New Sony waterproof terms - Sony Xperia M4 Aqua

The Xperia M4 Aqua is waterproof and protected against dust, so don’t worry if you get caught in the rain or want to wash off dirt under a tap, but remember: all ports and attached covers should be firmly closed. You should not: put the device completely underwater; or expose it to seawater, salt water, chlorinated water or liquids such as drinks. Abuse and improper use of device will invalidate warranty. The device has Ingress Protection rating IP65/68. For more info seewww.sonymobile.com/waterproof. Note the Xperia has a capless USB port to connect and charge. The USB port needs to be completely dry before charging

I mean the new terms of using waterproof phone is only for Xperia Z5. But i read is too for other phones!
Before changint terms, on M4 Aqua was when phone go exposed to chlorinated water, drinks or other liquids, we must expose/clean it to/with normal water.
It mean i cant now expose phone under water and maybe take photos with it? (When i do it and phone stop work -> lost warranty)
It mean Sony phones are waterproof only when spill phone..
(Cant put underwater..)
But.. When i dont break the phone (as it will not waterproof), it can be waterproof to 4ever?
At the end, IP68 mean unlimited time under water,no? It break phone when it will 30,5minutes and 1.55m underwater?(ex.)
I think, some shops does not recognize warranty and ex. the phone was underwater 0.5meters and 5minutes and stopped working..
And its any way spontaneously open the caps? I have bad dreams about it..

Underwater test nessesary?

I just bought a Z2. Very happy with it. But do I need to test it underwater?
Did any of you do that?
I did, day I got it filled the sink with water and in it went

I still haven't yet lol love the phone would love trying underwater photography but if it goes wrong lol...
Sent from my D6503 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Right when I turned it on and configured the settings, I dunked it in a sink full of water. Next day, tried it in a swimming pool.
Well, maybe need to try it then
I did with my white one, worked great. My black one died and I'm still fighting for a refund... Check the screen gaps very closely and give it a whirl.
The way I look at the whole water resistance thing with my Z2 is, if I get caught on the phone in the rain I won't worry about it, thats as far as my testing water resistance will ever go
I use it as a party trick but or if uninformed people are around i go out of my way without saying a word to them is turn on tap and wait a few seconds as they will generally look up from whatever they were doing and then i proceed to slowly "clean it" under the tap, I get all sort of response thes main ones being *gasps* or "are you crazy wtf." then explain it and show its working right after. If you want to make sure your covered by warranty take video of you firmly pressing the flaps down before proceeding with the above cause in the water proof booklet or chapter (cant rember what it which it was) it says if any dust or water is found beneath the flaps the warranty is void. which in my mind translates to even if the flaps seal was broken or faulty from the start you are officially screwed
This is what happened to me
I also bought My new Xperia Z2 from Saudi Arabia. It was w20 model had screen gaps issue both on front and back . Bought it from Sony store and they said that it will not effect waterproofness of the device. Even then i was careful but after a month it was full of finger prints and i decided to wash it and unfortunately water went inside . All flaps were closed and i double checked it . When i took it to service center they said no warranty if water went inside and they will send it to Dubai please check back after 2 weeks.
I posted on Facebook as they may help me but this was their reply was we are sorry and nothing else
On twitter they are not even replying. and they just say contact service center and all i hear from them is excuses. there is not a single scrtach on my device. Unfortunately there is no refund or replacement system here. Really disappointed with Sony services. I saved money for 6 months for this device

Fezan, I can understand that you were saving for it quite a long time but if you did, why did you risk and put it into water?
The problem is, that Sony advertises this phone as IP58 resistant BUT the warranty does not work if water gets inside the phone... They secured themselves...
I understand your frustration though, you just put it under the tap water and saw what happens. Unfortunately you should have done it in Sony store where a representative would check for waterproofnes of the phone, if you do it by yourself, they will hardly ever warrant it.
Even though this phone is supposed to be water proof, I do not intend to test this waterproofness, ever! Not intentionally, at least...

Well You can say its foolish of me to do so. but its one of the main selling feature of Xperia Z line phones and tablet. Imagine if you bought iPhone 5s and fingerprint scanner is completely not working or if phone was advertised with retina display but had lower resolution screen. I know i had a faulty unit but sony support should take that into consideration

Let's say they agree to do it, would not be in the store but service center, how long would it take for the phone to show there was a problem ?

Just got a Z2 today. Used Z1 all the time in the shower and dipped it in water quite a few times. Not a single problem. Probably not going to try it out on the Z2 lol.
I used it in the pool and in the sea.

You have water test markers - you can see them if you open flaps.
If those markers become red, you haven't closed flaps right and your warranty won't be accepted.
But!!!
If those stickers are still white - it's not your mistake and Sony MUST accept warranty.
This device is waterproof and water resistant and you can go diving with it...
Will you do that or not, that's your thing but you have every right to do that.
Only, don't go to sea with it - dive in pool or lake
Salt could cause short-circuit and you'll not have your warranty rights...

Well, I guess you are right but what IF you closed the flaps correctly and one of the seals was bad and the water got inside anyway and marked the marker? This can happen too.
Waterproofness was not the main selling point for me, anyway, I would not risk submerging a 600 Euro worth of a device which was designed to be a phone not a completely waterproof camera
Anyway, I wish you good luck with Sony when going through the warranty process, I hope everything goes fine...

I am not saying you are foolish, maybe it is just me but I am very cautious with my electronics and I don't think I would risk submerging this phone into water. If it was a camera or a device specifically designed to be used under water then sure, why not.
By designed to be used in water I mean something that is well sealed and does not rely on some flaps, which deteriorate proportionally to the number of times you open them etc. I accept the fact that this phone is said to be waterproof but I bought it to be used as a phone and there is just too many catches in the warranty print and too many other things can go wrong.
@valdigre
Totally agree...
I don't need Z2 in swimming pool as well but if I'm not sure for waterproof I would take my device and one bucket with water and do test in the store or service center

A few days after getting mine I took it to a water park and kept it in the pools and down the water slides and all with no problems... Even sat in a hot tub for 20 minutes. Very happy with this device.

Despite the unwise adverts of Sony I tend to see this -water resistance- as a safeguard against accidental water damage. This is NOT an industrial designed device meant for the work place, the Z2 is very much a domestic mobile and I tend to avoid contact with water. I am confident the Z2 is water resistant to the given specifications and feel comfortable using it in the rain etc.
I sincerely think those who take any mobile into the shower ....................well enough said, I shower to wash I cant see why one needs to do such a thing. We all need our personal space and if one cant shower in peace I think its time to revise our daily work patters.
Sea water is a big no no because of the salt as are swimming pools due to chemicals. These facts are mentioned in the manual.
I don't 'drop test' my devices either. I really don't need to confirm what I already know.

[Q] Ultra ruined.

Hi Everyone,
So I was on holiday with my beloved Ultra, and using it in the pool. Cool thing is, this phone is waterproof! That's what I thought until I got on the plane a few hours later and upon trying to use my phablet the touch screen stopped responding. It seemed to function OK, I just couldn't unlock it or use it as there was some kind of hyperactive spectre flying around inside making it seem like the touchscreen was possessed. I looked a little closer, and not only was there condensation visible in both camera lenses, but upon opening the usb cover there was also moisture inside there. I opened the other side, and the moisture indicator was still white, so I think the problem was specifically with the usb port cover.
Anyway, it's not covered under any kind of warranty as I bought it overseas, and I have taken it to a repair shop who confirmed that it's water damaged and that they would need to fix the damaged USB port and replace the screen to make it work again. I just want to buy a new one as it would be cheaper than getting it fixed, but I have some data/apps on the old one I don't want to lose. Any suggestions on the best approach? If the shop can read the eMMC and back it up, could I use that to restore data/apps onto a new phone, or am I better off just getting it fixed...
Advice/opinions appreciated.
it's a marketing trick. they are not actually waterproof.
I guess this guy's luck was bad. Mine had contact with water a couple of times and thankfully it lived upto its waterproofness promise

This is a stupid reply. I brought it with me in the pool with my kids, made photos and videos underwater (touch block + volume rocker), no problems at all.
Same goes with my wife's Z.
Of course, if you go swimming with the USB flap open, well, you're an idiot. (Not that I accuse OP of being one, just that 80% of the time when I saw someone with a faulty phone/laptop/tablet it was not working because of THEM).

Hopefully someone replies with some advice that is actually helpful... FYI I have used it in the pool (and had it underwater) multiple times before without problems. I always make sure the seals are sitting properly when I close them so I am doubtful it was user error...
The usb port is fully brpken?
I think it's corroded, but definitey doesn't work.

good for you, you were lucky. on the xperia forums and on here, there are many MANY people who had their phones damaged from water. Are ALL of them at fault?
however, call sony and ask them (i did):
1) what *guarantee* is there that with the flaps closed the phone will not receive water damage? they will answer none. There is no case where the warranty will cover water damage. Whether it's your fault or the phone's fault, it is irrelevant to sony. they will NOT cover it.
2) what happens if, after *normal use*... notice this: *normal use*, NOT abuse, the flaps lose their sealing ability? Does the warranty cover it? No. Warranty does NOT cover "normal use wear". Which means the flaps WILL lose their sealing ability and you end up with a non-waterproof phone. How soon? NOONE KNOWS because there is no way to actually TEST it, at least not as a USER. You MIGHT be able to have it tested at sony... but that would mean testing it every. single. time. you close any of the flaps...
your phone, at any given point, MAY or MAY NOT be waterproof. However, since you have no way to test it, it means that you CAN NOT TRUST it to be waterproof, which is, of course, means you have to treat it as NOT waterproof.
which, in the end, means the phone is not waterproof.
as a sidenote, keep any and all profanities to yourself
Blah blah. The phone is waterproof. No need to be all technical and stuff. Can it be used in water for a certain period of time? Yes.
Your post reminds me of when ships were first being built. If a boat ends up sinking from wear and tear does that mean it wasn't a floating device? Also wear and tear....that's why we check our cars at a set time for periodic maintenance because of wear and tear.
I got lax with mine and took it in the shower and got water in it, USB flap is worn. Not the companies, because I didn't take the necessary steps to make sure my phone was periodically maintained.
Just my 2 cents...

[Q] Buying Xperia Z2 (D6502) motherboard India??

Guys i got my Xperia Z2 water damaged in sea water. The estimated cost for repair by Sony Service Center is around 33,000 INR (rs), which is around the cost of new phone. So i am thinking to get the phone repaird myself.
Can anybody help me with where can i buy the motherboard in India?
I searched alot on the Internet but couldn't find one.
please help me
Yep I learned the hardway that waterproof doesn't cover seawater. Lucky for me my Z2 is more or less use able. My front facing camera, vibration and speakers are on the fritz though.
Anyway to answer your question have u tried looking for a damaged Z2?
What did no one read this part of the manual..
To ensure the water resistance of your device, all covers, including the covers for the micro USB port, the SIM card slot, and the memory card slot, must be firmly closed. Your smart device is waterproof and dust-resistant in compliance with the Ingress Protection (IP) ratings IP65 and IP68, as explained in the table below. To view more specific IP information about your device, go to www.sonymobile.com/global-en/legal/ testresults/ and click on the relevant device name. These specific IP ratings mean that your device is dust-resistant and is protected against low-pressure water streams as well as against the effects of immersion for 30 minutes in fresh (non-saline) water up to 1.5 meters deep. You can use your device: • in dusty environments, for example, on a windy beach. • when your fingers are wet. • in some extreme weather conditions, for example, when it’s snowing or raining. • in fresh (non-saline) water depths of 1.5 meters or less, for example, in a fresh water lake or river. • in a chlorinated swimming pool. Even if your device is resistant to dust and water, you should avoid exposing it unnecessarily to environments with excessive dust, sand, and mud or to moist environments with extreme high or low temperatures. The waterproof characteristic of the micro USB port, the SIM card slot, the memory card slot, and the headset jack cannot be guaranteed in all environments or conditions. Never immerse your device in salt water or let the micro USB port or headset jack come into contact with salt water. For example, if you’re at the beach, remember to keep your device away from the sea water. Also, never expose the device to any liquid chemicals. For example, if you’re washing dishes by hand using liquid detergent, avoid bringing your device into contact with the detergent. After exposure to non-fresh water, rinse your device using fresh water.

Go to ebay.com not ebay.in and search for parts.. You can get it imported which might cost you a bit more and if you've the tools to repair it which i highly doubt, you can fix it. I also know for a fact that if you open your device with a normal mobile service shopkeeper's tools, your phone won't be waterproof anymore. Only OEMs have those kinds of hardware. I suggest you to buy a used z2 or just buy a new phone if you;re willing to spend money, Z3 maybe..
I ebay.In u can buy new one around 20000

[DISCUSSIONS] Why Does The Lens on Z2 always moist up?

So let's start the discussions with Hi . Im pretty sure many of the Z2 here love to take pictures underwater. But some of the models give moisture on the lens and the PHONE IS 100% IN PERFECT CONDITION. after the action underwater. So why does this happens even when the phone on normal temperature before dipping it under water(Tap water for example). Can anyone explain?
Z2 ended up being shipped with ALOT of faulty units so water resistancy is hit and miss for this device
Not so much with other xperias but it still can happen due to sony finding out that the company who tested water resistancy didnt do it properly
(Aka dipping it in a tank of water and leaving it)

Not really waterproof.

Hi,
Well, I drop my phone while doing my dishes. I put it like 2 or 3 times in the water since 6 months.
Before going to sleep I shut it down because it was going crazy thinking a headset is connected/disconnected due to the water in the connector.
Then this morning, impossible to power it on. Water behind the camera glass.
It looks like water entered from the trap (that I opened only 2 times...), the water test sticker is now orange.
I have to admit I'm little disappointed, I put my Z far more times in the water without any problem, and this one who benefits years of R&D, died after 2 showers.
I suppose Sony don't care of this issue in the guaranty ?
You can try, but if i remember right they have stated that if water has entered inside phine then user has left flap/flaps open
You shouldn't have opened that flap at all but let the phone dry. The headset connected/disconnected problem is somehow normal and it goes away after some drying. It happened to me too and I let the phone for a few tens of minutes, with the socket facing the exhaust of the laptop fan (while giving the laptop some numbers to crunch).
Why would you put it in water? Sounds like a case for karma.

The device is certified waterproof for fresh (and pure) water only. Substances such as soap or harsh chemicals can damage or remove waterproof adhesives.
There is also the possibility that you have been unlucky.
That's why Sony phones are no longer waterPROOF: people always put the phone through various situations and then say something like "but it says it is waterproof!".
I washed mine in the sink under running tap water. It came out just fine. Washed it because my kid spilled soda on it.
They are WaterPROOF
I had the Z3 Compact about a year ago and that was waterproof. I put it under water many times, I got soaked in the rain completely with my new Z5 Compact and it is fine. I also used it in a swimming pool with no problem what so ever.
Also to prove they are waterPROOF,
"IP 68 Enclosures - IP rated as "dust tight" and protected against complete, continuous submersion in water."
Continuous submersion, so continuously going under water.
If your Z5C broke then it's most likely because of the three factors:
Faulty Phone
Open flaps
Left in water too long
That's all I can think of anyway
Peace
