LG V10 IR Blaster Weak? - LG V10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been using the IR Blaster on the G2 for years to control my TV and receiver. Ever since I got the V10 I have been having trouble using the IR blaster. I have to press the buttons in the remote multiple times and try multiple angles even from 10 ft away. It seems I can't even control my TV from more than 15 ft. Anyone else noticing a really weak IR Blaster in the V10?

I've been using "QuickRemote" that came with my LG V10 (AT&T) and it works with my LG TV and Mitsubishi TV.

How far away from the TV are you when using it?
Sent from my LG-H900 using Tapatalk

The LG TV is in the bedroom, maybe 10—12 feet. The Mitsubishi TV is in the living room is about 15 feet.

Hmm, I'll test some other devices today, maybe it's the IR receiver
Sent from my LG-H900 using Tapatalk

It's not very weak, but fairly weaker that note 4 and s6 edge. You just need to point in the right spots where the receivers are. I am using the anymote smart remote. Give it a shot.

I've definitely noticed the blaster is weak. I'm about 15 feet from my TV and couldn't get it setup from my couch. I had to walk to the TV to set it up. It seems to work 75% of the time from my couch now.

Alright, good to hear I'm not the only one who found it a little weaker than other devices.
This is kinda unfortunate though

I see weak performance as well. 6-8 feel work without much problem but get past 12 feet or so and it gets very iffy.

That's weird... I have the complete opposite. IR works great for both living room and bedroom TV. (Both LG)

Its not as responsive as my note 4. I too have to make sure the "angle" is correct. May be a case issue though. Something about this first round of cases seem off.

Nah, you're right, Samsung's are IR blasters are a lot more powerful. At least LG decided to keep a IR Blaster.

I thought I was the only one. HTC m8 had the best ir blaster compared to my v10 and my brother's s5.

Yes. I have to sit directly in front of the TV for it to work. Off at a 30 degree angle, it doesn't work. My HTC One M9 worked fine from the same location, so I'd attribute this to the IR blaster in the V10.

This is kinda disappointing. I can barely even use quick remote. What's the point of even including an IR sensor if its so weak. It's more of marketing gimmick more than anything

Works great for me...definitely works better than the one in the Note 5.

I have same issue and I went to this and potentially the G5 coming out mostly for the IR blaster. If I'm going to have to spend 100 bucks for anymote home, then I have a much larger choice of phones now. When using the built in app or anymote app, I have to be pointing directly at the device without much angle for it to work and I don't have a case or anything that would block anything. My harmony remote has no problems. It turns on my projector on the floor and my receiver and cable box across the room without an issue. Forget using one touch to turn on everything with this. My receiver and cable box are across the room off to the side, I have to reach over from the couch to try to get line of site.

It is weak.
I loved my HTC One because there is a sound bar in front of my tv, and I could aim the blaster at the ceiling and signals would bounce down to the tv. With the V10, 10 feet is about the usable limit. I went to a pub and everyone who had an IR blaster downloaded Peel Smart remote and had fun with the televisions - except me. Mine was the only phone that couldn't reach the tv from our table.

I love my phone.

Well... I love my phone. I don't know what to say, I mean, I just do! I've been thinking about it and it's like.. why are we so specpical and specific? That's why we loose the technological battle.. we are too specific and detailed. I mean sure there is a microscopic fraction of a pixel that is dark on dead center of my screen and there is a slight gap on the top between the speaker grill and the white rim, but so? We bonded tonight. Don't discriminate again this amazing phone because of such small things that might be strange or slightly f'ed up, because overall, it's the most advanced and speedy pocket cellular device available in the universe.

You know what made me REALLY love this phone? This morning when I wanted to turn the TV on to watch the news and the remotes were all the way on my computer desk. I picked up my phone and turn the TV on and got my news fix.
This phone is awesome! :good:
I love your phone too.. Can I have it?!? I could always use a spare. lol
I wish I had a chance to check out the remote control features but I don't ever watch TV on a real TV anymore in real-time. I always watch shows on 1channel or tvmuse. I use an app called unified remote to control pretty much everything on my computer. Spotify, Youtube, Netflix even use it as a mouse and keyboard if your laptop isn't on your lap but close by

I wish I could love mine.. First phone had a gap I could fit my thumb nail in.. replacement has 8 stuck white pixels, some brighter then others so I'm sure it's like 30 stuck pixels. Thinking about an s4 now

Luckily, you don't need to watch much TV to enjoy the remote control. Just visit a local watering hole or restaurant and enjoy the sheer comedy of watching their employees figure out why the TV's keep turning on and off. :highfive:

Is the Xperia ZU comfortable to use?

Yes or No and why. I'm on the fence right now and really wanna know what it's like walking, sitting down and operating a huge phone.
If you can operate a Note 2 you can operate this phone. It is a bit hard to use with one hand but you can with some getting used to it
I would trade 1 handed use for screen any day. How often are you stuck with just 1 hand to do everything? 3% of the time maybe?
I am very comfortable using the phone. I thought size might be a factor but it's not. It is a pleasure to use.
I would imagine using it as a small tablet is comfortable, but are you guys using it as a phone by itself? As in holding it up to your head? Or do you pair a bluetooth device to make calls?

Yes, I use it as a phone holding it to my head. I bought a bluetooth device thinking I would use that as a handset but it remains unused.
Are there any issues with the other side hearing you? While on my note 2, if I'm not talking in normal/loud voice, the other person may complain they can't hear me very well (or maybe it's just this particular restaurant in specific). Since the XZU is so long, it'll go WAY past where your mouth is.

No complaints as of yet.
I don't have the largest hands and I can type in landscape with very little effort. It is hefty, but since it's so slim, you don't really notice. I've made a few phone calls and I'll admit, it looks strange, but doesn't feel unnatural.

No issue for me, if still comfortable for me.
I can make calls with it no problem. No need for a bluetooth device at all unless you want one.
My biggest concern actually is using the phone as a music player. The audio jack is on thw side so it might be too tight on the pants. And while driving, it might be impossible to switch between tracks with one hand lol
I wish android implemented swipe gestures on the screen to wakeup. Its almost effortless and is an elegant solution especially if your phone is idle on a table top

Coming from iPhone 5, I need some adjustment to typing on this device. However, browsing websites and reading articles from Current and Buzzfeed is great, it has that book-reading feel to it. In fact, the big ass screen makes it a pleasure.
It's easy to hold with one hand but making phone calls made me feel awkward, and a little bit embarassed.
I feel like I made the right choice to return to android with this device. I wish it has tablet capacity battery though.

The audio jack on the side is ridiculous - sony did this on XSP too (sony seems to be good at spoiling decent devices ), especially on a "smartphone" this big :silly:
I'm also getting an XZU in couple of weeks, and if using audio cable while the phone is in my pocket proved impossible, I think the workaround is using the wireless bluetooth.. Sounds like it defeat the purpose of a fully-waterproofed audio jack, but some compromise must be made, huh
First look I worry about the size, now I love the size. Inside my pocket no problem for walk, sit and run. I put my note 2 and zu together with my jean pocket or short paint is ok. No doubt.
One hand operate no problem for me. Because I m the big hand.
When incoming call also no problem, answer without bluetooth. Now I won't worry the size only how to root my device.
One more think is this device suitable for male better than female. When my wife hold it look like holding a M16.

Here's a fresh preview video from Pocket Now. The Ultra Vs the Note 2
I found the Note 2 too awkward to use so I sent it back. If I had issues with that would this device be even worse?
I don't have the ZU yet, so I can't really give you an answer, but what didn't you like about the Note 2? Was it too big?

It was partly the size but more just its general handling, reaching across the screen even though I tried clustering stuff on one side of it. I had a Galaxy Note sometime prior & I got on with that reasonable well & though the Note 2 was bigger of screen I still thought I would be OK with it.
I taking out my phone from the jeans every time I get in the car.

Anyone going to buy an android wear?

Hey guys
Google IO was yesterday and of course they released android wear, I would love the moto 360 but it looks like I'll have to get a g watch because I really don't like Samsung
Are you guys going to be getting any of them?

I love the idea of the 360, but I'm worried the novelty of a circular screen will wear off quickly and the lack of screen space for notifications will get annoying. I'm a big LG fan (despite getting the Z2) but their watch just looks boring. The Samsung is cheaper, has a higher resolution screen and looks nicer, so loathe as I am to give Samsung any more money after two miserable phones with botched software updates, they might be the option for me.

Also its a watch, Samsung one has OLED display, thus better visibility in the outdoors.
I had two smartwatches...
I sold first (Sony Smartwatch) and still have brand new Omate TrueSmart siting on my shelf...
Just can't find purpose for it.
I have watch, good watch on my hand and smartband to get notifications and I'm perfectly fine with it.
I really don't need another gadget to charge every night and believe me, there's no smartwatch with good battery.
One, max two days and that's it...
I have 8 gadgets to charge every night so I gave up from smartwatches

From early reports it seems it's the same screen as the Galaxy Gear, which wasn't brilliant in direct sunlight (which you can kind of understand in something where battery life is important)
I have a Pebble Smartwatch now and am planning on buying the Moto 360. I can understand how the novelty of a circular screen would wear out and the lack of extra screen space might get annoying but I feel that if we just see it as a watch and a companion to your phone then it should be fine. I personally want the Moto 360 because it's the nicest looking of the 3 watched IMO. It's going to be a device that is on my wrist for the world to see every time I'm out so I want it to look damn nice.
Do you know if the Samsung will be able to play music independently of a phone like the Gear 2 and Neo?
I want a smart watch that I can wear while running that will provide GPS as well as let me listen to music via bluetooth headphones.
Is there such a device?
Thanks

heh, how will anyone ever get used to the idea of charging a watch everyday or at the end of the week or replacing the battery every month.
We don't do it now, have not done it since automatic watches came out, decades ago.
There is no killer app for smart watches as yet.
As far as the OP goes, i will watch this space for another couple of years. Its too immature right now, kinda like android phones back in 2012, ie expensive toys.
Does the Samsung work with non Samsung phones? If you go over to the Google playstore they have both the LG and the Samsung up already but the Samsung says its for Samsung phones only while the LG says its for Android phones.
I'm going to wait until the first few get shipped and see how they fair in the real world. I ordered my Nexus 5 day one and regretted it. Great phone, assuming you're a walking battery pack.

Thank You JKR. I forgot about this device. Did a little research and it looks like it can be rooted. Did you root yours? If rooted would I then be able to use apps such as Runtastic and Google Play Music?
That would be perfect as I use the streaming service for most of my music now. Hopefully be able to save playlists to device.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2380947 youll have to install a custom rom, with a bit of tinkering youll get it working fine with play music offline playback. Im not sure about runtastic. Back then I just exported to runkeeper. Check this thread for more info: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2380947

I came from a SGS3 and I'm satisfied with the G3, overall. I hate the sharpening that occurs on text which is scaled down and I hate the stock pastel UI colors. I find the screen resolution does little to actually enhance the user experience. Lastly, I hate that the audio amp doesn't play nicely with low impedance speakers (you'll hear static in the left audio channel unless there's a ~ 64 ohm or higher load or the speakers are below 64 ohms and not very sensitive). The flipside is that audio output is excellent when using quality headphones or audio gear (not Beats trash, I'm talking about real audiophile-grade stuff).
Everything else about the phone is great, especially if you have large hands!
The display looks pretty good in the store, but I do have a tab s that I use for YouTube or anything media. I compared the phone size to my m8 and they are the same size. Does it have a car mode? I drive 2hrs a day to work and hate the car mode on this m8

You are going to have a hard time with any screen and polarized sunglasses. The lag is very subjective. I do not notice lag except for a bit right after boot up. Also if you are like me and like sense you use G3 Tweaksbox along with enabling the hidden menu to allow themes for the launcher to get the look of sense.

My note 3 screen was dim with shades on but the htc is completely black. Has anyone had the heat issues?
I came to my G3 from a Droid 3 so it was quite an upgrade and I couldn't be happier. I pretty much did everything hacking related that could be done to my Droid 3 and finally just got tired of how slow it was. It would take 1 full minute just to load facebook. The G3 is pretty amazing. All we need now is an unlocked bootloader. <crossing fingers>
We needed the unlocked boot loader with the Droid3 too. Motorola promised us, like LG has, but never unlocked it.
I still have a few of those Droid3s around somewhere. I used to use them when traveling in Europe since they did well there on cheap local sims once unlocked for international use by Verizon. When Hashcode developed SafeStrap, things got pretty nice though, as long as you didn't need the camera. I think I stopped at Jellybean.
The Verizon G3, like all recent Verizon LTE phones, works on about any GSM carrier by just inserting an active SIM chip and setting up the APN and mode.
I am on T-Mobile 4gLTE right now on mine. Gets amazing download data speeds.
I agree with you about the Droid 3 and safestrap. Safestrap made it so easy to backup and restore my ROM but the camera bug was very frustrating. I finally ended up just using Minimoto which was a stripped down stock ROM with the holo launcher. It worked well, had all of the garbage bloatware removed, and the camera still worked.

Had the M8 for a couple of months back when it first came out. Great phone but I don't miss it one bit. I usually root my phone's within a couple of days but not with this one. No car mode
Pros: great standby on battery, speaker is decent for a rear facing one, design feels good in hand, camera is great, cell signal reception is great
Cons: screen is next to impossible to see outdoors in sunlight unless you really crank the brightness, little but noticeable lag/stutter especially in app drawer nothing major, screen on time is OK but definitely not best, and for some reason this phone is super picky about charger and cable combo (have used the same high quality chargers for all my phones mostly but the g3 slow charges or sometimes simply goes into not charging mode, works fine with stock cable though)

The same here!
How much do you value root (and possible bootloader unlock)? Or else you might want to wait for Moto X+1 and/or Note 4.
Personally I am overall satisfied with my purchase but its not without its flaws (like any other phone).
It's a nice phone, but I am not sure I would say it's much better than an m8. These phones are so comparable anymore, it's hard to justify the monies for them IMO. I used to switch constantly, had jump with tmobile and every 6 months switched out. Now, on contract with Verizon and keeping this for a good while.
I do have the heating issue, only when taking a bunch of pictures and or videos. Automatically dims my screen to cool it off. It was ridiculously hot!
Besides that it's a nice phone.

I had the heating issue once when I was recording a video in UHD (which is limited to 5 minutes because of extreme heating). Other than that the phone will get warm but nothing out of the ordinary.

did anybody get ear phones with their LG G5?

I didn't get any ear phones with mine so I was wondering if anybody else got any. I have AT&T.
Sprint version here and nothing either. Cant remember the last time my android device came with earbuds

ok, I thought I got ripped off. The last phone I bought was the Samsung S5. It came with the earbuds.
Samsung is still including headphones with their devices including the s7 and s7 edge, however I have not gotten a pair of LG headphones through the last several purchases, LG g3, G4, V10, and now G5

How do you like the phone. I'm thinking about switching to Sprint from Verizon and getting this phone?

Loving it so far and much better than my previous phones (G2, G3, G4, iPhone 6, Nexus 5X,) It's incredibly comfortable to hold and use - fits perfectly in my hand and does not show fingerprints, has good grip, just feels right. The top of the screen has a slight curve to it which is really nice swiping down for notifications.
Performance-wise it's a beast.
Gonna keep if for 10 days and re-assess. I almost bought a 6P but grabbed this instead, mainly because of replacement battery, up to 2TB expandable storage - it was the last one left and the 3 staff members had nothing but negative things to say about it at the Best Buy Mobile where I picked it up. None of them had ever used the phone. They just kept asking why don't I just get an S7 or iPhone? lol

That bothers me as well when people have not used the phone. I'm really on the fence since I'll be changing carrier as well. I'm using the Nexus 6P right now. Pretty nice phone I might add.
