I bought one of these SanDisk USB thumb drives that have a normal USB type A connector, as well as a micro USB type A connector. The drive works just fine, if connected to my PC. It's formatted with the stock FAT32.
If I connect it to the Z5c, nothing happens. If I search for connected USB devices in the settings, I get a "USB connected" message at the bottom and a new notification pops up, which says something like "Using USB storage is limited because of a security policy" (I don't have the message in English, because I'm using the German UI). If I enter the storage section of the settings, I can click on wipe or mount USB storage. Wiping seems to work fine after entering my system password, but mounting does absolutely nothing (the option is not grayed out, as some other people are experiencing it, it just doesn't do anything). So the USB storage isn't being displayed properly in the settings (it should show the space used, free space, etc.), and I can't access it using any file utilities like ES File Explorer.
My Z5c is running stock 32.0.A.6.152. I don't have USB debugging enabled (all dev options are turned off) and I'm not using any special security settings or software. Device and SD encryption are enabled.
Is USB OTG storage working for anyone? Or are you experiencing similar issues? Any ideas what I could try to fix this?
Thanks!
/edit: I just noticed that the "erase USB" option formats the drive with exFAT. So the basic USB OTG and detection stuff is working just fine, it just doesn't mount the drive properly for some reason.
You have to tap "Detect USB device" from quick toggles.
Thanks for the suggestion, but that's doing exactly the same as searching for/detect USB devices from the connectivity settings menu (you don't need the quick toggle, if you're not using it a lot). This seems to work, I'm getting the "USB connected" message and the notification with the security policy appears.
Does really no one use USB OTG with their Z5? I'd also appreciate a few simple reports about working examples.
If you think this is too specific for this subforum, maybe it should be moved to a more general one.
Hi, I understand the latest version of android doesn't accommodate eg USB devices. Or allow me to connect to my printer via cable. I had a Z3 and both worked fine but the Z5 has a newer version of android which I'm told no longer support this. You could try going back to an older version of android?
HTH, John
I also had this problem. Note however that the detect USB devices in quick toggle resolved it.
I'm successfully using a Kingston DT microDUO 3.0 64GB OTG disk with my Z5 Compact via the "Detect USB Device" toggle. This just made my life so much easier when dumping pictures off of the phone while away from home.
Mount USB but can not find the folder
Hello everyone,
I have a similar problem.
With Lollipop I always used the OTG function without problems, going to detect the external memory folder dedicated "USB memory" (or something similar)
Yesterday I tried for the first time to use the same function with marshmallow root and explorer, but are not able to find the dedicated folder (even under Storage) memory connected externally although has activated and detects notification USB connected.
Any suggestions? Perhaps the folder is located elsewhere?
If yes, how is called?
Sorry for the English, I used google translator ..
In lingua originale, italiano
Monta l'USB ma non trovo la cartella
Ciao a tutti,
Qualche suggerimento? Forse la cartella si trova altrove?
Se sì, come si chiama?
Scusatemi per l'inglese, ho usato google traduttore..

What would be the reason to use usb otg? I've never understood the need.
I used it a few times before the update. I should check to see if it still works
Sent from my E5823 using XDA Free mobile app
I did some tests:
*- Inserting the plug, after activating the command dedicated on notifications bar, I get the item to open the folder with files of USB, so I can see the files.
- Through this explorer files can copy and restore files on the phone memory (internal or SD card)
- Are not able, however, to transfer files from phone to USB! (Thing before, with Lollipop, was possible!)
So I did another test:
- Using the application Root Explorer I searched for a file only present on USB (already mounted correctly and recognized by device), but has not found the fiel searched, as if it were more accessible.

This feature for me was very useful to pass numerous files (over 1GB) to a friend through a simple USB, failing other available instruments (pc, tablet or smarpthone).
You tell me another way to move files on a USB having only one smartphone?
For me it would be very helpful!
If there are only images to be transferred (often photo) between two Android instead, in other situations similar, is very fast and practical use Quick Pic with the function to transfer photos via WiFi (without network data), using another device doing hotspot router, but it is a condition that requires specific characteristics right.
I had the solution in an Italian forum.
Certain problems are due to the type of memory (FAT32 or NTFS).
To write from device to USB, or vice versa, I can do it with the Nexus Media Importer app, I had already bought a Nexus 7. Without root, on Z5c with stock MM, it allows you to see and write the files after opening the correct settings, always after mounting the USB from the notification bar.
The procedure is not simple and trivial as with Lollipop, but neither particularly difficult and it works!

The message "Using USB storage is limited because of a security policy" is is caused by the activation of sd card encryption

Is there anyway to get the X10mini pro to show up in windows as a standard USB mass storage device, like my camera or MP3 player? I want to be able to simply copy files over to the phone without using Sony’s software etc. Is there an app I can download for this?
when i connne it shows up as long as there is a memory card not sure if need to select mount usb on the phone menu , if you want the phone memory im not sure its possible to view but as its not that big i guess ur just looking for the memory card
how do you select mount usb on the phone menu? I am still unable to connect this phone as a usb mass storage device and upload files to the card without the Sony Software

When you plug in the USB cable from the PC to the phone, are you greeted with this menu (see attached image)
Thanks I am familiar with that screen, however I can't get the phone to be treated as a USB mass storage device. I just want to be able to browse the memory card like on an MP3 player, camera etc without having to use the Sony software. Is there anyway I can do this natively in windows or linux?

When that screen pops up, just select "Connect my phone", and it'll mount it in mass storage mode. Works perfectly fine for me on PCs without the software installed. Haven't tried it on linux, but it works on my car's stereo that plays mp3s off a connected usb device, so I can't see why it wouldn't
My phone works like that but only with the phone drivers installed. I treid this before I installed the phone drivers but windows just said the drive was unreadable. Also you can't browse the entire directory structure.
Very odd. My Windows XP SP2 has no drivers in it for the phone but manages to read the memory card
Works fine here as regular usb mass storage in Mac OS X.

Ive just suddenly had a brainwave: asking for drivers? That to me sounds like its in USB debugging mode. Switch that off and it should be ok
Hello all,
I'm trying to read/write to the phone storage while the phone is connected using "USB storage".
This seems to put the phone storage in a lock. FTP apps that work flawlessly (using wlan) can't read/write to the phone storage. Also Play Store can't download and install apps.
Any idea on how to do this? (keep in mind that the scenario with both usb and wlan connections is mandatory)
If it helps (but i am also willing to buy another phone with another version of Android just to make this work):
Android 4.4.2
Kernel 3.4.67
Sorry for my English and Thank you!!!
Has anyone explored the USB support on the Xperia Z4 tablet? If you have, can you confirm that if an external memory device such as a memory stick is connected it disables the internal SD card? If any apps have been transferred to the SD card they then become inaccessible and the Z4 can become unstable. The only way to restart the apps is to remove the memory stick and manually restart the Z4!
This is so serious that I am about to contact Sony and tell them that with its current configuration, the Z4 tablet is unfit for use!
external USB does not work here <- wrong, corrected
I plugged in an USB-Adapter to connect several USB-Sticks. That did not work.
I remember it worked with an ancient Toshiba AT300 Tablet three years ago. Have not used it since then ...
Nowadays I use Software Data Cable but this is no fun (permission wise) on my stock, unrooted Z4 Tablet.
I have a 128 GBytes MicroSD card plugged in but this is no fun (permission wise) on my stock, unrooted Z4 Tablet.
I did not unplug the MicroSD card.
EDIT: I stand corrected by ITotem (next Post #3)
It works - but not automagically (as it does on my Toshiba Tablet). Both - SD Card and external Storage - work simultanously!

If you try to connect USB storage to your Z4 Tablet it seems not to work (tested on 28.0.A.6.8).
But as found out at w ww.coolsmartphone.com/2015/06/27/xperia-z4-tablet-missing-usb-otg-support/ it is! Its only unneeded complicated...
In short: go to "Settings" -> "Xperia Connectivity" -> "USB Connectivity" -> "Detect USB device" while storage is already connected. Then it's showing up in /storage/usbdisk as it should be.
(under "USB Connectivity" -> "Tips for connecting with USB device" you can add a shortcut to quicksettings)
Let's hope Sony will fix this to auto connect as it was working e.g. in Tablet Z. There it is showing up immediately when you plugged it in without a need to touch minimum 3 times!!!!

Thanks for the reply.
I have used the solution mentioned, but the issue is not connecting to the USB memory, which does work as described, but what happens to the Z4 when you do get connected. Losing access to the SD card in the memory expansion slot is a major problem.

I have been in touch with Sony 'Xperia Care' about the issues I have raised with the USB support on the Z4 tablet. I have the full transcript, but the following extracts from their email confirm my worst suspicions. They said:
'I can confirm that when a USB device is connected to the tablet the SD card is meant to unmount.'
and
'We would also not recommend using a USB hub on the tablet as this not the intended purpose of connecting a USB device to the tablet, the main one being for external storage. '
What follows is based on my experience so far:
This means that while a USB memory device is attached to the Z4 tablet, any app which has been transferred to the SD card will stop. If an app attempts to run in the background, the Z4 tablet can crash. This has happened on my Z4 tablet.
Using 'Tap here to safely remove USB storage' does not re-mount the SD card. The only way to restore access to the SD card is to restart the Z4 tablet.
On some occasions, both USB memory AND SD based apps work, despite what Xperia Care say! However this not the norm!
Although Sony do not recommend the use of USB hubs, they do work. However:
If the hub offers power to the Z4 tablet, the Z4 will go in to 'charge' mode and disables the OTG data mode.
If the hub is completely non-powered, the Z4 tablet is likely to disable power to the USB port and close it down if you attach multiple devices. It certainly can't power a USB powered hard drive, unlike my LG G3 phone which can!
If the hub powers USB devices but not the Z4 tablet, it seems to work normally. However, the USB implementation on the Z4 can only support ONE memory device, again unlike my LG G3 phone which supports the two I have tried and probably more!
I have told Xperia Care that I think the USB support on the Z4 tablet is a mess!
I was going to start a new thread but then found this. I like to use a mouse with my Z4 - it completes the PC-like setup. However, I have found that whenever I want to use a wireless mouse, the dongle connectd to the OTG cable is not recognized until I reboot the tablet. I wondered if I had a problem but it looks as though it could be the same issue as reported here.
I was looking for a thread for USB experiences on the Z4 tablet and found this. At the same time, I've been experimenting with different setups and also testing the problems cited here. I've had NO problems so far, so I'll give a run down on what I've been running.
I have a USB non-powered hub attached. From that, I'm running wireless keyboard/mouse combo. At the same time, I've attached a powered external Maxell HDD, which happens to be NTFS.
To mount the HDD, I've used ExFAT/NTFS. This opens directly into another required file management app called Total Commander (TC). ExFAT/NTFS needs to be running for the file commander app to access the HDD, but once it is, it appears in the list fine. I can also then switch between SD card browsing and HDD browsing in TC without any problems.
I also tested the concurrent running of apps via SD Card while the HDD is mounted. I moved Firefox over to the SD Card. When I did this, the transfer process unmounted the HDD in the background. So, I had to remount via ExFAT/NTFS, but once done, it ran again without problems. I then concurrently ran Firefox and Total Commander together, switching between the two and found NO problems. Again, I can also switch from the HDD to the SD Card without problems.
Assuming that this is the required level of concurrent use (browsing HDD and using SD Card mounted apps at the same time), then I'd say that Sony must have fixed the problems. There has been a major update to both the Sony UI and to Google's Nougat since this thread was active.
Just to add, I've had several keyboards and mice running at the same time via the one USB hub, without crashes, which was pleasing, though completely pointless
Will try to run some controllers via the USB next.
I can not be read from USB keys otg on my Z5 compact.

I tried several memories but nothing to do.

The same key whit a tablet Z and a old Z1 compact work perfectly.

Have they "castrated" function because of micousb without flap for water?
Update
I find the Answer.
You must be activated every time the function by "connecting devices".
However I have noticed that when removing the USB is also temporarily removed the sd and applications on sd lock.
Create a shortcut for OTG
If you go to settings, device connection, usb connectivity, tips for connecting with a usb device, then press add button and you get a shortcut in the quick launch toggles.
Hey,
Sorry for uping the thread but I'm running 6.0 fw.163 and the option is missing...

You just have to put in the OTG and restart the Z5.
im using usb drive even harddrive via OTG on regular bases for backup , you need to go on connections , attached usb device
also mouse and gamepad will work, you can add shortcut to the top menu (where you can find wifi\bt etc..
you will also need FK file commander that come with the phone, or ES

In my Z5 Compact the USB OTG working if the SD card is not encrypted (option in Android Setting/Security/Encryption).
If not encrypted the USB OTG are working fine. (Note: Need to click the "Detect USB Device")
The 'Detect USB device' does not work always. Even restart does not do the job in my test with a OTG cable and a USB stic that are working well on a LG G2
Old thread but nobody is addressing this strange behavior anywhere. On my Z5 if the SD card is encrypted, the OS won't allow access to USB otg. Says a security policy is preventing usb. I must uncheck sd card encryption, remount the usb, and then recheck encrypt sd card before transferring files. It's extremely annoying .
i am having the same issues, OTG is not detecting not detecting
I have not encrypted the sd card, have you written to sony about that?
USB otg works everytime for me
BUT not with third party file explorer... ES file explorer never detects any removable drives...
I am on a XIAOMI MI BOX TV, US 2016 EDITION.
I manage to format the USB pendrive as "internal storage". I had to try several times as it was failing, but eventually I made it.
I can now move some apps manually to it (i need to browse each app one by one from the internal storage, then select the external drive. This is not available for all apps though, i dont know why).
But whn I try STORAGE> USB DRIVE> MIGRATE > MOVE NOW , i get a "Unfortunately, settings has stopped working.", and nothing happens.
Not a huge problem as I can still move manually most apps, but I still experience these issues:
I need to storage a large collection of emulator ROMs on the USB DRIVE, but in the current status I am not able to select the USB Drive in ES EXPLORER
Not all apps are movable to USB DRIVE, slowly filling the internal memory as the number of apps increases
I need to move manually the apps one by one
Any idea on how to solve the MOVE issue, or any workaround for the points below?
I am using a Lexar JumpDrive S45 usb 3.0 64 GB .
Previously I also used an old SanDisk 8GB. It formatted at first try, but gave the same MOVE issue.
USB debugging is OFF.
cheers!
I got the same error, any clue?
