I opened up GetJar and stumbled upon Smart Office Plus which is currently being distributed there for free. I noticed that it renders PDFs pretty well, so I tried throwing at it the files that nearly every PDF reader grinds to a halt on... large entire transit system PDF maps. I am duly impressed - when I zoom or pan around, the map renders in 1-2 seconds and never crashes. I cannot say the same of any of the following other readers I've tried - Adobe Reader (although it used to be far worse), Aldiko, ezPDF Reader, QuickOffice, Good Reader, PDF Viewer, and many others.
So if you still don't have an ideal large-PDF viewer on your NC, try this one out
Thank you very much! You're a life saver!

Have you tried Mantano? It works really well on large pdfs...but what is your definition of large? Mantano has no problem opening up magazines of 100mb or more in size.

When I say "large" I mean one large page, which is the case with many transit maps. It seems that most PDF viewers are okay with large multi-page files such as magazines, but not with large single pages, even if the file is not that large (2-3 MB). I have not tested this with Mantano.
Try the TTC (Toronto) PDF system map for example.
http://www.ttc.ca/images/fixedImages/TTCRideGuide.pdf
If I open it in Adobe Reader and try to zoom up close, it gets all blocky and takes a good 30+ seconds to load clearly. In ezPDF it produces a similar result. This had been one of my Android pet peeves for over two years (and iOS too has trouble with it) seeing as I'm a transit geek
That is a monster pdf file.
On a side note, why not just use an app like Transit Now Toronto so you won't have to use that huge file?

It's nice to have apps like that but they are not a replacement for a complete transit map. If I'd like to see where the routes go and what are the routes in an area, what I need is to see the system map.
And in general, not every transit agency has that information bundled into an app. I also like to be able to look at city bike maps when I'm traveling with my bike in another city, and the official PDF maps have far better information than Google's bike map.
Just playing around with Smart Office, the one caveat I've found is it sometimes refuses to open protected files (although I do have a program to crack them).
Adobe Reader is not as bad as it used to be - I can open Vancouver's Translink system map in there with reasonable speed, but it still chokes on TTC's.
Ultimately, yes these are "monster" PDF files, but if you were to load them on a single-core 800 MHz PC with limited RAM, they'd still load in time and not crash the whole system, and they wouldn't have a severely limited zoom capacity. It's just badly written software that prevents these files from being accessible.
An even more monstrous test case: Vancouver regional cycling map.

I know this is frowned apon at XDA but can someone PM me or post the apk. I tryed getting it from GetJar and it doesn't work... It loads but then doesn't respond to touch.
I just got smart office plus and when I tried to view a 20 meg, 338 page book I got a memory full errror and some pictures didn't load or were strangely formatted with black block backgrounds. If I view this same pdf with adobe it correctly displays everything, but it takes a while to bring the blurry/text images to sharp.
I looked though the help file but it doesn't seem to have a trouble shooting section. Is there some setting that would help fix the memory problem?
No idea. For files with a lot of pages, Aldiko might be a good choice.

Does anyone know of a Comic app that I can download new comics for a fee or for free? Like an automatic thing. I have a Manga reader which does that for me already on my EVO View. So I figured I look around for a Comic version of that....I've searched high and low for the past couple of days and nothing. I have a Comic Reader (Komik) which is an awesome app, but that's just to read. I want something that has reading and downloads at the same time. So when I turn my tablet on....it's there for my viewing pleasure. Thanks in advanced
The Comixology "Comics" app works well, and a decent amount of free content. Appears to be the app that the big US publishers (DC, Marvel) are going to for digital comics. Not sure if it has an automated "subscription" service like you are asking for.

Thanks for the information. I've tried this one before but it doesn't have what I'm looking for. IDK if they implemented the feature yet but they were talking about have an automated service...but it was just a reminder type of thing to tell you that there was a new comic. The Manga one that I have has a feature where it downloads it as well as alerts you. It downloads it straight to internal storage or SD. Which allows for offline viewing.
Ok, I wouldn't call myself a fanboy but I'm pretty in to the Samsung ecosystem. Note 2, 3, 4. Original Galaxy Gear, Tv's and now the Gear S. Coming from the O.G. Galaxy gear, I thought the Gear S was a worthy upgrade. Water resistance, bigger and brighter screen. I have been very patient with Samsung and them rolling out apps to there watches. The Galaxy Gear never really got the apps I wanted unless I hacked it and cracked it with android apps made for phones. That kind of held me down for a bit. Then it just got too cumbersome for a watch. Especially with Nova Launcher and the battery drain was horrible because it just wasn't optimized to run like a phone. Here comes the Gear S, to solve all our problems. It just seems like the same old crap to me. Don't get me wrong, I really like the watch. For notifications and an occasional news feed it works awesome. Even the pedometer and the fitness functions seem to work better. But with the looming release of the Apple Watch I have to ask. Where the hell are the apps?!! I'm already hearing about all the different apps and developers working on the Apple Watch apps. I have a feeling its going to be another lopsided battle like it used to be with Android and Apple in the appstore a few years back. But why?! Samsung has had, damn near, a 2 year head-start in this category. You mean to tell me after releasing 5-6 Smart watches that they still cant conjure up any app support? I see the same old half baked apps in the app store everyday. No popular apps like facebook, youtube, instagram (there is a fake one that might be ok). It just seems as though samsung doesn't follow all the way through.
I know they are working on the next big thing, but I feel like we have all been left in the dark by buying another Samsung experiment. Its not fun being the guinea pig anymore.
Have a look down the back of the sofa... you'll be amazed what you can find there.
It's a watch, with the addition of gear notification extender installed I'm struggling to think of anything more I need/want it to do. My note 4 is superior in every way so the watch is just for a glance or a response on the fly.
Happy to hear what you're missing though?

.....oh I would like a voip app though.
I still think it's better than the Apple Watch because you don't have to have your phone with you. All those stupid apps mean nothing when you're working with a 2 inch screen.
Apps
Hi,
I agree with OP, I would like more apps. In fact, I already gave up checking for new ones.
If I receive a notification that a friend posted something on facebook, I want to see what they posted. If they uploaded a picture, I want to see that too.
I want to respond to what's app messages and not just receive them!
I do love the smartthings app that let's me turn on/off lights from my wrist, that is awesome !
Google is working on iOS compatibility for android wear devices, I so wished the Gear S could be fully compatible with my work iPhone6 and my Note 3... Sort of have the Gear become the hub manager for all my devices...
Gear Notification app
In the Google Playstore lets u reply with many apps, whatsapp is one.
I agree that they need more apps, but there are some good ones out there that you can get:
Xenozu Player for Youtube, works well. click on pic to play, and text for info
GearTweet for Twitter, much improved lately
GearGram for Instagram and plays video as well as shows pics
Basic Video Player, load videos to your Gear through PC to play on app
Wearable Widgets, I can use it to control my lights at home that on on my WeMo switches, using WeMo widgets; I can see my outside surveillance cameras using the IP Cam Viewer Basic widget
IPCameraViewer, I can see my indoor home surveillance camera feed through Gear S app
OperaMini for web browsing
Milk music for streaming to my bluetooth headset at the gym, without having to carry my phone.
S Health, I have used very well to track and motivate myself to move and exercise more. I lost 85 lbs. last year and it gets some credit. Program finally much better than it was.
I too hope they push for more, but in the end it will be up the the other companies and developers and they will probably go to Apple due to shear volume of sales alone.
Good luck.
Cheers,
Mark
I have the same extra apps as you. I have wemo switches and a foscam camera outside. The ip camera app is great because it doesn't need to be paired to a phone

Another Great APP! GEARAM MUSIC ID.
Just like Shazam and has gotten over 10 songs in a row correct from my phone playlist.
I agree with the original post. The watch falls short of its potential. I generally use my phone for most types of communication. There are times, like in my car, when grabbing a phone is impractical. This is particularly true if my wife calls and reminds me of something I need to do in the future. With my Gear 1 I could double press and add a calendar reminder, no problem. I could controll Pandora which was great with a headset in my Miata with the top down. Cousin Sammy is trying to make Tizen into their version of i-something and they are losing sight of the consumer. Stop giving me watch faces and give me some interaction with my phone apps. That would fulfil my interpretation of their promise when I bought it as a companion device. Sammy watch should work well with a Sammy phone.

This is off topic, but how did you control Pandora on your Gear 1?
On the stock setup, I turned on Pandora via my phone and put it away. The music control on the watch would control volume and I could skip songs. Couldn't change favorites but it worked OK otherwise.
Great to know. I have been thinking about selling my Zenwatch for the Gear S
Klokker for the Samsung Gear S
Hi everyone,
I'm very excited to announce my Klokker app for the Gear S in the Samsung Apps Store.
The Gear S is an impressive hardware masterpiece that the only thing it needs are fancy apps.
Klokker is an information safe repository especially designed for Samsung Gear S smartwatches.
You can store in your Gear S valuable information sometimes difficult to remember like your car insurance number, your passport number, your VISA card number or your bank account number. This information is protected under a password or passcode to avoid non-authorized access.
I really like my Gear S and I'm working very hard on several ideas to bring new apps to this smartwatch. I'm not only working hard, I'm working with illusion. I'm posting this announcement here because I know I will receive feedback about my work. I want to make the Gear S something really useful in our lives, something that can help us or solve some of our daily life problems.
I'm focused primarily on standalone applications. Companion apps are cool, but I wanna make the Gear S as much independent as I can. In fact, the Gear S is the most independent smartwatch of all. So I'm not following a wrong approach right now.
I will populate my Facebook page, my blog in Tumblr and my Youtube channel with more information in the next days. If you would like follow me on Twitter to keep in touch with all my projects.
Take a look at my support site at ayalawilson.com or look for Klokker in the Samsung Apps store.
Your feedback will be really valuable for me.
Thank you very much in advanced and I hope you like my app!

Don't know that I need such an app. But I love your standalone way of thinking. I see no reason why I should need a companion app.
Hope you come up with some cool apps. Good luck.
Reason why we need a companion app

The main reason why we need a companion app is that the smartwatch is a very limited computing platform so far: reduced screen, no keyboard (the Gear S is a big exception to the rule with the Fleksy keyboard and its 2" screen), tiny speakers, few memory and limited storage in general.
In a companion mode, the main app processes information on the smartphone using its power and connectivity capabilities (again the Gear S is another exception to the rule with BlueTooth, 3G, Wi-Fi and USB). The smartwatch app only displays information or performs some interaction with the user.
The Companion design is very useful for many apps where the smartwatch lacks of the power or interaction needed. But it drains battery at the same time to the watch and to the phone. The Wi-Fi connection is better in saving power especially in idle mode. You are lucky again if you have a Gear S and you can synchronize your smartwatch via Wi-Fi!
Because, the Gear S exhibits a tremendous autonomy as a computer platform, I choose it for my future standalone apps!

Agree with needing stand-alone apps. Can you create an audiobook app with bookmarking and 15 second forward/backward skip functionality? I go running with my Gear S and gave up on trying to listen to audiobook because I keep losing my place in the books
I also agree with OP? The app store is a big let-down.
Hi xendula,
Create that app is not a big problem for me. But before starting a new app project, I would like to ask if there is no any other music or audiobook player on the Samsung Gear Apps with bookmarking and 15 forward/backward skip functionality.
The idea is not bad. Something simple, useful, easy to use.
Which app do you use right now to play your audiobooks?
Do you copy your audiobooks in a particular folder or just in the music folder?
Which average size your audiobooks are?
Are your audiobooks in mp3 format?

There is not one audiobook app in the app store, and other Gear S owners have asked for the same type of app, with the addition of sleep timer functionality within the app.
My books are all MP3 (between 7-14 files per book) that I copy into the music folder. Since each file is around 50 mins long, bookmarking and skipping back and forth is imperative. The app would need to know to play back files within a subdirectory as one book.
I tried to use the regular music app, but gave up, because I kept losing my place in the books
Finally a good standalone application to run, unfortunately a fee but it seems better than s-health and nike running
Now free version...
No heartrate? Would be nice if crappy optical heart rate sensor was supported. Would be much nicer if bluetooth heart rate belts were supported! I wonder if its even possible for developers to support heart rate belts, because none of the existings apps support it yet...

Hi, finally... Where Can I download It. Most beautiful news of the week. Thanks!
hi, I downloaded from Samsung apps gear through gear manager ... it is located in the health and fitness
I would be happy to pay for this as long as some functions are added.
For Android wear there is a "killer app" called Ghost Racer that turns the Sony Smartwatch 3 into a runners favorite.
If this is going to be a "killer app" for runners on the Tizen platform and the Samsung Gear S (1 and 2) especially, some essential things are missing.
First of all - the running results must be able to be uploaded/exported to a popular running service such as runkeeper, strava etc.
More measurements needs to be added such as heart rate (internal or external bluetooth heart rate sensors), cadence and more.
Also - you need to be able to personalize your own running screen for what information you want to see (preferably several screens)
All these things work with Ghost Racer on Android Wear (on Sony Smartwatch 3)
If some of these things are added, this could be a really nice app that I would be glad to pay for it.
Is there an official website for the app or how can we get in contact with the developer?
Ooops - posted this first in the wrong Thread!
I've purchased the Paid App and an trying to figure out if the saved recorded files can be exported. Is anyone here rooted that could tell me whether there are any unique files that are saved to a Data folder? (No data is saved to the internal user storage folders)
While a standalone app that uses the watch's GPS is useful, this is really more of a Beta with very limited functionality. All it can really tell you is time, distance and pace. (And I don't yet know how accurate the watch GPS is going to be on distance). Plus the app turns the screen off immediate on the start of a recording, and only turns back on to displace pace etc. every mile - so pace data is not going to be too helpful. I can see my track on a (Google) map screen, but the track did not appear on my Google map history so there’s no export potential there.
A watch based app that uses the onboard GPS and records time, distance, pace (with configurable updates and audible output), and heart rate and that has exportable data in tcx or txt format is still needed.
But it seems that Nike+ running will work stand alone... so may meet most needs...
Anyone know of good calendar and weather apps for the Fit 2?
The calendar app should work with the native Samsung calendar app on the phone, or Google calendar. Both of which I already have and use.
I would buy them in a heartbeat if I could find them!
Let me know!
I've found nothing. None of the apps work with the fit 2
Sent from my SM-N930T using Tapatalk
I found a great watchface called "Black Modern" by minimin.
It provides fast access to weather calendar and other functions.
Now that I've used the Fit 2 for a couple of weeks, I am seeing that my initial interest to do "more" on it has waned, from a practical perspective. It turns out, as of now, that I just don't want to do actual input on the Fit 2 very much. Simply having read-only access to my calendar is perfectly fine. My phone is always nearby for me to make new calendar events. Besides, the limited form-factor of a small space within which to input data really makes the Fit 2 more of a data display device, rather than a device I want to spend a lot of time typing into. At least that's my use case as of now.
I love this thing!
Found it! Thought it would be on GP, but it's on Sammy's apps. Thanks!

Your welcome!
Still looking for something better. Slightly larger text, excluding some info I never use (water, caffeine) would be best.
Maybe I need to create my own.
