is the phone TOO big? - LG V10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Don't get me wrong, I knew what I was getting into.......but I find myself wondering if I'm alone in thinking the phone is just too large.
-Like if it's in my pocket and I sit down to tie my shoes, the thing feels like it's under tremendous stress.....like I have an ipad in my front pocket.
-It's damn near impossible reach the pull down the notifications bar....and completely impossible to use the second screen when using one hand.
Starting to wonder if the 5 inch screen is really the sweetspot for the average sized hand.

Coming from the Galaxy Note 3, the size doesn't feel too unwieldy for me. As for the pocket thing, that kind of makes sense. it's a bit taller than most other phones, so it's going to feel massive compared to anything else in the pocket. You can actually add a "pull down notification" touch button on the home touch buttons, or use Third Party launchers like Nova and add a notification pull down widget/gesture. I agree the second screen location is nearly impossible to use with one hand, but I don't think that was it's purpose.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xu_bE7g2wqM

The phone is good for me. To get to the second screen I do a slight down shift(with one hand) of the phone to access it comfortably.

it is a long phone for sure and the display alone is bigger than my entire G3 but I am used to it now after a week. Now I wonder how people see anything on those 3.5" phones. I dont see phones getting smaller anytime soon... We're gonna need bigger hands.
Slide down gesture with Nova pull notification panel, as for 2nd screen I think it was designed for a second hand or people with 6" thumbs.

yeah.....test driving something is a bad idea too

No, I don't feel it's too big. BTW it's so close to the size of the Nexus 6P it's almost crazy, but yea that phone might be, and here is my reasoning.
Nexus feels week, I'm certain if I owned it I'd be getting a case.
LG V10 feels really solid and with the perfect sticky backing, and stainless rails I feel going with out a case is going to be no issue for me. Therefore it's the size it is.
Now if you go without a case it ends up being the same size as the last wave of phablets. It really feels a bit smaller in my hand then my note 4 with a spigen slim

I will say it definitely feels bigger than my Note 4. I have pretty big hands, but this is probably the largest I could go, maybe another inch but that would be uncomfortable.

That's why i went with the g4. coming from a 4.7 incher its easier than going to a 5.9 incher.
maybe second v10 next year for me.

exactly. not doing favours to your pants and if you have to remove this thing every time you sit down you're going to forget it some place.
G4 with a case is as wide and close to being as heavy but not as tall. Besides you can always remove the case and have the original smaler size .No way you want to use a case with the v10. tempered screen protector and that is it.

It is for a few people, though don't think about hand size. its more about pocket size and what you're used to. The one hand syndrome i find is more with experienced users that learnt on smaller screens and gradually adjusted up. Those that did not use smaller screens start with bigger ones.
In any case touch screens are inherently two handed in operation.

Why wouldn't you want to use a case? I purchased a Spigen case, doesn't add much size and is clear so I still see the beauty of the device. I did happen to drop it yesterday, about 4 feet onto concrete, fortunately it bounced but not even a scratch on the case, which shocked me.

This is definitely a two hand phone. I used to see people who had "phablets" as completely ridiculous people who were overcompensating for something, and then I became one of them. (lol not because of that tho )
I like it because I do my reading on it, and it's definitely an advantage when I'm unable to carry my tablet when I go to work, it also serves well as my in car GPS since I travel a lot, and of course, you guessed it, it's much better on a big screen than a smaller one. So it's all preference if anything, but this is definitely a two handed phone for me (IE: I'm a right handed person and I can't reach the top left corner with that same hand)

I have a Nexus 6, and a Note III in addition to the V10 and I don't think it's too big.

You could just add the pull down notification bar button to the navibar.

It takes time to get used to the size, it all depends on the person, on how much time it takes though. What I do know, is that after a while with these size phones, you try going back to anything under 5.2" becomes too small..

IMO the Moto Nexus 6 has an awesome in the hand design / feel. The LG G4 has a very similar shape / design. I've not gotten my V10 yet, but I think is a flatter design..

Adds more bulk to an already large device ? otherwise I very much favour cases so long as they offer the right trade off.

This one ? How is the grip.
You lost it when you have a wonderful textured back provided by the vendor. Now it will slip out of your pocket even easier because its smooth and drop. it won't adhere to surfaces as well as naked either. Third, hard cases offer minimal shock absorption compared to softer cases.
The rugged armor looks better. See those dots on the back ? not as good as stock but better than no dots.
A grippy case works better, bigger devices need to be grippy.
screw seeing the beauty, feel is what counts. I've said the same to those who apply clear cases with a leather back.
I did happen to drop it yesterday, about 4 feet onto concrete, fortunately it bounced but not even a scratch on the case, which shocked me.

that's the thing, without a case you'd have a ding or a dent. If you can handle the size fine, i can't. not unless i go through something in between first.

How's the durability of the metal back this far?

I was very disappointed to see the matte finish wear off after only a few weeks on my HTC one x. With this one I'm thinking that the back may be a scratch magnet. Anyone have significant scratching on the back yet?
in pouch all the time, no chance to scratch it
Carry mine naked (the phone not me) and not a single mark on it yet. It may be to soon to tell but so far so good..
I panicked when I realized that my keys were in the same pocket as my phone. But not a scratch yet.

No scratches on the body, but like the guy before me I accidently dropped my phone into my pocket with keys, I got a couple small little nicks on the bezel but you can only see them on an angle. I'm going to see if I can polish them out. I googled it and saw that a normal kitchen sponge with the one rough side gets them out, Also heard toothpaste and just ordered some aluminum polish.
Other people only noticed when I show them, and my GF said I have severe OCD because the nicks are so tiny. She is right. It's not really noticeable to anyone but me, but it's driving me insane!

Was that the silver or black one?
If the thing is going to looked chipped to hell in a month from normal use, I'll just return it now. My s3 started to chip the silver rim and I got rid of it immedaitely. I can't stand something that looks like crap for no reason whatsoever, actual damage is one thing but come on....
The iPhone 4 was a tank and was beautiful. Is this so much to ask from an android phone?

This isn't one of those times. The buttons on the dummy phone are not usable, it's ridiculously light, and the feel is somewhat different. The real phone was sturdier and had functional buttons, of course. They were both set out on the same day in each store and the dummy looks terrible now while the real phone looks perfect. It's a pretty decent indicator of the dummy phone being made with cheaper materials.

I just don't believe that HTC would have spent the time to assemble a phone that isn't going to be functional since it apparently takes a lot of time to assemble the aluminum body for the HTC One.

No scratches on the aluminium surface but the beats audio red logo and writing have almost disappeared. White 'audio' writing still there.
I dropped my One on hardwood and it rolled over onto a brick ramp (I was at the entrance to a restaurant) and skidded down it on its back. There are some deep scratches on the back and scuffs, but it's okay. Definitely want to put a case on it if you plan on using it out on the street

The matte finish wears off much more easily because the material was plastic. Microscopically, a matte finish is just an unpolished, jagged surface. Since it's plastic, it's not hard enough to be able to withstand the forces exerted on it when rubbed by your pocket/hand/table long enough so it gets polished over time (check out a computer mouse that's been used for a long time). This is completely different than scratching or chipping, which is a complete removal or deformation of the material. The nice thing about plastic is that because it's soft, it's much easier for hairline scratches to "heal" over time as the surface gets rubbed on.
The aluminum back will definitely maintain the matte finish better than plastic because it is a harder material. Drawback is that since it's harder, it's also more brittle so it's more subject to chips/nicks and hairline scratches will stick around forever.
TL : DR Material properties are a *****. The matte finish (it's actually a bead blasted finish) will stick around for awhile as long as your hands/table/pockets aren't made of sandpaper or things harder than aluminum.

LG G2 Drop test.

Well some of you probably waiting for this.
To keep it short:
Back drop - OK
Side drop - Fatal
Probably due to thin bezel, but we all know the risk when we brought this phone right?
yeah, looks like that thin bezel doesn't fare well on accidental drops..
thats why i ordered my Spigen Slim Armor for good reason..
Pretty much any phone will shatter the display if it lands on the side or bottom, most if not all phone are edge to edge glass these days which doesn't help.
Hmm think it does fairly poorly. Note 3 only cracked on direct drop, not from corner hit.
Also it stops working early. This is definitely not a rugged phone.

This is totally random. 100%. And these phones aren't made to be dropped from those heights either. If you are an bad user, you buy something thats made to take a few hits. Not phones like these, these should be used with care, not childish or stupid actions.

There is nothing scientific to it people. Even with all the camera angles you guys mentioned. Someone will still cry foul when it doesn't fall exactly right.
This phone looks fragile enough for it to be believed that it will break on the first fall.
-LG G2
Almost any phone if it hits just right will shatter. Its all about force. Hitting it on the corner or a small area will produce more force as its not distributed, like laying on a bed of nails as opposed to stepping on a single nail. These are all glass screens, gorilla or not. Never seen a phone that I cant find one drop test where the screen doesnt have some damage...so lets see what flexible "non-glass" displays can do...

If you consider life an extended drop test, my RAZR has survived amazingly well. To be honest, I don't know how the screen hasn't been broken. I remember when I first got it, I was afraid it would break easily from flexing because it was so thin. It never did. I even started throwing it 10 ft. in the air and letting it land on concrete and asphalt just so I could rub it into my friend's faces that used iPhones. lol, I'm such a jerk.

I gotta say my original Droid Razr seems to be indestructible. Dropped it many times and it only suffered minor scuffs.
I dropped my LG G2 today, I was trying to put it in my coat pocket and missed, so it fell on the floor from waist height and the quick view case came off but no scratch or crack to be found!
Lucky this time...

Is a case really necessary?

Obviously any case will offer more protection, and this was a very expensive phone no doubt... But I dont want to get a case other than switching out the replacement back battery cover, because once you put a case on it, it makes it even larger or my hands. I love the thin profile of the note 3 and with gorilla glass it wont scratch easily, Im super careful when I set it down on flat surfaces and if I drop it well thats the chance I'll take. I also like the chrome accents and the silvery edge that goes all around the phone, any case besides a replament back cover will obviously cover the silver fake metal sides that go all around the phone.
so is this a question? looks like you already made your decision on the matter.
obviously, any accessory is an option, not a requirement. accidents happen. cases protect the phone in those incidents. it'll also keep the original housing of the phone in better condition than the usual wear and tear if you're looking to sell it later on.
If you choose not to use a case, that's perfectly fine.

I'd love to go naked, the thin profile of this phone is terrific. But I'm too scared so this is why i like the official Samsung flip covers that replace the back cover. They maintain the thin profile but at least offer some more protection than going naked. As a great bonus they turn the screen on and off when you open and close the cover respectively.
Its not if you don't plan to sell anytime soon. Screen protectors degrade image quality and most non OEM cases look tacky.
I got the slim fit spigen case. Initial trial of it, although it's probably not adding a whole lot of weight, it feels like it is compared to when I was running naked for the first couple weeks while waiting for it to come in. I've since opted to run naked. I do have a slim armour spigen coming in for days where I will be a bit more active or if I'm mounting it onto something.
IMO, flip cases are annoying because I snap photos all the time, and the flip cases simply get in the way requiring me to hold it with two hands when other cases just one hand operation to snap works. As well unless it's the s-view ones, its super annoying to flip open everytime you want to check something small like the time.
My phone itself is naked.
I can't stand flipcases, as the flap keeps getting in the way of everything. (I'm a woman, so I have even less chance of holding it in one hand, Meaning I always have the flap in the palm of my hand.)
Screen protectors look ugly, are a nightmare to apply and reduce the screen quality. My phone goes nowhere near my keys, so it's not needed.
I am keeping an eye out for an aluminium backcover, but so far there's very little of them. Those that are available don't ship outside the US.
I do keep the phone in a walletcase when it's in my pocket or on the table. This way I can lay it on top of the case so I don't scratch the camera: http://shop.golla.com/epages/Golla.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/Golla/Products/G1406
I admire you naked guys really, I don't dare that my 700€ device could drop and brake. It's a huge device in hand and if you do a work that is hard the phone eventually will drop, also you cannot grab it fully with 1 hand. Offcourse I love also the slim naked feel of it but I don't risk it. Atm I have a clear bumber and a tempered tr glass till my Spigen case arrives and I feel secure.
Sent from my SM-N9005 using Tapatalk
It's silly to not have a case on a $700 device that you use throughout each and every day. I work in cellular retail and every time someone brings in a broken smartphone without a case I ask them about it, and their response is always along the lines of "I'm always super careful and this has never happened before!" and half the time they don't have insurance either.
Accidents happen, which is why they are called accidents; no one can be 100% sure they won't have a careless moment. Not to mention sometimes it's someone ELSE'S carelessness that can end with your phone being broken.
Verizon has a thin shell case (with optional holster) that provides a little grip, a handy kickstand, and most importantly a bit of a raised edge along the screen and camera. It probably won't help much for a 6 ft drop on concrete, but it's definitely better than nothing at all and will at least help prevent scratches if you are against screen protectors.

my last three main daily driver phone I ran naked. Asus PDA (plastic screen), T-Mobile dash, HTC evo 3d. There were some other pretty boss phones in that mix of the last ten years but those were the phones I loved. Non of them had screen protectors or cases. I got my NOTE3 and now I have been protector/case concerned. The device is just so thin and so jewelry like that I'm going to wrap it up tight and see if it adversely effects the experience. Not Otterbox tight, I never understood that methodology. I'm going glass screen protector and slimmest of cases. Unles there is an artful reason to do otherwise which I think is possible. But I need a Golla bag without Zipper or carbineer, just dual belt loop. A saggy bag with a big velco flap that I can use as a transport mechanism. Hard clip holsters suck. I want padded sliding desert bag style low profile, that I set on my belt in the morning with loops and forget about until night. A few years ago Golla had that exact thing. Now they don't. I'm just going to sew myself what I want out of canvas until the market catches up. Horizontal belt clip? are you kidding me?
1 question? Are you mad? This phone? Naked? This is a precious baby you don't go naked with this. It's that awesome I'm waiting for the otterbox.

No, not very likely; I'm asexual. Me having children is something that'll never happen.
I occasionally teach 6-12 year olds for a day. (a few friends of the family are primary school teachers, they sometimes ask me to do photography, tech or design classes for them.)
Not a chance in hell am I letting them touch my phone. Or my tablet. Or my laptop. Or my camera. Or anything else that could easily be damaged.
Also, according to Google a jackalope is a rabbit with antlers.. Is Google on drugs or is that actually correct?

My godson could as angry birds on it anytime as well... It's only a phone. It's insured, and of not, easily replaceable. The day any material possession becomes more valuable than a person in my life, is a sad day indeed.

Your $700 N3, wait I mean $1000 N3 costs more than the average car? You don't let anyone touch your phone? My girl can use it anytime she wants, if she needs it. My godson could as angry birds on it anytime as well... It's only a phone. It's insured, and of not, easily replaceable. The day any material possession becomes more valuable than a person in my life, is a sad day indeed.
PS- I absolutely love my phone too. Just not as much as people in my life.

Yes, 1025 USD, it's 750 euros here. Welcome to Europe.
I'm 22, you don't seriously think people my age can afford cars over that price I should hope. Certainly not in this economy.
I suppose that's the difference, I don't have such people in my life.

Will you be using a case on your G3?

If/when you get the G3, will you put it in a case immediately?
I used to never use cases until I dropped and cracked my Note 2, so now I've always used cases. I didn't mind using one on the G2 since the back was a glossy, slippery plastic and I didn't care for it, but the G3 looks awesome and I'd hate to cover it up.

I plan on 2 cases, 1 minimal case for everyday and 1 dual layer for when I know it'll be more likely to take a tumble.

I always use a case to protect the phone. It actually increases the resell value as the phone seems like new after removal of case.
LG made a case for the G3 that enhances the use of QuickCircle™. QuickCircle is basically the use of widgets without turning the whole screen on which can save (very little) battery.
Since my description is horrible, here is a video of it posted by LG themselves:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVtZAPjOcBI
case, possibly a mophie if that 3000mAh can't handle the 4k too well, and if it does, then Incipio. I'm not a fan of otterboxes. Both because I don't ever wanna spend 100+ to repair a cracked anything: I like my phone DAPPER. Also for resell value as well. Thats how I buy new ones.
If I do end up getting a G3, I'll certainly get a case. If I were to guess, a case has saved my Nexus 4 at least twice.
I had seen in a background of one of the summary videos a Tridant stand with an array of different colors. Though Tridant does make pretty thick cases so I'll probably stay away from it. Definitely looking for something with a slim design. Probably get another Diztronic
I dont why I dont like the round back of the g3 amazing device and specs but the rounded back feels and looks bad in my point of view.

Would you be saying the same thing if you dropped it and cracked the screen? *knocks on wood* That you don't be I'm curious how many people would say the same once they drop it and have to buy new phones or get it repaired.
Me, I always get a case since I like to protect my investment and better to be safe than sorry. Plus, having a case has saved my phones in the past.

I hear you but I stopped using cases on my phone going back to the nexus one. I may get a ding or 2 here and there but, knock on wood, I've never cracked a screen. I do use screen protectors and most recently have fallen in love with tempered glass screen protectors.

I never use cases or screen protector on phones, I keep them naked as god intended
In 15 years with mobiles, I never dropped any of them once.
I usually have a case ready for when I go on holidays, to the beach or in any place where I'll toss the phone in a bag. Apart from that, nope.
It's a problem. When you use a case you keep your phone safe from breaking and scratching, but you lose the light weight, the small size and the ergonomic design. I think I'll try to use it without a case this time.
There are slim cases that don't ruin the phone. I am going to get a clear case made my ringkle I think.

I will get hybrid case for protection.
Granted, my Note 3 fell in hard ground few times, but it's saved due to protection of hybrid case.
There was a time when I used to swear by the biggest bulkiest cases to protect my device like a baby for resale purposes. But after many years of seeing that I pretty much never drop my phone (due to the way I handle it) and I'm buying these nice feeling slim devices all the time but the whole time I am just holding a thick piece of rubber in my hand and never actually getting to feel the device design, I decided I am done with cases.
Thanks to the recent introduction of tempered glass screen protectors to the market, I can now have piece of mind that in the rare case I drop my phone screen-side down I would still be able to use it without worrying about a single damage to the display itself. I swear by caseless devices ever since I had the Galaxy S3 and I have not regretted the decision since. Of course, such scenario doesn't work for everyone if you are not OCD-like careful with your devices like I am and are prone to drops quite often. In that case I would recommend a high quality ultra-slim case if you want to maintain the design/feel of the phone with just a slightly different material (matte/rubberized plastic cases can actually feel pretty nice, kinda reminds me of the Nexus 5).
i normally don't like to put a case on my phone as it'll disturb the aesthetic intention of the design. however, if its a slim case that doesn't interrupt the design of the phone, then i might consider one.
This makes me think... All these defeat the purpose of the LG g3 slim design.

I'm the same, rarely drop my phone nowadays and now I use premium screen protectors so the tempered glass protector I just ordered should help the screen from any serious damage.
Not since my S4 do i use cases. Jut make the phone more bulky and ugly. Didn't help my s4 screen just breaking in my pocket from heat change.

[Q] Z Ultra or Nexus 5?

Hi guys.
So i've been thinking about buying either one of these devices.
i'm leaning more towards the z ultra because it's such a gorgeous device, but i don't know if i'll be able to carry it around like a regular smartphone and i've been seeing a lot of complaints about screens breaking.
i really wanted the opinion of you guys on this, how is it to use a z ultra in your daily routine, is it weird to walk around with it on your pocket?
the nexus 5 however, is a beautiful device aswell, but a 5" screen seems too small for me.
so, z ultra, might be too big and fragile?
and nexus 5, too small?
or maybe there is another device that can reach a mid-term?

It must be only me but the last phone I carried in my pocket was a Motorola flip phone years ago. I carry the ZU in a nylon tool holster pouch that clips on to my pants pocket (it also has a belt loop but it stays on fine with clip).

Carrying around a nylon tool holster is too ugly imo.
but i've seen a few videos and seems like it fits very well in most pants and shorts. want to know if it feels to heavy on the pocket? or weird?

IN my tighter pants (with smaller pockets) it sticks out a little and is noticeable, in all my shorts and most pants it's fine. Note I have mine in a flip cover so that adds some more bulk to the ZU.

Hmm nice to know. it realy amazes me how cheap this phone got, it's cheaper than the nexus 5 and the lg g2 and it has that massive screen.
btw, i saw a review from a guy saying it uses gorila glass 3, but i don't think it does, can anyone clear that out?
and, is there a chance of the screen breaking just by using it in a mildly tight pocket ? cause i've seen a lot of posts here saying the screen is very fragile.

What about weight wise, does it weights in your pocket?
I don't find the phone to be heavy at all, especially for its size. It's freaking huge though, which can be a burden at times.

Carrying it around in your front pocket, which i do, can be uncomfortable when you're sitting down, bending, etc. I wear loose fitting jeans, and im 6-2", so it isn't too bad. This Phone is just plain huge though, and it will be a problem for some people.
Watch this video and check out this girl trying to stick it in her pocket.

Hmmm. firetruck! that just made me more unsure, cause the phone is extremely cheap right now with such an amazing hardware. would you happen to know any good phone with a screen bigger than or equal to 5.5 and same hardware for the same price?
You can buy a 1+
Doesn't have to buy where i'm going to buy.
is the lg g2 or nexus 5 any good?

Can't, it'll be released in november and i'll be doing a trip at the end of this month, and i'm going to buy the phone there cause it's way cheaper than where i live.
i'm still in doubt between the lg g2, nexus 5 or the z ultra :/
I had the nexus 5 and switched over to the xzu.. I have to say given the opportunity I'd take back my Nexus 5. Don't get me wrong performance wise and price they are both on par. I've installed a ported version of the Google play edition Rom and it works perfectly well. Downside is the size of this device,, it really is massive and I bought it thinking I would get use to it eventually... 2 months on and I'm still having a hard time getting use to holding it. Also I'm not sure if this issue is wide spread but the screen on this thing is super sensitive (no screen protector). When I say sensitive I mean as in I get random presses from just about anything from screen condensation, breeze and oil smudges and it gets so annoying especially when you're trying to compose an email and it hits the send button mid way. I've even tried out a hack to reduce the screen sensitivity but it still occurs from time to time. Also coming from a Nexus line I have to say there's barely any activity or new developments in the XZU forums,,something you might want to consider if you're into customizing or flashing roms all the time.

i think i'm sticking with the z ultra afterall.
i've received a very positive review of this smartphone by a friend of mine who owns one, he says this is the best phone he ever had.
Just remove the ASF and apply a tempered glass over for reinforcement. No more ghost touches and you get the best experience.
Also you get the naked Nexus look on front without logo.
Best device I had in years and trust me I had a lot, including Nexus 5.
