Hello, I'm traveling out of the country soon and it's going to be a major change for me because I'll be going from an unlimited data plan to a very restricted amount of data. I have a lot of background processes, push notifications, syncing, etc going, which normally consumes a lot amount of data.
When I'm out of country, I want to essentially stop all data and syncing save for whatever VoIP and messaging solutions I choose.
So for example, I want to limit Gmail, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Google app, and other the other stuff that's constantly using data, pushing notifications, etc, but still have messages/calls come through on Hangouts, Google Voice, Skype, Facebook messenger, or whatever I decide to use. Ideally I'd like to download Google or Waze maps on GPS (I believe they both cover Italy) and then turn off data and only use the GPS radio. Still, if I need to turn data back on for Google Maps, or to check my email, I don't necessarily want data and syncing turning back on for all other apps, and I don't want the app to continue using data when I'm done with it.
I also want to ability to remove the limits on all the apps as soon as I'm in WiFi. However, WiFi can be unreliable, so I don't want to enable data for everything and accidentally have the WiFi drop and the 3G/4G turn on. I assume this means turning off the radios, however, I don't want to lose the ability to text/call (emergencies only) so I'd want to leave that particular radio on.
Is there an app or Android feature that would let me play with data usage in this manner? I'm rooted running stock 6.0.1 on my Nexus 6P.
Thanks!
PS. Unless Tasker is a lot more fool proof and easy to learn/setup than it used to be, I just can't use that as my solution right now due to lack of time before I leave.

I've go a Hero and it's setup to sync my Calendar, Contacts and Mail. Unlike the iPhone, I haven't been able to find a setting for how often this sync happens?
Anyone know if there's a way to setup Push vs 15mins vs blah blah, or just how often it does it?
Thanks,
Stephen
nope, no settings.
it just does it when it needs to.
it's pseudo push....it seems to ping every so often in the background and only do a full sync when some changes have been made at one end or the other.
seems pretty quick on mine, i generally get emails within the minute. Plenty fast enough for anyone (lets face it, no-one needs their emails within 5 seconds, they just like to get arsey about it!)
Sure, I was just wondering whether (like on an iPhone) you could lengthen your battery life by setting the interval up a bit.
nope. you can turn it off, but that's it.
there are various apps in the market that can turn it on and off at various times, and may be able to simulate something like that by turning it on and off regularly....

pls tell the names of those apps
try searching the market for 'sync' maybe?
Alternatively, check the older threads here for something like 'turn sync off at night'.
I cant remeber the name of the thread exactly, but there is one discussing this, and an app was found.
App "Locale" with Sync plugin (separate install) are great for turning sync on and off according to conditions like time, location, battery-level, etc.

Awesome. I knew someone here would know.
You can also set up the regular "mail" client (vs gmail) to pull in your data. This has a setting for how often it syncs.
yeah but that's only for mail, not for contacts and calendar as well.
But very good point for those who are only interested in email....
Anyone know if it is possible to use the Tasker app to only enable data when opening a browser or sending emails (or any other apps requiring data)?
I don't have any sync enabled so I only really need data when the screen is on. Would love to have this feature as I reckon it would save a huge amount of battery.
Apparently it was possible with Cyanogen on Galaxy S??
Hi Everyone,
I got this phone as soon as it was released in New Zealand. The phone is great however I'm finding very high data usage.
Today for example I used over 100mb of data from about 12pm lunchtime. I'm wondering how I can change how often gmail and other applications will because I've gone through the gmail menu but it doesn't specify a time period for sync and I dont want to be using over 100mb per day for data.
On my old Galaxy S I was only using 100mb for the whole month, and I haven't got any extra applications that I know of running for update, just the default weather app, gmail, and my calendar widget.
Any help is appreciated.
Have you checked the built in data monitor
Menu > setting > data
It shows you exactly per app how much data has been used and if this was background (updates) or foreground (when you opened the app).

Go to settings->data usage and see which apps use the most data.
you can also turn off mobile data by pulling down the notification bar at the top of the screen and tapping the mobile data icon on/off
Go to data usage, you'll probable see gallery is the culpritpen it and check the box that limits it to syncing on wi-fi only or it'll sync all your Facebook albums. To stop it doing this completely, remove Facebook for Sync account.
Second, if you don't use google+, uncheck the google photos, google+ etc options under your gmail and that'll get rid of the Picasa gallery too.
Just with regard to the build in data usage monitor how accurate is it?
The reason i ask is because every single app ive ever used has not been accurate, some have been better than others but not one of them has ever been 100% accurate, the best one ive come across and it's free is the one which is part of the superb ZD Box app.

It is very accurate, however it does come with the usual disclaimer saying that networks may monitor and bill differently.
Hi Everyone
I tried to find this with a search but no luck.
I have recently noticed that I seem to be using more data than I normally do. Looking into this I see that exchange services is constently using data. I have about 2MB or more per day just for this. I have my work email setup on this but it is manual sync and I have not sync this for some months now. Does anything else use exchange services? It just seems that I eat up much more data than i ever did before.
Any suggestions? I am thinking about rooting this phone. Would this be of any help to an issue like this?
thx
I use Exchange and have it set to push. I get 50+ emails a day and it uses <100 k per day.

I also use exchange in push mode. I use Moxier Mail as I prefer it over the stock client. I get fewer emails than moorecomp, however like him, I also get negligible data traffic.

Thx for the replies. I know, I have used exchange on this phone for almost a year now with very low data useage. I looked again at my exchange data rate and I have used 120mb in 13 days. I have not received any email through exchange during this time. Something has changed and is just draining data. Could it be some other program that uses exchange for something?
Thx again
Well for now I am just turning my data off unless I need it. This may be OK as it really saves on my battery as well. I downloaded a data switch widget and we will try that for a while.
Does anyone think that rooting and running a rom could help with this problem?
Thx

Go under Settings-> Data Usage and scroll down to Exchange Services and select it. Check to see how your data is consumed, foreground or background. I'm guessing it is mostly background data. So what you can do is click on the check box below to deactivate the background data on this application only. No need to entirely cut off your data. When you want to check your work email, just uncheck the background data to allow the exchange service to kick in and then refresh. Because you are already manually checking your email, this shouldn't affect you much and it will get rid of the data Exchange is eating.

Hey Thx. I did not know that feature was there.
I am on prepaid data plan so I use DroidWall or Android Firewall (iptables based) to only let several apps through to use mobile data, like GMail, messaging apps, email, etc. while everything else is wi-fi only.
Blinkfeed is growing on me and I'd like to let it through the firewall, but I couldn't figure out what it is called in the list. Anybody knows?
