So i was about to check something on the internet by using 3g data, but for some reason the 3g wasnt working, so i thought id refresh the phone by giving it a fresh reboot.
Upon doing so, after the phone fully rebooted, i got a notification in the notification bar 'Usb Storage Damaged' with sub-text 'Usb storage damaged. It may need reformatting'.
I have checked and i can access everything in CWM recovery, so therefore backing up the stuff i want/need shouldnt be a problem.
My question is, that is there a way to fix this WITHOUT reformatting?
Any help appreciated.
Thanks

Ideally copy off the data first so you have a backup then run chkdsk in Windows as it's FAT32.

Hi, I have a similar problem on my unrooted S2.. I have read that using chkdsk in Windows on an unrooted phone wont work (and didn't when I tried). I don't mind rooting, though I'm not sure if I could even do this while there is a USB storage error. I have hours of recorded lectures on my phone, and exams coming up soon so I am desperate not to reformat if possible!
I've been using my phone without USB storage for about 2 weeks now trying find a fix, and I guess this is my last hope, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your answer , But when I connect my phone to the PC and choose USB storage ,all I get is grayed out I and J drives.
how do I preform a CHKDSK? I tried running CHKDSK.exe but it doesn't seem to do anything (it says it's in read -only mode) .
EDIT:
I got it ,it's working again ,a couple of restarts and connecting \disconnecting to pc solved it.
as for CHKDSK.exe I copied it to the sd card and ran it from there.
thanks a lot
Hi,
I have a similar problem...
My SGSII battery ran out and when I started the phone after recharge, it started to give an error that the internal storage is damaged and also stopped to recognize the microSD card.
The microSD connected to the PC it is recognized and does not accuse error with chkdsk. I tried to format the MicroSD (on the phone) and then to mount it, but it does work.
Also, connecting the phone to PC in mass storage mode simply shows teh drive letters, I can't access the drives.
I did not want to format the internal storage before be able to copy my data, and I think the problems are related.
I managed to mount and access the internal storage using the terminal emulator (running on the phone) using the command
mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p11 /sdcard/
But the rest of the system does not recognize even after this procedure, and I don't know the command to do the same with the MicroSD; or copying data to a PC to then try to wipe or factory reset.
I've tried to reinstall the ROM with ODIN and did not solved the problem.
Also tried to install CWM recovery, but it can not mount / sdcard (gives error).
Could anyone help me?
Thank you!
Hi all,
First off, get the laughs out the way. Not posted on here before but used the forum a lot over the past year or so and i desperatley need someones help.
Long story short.
1) Currently i can only access CMR 6.0.3.2
2) I have no ROM available on int SD due to doing a system wipe while flashing Cyanogenmod 11 nightly which failed due to Status 7 error ( did not think this error would happen!)
3) My PC & Laptop will not recognise the S3 through USB despite all correct drivers being correct.
4) CMR will not let me mount the 8GB ext SD card. I have tried formatted to NTSC and Fat 32 and both not mounting, get the mount error message.
To sum it up, im fooked. I cannot access the int SD to drop a ROM on it and cannot access the Ext SD card through recovery which DOES have a ROM on it.
Do any ofyou fantastic people have any idea what i can do apart from dress it up nicely and make an ornament out of it?
Thanks!

Yes Scott. Do not make an ornament out of it!
Okay, serious .. download the ROM of your region from sammobile.com. Install Odin on your laptop. Boot your S3 in download mode. Flash the firmware from sammobile.com on your phone using Odin.

Hi Hamza,
Thanks for the reply. This is one of the problems noted above as that my laptop and PC will not recognise my S3 via USB. Tried different USB wires and installed various versions of the drivers, uninstalled, reinstalled etc It just will not connect be recognised.
Any other thoughts?

Sorry, I thought that your phone will get recognized when in Odin mode or download mode. I am afraid I am out of tricks for now, but let me search and get back to you in case I find anything
Hello Scott,
Can you enter in Download mode on phone?
"First shut down your device, then power on by simultaneously pressing the power button, home button and volume down key. Now you will see download mode and you will be asked if you want to cancel or continue. Press volume up to continue or volume down to cancel and reboot."
For that part you don't need connection to PC (yet).
If u succeed entering in download mode, then use the link that Hamza posted, to restore your device through Odin
HI!
Its no problem to get in to download mode but as the laptop and PC will not recognise my S3, neither does Odin.
The very 1st think i knew to do was to try and flash a stock ROM via Odin, but sadly can't
I've flashed ROM's a lot however it was a rookie mistake not to make a backup on this occasion that was accessable in this situation. My backups and ROMs are on the Ext SD card....
Ive searched and the only 2 outcomes i can see to resolve are to mount my Ext SD card, which i can't do on CMR or to make the handset visible o use Odin or to drop a ROM on the Int SD but again, can't.

We have 5 or 6 USB cables for our phones around here, and only 3 work for our S3 phones. Worth a try?
One more thing crossed my mind... In CWR, did you try "mount usb storage"? Under "mounts and storage" setting.
I had a similar problem few weeks ago, changed recovery and new recovery didn't want to read exFat card...

I suggest you uninstall samsung kies first.
Proceed here uninstall old samsung usb drivers too.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2038555
There is 3 methods of installing it clearly written there with step by step instructions. Hope with this method your pc recognize your phone.
If that method fails.
Like many said you have to manually insert rom files into your external sd card using a reader. I hope your problem is not similar to this guy

Hi,
Tried various USB cables and nada. Due to this Odin, Kies or anything will else will not recognise the handset and that's on a PC and a Laptop.
As for the Mass Storage in recovery, the version of CMR doesn't have that option otherwise i would have tried!
I was focusing more on trying to mount the Ext SD card on CMR. Is there any suggestions on this? Tried NTFS and Fat 32 with varying cluster sizes but not happening. Any other suggestions?

Fat32 should work, not sure about NTFS... Did u tried another card? Or removing battery and reinserting after SD card format?
Thanks for all the suggestions.... Had a family emergency.
Tried everything, i now think that there is a hardware issue with the phone as its a Code 43 error whenever i try to update the driver so the handset can talk to my PC. Seen as this option looks fooked i can only now and try to figure why the Ext SD wont mount on CMR and how to resolve it.
If i can;t then no option but to send it to the big warehouse in the Sky,
Just to exclude, did you tried another SD card?

SO I was trying to flash Archidroid rom on my phone, had the zip in my internal memory. Installed Team Win Recovery project like recommended and wiped everything before installing like recommended but I forgot it would also wipe the rom.
So now Im left with no OS on my phone and only TWR to work with... I dont have a micro sd reader so that's a huge headache, bought a usb OTG cable to try and flash the rom through a pen drive but for some reason Team Win Recovery is not recognizing my OTG usb despite my pendrive light being on. So I have no phone and no means to flash a new rom.
Please help me, what do I do? Is there anything I could do to get otg to work? Can't afford to buy a card reader at the moment.
I'm not sure but i think u can mount the internal memory or the SD using normal USB cable to the computer, then copy the zip file.

I already tried that, my computer doesn't recognize my phone. It worked when I had android installed obviously but not now. Do I need any special driver or anything?
Hello,
If you can't install a custom rom you can install an official one with Odin. Search on google for tutorials. Good luck.

I haven't used twrp 'cause i'm on philztouch, but isn't there any option to mount the internal memory or the sd card to the computer? If not, u either need to copy the file to the sd using another phone or camera, or use Odin to go back to default system.

So... I don't even know, if I use ADB right. I use it in this way:
I boot into recovery - Open ADB on Computer - Plug my phone into the computer - Tap in the recovery ADB sideload - Its loading, loading... While its loading I check, if my ADB on my computer finds my phone (adb devices), it don't find it - my phone displays after a few minutes a red error (just one word, error)
So, am I doing right? Please correct me, if I doing sth wrong. Thanks
If you have TWRP then you should be able to connect your phone to PC via usb and transfer data on internal storage via MTP.
Hey,
All u need is a little work, firstly I would recommend you to buy 1 sdcard as it's so cheap and easy to get rather than borrowing it from friend, as u may need it again sooner or later.
Second, after u plug in usb cable to pc, please check whether your pc has installed right adb driver for your device or it wont work for adb sideload command.
Third, ensure you have the right rom for your device, I assume you have it downloaded into your pc. Just open the adb terminal and type adb sideload filename.zip . and it will automatically start installation process.
Dont forget to make a full nandroid backup at least once and save it in Sdcard or cloud storage for emergency case like one you're facing now.
Good luck buddy [emoji1]

Hey, I am not a noob, but I too accidentally deleted my internal memory of samsung SM-N750. I am quite experienced in using odin and flashing kernels etc. But I am stupidly impatient. Today I performed a nandroid backup, then went ahead and wiped off ALL DATA except sd card! It was cuz of lack of awareness and shortage of time. I am preparing for my college exams, suddenly xposed framework caused repeated bootloops, so I decided to perform a proper rom installation, root and xposed right from scratch.
Anyways, I easily installed the lollipop rom via odin, rooted it and everything's peachy.
Is there any way of recovering that nandroid backup zip file, which was on the internal storage? In short, Does twrp perform a full wipe or quick wipe of storage?
I tried using an app "undeleter" but it didn't find any such (around 4gb) zip file in the internal storage. Any other android or windows based apps?
I don't stand to lose too much, just that I would have to install all apps and settings etc which will waste a lot of time.
@arya809
I believe that big files are harder to recover. There's an app called DiskDigger but to recover .zip files you need the pro version which is paid and it can't guarantee that you will recover your file. I do not know any other app that might help you (there are many apps for windows but I can't recommend a particular one since I haven't used any).
If you didn't lost important data I will recommend to install them manually. You can use your PC and install the desired apps directly from http://play.google.com/ (it might be slightly faster to find and install them).
Boot up the recovery, plug it into your computer, your device should show up in the file manager, copy the ROM to the device, and then flash it

There is a device called card reader(some wizard from hogwarts invented it) which will help you to copy data to sd card from your computer
And did you tried mount option in twrp???
In twrp first click mount internal storage the connect it with usb cable it will show storage on your device then copy the rom to it.
Sorry for bad english
I was running the Pure Nexus ROM but took the decision to try a new one, that's when the trouble started.
Before semi bricking the N9, i updated the version of TWRP on it to 3.2.1-0 and installed supersu as it wasn't rooted prior to messing it up.
IO think the trouble started when TWRP was asking for a password, and it didn't match the PIN i had setup. Anyway, i d/loaded slimrom 7.1.2 and gapps to root of SD card, did a factory reset and wiped, system, dalvik and cache. When i went to flash the new ROM, i couldn't see the zip file in the root folder.
If i look at the root folder in recovery, i see one of the images below and the other when rebooting the tablet.
When i try to connect the N9 to my windows 10 PC it is not being detected, i don't know why do to about this to try and go down the adb route.
I have installed Android Studio to try and move things on, but i don't know what to do next, or even if anything can be done.
I am almost sure i had the OEM unlocked before flashing the rom.
Can someone suggest what i should try next? I won't be able to check back in for a day or two due to work, but i definitely will when i get the chance.
TIA

Gave it a go, no luck unfortunately. The sdcard is as the attached image.
I have ordered an OTG cable, hopefully i will be able to flash a rom that way on TWRP.
Edit: i was able to borrow an OTG cable. I formatted it FAT32 on windows PC and copied across the rom zip file. I rebooted into recovery on N9, and tried to mount the usb drive, but it is not appearing on the list of devices. When i pligged the same OTG cable and attached usb drive into my phone, it picked them up, so i think the otg cable i am using is good.

If you formatted data, there won't be anything on sdcard. You'll have to either push it with adb, or as you said otg.
Or download the factory image and fastboot flash to start over. Or sideload the full OTA zip (they have full images of ota zips now).
Got it sorted in the end. Embarrassingly the reason the tablet wasn't detected by my Windows PC is because the cable was a little lose.
