Is it possible? Would it have to be in a gear s firm wear update?
Both are good but have major issues.
Nike - can't turn off hr sensor (which doesn't transfer to app anyway) for preservation of battery for long runs. Also can't see red "scrolling" data while running
S health - imports to app and can turn off hr. Also can see well. But mile splits on new s health are way inaccurate.
And both give no audio input to progress ie pace
Agree that it would be really nice to see some updates to these core fitness apps. I tried MapMyRun and quickly realized that it was draining my battery because the display was on through my entire run. I've been trying out Endomondo and like some of its features. I suspect that Under Armour will eventually revamp all the fitness apps they recently acquired and consolidate them into a single app.
Nike+ has high potentials, but currently fatal shortcoming elements rendering it useless.
The screen showing only 1 readable, non-configurable number with tiny little useless info scrolling underneath.
The hr should be able to run for many hours.... my mio-alpha does that so with a little power-tweaking and on/off switching a lot is still to be gained there. Currently the hr is very error-prone and thus unreliable.
Even when Gear-s does record the hr..... it is not uploaded to the nike+ app, and no graph is shown on android.
(Notice that the Gear-S DOES show a graph before upload, and Nike+ does show graphs (hr and speed) on iPhone!)
To me.... it is a matter of getting a proper update, with 'working in the field' actual function.
Avid runner frustrated with Gear S (been deliberating s health vs Nike)- s health gives inaccurate splits, and poor map color coding in stats afterwards while Nike plus stats are unreadable while running (red ticker tape at bottom) AND sometimes gps kicks in at 0.25 miles in run. Well I think I have found a work around.
Lotta steps but really easy.
1) will be using nike plus app for run
2) make sure watch fully charged
3) disconnect phone and watch from each other using gear app (watch in standalone)
4) on watch turn off gear network-ie set to always off- (this auto turns off mobile network)
5) (revelation)- go to accessibility under settings on watch and turn on "invert colors" this makes Nike app stats (formerly dark red) HIGHLY visible during run-watc will be flaming white colors
6) turn off all motions (ie so when you lift up watch nothing happens)
7) allow at least 15 second auto screen off time or even 30 seconds - 10s (default) is too short while running to see scrolling stats.
Because of 6 above, I press button to turn on watch and take a peak while running, and then hit button again to turn off - this saves battery as well because with motion activated to turn on watch, I believe watch is often being triggered on and you don't know it.
8) connect Bluetooth headset if you wish
9) first turn on s health and pause pedometer...(battery saver)
10) then go to "run"on s health and start a run! This will activate and lock GPS (takes about 1 minute)....once run starts GPS is locked....immediately end the run. Now, clear all active apps. Start your music through Samsung music player (as Nike doesn't shuffle).
10) now open Nike app and start run...click "no" to music (already playing)..because you did the fake run with s health, you'll notice gos turns green 2 seconds into run (otherwise takes a minute into run).
Getting good battery life. Should be adequate for half marathon/2 hours
Tnx for the tips...only thing that bothers me is turning of mobile network. Is it just for saving battery or is it for another reason? I like the idea to be reachable in case of emergency, or if something happens to me while running...
Maybe a suggestion regarding the gps kicking in too late with nike+. Haven't tried it yet myself, but when starting the run, can't you immediately press pause and wait for a minute or so and then resume the run? So allowing the gps to get a lock? Will try it next time I go for a run....
Glen, yes, you can leave gear net on to be reached. Should have specified these tips are to max out batter for 2hr plus run.
Try the accessibility tip. Makes seeing the red row at bottom much easier. Couldn't see it on my watch at max bright while running in sun.
Update. Really sunny day. Tried it again. Ran for 45 mins with h above formula. Battery down 30% - not bad.
But still couldn't follow small text scrolling while running. What a bummer.
I think turning off pedometer/mobile network/makes Nike app last for 2+ hours for long race. But - a) hard to track pace and time b) very touchy to accidentally pause run while trying to hit button on bottom of gear s or to change music.
S health with hr off (unless you need it) will only drain batter 20% in 45 mins and you can flip up watch with motion on and see time and distance (do math in head) and know how your doing. But stats after are garbage. (No real splits) -broken and basic in app
Thanks Jeff and all for good info of how to improve the Gear S for running using Nike+
Unfortunately I can not find the tip:
5) (revelation)- go to accessibility under settings on watch and turn on "invert colors" this makes Nike app stats (formerly dark red) HIGHLY visible during run-watc will be flaming white colors.
- I have searched but I do not have any "accessibility" in the settings menue on watch and have not found "invert colours" anywhere in any menues.
My experience so far of the Gear S for exercising:
-My intention when buying the Gear S was purely for exercising, to be able to leave the phone at home and just use the Gear S with a bluetooth headset while running. The thought of a stand alone feature device where I could utilize Endomondo, Runkeeper, etc. was very much wanted, but after have using the Gear S for a month or so now I have to say that I am very disappointed of the lack of stand-alone function. Almost all exercise apps are intended to run on the phone and the Gear will just be a remote display, so based on this I could have bought any other smart watch.
The main feature with Gear S to be a fully stand-alone unit is unfortunately not at all being utilized by anyone.
All the available apps that can be used partly as stand-alone (S health and Nike+) but both are lacking so many features that I feel almost that I have been just as good using my Polar training watch as a simple timer and heart rate logger.
What I would love that both S health and Nike+ would add as feature is voice feedback (pace, time, heart rate, distance) during exercise. Also to be able to coach during exercise like Endomondo or Runkeeper when having a training plan. The S health app has some limited functions but after using it a couple of times I realized it was rather useless.
I probably are going to end up bringing my phone while running to be able to use real training functions, which means that I have no use for the Gear S and will leave it at home.
You probably realize I am rather disappointed but would love to find out if there are any apps or possibilities to get the true potential out of the great Gear S.
Best regards,

I felt the same way as you. The hardware is fantastic, but the software is not... i really liked the fact having a little phone on my wrist in case of emergency or something, but there are just no decent running apps. And the fact that I can't pair a ble heart rate belt (built in sensor is not accurate enough) made me decide to sell the gear s. I will miss it, there were a few cool apps for it, but I really needed a decent sports watch. So I bought a garmin fenix 3 with the money I got from the gear...really happy now, and it does basic notifications too! Battery lasts weeks instead of hours. ...
Hey at least you gave it a try. Where I run and workout, I have needed to make a call for an emergency. Don't care how accurate my heart rate is when I'm looking for something to stop the bleeding, while calling for help.

Trail runner here. I bought the Gear S so I could leave my Note 2 in the car. I need a phone in case of emergency, and wanted to still be able to track my runs in stand-alone mode.
I started off with SHealth and got super frustrated by how long the GPS took to lock in on my location, especially since I got the Gear S in November, and standing around in the freezing cold is not my kind of fun.
I have since switched to Nike + in stand-alone mode. Bummer that Nike + does not measure elevation and HR, which is quite a let-down, but it is more important to me that I can hit start and the GPS starts tracking. I do this in stand-alone mode - no connection to phone at all:
1) Turn off Airplane mode (I always have it in aiplane mode when not running, mobile network is on when running, I feel it helps with tracking)
2) Turn on location tracking
3) Turn on Nike +
3) Start run
The tracking is instantaneous, and battery is down to about 60% after 2 hours, not too shabby, eh?
I have hand gesture wake disabled and 15 min screen dim. Once I am done with my run, I swipe left, then up to synch the latest run, since I always get the message that the latest run could not be synched automatically. Also, did you guys know if you swipe left during your run, you can see a map of your run? Accidental discoveries on my end.
I read that the latest update combines Nike + and SHealth and slowed down the GPS in the nike+ app. Can you guys confim this?
All in all I agree with you all: it's a great watch phone with shoddy software, meager apps in the app store, and the ones they have are mostly not stand-alone.
I'm glad i dicscovered Nike +, though I can't stand Nike shoes (Altra Zero all the way) and wish Nike would update this app to auto-pause and take advantage of the altimeter and HR sensors on the Gear S.
Maybe their app for the next Gear, the Oris, will do it.
I had high hopes for using Gear S for running. Unfortunately, the runner has to put more energy in setting up and controlling the watch than into the running itself. It is all too cumbersome and unreliable. The black-on-red quickly scrolling metrics on Nike+ are beyond stupid: impossible to read while running. It may be the 1st stopwatch/running application that doesn't show the running time.
What's next? A revolutionary wrist watch that doesn't show the time?!
S
Finally a good standalone application to run, unfortunately a fee but it seems better than s-health and nike running
Now free version...
No heartrate? Would be nice if crappy optical heart rate sensor was supported. Would be much nicer if bluetooth heart rate belts were supported! I wonder if its even possible for developers to support heart rate belts, because none of the existings apps support it yet...

Hi, finally... Where Can I download It. Most beautiful news of the week. Thanks!
hi, I downloaded from Samsung apps gear through gear manager ... it is located in the health and fitness
I would be happy to pay for this as long as some functions are added.
For Android wear there is a "killer app" called Ghost Racer that turns the Sony Smartwatch 3 into a runners favorite.
If this is going to be a "killer app" for runners on the Tizen platform and the Samsung Gear S (1 and 2) especially, some essential things are missing.
First of all - the running results must be able to be uploaded/exported to a popular running service such as runkeeper, strava etc.
More measurements needs to be added such as heart rate (internal or external bluetooth heart rate sensors), cadence and more.
Also - you need to be able to personalize your own running screen for what information you want to see (preferably several screens)
All these things work with Ghost Racer on Android Wear (on Sony Smartwatch 3)
If some of these things are added, this could be a really nice app that I would be glad to pay for it.
Is there an official website for the app or how can we get in contact with the developer?
Ooops - posted this first in the wrong Thread!
I've purchased the Paid App and an trying to figure out if the saved recorded files can be exported. Is anyone here rooted that could tell me whether there are any unique files that are saved to a Data folder? (No data is saved to the internal user storage folders)
While a standalone app that uses the watch's GPS is useful, this is really more of a Beta with very limited functionality. All it can really tell you is time, distance and pace. (And I don't yet know how accurate the watch GPS is going to be on distance). Plus the app turns the screen off immediate on the start of a recording, and only turns back on to displace pace etc. every mile - so pace data is not going to be too helpful. I can see my track on a (Google) map screen, but the track did not appear on my Google map history so there’s no export potential there.
A watch based app that uses the onboard GPS and records time, distance, pace (with configurable updates and audible output), and heart rate and that has exportable data in tcx or txt format is still needed.
But it seems that Nike+ running will work stand alone... so may meet most needs...
It's possible add a activity for gym workout in amazfit?
I'd be very interested in having that as well. As of now, with firmware 1.3.4f, the list of activities that you can track is really short: Run, Walk, Run indoor, Bike, Bike indoor, Trail run and Elliptical. When I used to have the MiBand 2, I'd have continuous HR on and track circuit training in Endomondo. Now, unfortunately, I am unable to do any of that
Any ideas if there's a way to:
- add more sports activities to the Sports tab?
- track circuit workouts in any way, ie in Endomondo?
Thanks

Continous HR is available in Amazfit, whats stopping you from doing what you were doing earlier?
Well if I log a circuit workout in Amazfii it doesn't get exported to Strava. I think I read somewhere that it only exports workouts where you get GPS fix, ie. when you're outside. Other than that, I'm too cheap to pay 50 bucks for premium Strava if I had that for free in Endomondo...
I'm in a similar boat, don't really want to pay premium strava, but thought that maybe I could use the "Elliptical" training mode for my gym workouts to track time and heart rate. I didn't realise you couldn't upload the workout itself somewhere after training though to analyse the heart rate graph if you wanted to for example.
@kopaczus, how do you currently track / log your gym and circuit sessions?

You are not the first that want's the non GPS activities
Thank you @fzelle
I don't have a watch yet, doing my research but I'll definitely look into this.
I'm sure I'm not the only one who wants non GPS activities or gym workouts. Hope this at least resolves the strava integration!

Although non GPS activities are not uploaded to Strava they can still sync to the Amazfit App so you have a record on your phone of riding time average HR and kCal burn.
Yeah, but that's useless if you have all your workouts in a single tracking app - Endomondo for me - to analyze your performance and plan ahead. Amazfit app is okay, but doesn't cut it.
Hi everone,
I am using Amazfit Stratos, Rom version 2.3.4.0 .I have a climbing activity on 1 spetember 2018.
The total mileage shown on watch & Amazfit App is 15.1km, but it only 12.2km (12.6km if consider 3d distance) via Strava or Google Earth after I download the gpx file, it is 23% different. The huge mileage different also happened when climbing mountain with elevation more than 500m, the others activity will have 3% to 6% different (the watch reported higher).
Anyone have this problem? How to solve it?
Is anyone noted that the elevation info always missing in the first few point of the GPX file downloaded?
Probably you had 3D Data on (search for what it means).

Yes, I know what is 3d data, I have set 3d data on for this climbing activity.
But it is 12.2km (without consider 3d) and 12.6km (with consider 3d), calculated by myself and checked using "Google Earth".
Will it because of movement of the hand where I wear the watch?
Sounds like a problem with the altitude measurement. I'm not happy with that too. Opening compass, doubletapping on it and waiting for a GPS fix before starting an activity is helping a bit.
I see several reasons for this:
1) The phone app is smoothing out the altitude data by using digital elevation map data, which at the end comes to different mileages.
2) In the mountains unprecise GPS signal can lead to significant differences, 30m 2D can sum up to 100m or more 3D, a balance between weak signal filtering and loosing signal is not easy to achieve.
3) During my tours I had another GPS running parallel. What made a real difference was, what I wrote under 2) and that my Pace did not exactly recognize pauses, which resulted in several pausing clusters which added to the mileage.
My conclusion:
I'm using the watch but after the activity I:
1) export it to tcx format via the exporter available in this forum.
2) manually delete the first trackpoints which either have no altititude or an unrealistic speed.
3) correct the altitude with external tools if I see it necessary.
Some of this after activity steps are done by the phone app automatically. Since the phone app is not giving me options for this I use other tool to know exactly what is going on.
Edit: The handmovement shouldn't influence outdoor results.
Did you check the altitude graph? It seems that run/walk use GPS for altitude whereas trail run/climb use the barometer. I still think it's related to 3D Data: the higher the altitude change, the higher will be the final difference in distance when compared to common "2D" data.

Also, latest international firmware for Stratos is 2.3.6.1, and you are still running 2.3.4.0... Latest Amasfit app version may make a difference too... Auto-pause may make a difference too: either disable or use something other than "stand still".

Are there other settings for Auto-pause than "on/off"? If so, where can I find them on the pace?
Profil Climbing and profil Trail Running have only Auto-pause "on/off" on ROM Pacificator WOS 2.6.3.1.

Not all activities have the other options, then you can try disabling it and use the button to pause manually. When recording walkings I found that it was too sensitive and it added a lot of bad data points to GPS when enabled.

I experienced the same phenomena. Thats why I stopped using "Auto-pause" and was wondering now about the possibility of finetuning autopause. Which activities have this, I couldn't find any?
Edit:
I found one: Cycling (1km/h steps)
Thats understandable but with the bad HDOP&VDOP filtering the Pace has, configurable Autopause in 0.1km/h steps could help in other activities too.

Run has an settings based on pace, Outdoor cycling has it based on speed. "Common" walk doesn't have it, it's either on or off.

the firmware now is 2.3.6.1 (2.3.4.0 is when that particular climbing activity on 1 september ),
I always off the 'Auto pause' except the first time i use the watch, because it keep on pausing (because my activity is inside the forest).
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1KSCwCRNmbnLdRgJaI1x9lkoogJN0Qv25
this is the list of all my activity, it is true that '3d data' will affect the total mileage. When I on '3d data' to climb the mountain, the total mileage is 20+% higher, but it is 3 to 5% higher when only the small hill.
However, activity after 29 september , '3d data' is set to 'off', the total mileage still 3 to 5 % higher.

those are the elevation profile of activity on '1/9 climb 3d-on', '3/11 walk 3d-off', '10/11 run 3d-off' & '17/11 trail run 3d-off', it seem that all altitude record by Amazfit is lower than which corrected by 'Strava' or ' gpsvisualizer.com' or record by handphone.
Any solution to keep the total mileage within 1 to 2%? after off the 'auto pause' & '3d data' ? 3 to 5% is still consider too high.

Having a look at your pictures your altitude data is much better than that what my pace produces before this was "corrected" by the phone app.
I guess that means it comes from the phone app.
So that leaves us 3 options:
1)
Those 3 altitude correcting sources you use:
Amazfit
Strava
GPS visualizer
are probably using different altitude maps - meaning you can't compare them and have to decide which one you use. I guess the one from amazfit
has a lower resolution compared to those from Strava&GPS visualizer. You probably can't change the altitude mapsource of those 3 apps - just decide which one you prefer and stick to it.
2)
If I'm using altitude correction I don't rely on either of those apps but use LIDAR maps which have a higher resolution and therefore representing the altitude of the area better:
http://data.opendataportal.at/dataset/dtm-germany
To do that I need the RAW data from the watch, which I get as mentioned via a python script as tcx files directly from the watch. Edit: One could use the gpx file which the watch procides under activities but the program I use for reprocessing the track does not recognize the included heartrate data. Otherwise internal created gpx and external created tcx don't differ much.
My resolution: another app
3)
The third option I see would be relying on the altitude data the watch provides, which I personaly found not reliable at all. I guess that has something to do with the filtering of weak signal from the gps chip, which is done by the gps firmware. To solve this problem we can only hope for some better filtering via GPS firmware by the manufacturer.
