Try to connect your device in recovery mode to PC
Use squid twrp latest recovery

If you can't access the files from recovery you will probably need to use Linux on a computer. You can run Linux in a virtual machine as long as it supports usb device passthrough to access your sd card reader -- I know that virtualbox supports this. You will need to pull the encryption key from /data/misc/vold. This site explains how to do it https://nelenkov.blogspot.com/2015/06/decrypting-android-m-adopted-storage.html

Get a separate USB thumb drive and use that to make your bootable install drive. Life will be far easier that way

I don't think so because I don't believe it's possible to boot your pc from the phone's sd card... well, at least not without hard bricking your phone. You can create a bootable windows 7 installation on a standalone external flash drive though.
I think you could do it. Just set it up the same as you would a usb drive. There are tutorials for this. Then connect to computer, mount usb storage, and boot to usb device on your computer.
why you would want to do this is another question

[Q] Is it possible to make a bootable sdcard partition?

Hi community,
I plan on buying a new 32gb sdcard for my Xperia ray. What i plan to do is letting the phone use most of the space on the sd card but creating a second partition for a different purpose.
The purpose is to use that partition just like a normal windows(ntfs or fat) usb disk and eventually making it bootable for PC's. I carry my usb stick with me that i made bootable via easyboot and installed the tools i need which i wanna get rid of if my phone has the same capabilities.
Questions are
Will a pc recognize that partition as a bootable device and eventually boot?
If yes, will i need to set anything on my android such as usb debugging etc. after connecting?
or will that partition be independent from the android partition? (i guess this is a low possibility since the partition is on the sdcard and that is mounted to the android os, but may be android calls the partition sdcard thus not hugging the second partition)
bump
can noone comment on that?
I think the app switch me can do this, but I'm not really sure how that app works.

I boot some of my boxes off of SD cards mounted in USB drive adapters, so I can tell you that it's possible, but I'm not sure about how android handles it.

Toggle USB/SDcard in recovery

i tried mounting ext sdcard in mounts/storage but the disk drive did not pop up on my mac's desktop. Does the S3 allow you to toggle USB in recovery? I think it would be a very important feature, especially if you can only boot into recovery.

You do not have a USB mount option in sgs3..you have a mtp transfer protocol..look for devices under the attached devices option in your pc ..

im not too fond about the mtp/ptp feature on the s3. atleast allow the disk drive feature in recovery. if recovery was the only option after a bad rom flash. for example bootloop, u can put in a new rom flash file into the sdcard thru recovery.

Or you can just adb push it through recovery, just as easy!

The feature not being there is not based on some sort of sadism but technological constraints.
The internal storage is one big block, so you'd mount access to the phone's system partition too. However that is only a minor problem compared to the issue that the phone uses the Linux-filesystem EXT4 which neither OsX/BSD nor Windows are capable to access.
For the external storage, it's possible if the corresponding features exist in the kernel, Easy UMS is such an application.
I reckon you can do it manually though the based shell commands (I published them somewhere here, Easy UMS links to the thread)
if you want mass storage in recovery.

[Q] How to mount a windows folder inside an Android filesystem over USB?

Hello,
I need Android to treat a Windows folder on my PC as part of its filesystem. Why? Because I'm using dd to create an image of the internal memory of my Nexus 4, and I don't have enough free memory on my device to store the resulting image (the internal memory can't store an image of itself!). I want the image to be directly written on my computer over USB. I'm using Cyanogenmod 10.2.1, have adb installed on the PC and various unix tools on the device (coming with CM apparently).
Please help.
What you are asking is impossible but if you want to backup directly to pc ,it is possible. You may need a rooted phone. (This is not my guide) I am just referring.

Thanks!

do a little search about hot to connect to PC drive using ES explorer.
Share drive in PC -> Go to LAN in ES explorer -> Search and connect to the PC -> Copy the folder from mobile to PC folder.
or try using AirDroid.
MTP mode spoils the fun!
