Z5 Compact echoing in calls? - Xperia Z5 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
My z5 compact has issues when I talk on the phone to others, they can hear an echo for the first 30 seconds or so. I did some research and could see that others have the problem, but I remember having the same issue with my z3 compact and I fixed it by disabling the background noise suppression feature. I can't find that on the z5 and so I was wondering if anyone else has found a software fix to this issue? I really want to avoid sending the phone back to sony as they take their time with repairs!

Did you ever find a solution to this issue?

[Q] Xperia (U/P/Go) bluetooth headset distorton

I have a strange problem with Xperia Go phone and bluetooth headset. My voice is distorted in the direction to person whom I'm speking and I can not use the headset as daily use.
It seems like the microphone gain is set full-time maximum. If I talk quietly the sound is clear, but if I raise my voice it get distorted.
And this is not just me, some of Xperia (Go/U/P) phone owners report same problem in Sony Xperia™ support forum. For some strange reason, some users do not seem to have any problems?
I've tried three different Xperia phone and five different bluetooth headset device, all have the same problem. Other brand phones with headsets working as it should.
The same problem occurs with a stock ICS / JB and CM9.
How the headset microphone gain is adjusted, is there some mechanism for feedback from the phone? Does anyone here have the same problem?
I had this problem a while ago, Xperia U with Jabra CLIPPER, after using the "repair my phone" functionality in PCC, so contacted the customer support in Jabra and they told me to wait until the battery dies, then recharge, also to use it with Wi-Fi disabled, does not really make sense to me but noticed some improvements, finally sold it, and used a wired headset instead... sad but true...
I have also tried everything to fix the problem: wlan off, charging, screen off, repair phone and hf software, isolated phone to another room (to see if internal mic is active same time with bluetooth mic), tried every settings in audio.conf etc.
I have noticed that the "distortion threshold" depends on bluetooth device - the more expensive device (more sensitive microphone?) - more distortion.
Also, Jelly Bean brought little improvement in the situation, but it does not fix it completely.
Does anyone have an interest / skills to investigate the problem more? Is it possible to monitor messages on phone and the bluetooth device to see if the phone tells bluetooth device to set mic gain at maximum?
seems like my xperia go also having the same problem.. when using bluetooth headset, people cant hear my voice clearly, the mic too sensitive causing my voice distorted, and this problem only happen when using bluettooth headset. tried with a few different bluetooth headset and the problem still there.. any solution for so far? can this problem solve by sending phone to sony service center?

[SOLVED] Background noise reduction on call

Hi,
It seems to me that since the Lollipop update, the background noise reduction during calls is defective.
Indeed, if the option is enabled (Parameters/Calls), my voice is less and less audible for my interlocutor. If I disable the option, the voice is good.
Is this a problem with lollipop or my second microphone is dead?

this is problem as far as i know since jelly bean and im wondering why did they ever put sutch option when u cant even use it...yes i know when i turn it off its all fine when turned on, all calls become very low on volume and sometimes echo acures...theyx could or should solve this for once and for all but anyway not a big prob for me...i had xperia Z before and i think it somehow worked there but with the xperia Z2 NoiseCanceling is a bad... but with NC headphones i can confirm that i was talking on the phone while riding motorcycle and the caller on other side heard me like i was in some room without any wind noise or whatsoever...so it really works with NC HP and second MIC IS NOT DEAD...hope i helped u make solve that question.cheers
Thanx,
So I never had to activate this option before. And that's when I searched in the new lollipop menu I had the "wrong" idea to do so.

This happened to me on KitKat,. It only happens when you flash a different customization version.
I rooted the Z2 and flashed a Generic ROM from another country and the Noise Reduction broke and Lollipop I flashed the Baltic Generic version and here too the noise reduction breaks. When i revert back to my original ROM the noise reduction works perfectly.
I'll try when the update will ne available for my country.
Guys let's team up and send some complaing emails to Sony to fix this ****. I can't use that option and it's really useful sometimes.

Bluetooth audio stuttering

Hi everyone,
does anyone else also have problems with bluetooth audio? I'm using my z5c with two different audio devices (car stereo and a jbl bluetooth box) and the audio signal is stuttering quite often. I tried using different apps (so far Audible and Deezer) and with both I get the stuttering. When I disable and enable bluetooth again sometimes it works fine for a while and then it turns bad again. Most of the times the stuttering is back immediately after reconnecting. The same happens after restarting the app. When I'm switching to headphones or the internal speaker I don't have any stuttering at all.
Any ideas on how to fix this? If it stays with Android 6.0 I might have to send the phone in.

Had that happen a few times. Stuttering not related to distance or other apparent reasons. Also phone slows down like crszy sometimes. I think stock rom is plain ****.
Happens very often when using Garmin Fenix 2 with HR monitor in the same time. If the watch is to close to phone then sometimes I hear nothing - but I think it's Garmin's fault.
Doesn't happen at all in my case
I have not noticed any stuttering while connected to the Bluetooth in my car (Acura TSX) or my Homewerks Bluetooth speakers in my house.
This is CONSTANT for me while using a variety of bluetooth headphones/speakers. Usually if I pause the music for a moment, it'll stop doing it for a while. But it's driving me insane today. I do usually have the phone paired with a Moto 360 as well, but I haven't noticed a difference whether it's connected or not.
Strange. I use BT audio all the time with 3 different BT devices, and never experience stuttering. I do use a 3rd party player (GoneMAD Music Player), not sure if that is part of it.
I had this issue constantly with my Z Ultra, had no issue with my Z3 Compact, after ~4 months started having it constantly with my S6 Edge, and I noticed it twice with my Z5 Compact.
I think it's something Android related rather than something Sony-specific (and definitely not phone-specific).
I use it with a wireless Sony loudspeaker. My z3 compact never stuttered. My z5 compact (with the same speaker) does stutter a little, especially if i hold it. If it's on a table it is fine.

I don't experience stuttering at all, but I do however have the problem that the audio is too loud... Even on the lowest setting, audio through bluetooth headphones is almost too loud to listen to
Having connected the Z5 Compact to a Sony SBH-20 Bluetooth headset, I can confirm the stuttering issue. With music coming from Play Music the stutter happens sometimes and will not stop appearing until I stop and start the music. This also happens with navigation voices from Maps app.
Is this a Z5 Compact specific error or Android 5.x? My Motorola Razr i (4.4) never had this issue.

Not sure if this applies to every case, but the stuttering in my case I found out was due to accidentally touching or holding the phone near the fingerprint sensor.
What this generates is a music playback gap (no phone vibration or other sound, which makes hard to understand what is happening). Tested with bluetooth headphones, Sony AS600BT.
I am having all kind of issues using audio on Bluetooth devices... And I have to do the pairing again every time I want to use one of these devices. It never connects automatically. I don't know if the app Throw or Smart connect have something to do with it.
Is this issue commonplace? I regularly use several pairs of Bluetooth headphones to listen to music with my phones. I've never had an issue with any Android devices stuttering over Bluetooth (Not since the Droid X2, anyways.), so I'm concerned by this. I had a Lumia 950 XL that had the issue, but a replacement seemed to solve that.
Just wondering, as I'm expecting my Z5c to be delivered Monday. Sorry for the necro!
I have the same issue with my Sony Z5 Compact, Audio through Bluetooth was working perfectly fine before Android 6.0 Software update, since the update the audio is very choppy/stuttering quite badly, even if the bluetooth earphones/reciever (Sony SBH20) is sat untop of the phone, I have tried different recievers/earphones, tried turning all apps off, turning wifi off, switching bluetooth on/off etc tried different music apps... tried most things, it happens at home/office and happens outside too, so my guess it's a Sony Bluetooth issue that has been effected by the Android Update.
Stuttering/chopping badly here as well... Using BT to a 2016 Volvo. Especially if the phone is used at the same time, no matter the load.
Had no problem before Marshmallow.
it's interesting... the last 5.x update solved the problem on my phone and the marshmallow update didn't change the fact... have you tried to reflash the firmware?
Found a possible solution which at least works temporarily in my case. Stuttering didn't happen since I performed the following:

Hi everyone,
I resolved Bluetooth audio stuttering on my Z5 Compact by wiping the cache partition.
This can be done the following way:
1. Go to Home screen
2. Press and hold both keys 5 seconds : Power + Volume Up
3. The smartphone should vibrate 3 times when done, and shutdown
4. Power on
The issue should be fixed.
This works on my Z5 Compact, I hope this can help you too.

XA Ultra Dual microphone issues

Hello guys,
My XAU Dual showing microphone issues during making calls! when I make a phone call my friends keep complaining about barely hearing me (very low voice) or my voice is like someone talking in a deep tunnel with too much echo ..sort of that!
here are some things I tried to fix the issue but all failed to fix it:
1- I tried factory resetting my device
2- tried repairing my device software using Xperia Companion
3- tried disabling audio enhancement (ClearAudio+ ....etc)
4- in settings>call>SIM>Equalizer ...set to normal
5- tried looking for microphone noise suppression in settings.. can't find it
Didn't drop my device & never exposed to any fluids!!
Tho, I ran diagnostics>tested my microphone, one time I hear my voice good, then gave it another try later on & the microphone recorder a very low sound!!
Am really outta options here & this issue really sucks
My device model number is F3212, running android 6.0, build number 36.0.B.2.146.
Any ideas..
I've been experiencing this problem on two different XA Ultras. The microphone seems to switch to the one on the top of the phone so if you hold the phone upside down people can hear you. I've had to switch to speakerphone output to talk to people when this happens. Switching back to phone from speakerphone sometimes makes it work normally but not all the time.
I suspect it has something to do with an app that is running earlier, maybe google play music or OK google.
I have tried reset and it doesn't help. The problem comes back.
There is a similar if not identical issue on another Sony phone, the solution being to turn off microphone noise suppression. I haven't tried this.

I didn't notice that flipping the phone or switching to speaker output might work, gotta try it first.
What bugs me the most is the fact that I can't find anything related to disabiling microphone noise suppression at an section of this device settings!
Am using a headphone currently & waiting for Android nougat to hit the device & hopefully fix the issue.
This problem was never there when I first used my device out of its box, but later on it appeard after may be 2 upgrade patches of Android 6.0 few months later.
Waiting is my only hope...
