Why do 32GB boxes only have 26GB of Flash storage? - Android Stick & Console AMLogic based Computers

I have a 1GB/8GB Android TV box which is fine but stutters sometimes when playing video from a USB stick so I started looking into buying a 3GB/32GB box and ordered one but when it arrived, I discovered that it only has 26GB Flash storage - it clearly said (I've since returned it) in the device settings that there was a total of 26GB. I checked the other box and that has a total of 8GB and videos and screen shots I have seen of 16GB boxes show that they have what they claim, 16GB yet all the evidence I have seen so far seems to indicate that 32GB boxes only have 26GB.
I don't understand this at all. If there was some overhead which was required by the OS, it would eat into 8GB and 16GB devices too, surely, and proportionally more so.
Anyway, I just ordered a Docooler M9S which I already know will only be 26GB - the 3GB RAM is more important to me and I will just have to accept the discrepancy. I am registering in advance because I am hoping to uncripple it when it arrives by following and joining another thread on that topic.

Forgive my unashamed bump of this thread but has nobody else noticed this?
And if so, is nobody else curious?

The reason is because the OS and any installed apps take up space. They take the 32G and split it up into a few partitions. Assume 1-4G for the android install and any "system" packages that come preinstalled (which includes the installed apps and the apks to install them again when you factory reset). Then some of these have a swap partition of 1-2G. You have the cache partition and then the "data" partition (the one you are seeing as 26G).

That might make sense if it also applied to my 1GB/8GB box or the screenshots I have seen of 2GB/16GB boxes, but it doesn't; they have 8GB and 16GB total and my 1GB/8GB has almost 8GB available.
Also, as I mentioned, it quite clearly says 26GB total, not available. And there are no other partitions visible by any of the utilities I have installed. I would take a screenshot or two but the M9S box I have has the ability to take screen shots disabled.

AT&T HTC One 64GB - Can I use the whole 64GB for Apps and Data ?

Is there some kind of partition in the 64GB Data that will not allow me to use the full 64GB for Apps ?, how much of the 64GB is left ?, after Android and System apps are configured, meaning after the first boot?, thanks
As I recall, there was only about 55 GB and some change available for storage on my 64 GB One before I started putting my stuff on it. Some of that space is taken up by Android and Sense and the rest with Google Apps and AT&T's crapware. About the same percentage was on my One X when I has it and even a Nexus has some taken up, (but a smaller percentage of) it's storage taken up by system apps so that's just par for the course. Think of it like a "C:" drive on your computer - it may be advertised as 1 Terabyte, but you know that the OS is on there at least so you're never going to see that whole amount usable by you.
I store lots of music and pictures on mine plus some high memory games (Dead Trigger, Contract Killer 2) and I still have 25 GB left so I'm not bothered at all by the fact that some of the memory is used for the system.

[Q] System memory requirements

Hi to all you knowledgeable people. Some assistance and general clarification would be great on this, please.
The story starts with my wife's phone. I don't think that the model etc is important for this question, but it is an LG F60 (or something like that) and it is nearly new. The phone only has 4GB of memory so I made sure that I bought a good size SD card to go with it and I have set the OS to use the card for all media files. This seem to be working as all photos and music etc. are on the SD and there is nothing memory hungry on the internal mem. She has had the unit for a week or so and added perhaps 3 apps + those that were there as part of the out of the box config and now the thing is full - really! So I have a look at the memory usage and see - total 4GB - some apps and some bits and bobs 1.4GB - 'other' 2.44GB. When you drill down 'other' is almost all something called ‘system data’. So the first and simple question is this - does the android OS really need ~2.5 GB out of the box with little use, or have we done something wrong / ill advised? [BTW there are no backups locally, they are remote through a google account]
I connected the device to the PC to try to diagnose the situation. So the Internal storgae is reporting 60MB free of 1.32GB. This implies that 1.32 is all that we had to play with at all which would point towards the fact that the other 2.44 is correct for the OS. There is a folder called android which has ~25MB of data in it but nothing sizable elsewhere on the viewable internal storage space.
Out of interest I have connected a 7" android tablet to the PC to see if this reports the same sort of usage. This is showing 4.3 free from 5.5 total. This is an 8gb device so again this would suggest that 2.5 is used for system, which supports my initial fears.
If it does take 2.5GB just to provide a UI then is it wise or ethical for manufactures to sell devices with this little memory. Who would have thought that we would be suffering from memory issues in 2014 when a 32GB SD costs the price of a sandwich and a drink. I really am struggling with this whole concept. I mean an Ipad cost a lot of money and yet you have to choose to get the one with 32GB rather than 16GB even though the difference probably costs the company literally pence (if anything) - what is going on? My son had to remove loads of things from his ipad to even update the OS to the latest version - it just all seems soooo very crazy to me. With 4GB memory these phones are coming to the market and they are barely fit for purpose. You can buy a laptop these days (for not too much, a few hundred at most) and basically you can just sit and chuck data at it for years before you have any storage problem. Yes - I do understand the dif between a hard disk and RAM (it is called something else now I guess), but even so, these whole tablet industry is seriously flawed by this design limitation IMO. To add to this fact that it is made difficult to transfer data to and from ipads (less so android I realise) and they don't have an expansion slot, their popularity seems a fantastic mystery to me.
Anyway rant over - can somebody help me to understand the phone issue and how I might go about moving the OS onto the card or something of that kind which might improve the situ.
Thanks,
I have the same problem with this phone.

[SOLVED]Help with identifying my birthday present!

Hello everyone,
I recently acquired a 7" tablet from my parents as a birthday present, and I have a niggling problem with it, but first I need to properly identify it.
Help me identify it
I know it is an Archos, it was bought from Argos in the UK, branded as an ALBA 7" Tablet. Using CPU-Z I see it is an Archos, but I can't identify exactly which model. The Board is listed as an AC70PLV2, it uses a MediaTek MT8127 chipset. Can anyone tell me exactly what Archos model it comes under? Cobalt? What Gen is it? If I Google AC70PLV2 only the Argos page comes up, no other results.
My issue
It is running Android 5.0.1, I have inserted a 16GB SD card, and there is NO Move to SD option, anywhere for apps. It only has 8GB of storage, 4.23GB of it is used by Firmware, leaving me with only 3.72GB usable after disabling all non-removable bloat. If I cannot move game data to the SD the tablet is useless to me and I'll have to regrettably ask my mum to take it back. I saw on some forum that if I go into Storage in Settings, then click Apps, then the three dots at top right, there should be a Storage Preferences option allowing me to change default storage to SD, but there isn't, only "Sort by Name", and "Reset App Preferences".
Installing games like GTA, SBK 14, and the new Android Tomb Raider temple run style game, all make the data be installed on internal memory, and as far as I can tell there is no emulated SD on it. There appear to be folders on the external SD for the games, but it isn't using them, it's using internal.
I've come from an Ace 2 phone which had Cyanogen 10.2 custom ROM, everything was perfect with it, and all big apps could be moved, as I swapped the storages around on it. Is there a Custom ROM for my tablet that I can do the same? I'd take screenshots but don't think this stock thing has the option. It's a cracking tablet, just this one issue for large games is a dealbreaker. I can run videos, pics and music off the external SD just fine. My dad's Galaxy S5 is running Android 5.0, his has a Move to SD option, and that's with stock TouchWiz
Anyone that can help I thank you so much. I don't want to demean myself having to ask my mum to take it back I have a feeling Archos have nobbled it, but that's crazy as it only has 3.7GB usable. One final thing is I DON'T want to be using 3rd party move to SD apps. This option has been built into Android for as long as I remember, why it's missing now I don't know.
Hello,
This tablet has to be an Archos Platinum 70.
This id matches in the build.prop of mine, altough both ac70plv2 and ac70pl3 appear, the latter being used as a model id for OTA updates, so I suspect I might have a newer revision.
Otherwise, the two tablets look like clones based on what I can find on the Alba-branded one.
This tablet boasts Archos' new trick called "unified storage", where space provided by an external SD card is supposed to be merged with internal storage, transparently making it bigger.
Obviously this doesn't seem to work this way on yours. DIfferent firmware version?

Thankyou lannig! I was curious about the unified storage, but no it doesn't seem to work. It appears to treat them the same, but once the internal is filled the "Insufficient storage" error keeps coming up, not giving me the option to use the external. Archos have just updated their website, and the Platinum 70 is indeed the same one as mine, I hunted for hours on their site and it wasn't there before. Sadly I've decided to ask my mum to see if she can get me a 16GB tablet, but it's nearing the 30 day limit, she doesn't have the money just yet, so I may end up stuck with the Platinum. A real shame, if it had 16GB internal storage it'd be perfect, but 8GB is the only option they offer for this model.
Well, if you're a very, very daring soul, you may want to try applying the OTA firmware update meant for the Archos Platinum 70.
It can be found at http://update.archos.com/AFMv1/storage/files/full/ac70plv3/20150723.065346/update-from-archos.zip
You'll have to install it from stock recovery.
Since I suspect there might be subtle hardware differences between the Archos-branded model and yours, there's a significant risk of bricking it. You have been warned.

Thanks again Lannig, although there's no need for that, as today my tablet was replaced, and I am one HAPPY bunny! I've received the 8 Inch Bush Spira B1 32GB (An Archos AC80DPL) as a replacement, and it has the default storage switch option that the Alba was missing, so now I have 64GB of switchable space including my SD card! I KNEW someone had crippled that cheapo Alba!
You've been wonderful with your advice, thankyou ever so much for taking the time to help me, I really appreciate it, and will do the same for you if I ever see you needing rescuing from a disaster, SuperNerd James to the rescue!
Well, thanks for the feedback. Glad to know that it turned out this way for you
And you're quite welcome.
Didn't realize that these Archos tablets were being sold rebranded under so many different names abroad...
Bush Spira 8" 32 GB
That's weird. I've got the same Bush Spira tablet as you but I don't have the option to combine the internal and external memory. In fact, the opposite is true. I can't write anything to the external micro sd card at all, seems like they nobbled this one too, obviously after you got it.
What is your firmware version? Seems like I've got a different version.

OK...you offered...I am thinking about purchasing the Huawei Ascend XT. In the specs (phonescoop) I noticed 16Gb internal storage with 8.4 "open" usage. That's 7Gb of factory installed bloatware? #1. Other than the Nougat O.S. could most of the bloatware be SAFELY removed #2. In asking that...is most of the bloatware Google and google support services?

let me know what u want removed on it and i can see if its safe to remove did u buy the phone or gonna buy it my swift n fast rom b170 runs the best something on b180 has bad battery drain so if u get it u can use my rom and if u want it customized or me to make u one customized let me know

I haven't bought the phone...yet. I'm in need of a new phone and it's just one of 3 o r 4 I'm considering. Doesn't almost 3 Gb's of bloatware seem like and awful lot? It does to me. One other item of question: I noticed and it very much caught my attention, in the specs it states: FM Radio-YES. Is this an FM receiver (local FM radio) or just Internet Stream FM?

i dont use the fm turner app i remove it from my roms or least my phone my roms have pretty much all the bloat removed that i could find im still working on new one will be a bit the phone is nice just when we finally get a working dev tree etc we will have custom roms the phone has same hardware as honor 5x i do believe the rr port i did where wifi was broke the phone runs fast so im trying to fix the wifi for it for temp if i can if not im still working on my new rom
It's a FM receiver which requires wired headphones to be connected as the wire functions as an antenna too.

Hey Madvane20.
I'm using stock ROM on B170. My phone only has 8.55GB of internal storage available. From the advertised 16GB. I only have 0.44GB left. I really don't have much on my phone. But as a result of low storage I can't have all the apps and games on my phone that I want.
.how can I expand the internal storage to be more like the 16GB as advertised. What's the highest amount you have available on your phone? Do you have more than 8.55GB on your ROM? If you do how much and link to ROM plz.
Because as you know we can't install aps on the SD card. Or do you do that?
Thanks
Uninstall apps you don't need that take up internal storage, use the storage manager to clear apps caches, move data including music, pictures and videos to micro SD, set apps to store their data in micro SD where possible. Can't do anything else that I am aware of. I usually have 1GB free internal storage after doing this and have to do it regularly.

RE: Madvane 20
First, you need to know that no matter what, there was never 16Gb of memory. They (all electronic storage) "say"-advertise 16gb (or 8 or 2 or 64...etc) but in actuality there is only the nearest binary unit number closest to 16Gb. 16 Gb is actually 16.384 Gb or 16384 Mb.. Got you confused? OK, all storage is designated in "bytes" (one unit of storage) and bytes use the binary system when computing their size/storage capacity. Therefore an "advertised" 16Gb is only actually just slightly more than 15.9 Gb. If your not sure what I'm saying, use a conversion chart for Mb to Gb (or vice-versa) and remember that your dealing in the "binary" code. Then , on top of that, manufacturers set aside a certain number of "sectors" to account for bad/defective sectors that may occur when manufactured. Thus, it would not be unusual for 16Gb to actually only be about 14.7 Gb (or so) of actual usable storage space. Example...I have a "16" Gb pendrive that has 14.5 Gb of "actual" storage capacity on it. If the doesn't make sense to you, look up "How electronic storage works" (google-bing...etc..) Next, look up just how much "space" the O.S. on you phone occupies. Then, after deducting that number from the "actual" storage capacity, you'll be able to determine just how much "bloatware" you may have on the phone and you can -CAREFULLY- start eliminating some of those apps. This will open more "storage space" for personal use, (Mb's) on the phone. One last thing...you can put apps on an SD card. Now, that said, SOME SD cards are not "compatible" with certain phones and that may prevent you from being able apply the apps to the SD card. Some PHONES do not recognize the SD card as "internal" storage and thus, you have to re-format and change the SD card designation to "Internal". And a lot of "bottom-line" phones just don't have the hardware or firmware capabilities to handle this. Now, have I got you thoroughly confused? don't despair...you can easily look up all I've said and read and understand it at your pleasure.

No you don't have me confused at all. Thank you for the response Madame. Sorry for the late reply. Well I think today is the day I will finally root and flash a new ROM. As im tired of EMUI and no adoptable storage.
Can you link me to the ROM you reccomend? I want adoptable storage. Not that much bloatware. Full functionality, including camera, wifi, netflix, wireless display etc. Also I want a little more available RAM if possible. I want adoptable storage. Please reccomend a ROM.
One more thing. I've seen that the Samsung Micro SD cards above 32 GB are working for this phone . But I may pick up a 32GB or 64GB Sandisk micro SD card. Will the Sandisk be just as compatible as the Samsung? I plan to simply get an Class 10 of 95mb read speed and 10mb write speed. Like the Sandisk ultra or the Samsung evo cards. Thank you fam.

Sorry i called you Madvane, Rick new here
What's up. I'm new to these parts of the forums. I have downgraded from s8+'s and now I'm on the H1611. I have your b180 room installed on my device and for the life of me cannot get Xposed to install without dealing with the constant boot loop. I know it takes something like 20 min. I've read somewhere but an hour is ridiculous. I have tried flashing through TWRP and I've tried through Magisk and no luck. Any idea to get Xposed installed?
Current:
Your b180 room
Rooted with Magisk
Another thing is it normal to have ram at like 300-400mb free? This phone feels super sluggish and I think MIUI is far too heavy for this phone. I agree with the folks in here that want lineageos. I'll search for a branch or source tree to see if I can get something going at least. If not I'll join the club with trying to build a tree. This phone has "0" snappiness whatsoever. A friend's LG Leon lte feels way faster than this BEHEMOTH of a phone
epikroms,
You might want to post in the H1611 Xposed thread

Well, I actually have it installed now and haven't posted here since this part of the forums are a complete ghost town. I was gonna share my current build for this device but seeing from the lack of anything here I'm not gonna even waste time releasing it to the general public. And thanks for your response but it would've been easier with just providing some information rather than making me go through pages of nonsense. But the response is what matters. I will be returning back to a real device shortly because this phone is not as snappy as everyone says and nor is it as good as everyone says for it's dollar. I bought this phone and a brand new Samsung j3 and kept this phone because I hate Samsung but now I really wish I had kept it. So good day/evening. I am out....

Well what information exactly were you looking for? Installing Xposed is not a one liner and can get a bit complicated with all the different versions.
You could have written up what Xposed version you installed and how you did it to help the next person - that's how forums work.

Also, noticed developement has come to a complete stop a while ago. I honestly thought this place was deserted. It's all good though, like your thread says, to ask you anything, so I could get pointed in a different direction haha. All good though, case closed bro later.
epikroms,
It's not my thread - madvane20s thread. Yep, slow around here cause the main party is over since the devices are low volume/low-mid range and been out for a while. Enjoy your J3.

Question cant move apps to external

Did they change something in android 11? I have went to developer options and enable Force allow apps on external . However when I go to the apps there is no "change" in the storage section. I verified with my samsung s9 andriod 10 the app had a change button in storage. Anyway I might turn this in , it seems like a good phone but 32gb of internal storage. genshin will fill it . I will probably get a 64gb model moto g power on amazon.
32 is nowhere near enough in 2022, its only for light users who use their phones for web browsing and some photos. 64 is okayish, itll hold your apps, but i recommend moving all your data to your sd card. What I will recommend, however, is a 4/128 device at minimum. Being such a great device for 2021 standards in the budget range (48mp camera, snap 662 etc) i honestly cant believe that motorolla had the audacity to release a 32gb model. 64 should have been the minimum. For the price though, at the time you wouldnt have been able to get anything better in terms of performance. With budget phones its always tradeoffs.
You can also use adopted storage, formatting an SD card as such, splitting some for the actual SD, and other for apps and such. That is what many do to make them usable, on the cheap, and high quality SD cards are more inexpensive than the entire device being upgraded too. If you've the funds for it, by all means, but if having to keep it on the cheap, that is a great option.
onoitsu..thats what im trying to do. i dont have that option with this phone. i think i read that 11 will only do that with approved apps. even if you could with 10. this phone is going back ordered a 64g b version
---never mind I had to look up adoptable storage I didn't understand what you are saying. Yes. format as internal. i hope this phone has the option
Setting SD as Adoptable Storage doesn't seem to be functioning properly. When I format SD as internal storage, everything goes as expected except for any actual meaningful data transfer between Internal storage and the newly formatted storage.
In fact, it seems to be the case where hardly any of the largest apps can take advantage of the space, forcing the phone to throw limited space warnings despite the internal storage showing tens of gigabytes in available space. The whole thing seems broken and bugged. Has anyone experienced a similar problem when it comes to using adoptable storage on these devices?
