Cracked my screen on my rooted S4 which was running Hyperdrive and was given a friend's old S4 that has 5.0.1 on it. I rooted with Kingoroot and I'm still running the stock rom, which I don't have a problem with. I would like to use my phone as a hotspot by hitting the hotspot icon but I have Verizon's unlimited data plan and when I click on the icon it says I'd have to pay a subscription fee. I can use FoxFi but I don't like dealing with the extra step - just wondering if there's a way to easily fix this by flashing a module or if it really requires a full rom flash. I haven't even looked into custom roms that run 5.0.1, but I really don't mind the stock one. Flashed the OF1 tether module but still getting the subscription screen. Any advice?

So I would like to use wifi tethering with my Nexus 10 that I plan to get soon and I would prefer not to have to add the plan to my account. I know that people used to use FoxFi but I heard that doesn't work with JB anymore (I'm on the newest update 3.16.651.3 from 1/31).
And if there is an app or program out there that will do this for free do I have to be rooted? Cuz I figure I would have to be. And on that note. How would I root and stay totally stock without losing OTA's and such. Is there even a way? I don't want a custom ROM or anything at all just the ability to tether my wifi for free.
Any help will be greatly appreciated thanks.
Yes you have to be rooted to use WiFi tether or native hot spot. WiFi tether requires root access for the app. The native hotspot requires a build prop tweak/hack. You can find more info here.

You can root the stock ROM. Check the threads in the dev sections. By zedomax and by regaw_lienad . You Dont even have to flash a custom recovery, I believe (that way you can still take OTAs). Really, your best bet, I think, is root and get custom recovery and flash one of the stock rooted ROMs posted in the dev section.
From my Evo LTE, yup.
Thanks guys so if I just root my stock ROM and don't flash a custom recovery I can still take OTA updates no problem? Cuz that's what I want. And as for that MOD is that for using my hotspot app or for boosting my 3G by removing the proxy. Cuz as a matter of fact that proxy reset thing (by typing ##3282# and setting all the HTTPS settings to 0) because I saw online that it will boost the often very 3G slow speeds of my EVO.
And is there a specific app that I would need to download afterwards to use? Or could I use the native Hotspot app after? Sorry for all the questions guys but I am just very curious about this and I greatly appreciate all the help.
Yup if you just root your stock rom without flashing a custom recovery you should be able to accept ota's without any issues. However if your rooted and accept and ota then you more than likely will loose root. Also by accepting an ota you take the chance of permanently loosing the ability to gain root or achieve s-off. Also that mod is for the native hot spot to work. No app needed. The speed up 3g mod is a sperate from this I believe.

Seriously, just unlock bootloader and install custom recovery. Then flash a stock rooted ROM from here. And when there is an OTA update, you will be able to find a rooted version of THAT here as well. Our devs keep us up yo date,... even for those who prefer stock.
From my Evo LTE, yup.
This is odd, but I'm stock, not rooted. S-OFF'd, but locked. And I have the most up-to-date version. And when I use the Sprint HotSpot application, it doesn't give me the error that I need to have the plan, it just connects, acts like it's allowed to use it, but just drops the 3G over and over again, and never connects to anything on my Galaxy Tab. It should throw back the error saying I don't have the plan, right?

Yeah that's what it always does. That's what mine does too and I'm 100% stock nonrooted and S-on
Am having trouble un-rooting MK2 for warranty work and could use some pointers.
Here's the problem: I'm not getting 4G/LTE signal, even in dense urban areas.
I think I need a new SIM, which will entail a trip to the Verizon Store, which means un-rooting.
I recently upgraded to a Galaxy S4. I have Unlimited Data, so I did the upgrade on another line, then used my existing SIM from my Galaxy Nexus to activate. It seemed to work fine.
Then did the following:
• Rooted
• WiFi Tether hack
• Installed Xposed and Wanum to remove custom boot screen
So I read the various un-root threads. This seems the most useful:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2578209
but I'm concerned about the warning about losing the Loki Exploit and not being able to re-root.
If I ODIN the factory image, will I still be able to root it without Loki?
Other threads recommended a full-reset, which I did from stock recovery. Afterwards, I am still rooted and the Custom boot screen still appears.
So, how can I get back to a factory state to get a new SIM and then still be able to re-root?
Being able to use SafeStrap would be nice, but my main requirements are Root and WiFi tether. I can live with Nova Launcher over stock TouchWiz. I backed up the customized image in TiBu so I'll be able to restore once re-rooted.
Thoughts?

Don't worry about any of this. I just did this few weeks ago. They don't care about your phone status as far as custom goes for a new Sim Card. Alls they do is put it in and power it back up. And your good.
As far as the other things you said.. If you're on MK2 build then nothing to do with Loki applies to you.
Anyways..... You're going to be just fine.

By the way... I went into Verizon running a custom recovery and a AOSP ROM. Your on mk2 which is still Stock TW. All the menus and settings are the same. They are not in a AOSP ROM like mine was.
The Verizon people were actually jealous of my phone .
Its when you send your phone in for an insurance claim that you want to do what you originally asked about.

I am retiring my Samsung Charge which is rooted and using a custom Rom. I have used odin and am familiar with most aspects of the charge process. I have also been reading through the many posts and because of the dating, and basebands, I am somewhat confused as to what I am sure is just a simple process.
My new S4 from Verizon will arrive tomorrow. I have no idea if it has the latest OTA installed or not 4.4.2.
My goal is to have an updated (latest OTA) phone with root and wifi tethering. Ideally, I would like to have the latest OTA for functionality, but also install a debloated rom with a few basis apks....tether is a must.
From what I can tell....
1) take new phone and update via OTA to NC5
2) download and install Towel root
3) install SuperSU
4) install Titanium Backup.
5) install working wifi tether ...foxfi
6) remove or freeze bloat ware
7) Done
IF I can get to this end result quicker ( say a rom with tether, root, debloated, but still stock 4.4.2 base) that would be my preference.
I use my current phone with tether for Internet access, so it is vital I get that running first.
Thanks
Your new phone should already come with 4.4.2 on it. I bought my phone in May of last year and my phone just started acting up so I asked them for a replacement. It came with 4.4.2. If its on verizon your build will be NC5. I think you pretty much have it down for what you want and need to do. If by chance you start romming then you will need Safestrap, Busy Box, and Towel root with SuperUser. I have used FoxFi for tethering alot for work so your good.

Is there a debloated, rooted, version of the OTA NC5 available?
I would prefer to just use odin, load the above mentioned rom which has all the bloatware out of it, and then root, tether, etc as necessary.
It would save me time by not having to debloat the factory OTA NC5.
No. All we have is SS and a few rooms for it. To get tether you will need safe strap and use one of the methods for unlocking tether.

After rooting I used SQLite Editor to turn off entitlement check so I can use the stock Wifi Hot spot app. I used it for years with my Droid Razr Maxx and now for a couple of months on my S4. I haven't found a wifi tether app better than the stock one.
How do you do that?

So I have a Verizon SCH i545 S4 running Android 5.0.1 with VRUGOF1. I've learned that is version has a locked bootloader so custom roms like Cyanogen are completely off the table for me. I'm not so much worried about that but I really want to be able to basically do 2 things: remove bloatware and use xposed with the Notifyclean module to get rid of those freaking "Wifi is available" and "Location set by GPS" notifications. I was able to do this before I foolishly upgraded to 5.0.1., but now I can't.
So far I've been able to root my device by doing the OC1 Odin flash, then Wondershare. Got Supersu, got busybox, and was able to use Flashfire to install stang5litre (thinking that xposed would work on it. It doesn't). So after all that preamble, my question is how can I install a different rom like Hyperactive? I've read that you can install other roms, as long as they're Touchwiz compatible, and according to the Hyperactive release notes, it comes with xposed. But all the instructions I have read talk about installing it with a custom recovery, which I can't use since I have a locked bootloader. I tried flashing it with Flashfire just to see if it worked, and softbricked my phone, forcing me to reinstall the stock rom over Odin, and go through all the rooting stuff all over again.
Also, I have tried installing and using SafeStrap but it won't work on my phone. It boots into the Safestrap: Disabled screen with the two buttons on the bottom to start normally or go into recovery, but no matter what I press, the screen goes blank, the phone vibrates, and it just boots normally. I cannot get into the recovery function.
Is what I want possible? Is there any way at all to just get a Verizon Galazy S4 with the VRUGOF1 locked bootloader to accept xposed? Everything I've tried so far has failed and/or forced me to totally reset everything and start over. I just want to get rid of those damn persistent Google notifications.
Check out albe95's s6 rom
I've been running his s6 rom for about a month, and it's great. After turning all of the s6 edge functions off, it runs like a dream. I was able to install xposed and change all the stuff I wanted. Good luck.

I have the same base unit as you and was running xposed on Stang5litre v2 just fine. There are several versions of xposed out there and only one of them worked for me. I'm pretty sure this was the one... https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23991606952607509
I'm not running xposed now - only because I just like to keep things simple and would rather live with a few limitations than loading up mods that may give problems
I am running @stang5litre 's v3 with Xposed working perfectly fine. In your subject of the thread... you mention "hyperactive"
.....do you mean Hyperdrive ROM?

I agree, you should check out the galaxy s6 rom. I've been able to get xposed working well also. But are you sure you're flashing the right version of xposed? Try searching in the comments to see if anyone else had that problem and which exact version to use. (Despite this being a reply to hooks024;64804157's comment it is obviously directed at the maker of the thread).
maybe i've missed it tried searching high and low. I have a verizon s4 4.2.2. Build KOT49h.I545VRUF NK1. T mobile needs 4.4.4 and verzion never made 4.4.4 or it was quickly pulled i havent fount it i get everything except lte it shows up on the phone but when i connect to google i get a DNS error T-mobile told me they are up to 4.4.4. upgrading to lolipop will **** up everything. I know I have seen a caynogen mod that is 4.4.4 for verzion so all i need is root. has NK1 been hacked. towelroot wont work, Super su is just blocked from knox
My only idea and SO i heard is to use ADB and connect and delete knox one at a time all files. then downgrade, I tried ADB but my phone wouldnt connect dont know if I did something wrong but this "world phone" give me lte bars with t-mobile but i cant get lte without root or 4.4.4. phone and text is ok havent tried mms but because its tied to data I doubt it would work any advice or help for this old device? :good::crying:

Verizon's 4.4.4 was nc5. You can not go back to Cyanogen mod. Your best bet is to go to Stang's LP ROM, since that is lolipop.
note: I am on nc5 4.4.4
