for that matter). When a product becomes sufficiently complex and feature-rich, its zero-days are unfortunately bound to track.
Imagine all the pre-Lollipop devices out there being unpatched.....
I was under the impression that with root and an unlocked bootloader I wouldn't get these ota's but I received a notification for the January security update this morning. I'm just stock 6.0.1 with xposed.
So now I can't remove the notification from my status bar. Is there no other way to update than using fastboot from a computer?

You cannot flash an OTA once you flash a recovery, but it has nothing to do with notifications.
To remove notification just long press on it, hit app info, then remove notifications.

any news from lineahe os rom for vs985 other lg g3 have this rom
I would look in the Original Development forum for any news possibly if it ever comes to the VZ985. From the Lineage OS web site, it only lists the D855, so until they update that page, or if someone else downloads the source and ports it to the VS985, I doubt we'll see it, especially since this is over 2 years old and most developers have probably moved on to bigger and better things.
And just because other versions of a phone have it, doesn't mean it will be available for all versions. It all depends on which versions of the phone the developers have.

I unfortunately can't help you there. First, I no longer have my G3 as it died back in December. Sad day.
Secondly, I ran stock, unrooted and I was able to get about 1.5 days on a full charge, as long as I didn't play my games. lol

As it is an initial release, there might be some bugs, but as far as I know, I haven't found out any, but battery optimisation is not so good and the phone heats up. And I think many features are missing, because the file size of lineageos for d855 is around 390mb and that of vs985 is only around 350 mb.
I hope they'll add all of the features in future updates.
Also, if you were using substratum, you cannot use it in this rom very well because this is not a substratum (masquerade) enabled rom. I reverted back to Resurrection remix today.
Ive been running it since yesterday. some issues:
I can onlyget root through ADB, despite flashing the Super SU twice. They are aware of this issue
I couldnt' get Gapps to install correctly. That may be due to the fact that I tried to use The Aroma package. I'm not familiar with that one.
You cannot turn on developer options, tapping the build number 8 times only brings you to the home screen and a large logo that wont' go away until restart.
It's very early for this release and it looks good so far. I''ll be back, but I just bought this device (for development/learning purposes) and I want to try some more roms
Thanks for the heads up about early issues on LineageOS. When I saw they had a version for the VS985 I figured it might be worth some risk to check it out. Unfortunately (or fortunately) I couldn't get it to flash.
