Apologies for the very basic questions.
I have a Moto E that I would like to return to stock so that I can give it to my mother-in-law and she can accept OTA updates, etc without problems. I previously rooted it and put a custom kernel/TWRP on it but it was a while ago and I don't remember what I did or what to do to put it back to the factory defaults.
At present I know the following:
Hardware SKU: XT1524
Android version: 5.0.2
Baseband: M8916_200608.02.58.15RSURNIA_EMEA_CUST
Kernel: 3.10.49-g277f185-00003-gc8b64ee [email protected] #1
System: 22.41.53.surnia_retgb.retgball.en.GB retgb
Build number: LXI22.50-53
How important is the baseband version? Somewhere along the line I have downloaded a recovery image in a zip file called:
XT1524_RETGBALL_MOTOE2(4G)_5.0.2_LXI22.50-13_cid7_subsidy-DEFAULT_CFC.xml
This has a list in if of factory version info that doesn't quite match what the phone says. In particular the baseband version is M8916_200601.02.02.5801R and the "blur version" is 22.31.13.surnia_retgball.en.GB. Is this totally the wrong thing? If it is suitable, can someone point me back to the idiot proof instructions for flashing this?
Thanks if you can help. It seems that I've completely forgotten everything I leaned about this process.

Hi All,
YES I did do a search (actually several searches)
and YES I did do a bit of reading before deciding to post this.
Things I'd like to accomplish by rooting:
1.) Get rid of T-Mobile junk (and there's a LOT of it!)
2.) Install Arabic support (haven't figured out how to do that yet)
3.) MAYBE overclock (haven't figured out how to do that yet)
I would like to root this T-Mobile (U.S) version of the SG2. However, none of the posts seem to match the kernel number, firmware, or even model number as listed on the phone (see below)!
In order to avoid bricking the phone, I wanted to see if someone has managed to do this, and if s/he can direct me to the correct method/post to do this.
Here's what "About Phone" lists:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Model Number: SGH-T989
Android version: 2.3.5
Baseband version: T989UVKID
Kernel version: 2.6.35.11 (no letters after the number!)
Build number: GINGERBREAD.UVKID
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Can someone please help idetify which recovery, kernel, and (if applicable) ROM I should be using?
Thanx

In caps for emphasis: THANK YOU
Greetings! I've recently acquired an unwanted Motrola Atrix 4G and I'm wanting to upgrade it to the latest version of Android. Here's the tricky part - it's a Canadian (BELL) phone with an inactive SIM, and I'm not too sure what has actually been installed on it.
As far as I can tell, the previous user has 'Greyblurred' the device (See Here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1070076) and flashed it with the custom SBF linked in the thread.
How would I go about updating the phone to Gingerbread? Is an OTA update possible without bricking it?
I should mention that this is my first smart phone, though I quite familiar with the terminology and it's applications. Just a nudge in the right direction would be fantastic.
Here's the system information, if it's of any help:
Code:
System Version: Version 4.2.1.1.MB860.Retail - Blurred
Model Number: MB860
Android Version: 2.2.2
Baseband Version: N_01.92.00R
Motorola Webtop Version: OSHWT_U1_6.54.0
Kernel Version: 2.6.32.9

SMP PREEMPT Thu Apr 28 22:58:25 CST 2011
Build Number: OLYEM_U4_2.1.1 - GreyBlurred
Thank you kindly in advance - any help is appreciated!
So it's been almost a year and I figured I'd give this a bump rather than create a new thread. Does anyone have even a whiff of a suggestion? Thank you kindly, in advance.
Okay, I must say I'm quite surprised. Even after almost a year you still haven't been able to research this on your own?
This forum is crammed with various detailed tutorials and guides, that should be enough to get anyone started...
The most obvious first step would be to determine if the phone shows "Unlocked" while booting and/or has a custom recovery installed.

The phone does not say unlocked. However, it does have CWM installed.
I have read through every tutorial. The issue isn't determining how to get the phone flashed to a newer ROM, it's the fact that it has a unique SBF's on it, and I am unable to receive OTA updates (though that's obvious). I'm wanting to simply upgrade it to the newest version without bricking it.
Since it dealt with flashing an SBF that has since been unsupported, I figured I should ask first, before going ahead and fiddling on my own.
Also, it being a BELL model it all the more frustrating!
(And, I am unable to take it to a BELL service store/send it in etc. since I am in Sweden.)
You have CWM. You have absolutely no need to touch a SBF ever again.
Just flash a ROM through CWM. There is no way to brick the phone that way.
All CWM-flashable ROMs work on all devices.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 I-9100M originally purchased from Bell. I rooted the phone using Odin. That was my first time rooting and I must admit, I kind of took blind faith in the instructions without actually taking the time to understand what's going on. In any case, everything has been working fine (except the GPS lock takes forever).
However, I would really like to see some improvements in battery life... and I heard that Gingerbread v2.3.6 has improvements from previous versions. I don't want to go to ICS because I've heard it's slow, etc. Below are the details from my phone:
Android version: 2.3.3
Basebad version: I9100MUGKG2
Kernel version: [email protected] #2
Build number: GINGERBREAD.UGKG2
Can anyone help me understand the above? Since the kernel version says 2.6.3, does that mean I am already on it? Eventhough the OS version says 2.3.3? Sorry if that's a totally ignorant question...
I had some troubles with my S3 i9300 with constantly freezing, after investigating about it I decided to install a custom rom with a newer android version than what I had at the time.
Now I can't remember which rom I installed and I want to update to a newer version, after reading in some of the rom install instructions, it mentions some requirements that to tell you the truth, I don't understand about them, or I don't know if my phone has them. I do remember that I installed using the custom recovery menu.
So the question is, can I install a custom rom in my phone? Right now I'm interested in the latest version NeatROM, here is my phone info:
Model: GT-I9300
Android: 4.2.2
Baseband: I9300XXUFME7
Kernel: 3.0.31-702147

Thanks for reading.

Just download the ROM you want to install.. Put it in your sd card.. Reboot to your recovery.. Make a backup of your rom and efs... And flash the latest 4.3 Sammy rom anyone you are interested in.. but remember to flash a modem for your region during installation.. In case of neat rom you will have that option in aroma installer itself... so ya go ahead and perform all these steps most important of which are backing up efs and your rom...
Sent from my GT-I9300
Standard method put new rom on ext sd card .
In recovery format system data cache and sd card .
Flash custom rom via recovery .
Thanks for the responses, I did it like that and everything is working ok.
Spoke too soon, data over the mobile network is very slow, I'm restoring the backup.

Samsung gave up on that device long ago. Luckily the developers here did not. You should look into upgrading via a custom rom like CyanogenMod.
Basic steps go as follows:
Backup everything and save to the PC
Decide if you want to focus more on stability (JB roms) or cutting edge (KK roms)
Move rom zip you chose to the SD card along with the appropriate Google apps package
Install a custom recovery that will work with the kind of rom you want to install
Boot to recovery, make a backup, wipe everything needed, and install the rom and Gapps
*Probably have to install an updated modem depending on the rom you choose*
Reboot and enjoy
You'll find everything you need in the Epic 4g forums here on XDA. Make sure to peruse the Stickies found in the General forum and Developer forums.
