Hey guys, did anyone encounter some problems when trying to wipe data/do a factory reset using the Cyanogen Recovery? After I updated from CM 12 to CM 12.1 I wanted to do a factory reset. Selecting "Wipe data" got me an error. Upon accessing "logs", I could find that it couldn't mount or find the volume /misc. Oh, and BTW, I can flash CM Updates just fine. I flashed some CM 12.1 compatible Gapps, but they are not working (Google Play Services/Store is not working). That's why I wanted to do a factory reset and then flash Gapps. What can I do now, in order to make it work again?
Anyone?

1. First from CM recovery, flash the recovery from HERE
2. Then reboot to recovery
3. Do the factory reset/wipes from the new recovery
4. Flash the new CM12.1 and gapps
The problem is with the new CM recovery, which doesn't work properly with our device. We can only hope the CM devs will sort it out in time
Let me know how you go

Is it possible to flash a new recovery via recovery? Never heard of this before.

You will actually be flashing an incompatible kernel, but because the kernel and recovery reside in the same partition in the S2, you are actually using just the recovery. If you try to reboot into the system, you will end up with a bootloop. So just flash the "kernel", reboot straight back to the new recovery, then flash what you need from this new recovery, then reboot to the new rom

Ok, I got it now. Partially. ) So, you're telling me that this "PhilZ recovery" is like a "temporary" one? I use it just to do the factory reset, flash the CM 12.1 and then flash Gapps?

Yes thats right. Use it as a tool to flash what you need. Once you flash CM12.1 you will overwrite philz with the CM recovery/kernel that is included in the .zip file you flash. Hopefully this won't be needed in the future

Ok, I'll try it and let you know how it went.
So, I followed your steps and everything went smooth as butter, but I can't flash the Gapps zip. I tried the recommended zip from CyanogenMod website and it outed this:
set_perm: some changes failed
E: Failed to install /sideload/package.zip" error in recovery.

I tried like, 7 Gapps packages (Pico and nano ones) and still, won't work. On some I get the "footer" error, for example. What can I do? Should I use the PhilZ recovery and do a "Full factory reset for flashing a new ROM?

Hello
GS2 already installed with cyanogenmod 10 + clockworkmod recovery 6.0.2.9, I wanted to install last cyanogenmod :
- cm-12.1-20150817-NIGHTLY-i9100.zip
- gapps-5.1-arm-2015-07-17-13-29.zip
Starting recovery, wipe data / factory reset , install cm zip, install gapps, reboot. --> getting endless cyanogenmod animated logo, the one which comes at boot.
After poweroff+ boot into recovery again, I was surprised to get the cyanogenmod recovery instead of clockworkmod.
I started a new wipe + cm install, but without gapps + reboot : success !!
After that, trying to install gapps from cyanogedmod recovery failed each time with following message :
finding update package
opening update package
verifying update package
installing update...
installing gapps
set_perm : some changes failed
E: failed to install /sideload/package.zip
E: please take note of all the above lines
installation aborded
was clockworkmod recovery 6.0.2.9 to old to proper install the last cyanogen ?
@sksbir
Yes you need to use a newer recovery. Try flashing one of the newer kernels for this device, reboot back to recovery, then flash rom and gapps

Thank's for your quick answer.
So let me resume the situation:
- my clockworkmod was too old, and CM 12 recovery have some problems.
- once CM12.1 is installed, recovery is overwritten with CM recovery.
- so each time you need to do a wipe/factory reset once CM12 is installed, you first have to
> boot to CM recovery
> install a "good" recovery like philz's one to overwrite CM recovery
> reboot again to recovery ( the philz's one )
> install CM12 from recovery
> install Gapps from recovery
> reboot
[Edit] done. Installation is now complete, ( with cm-12.1-20150819-NIGHTLY-i9100.zip and gapps-5.1-arm-2015-07-17-13-29.zip, using "install a new rom" within wipe/factory reset option of Philz recovery ) but I'm not sure it is successfull :
- stuck in startup wizard after signing up with google account. I had to ignore the step to complete the wizard
- no Google Playstore app . Other google applications are here.
I tryed to install the playstore from an apk extracted from my LG G2 ( with same gapps installed ), but once installed, crash immediately at launch.
- no bluetooth : crash the control panel. bug report sent to CM.
Maybe it's because I did not install properly the whole, maybe it's because the firm is still new and it's a nighty, although the same version run well on my LG G2.
If someone have an clue ? I will soon revert to an older CM if there is no issues. Previous installed CM (V10 snapshot, android 4.4 ) ran well.
[edit] : I will first replay the whole installation , but with [GAPPS][2015-04-04] Google Apps Minimal Edition for Android 5.0.x & 5.1.x instead of full Gapps.
I have moto e android 4.4 rooted stocked rom

flash twrp and select the appropriate options shown on screen.
Search for TWRP in MOTO E forum download it and flash it on your phone using minimal adb and fastboot.
next time when you'll boot into recovery, it will boot into TWRP (team win recovery project) instead of CWM. follow same steps - wipe EVERYTHING. flash rom, flash gapps and BAM.

Using twrp 2.8.5.0. But getting same problem in my xt1022 moto e. it stuck on bootloop of cm12.1.. What to do..??
after 2 months??
use latest version of TWRP 2.8.7.0
if it still bootloops you may need to flash cm11 first (can be found in ROMs section) let it boot and when it successfully starts then reboot to recovery and wipe everything and flash latest cm12.1
try It... many users have reported that this solution works for them
Ya...TRy First CM11 then CM12
Hello guys,
I wanted to flash Cyanogen 13.0 on my OPX. I followed the instructions on the Cyanogen-Downloadsite, but after flashing with TWRP I always stucking at the bootlogo....
I waited more than 30 min, but nothing happens... While flashing I get no errors or warnings.... It seems to be alright...
Then I tried another Marshmallow ROM, but I get always the same issue...
Thank you in adavance!
need more info dude, what rom were you before the issue presented itself ? recovery version ? data, cache & system formatted to which filesystem ? what did you wipe ? what all did you flash with or after the rom ?
hi
asuming u have opened bootloader and have installed twrp this is what i do
1.put the rom and gapps on the root of the phone storage
2. factory/data rest in twrp
3.flash rom via twrp
4.clean chache/delvi
5.flash gaaps
6.clean cache/delvi again
reboot system and im good to go try this do a full flash the way i have mentioned dont do a dirty flash
im sure u will succeed good luck
If you didn't unlock the bootloader then it will not boot anything other than the stock OS.
Hey you smart people
im driving NUTS
I installed a completely fresh new A11 stock rom and I lost my custom recovery.
This is my install procedere:
(fastboot)
-set SLOT B and install twrp
-then boot to TWRP recovery and Flash TWRP.zip again
-reboot to twrp recovery
-wipe Cache,system,Data
-flash Rom A11 STOCK 12.0.3.0
-flash SHRP
-reboot in SHRP again
Set SLOT A!
-Format Data
-Reboot to System
Boot into recovery. Nothing! Stuck on Adndroid ONE boot screen
What i'm doing wrong? Please help
Did you installed on slot "B" and set active on "A"?
This is the error, i think.
I thought Rom is always installed in the inactive slot. Netherles, where's the recovery gone..?
After all kind of flashes now SHRP is installed on slot A and image is installed on slot A.
And now I'm stuck on ne MI Logo and got bootloop.
Latest magisk is installed
EDIT:
Wiping Data + System
Boot into image possible! BUT no boot into recovery -.-
im really newbie in this case. But the latest stock rom A11 works with TWRP / SHRP and others? if anything goes wrong, just try flash stock withouth anything and wait a specialist user help.

Flashing Stock rom works. Latest TWRP and SHRP should both work on A11.
But i just dont get rom AND recovery to work properly on the same slot :/
EDIT:
Okay. I got some help in Telegram!
TWRP is NOT ready for permanent install!! <----
I did everything now this way:
1. first flash boot twrp in fastboot
2. install everything a need
3. back to fastboot and flash boot.img
thats the way for now
Glad that you found a way! now im searching how to downgrade stock 10 to 9 withoutg losing sensors. But im very newbie and need a guide like to explaind like im five.
Hello, I now have 8 days note 10 lite today I unlocked bootloader, installed TWRP via adb after that I installed lineage os and wiping data etc. After that I faced a bootloop and lineageos bootscreen doesnt go away after 15 minutes.
So I tried to reflash the rom again, but twrp isnt able to reinstall the rom. I then used miflash to get original rom again.
Started all over installed twrp, flashed lineage os after this install after reboot I get everytime back into TWRP and looked on my pc and all files suddenly are encrypted on my phone and cant get lineage os rom again on my phone..
So I used miflash again and decided to ask here first. Does anybody know if I maybe use a wrong TWRP or missed a step?
I really dont understand it, I tried it for a 3th time. Here is exactly what I did.
- installed TWRP through ADB (TWRP-3.4.0-0_Android11_Roms_AndroidHQ254)
- In TWRP put rom on my internal storage
- Wipe Dalvik, data and cache
- Install rom (TWRP-3.4.0-0_Android11_Roms_AndroidHQ254)
- data wipe (where I had to type yes to confirm)
- Reboot to system and then it doesnt do anything and goes back into TWRP where I cant do anything, and I have to flash original rom back through MiFlash.
I run now MIUI 12.0.2
Android 10
Try using orangefox recovery. And i think you have to wipe data before installing rom, not after it.
