i've planned to format my internal since it left insufficient storage left.. i dont know what's wrong with my internal memory.. i already transfered all the files like photo, music and movie to my computer, and the storage still low.. so i decide to format it, but i had read some thread in google that said if we format our system, we will lost our "certificate file" something called EFS.. is this true?
No, sdcard is in /data/media folder.
EFS and other files are storaged somewhere else won't be affected if you format sdcard in right way.
if you use recovery like TWRP when you factory reset, you will see it reports something like "Wipe data without wipe /data/media "
Suggest you do so in recovery instead of system
You can format these partition without problem
Cache, dalvik cache, internal /external sdcard, data and system, don't do anything you don't know about.
If you format system, then you have to install new one otherwise phone won't even boot up.
Just be careful.
And if you do something wrong, and you can still go into recovery and download mode, then your phone is still alive.
Remember backup EFS and copy to PC!!!

Formatting sd won't mess up your efs, in fact I format data/system/sd card and preload every flash, but that is mainly because I'm swapping between Samsung Roms and Aosp, with the associated sd/0 problems

As long as anything you may need is on ext. SD, ie the Rom you want to flash after wiping!
And make sure your titanium backups and nandroid are on ext sd also, and backed up on pc, in other words, all usual precautions.
Grab HC-kTool from Play, and make a back up of your efs and copy that to multiple places then you are well and truly ready to go!

and the internal will have more space? now im running out of MB in my internal =.=
Hello all. Somewhat of a n00b to android. I recently got the new nexus 7 (2013) and have been playing around with flashing roms and using a custom recovery. So i know how to do all of that now but my main questions are:
1. When flashing a ROM(ie CM) what partitions are affected? What is actually being flashed on the device? System partition? Kernel too? Because i notice when i factory reset and then flash a new rom, the same data is still on the internal storage.
2. I know that there's a system, dalvik, cache, recovery and boot partition. Well im trying to figure out what exactly does flashing a rom do? Is internal storage a separate partition from those main partitions?
I apologize if this topic has already been covered somewhere else. I have searched the threads and cannot find a straightforward answer. Thanks for your help guys!
Your device has a fake sdcard this your internal storage which flashing a ROM through your custom recovery does not touch
For the most part when flashing a ROM it will only write to the system and boot partition (occasionally data) but you should be wiping cache, userdata and dalvik and this may be in the updater-script if the ROM you are flashing.
Of course depending on the device there are lots of other partitions namely, bootloader (sometimes split between primary and secondary and sometimes even a third SPL) and recovery, some have a separate splash1, radio/modem partitions, and then you can keep going with a slue of others that aren't affected by a normal flash, a quick search will certainly find you a list of all partitions to your device

1. When you flash a rew rom, the files are maily written to system partition. User apps (or if you download from play store) are stored to data partition. Yes, kernel is being flashed, too! Try to open a rom.zip before flashing and you will see, which files are in which partitions.
2.On my old HTC Desire internal storage was a seperate partition. But on my HTC One i dont really know...wanted to know this, too Sometimes i think its not..
Correct me if i am wrong
Hope i could help you somehow!
hi xda!

in addition i have used the delete all user data from settings after flushing....

why the hell dont they get deleted???????

Dude, how did you managed to wipe catech and devlik in the first place? Please, share your knowledge:laugh::laugh::laugh:
Seriously,of course your files are intact, because you didn't formatted the internal sd, where your pics, music etc are stored. You can format it manually if you want to.
flushing all the way!!!:highfive:

I did. That's why I suggest you to format it.Wiping data and formatting are not the same thing.

Either with PC or via CWM or phone's settings.Formatting the internal SDcard0 will delete everything you stored there,so backup all the important files to you, like music and photos before. No,this won't affect system.

Can Anyone help me, please? The phone literally itself without doing anything started doing a download(odin) mode loop. So I deleted data, dalvik, cache, system partitions without internal storage since it has very very important files for me and a lot of projects for the university!!! and before and after the folders in internal storage in twrp shows as random numbers and letters. I don't know why since when the phone was working normally I was protecting it by fingerprint and a password. And when I installed a stock ROM after it without wiping the internal storage. The storage is showing in negative. If anyone can help me this would be super appreciated and helpful. Thank you!
If there is a way I can use my password to decrypt the internal storage it would be insanely helpful!
