Tasker Question- Is this possible? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone, thanks for taking the time to read this. I'll start by giving some back story so you can see what I'm trying to do and why.
I work in car sales and one of the things the manufacturer requires us to do is log into their app 5 times a month. (the app is GM Dealer Sales Assistant). This isn't an app that remembers username and password and it's a pain in the butt to do this and I'm wondering if a tasker profile can be made that would log into this automatically for me so that I don't have to. I've messed around with tasker a little bit but I'm not very well versed in it. I appreciate any insight or other ideas on how to achieve this., thanks.

is that at least 5 times a month?
do you need to do anything within the app once it's open, or just literally open it and thats it?

Yes at least 5 times a month, more shinny hurt. It's unclear if anything needs done in the app, I usually do something in the app just to be on the safe side, by there's a way to track your progress and see if you've met the requirement before the end of the month.

[MOD] VZW 3g hotspot app for froyo leak

How to use the 3g hotspot app for free
I looked and looked and didnt find this anywhere except for eclair and just got done doing mine a little bit ago as the steps are different now.
You used to be able to select dial up mode in wireless settings but now if you have the new froyo leak. Now you dial **usbui and change usb mode to modem. Plug in to pc fire up qpst add port once you see phone select start clients/service programming. next click read from phone, password should be typed in already as 000000. scroll over to m.ip and select the active profile, should be profile 0 and change tethered nai to [email protected] the phone will reboot and your good to go start tethering with apmode. Some may choose to reenter the usb modem settings and change it back to pda(the first step) but i do not see it as neccessary. If this has been posted by someone else already feel free to delete and if in wrong catagory feel free to move.
Just remember these steps are for FROYO leak anly not for eclair users although they may work for that also just dont have an eclair phone to test on.
I have done this for a long time and never encoured any charges although i am not liable for any problems you may come across, ive never had any. As long as your not seeing the verizon webpage when you access web via your phone then your set.
Any questions feel free to ask but i may just tell you to google it.

There is supposedly monitoring built into dl30 that allows verizon to track tethering
..that's why theres the warning in the original leak

Why can't that file just be removed from the ROM? Would it cause the rom to just not work at all?
Forgive me for probably not using the correct terminology but does the mobile hotspot app handle tethering the same as say the wifi tether app? I just wonder if one sets off the flag to verizon where the other wouldn't.

It will break wifi if you remove the module. It ties into dhd.ko, the wifi driver.
Play nice everybody
Just got off the phone with Verizon. Been using the 3g hotspots for several days now tethered more then a gig so and I called and just asked if I was being billed for the hotspots app and they said there is nothing on my account about it that I've never had it and I would never be charged for it unless I actually signed up by changing my plan. So I'm gonna keep using mine. If anything changes I will let everyone know but I personally believe it is safe to use. I think that moniters for when you hit the 5 gig mark on your data then they start to throttle it. But this is just my opinion. But I think its a good one.;-)
Not to mention I've been using it for a pretty long while on eclair before froyo.
In fact I'm tethering right now to my gtab.
I have a couple problems with that.
First, if you admitted it, your account was likely flagged.
Second, VZW reps change their stories each time you call.
The monitor wasn't in place on eclair.

Does the same thing hold true if you wanted to use WiFi Tether for Root Users? Maybe this has already been answered, but I'm just looking for confirmation. TIA...
We don't know.

If it's any consolation, VZW doesn't have a flagging system, at least not one the frontline reps can access, so mentioning it on a call won't flag you. And the reason the stories change each time you call is because you might get a guy that's adept at what he does on the first call, then the next call you might get an outsourced moron from AFNI, and the next time get a person taking their first week of calls....
When you call, they are going to the features list, and looking for the feature called "Mobile Broadband Hotspot 2GB $20". Upon seeing it is not there, that is what they tell you.
What you NEED is a tech rep (like myself) to go into the back-side of the billing system or the switch, and check your records there. The switch will tell me if something is 'off' about your data, like if a rate limit has been added. The billing system will tell me if there are DUN (dial up networking) connections being reported. But, in all likelihood, the groups doing any kind of monitoring are **NOT** the folks taking your calls. They work in the switches or corporate, and their goings-on are a mystery to us that do take your calls. So, they could be minutely tracking each byte and I, as a tenured Tech rep, wouldn't have the foggiest idea what they were doing.
Just to share with you how 'in the loop' we in the call centers are kept, I had an engineer call me last week complaining that his test device couldn't authenticate phone calls. I asked for the number, and it pulls up a device listed as "Test Device 7". I asked for the make/model of the phone, and he tells me, "I can't tell you that, it's unreleased and classified". I then tell him, without even a brand, I can't create a new authentication key and give him steps to program it into the phone. He still wouldn't tell me anything, so I told him to seek help with the person that gave him the top secret phone and hope they can do my job too.
if the op wants to disregard the warnings and tether...then by all means tether...but theres a reason monitoring was put into froyo...and i cant imagine it was for our benefit...so meh

I didnt admit it i told them a family member had my phone and when i got it back the hotspot app was on my homescreen and wasnt for sure what they did with it. Besides even if they do charge me which i doubt they will its only gonna be 30 bucks. I can handle that to let everyone else know what really happens. But its just like people worryjng about sending back rooted phones with changes for warrenty replacements. I just wipe my numbers out and send it rooted boot animation changed everything even a custom rom and theme one time. They dont pay attention to the phones. They get them plug them in and flash them to stock. Just mt two cents. When i recieve my feb bill ill let you know whether or not i get charged anythjng for tethering.

Stolen phone - PLEASE HELP!

My phone was stolen in Chicago, I currently live in NYC. Basically the person who stole my phone accidently uploaded her images to my facebook mobile account. I have an Android Vibrant phone rooted with Teamwhiskeys Rom. I was wondering if there was a way I could get in touch with the phone. Tmobile and the chicago police cannot do anything for me but, Android Market can still send Apps from the Browser to the phone itself. I can download apps straight to the phone right now.
I need a GPS / text service app or some way to message the person.
Can you guys help me out?
Thank you.
Installing software to it won't help, as you can't then run the software. Even remote installing something like WaveSecure to it won't help, because you can't set it up remotely.
Plus, why do you think the thief cares about you trying to contact them? Your phone is gone, dude. Replace it, and next time install some security software right away.
well I did buy a new phone, I'm just pissed that the person uploaded photos to my account. So now I'm installing about 1000 apps on the phone via Market. Hoping it downloads, freezing her phone, and making her wipe it... not knowing that my phone needs odin to go back to stock. If I cant have my phone, no one can..
and there are some apps that can help... Check out Plan B
Well an obvious way to message the person would be to send yourself a text message. There are many websites that allow you to do that.
Sympathy
Dude, my heart goes out to you.. I always think about the possibility of my phone getting into the wrong hands. I'm sorry I can't help you except by saying..so sorry.. However you have helped me in rethinking putting some type of security software on my phone. Something to locate the phone as well as destroy personal info. Sorry, but thanks..
Try to install the app "Plan B" from market.android.com

Hope that the old saying comes true and what comes around goes around and bites her in the rear end for you!!
Sorry to hear about your phone. Since I've rooted my phone I hadn't given much thought to security, but after reading your post I'm going to the market right now.
EVO 4G-VirusROM RC 6-Launcher Pro
yup maybe plan B also those facebook picture should have an isp tag and could be tracked
That sucks dude. Definitely try the remote wipe thing.
Going to be getting the app to remote wipe my phone for sure.
I think some phones when they take pictures have the location embedded somehow.
If she took a picture of herself or friends post it on a blog and ask people to identify her.
Other thing to do is just text her.
I haven't seen an app on the droid market quite as good as SmartProtect that I used to use on my HD2 with WinMo. Basically you registered your SIM and after it is stollen and someone puts in their own sim it would then txt GPS coords to a number or several numbers of your choosing. It would also send you the new # and had many remote control options that could be sent via special SMS commands. Along with all of this you could also have it wipe contacts and/or directories on your SD. If anyone knows of something similar I am all ears after reading this thread.. it can happen. On a side note watch this video.. its awesome! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U4oB28ksiIo
Thanks everyone, I appreciate all of you responding. I was thinking of getting 4chan to make her a internet sensation but decided to cut my loses and just wait for good ol karma to kick in.
I did learn a good lesson out of this, protect your phone, get good security software and please, keep your phone safe in your pocket while you are severely drunk.
<3 you all.
Merph

Well, if she uploaded HER pictures to YOUR account. Just send those pictures to the cops or spread it across the internet.
Spread your IMEI number on various marketplaces across the net, not sure if the facility is available in the US, but here if we tell the cops that our phone is stolen they block the IMEI no. because of which that phone is just a brick, so your loss, but at least it's not the thieves gain !
And yes, next time if the phone is expensive and you have shady characters around you do consider insurance and security apps as suggested by everyone else.

I think I remember something about sprint family tracker. You could check that out, but I think your gps has to have been on.
Depending on how smart the person that picked it up is, you may be able to install a tracking app from the Market from your computer and find it(as long as they haven't logged out of your account). You may be surprised. I would retrace my steps and see if anyone turned it in. Since it is a Saturday night I would assume that most likely you left it at a restaurant or bar. I would go back to each one of them(once they open) and see if someone turned it in. If not, you will have to report it stolen and get a new one through TEP if you have it. I always, ALWAYS carry TEP on my phones. It's a lot easier to come up with $100 deductible then to come up with $600 to buy one outright.
Ok. I'm sober now drinking my coffee.
I had a beer pong table set out on my lawn (I own a lot of land and am going to be combing it today) but I know its not there. I got in the car with somebody to get cigs (with baggy sweat pants on) at the local convenient store. I went back to the store (piss drunk) and asked the two girls if they've seen it and nada ****ING thing (its not in either of the two vehicles either)
I've called and texted my phone a million times (I have to slow down or my battery will die). I do have the $100 dollar insurance but am bummed out about the new hboot.
What's the name of the app that tracks it and how do I install it to my phone from either my tabs or PC?
Thanks guys.
Edit... I just read what I wrote..... I may still be a little drunk. Hiccup. Hope that all made sense.

The name of the app is Plan B. It's by the same company as Lookout.
Here's what it says on their website: "Lookout has an app called Plan B which can locate your phone after you've lost it. The phone needs to be powered on and have a network and data connection. Just go to the online Android Market (http://market.android.com), log into your Android Market account, and install the app to your missing phone. If you are able to install the app and it runs, you will begin to get emails to the Gmail account that you have registered with the Android market with location information."
I also read after you install it, you have to send a text that says "locate." I've even read where someone didn't start getting the emails til the next day. The phone had died, but then the person who had it recharged it!
Oh, yeah. After you install the app to your phone, install Lookout to your tablet, just in case. Not only can you do the locate thing, but Lookout also examines any app you download for malware.
Hope this helps. Keep us posted.

You can log into the market from your computer and have it install plan b on your phone remotely . The phone of course has to be on and your gmail account still linked on the phone. Plan b is for when you have already lost your phone and didn't have a tracking app installed. I just installed the sprint tep app that does the same thing as lookout for for free(I'm guessing you need to have tep for it to work?) That won't help now(plan b is your best shot) but it will help in the future if you ever misplace your phone

someone suggest a good app for this

basically my mother has developed a extremely terrible seizure disorder and needs eyes and ears on her even when she is just setting in the living room watching television. My father is there to be those eyes and ears but since that consumes most of his time he no longer gets to go to his upstairs workroom and build his radio controlled quadcopters which seems to be the only hobby he still has or enjoys so to speak. I'm looking to get some suggestions on a good app to view the camera of one android phone from another android phone so that either while he is up in the room he has the ability to see and hear her aeither at the touch of a button or widget. I'm searching for something somewhat parent friendly to set up (not to complicated) as all I can do is call and give him the name of it. if anyone has any suggestions on something that might fit the description of this situation please leave a reply with your opinion. thanks for anyone's time, Robert

I very much appreciate your reply as I feel this all I can do to help my parents out in there current situation. I am really hoping that the app works without a wifi network because they also do not have Internet from there ISP, they only have basic cable. I very much thank you for your reply and I'll definitely call my dad and tell him to try that app out. Thank you once again.
I told my father about the app and he attempted to set it up but said it wouldn't work without the licence, atleast on one of his phones. does anyone know of a similar app that might be easy to set up and doesn't require wifi home network? it can be paid or free, he just can't do in app purchases on his setup, but he can buy them outright if they happen to be paid and not free. thanks

Cerberus Anti-Theft

Hey all, I know this doesn't have much to do with our lgogs in particular, but I just stumbled upon this app (after hearing a lot of horror stories about near thefts), and after trying it a few times I can safely say it's amazing. It can find your phone (even turn gps on if it's off), set off an alarm, take a picture of a thief, etc. Here's the play store link:

I swear it's not my app and I'm not getting paid to talk it up (so I'm not taking any credit), just trying to save you guys some possible future pain!
