I am making this thread so people, as well as myself, can come up with a solution to unlock this model for gsm use without having to depend on the carrier. Any helpful advice or ideas would be appreciated!

First of all, let me say that I'm not trying to break any laws here. I am simply curious about some technical aspects.
Q: What kind of tweaks would be involved to make a CDMA phone from one carrier work with another CMDA carrier? E.G., A droid running on Sprint or an EVO on Virgin Mobile.
I started researching about this, but I can hardly find any info. Are unlocked phones not that popular anymore or do carriers just not support them?
From what I gathered, one would have to change PRLs, install new phone, telephony, and mms APKs, and probably change MEID/ ESN and possibly flash new radios and have an unlocked phone of course.
How close am I here?
TY in advance.

Unlocked phones are very popular but CDMA phones are not when it comes to unlocking. Ultimately you have to get the company to agreebto add the phone to its network which it has the right to refuse lt. You would need to change the ESN which is not legal anywhere and why you won't find the info on XDA.

Hi folks,
I'm just a noob and this is my first post and I'm really sorry if we already have any thread that can help (as I did try searching around).
I bought a HTC View 4G from US and Now I'm in India. Was just wondering if there is any Unlock Possible so that I can use 3G(CDMA/GSM) Networks here in India.
Another question, what does rooting means when it comes to View 4G ?
Thanks for all the reading.
Regards,
Rituraj

Is it possible guys, any help will do good.
The View is CDMA/WiMAX, so there's no way to "unlock" it in the traditional GSM sense for use on multiple networks. You'll either have to see if the CDMA carrier you wish to use will add it's IMEI number to their network and activate it (which many will not do), or you'll have to flash it for use on a different carrier. For either of those, you'll have to find someone locally who can help you out, because it will require access to the carrier's system (to add the IMEI number, and that will need to be done by the carrier) or certain carrier files (to flash it). There is no GSM radio in the View, so use on GSM networks is out of the question.
Rooting on the View means the same as rooting on any other Android device. You gain root access to the system. This allows for the modification and installation of various files/ROMs. Check out the View development section for more information on what is required and what you can do.
You can try contacting Reliance CDMA
hi Rituraj,
I am facing same problem with this device. I also bought it from USA. After doing some research, i think our cdma carriers (Reliance, BSNL, TATA) can program it to use this device in India. Moreover i also contacted Reliance & TATA, Reliance agreed to give a try on my risk whereas TATA denied for the same. So now i m planning to contact BSNL as well. Mean while if you can get any other solution do let me know.
I think, Thunderbolt can run any CDMA sim which is not from Verizon. My friends father have one and he unlock is from a phone service center with a huge amount of money. I called verizon, they said, its impossible to unlock carrier. But I think, its not impossible. So anyone know, how to unlock it? Any tool you know? Please give a tutorial. I badly need it to unlock.

Honestly, it is easiest to just get it unlocked from Verizon.
They should/will allow one-per-year per-user usually.
If you contact them and it can take escalating the call sometimes and let them know you intend to do some traveling, and would like to be able to use another sim while overseas, they "should" unlock it for you. (Hint: this doesn't make it sound like you are trying to switch it over for good.)
I have had this done before, but it was not a Thunderbolt.
I have seeen reports of others also getting the unlock code for the Bolt from Verizon.
Otherwise there are tutorials on flashing to Cricket and a few others I believe.
But that's a whole process other then just unlocking the sim...
In reference to THIS thread about unlocking the GSM to enable the use of a sim card from a US carrier, I was wondering if the phone works exactly the same once I actually switch it to GSM (mainly data) and does it depend on which carrier I switch to. I wonder which one would work best with this phone.
Well anyway I tried reading into the steps to make sure I understood before I even begin to tamper with it but im still unsure and nowhere near tech savvy and im sure I will find a way to screw it up. I was wondering if anyone can :fingers-crossed: OH SO KINDLY!! walk me through these steps or at least the parts I have major trouble with.. I would appreciate it.
I HOPE IM NOT ASKING FOR TOO MUCH.!! Any help at all would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

there are many threads on how to do this.. more than one and its not that hard... root,, unlock, and then flash japanese radio. If you have new 2.3.5 firmware you are out of luck until someone figures out how to unlock the bootloader. Bootloader MUST be unlocked before you can flash japanese radio.
How do I know which firmware I have?
What about data, will it work with an unlimited everything plan?

I have an HTC EVO Design (Kingdom) from Sprint. It is a hybrid CDMA/GSM world phone with a sim slot, but it is network locked to Sprint only in the US. I am wondering if I root this phone with a custom rom/kernel, will I be able to use it with any GSM carrier in the US?
Thanks for any responses in advance!
I've been doing a lot of searching around on this matter to try and figure this out on my own but haven't found the answer to my question, that's why I finally decided to make this thread here.
I've seen some threads about S-OFF and wondering if doing that to my Evo Design will enable it to work with US GSM carriers..
Any input is greatly appreciated.

Yes, you can. Sprint merely required a call [see their owners' manual], but Boost, FreedomPop or [Hero S] USCC require a sim unlock. I acheived this w/ a hardware tool [riffbox], but I'm sure there are other methods.

Rob
