Updating Stock-Rom and Magisk - LG V30 Questions & Answers

Hi guys!
At first I hope to be at the right place with my questions here. I've searched some Threads about my questions but I'm still not 100% sure how to go further now. Instead of "just trying and see what happens" I thought of "better ask again before you brick your phone! Safety first". So even if theres an answer I haven't seen, please be patient and take some consideration.
So thats whats actually running on my System:
* Stock OS (Software Version: V20d-EUR, Build OPR1.170623.026, Safetypatch March 2018)
* rooted with Magisk (v16.0; Manager 5.8.3)
The first question is about updating Magisk. Can I just update the Magisk (Mangager App and root) within the app in the meantime? There were several problems some month ago by just updating it without removing the old version before. Or do I need to remove old copies of Manager and magisk root before and flash it clean via TWRP?
Second question is about updating the ROM. How do I do this? I guess, its not possible to just click "update" in the update section of the settings, right? Do I need to unroot before? Just flash it the mentioned way or via twrp? Reflash stock recovery, unroot and then update? Or do I even have to do a clean install of the updated ROM?
I hope you understand all my questions, due to my english isn't the best. It's the first time I use a phone with just a rooted Stock Rom. Before I always used custom Roms (AOSP and stock based), and there the Update and flash-instructions are pretty clear and "simple".
Thanks in advance!

You're asking two separate questions and they have been answered before -- the updating stock stock ROM part I've answered many, many times in many, many threads.
1) update rooted stock rom which TWRP.
You cannot use "upgrade" because you are not pure stock, you have TWRP custom recovery.
You flash with dev patched LGUP in DL PARTITION mode and UNcheck recovery partitions to keep TWRP. Then boot to TWRP and reflash Magisk, as well as the no encryption and no root check files -- just like when you first unlocked bootloader and rooted.
If you use DL Partition mode and do not UNcheck the recovery partitions, then you will end up with pure stock and have to reinstall TWRP. If you somehow mess up, then that is also the fallback procedure -- flash the new KDZ in DL Partition mode (overwriting ALL partitions) and then reinstall TWRP and go from there.
1A) alternatively, RIGHT NOW you can just flash this 21A stock ROM (made from EU 21A KDZ by @westwood24) and just re-flash Magisk.
LG-H930 OPEN EU 21A ROM
https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-v30/development/rom-eu-lg-h930-21a-rom-t3830169
No, it's not the latest EU KDZ, but it's almost the latest. It's much newer than Europe 20D. You just flash it in TWRP and then re-flash Magisk. It's also much easier than using dev patched LGUP and DL Partition mode.
2) to update Magisk from 16.0 to 17.x, first flash the Magisk uninstaller in TWRP. Google it, download it. It will be a TWRP-flashable zip file. Uninstall current Magisk before you do #1, just to have it ready.
At this point in time I recommend Magisk 17.3. It has the latest Magisk Manager which doesn't crash on the Hide interface.

Not sure what to tell you on your first question as I'm still running magisk v16.0; Manager 5.8.3 myself.
To your second question, and I'm sure @ChazzMatt will speak when time allows, we don't take partial ota's while running custom recovery. The process will fail. We wait for the full updated kdz to be posted by LG, and then they eventually show up here in the forum. We have enjoyed flashable TWRP zips for some of the recent updates from @westwood24 ,20D for example. Otherwise you have to install the kdz using LGUP. There are instructions on how to do this in the forums.
Hope this helps a little. I'm pretty new to offering assistance, but still trying.

awesome, thanks for your quick and helpful response! really, thanks guys!
in case of flashing westwood24's ROM.. clean installation (wiping all needed partitions) or dirty flash over my running system? (i know, always backup before )

in your situation, dirty flashing should work. You're already on Europe firmware with TWRP.
But yes, backup first and then clean flash if dirty flash doesn't work right.

so meanwhile I updated Magisk and the stock-ROM with your help and your instructions! everything is working without any problems
updated the ROM with westwoods24 zip, dirtyflash
so thanks again!

[Guide] How switch to US Nougat ROMs, How to downgrade with Chinese Axon 7

Note: You can try this with EU ROMs but I'm not sure if it will work, and won't be testing to see if it works, since I see no reason to flash EU ROMs anyways.
I knew this from day 1, but was switching between various LOS ROMs so didn't have much inspiration to make a guide. Now i'm switching back to Stock-based ROMs (due to other roms having no dolby, no voice capture,...), I'll be making a guide
I'm not responsible for bricked device.
This is a guide for those who are facing issues when trying to flash US, EU stock and stock-based ROMs on the chinese axon 7 (no signal, no wifi, worse battery, or simply not booting after splash screen). Since downgrading is also a part of this guide, I will also be covering how to downgrade Nougat 7.1.1 ROMs back to 6.0.1 Marshmallow.
Important thing to note:
You must be on B13, 6.0.1 marshmallow with stock recovery, and please, DO NOT UPDATE TO B10 China NOUGAT or anything above ! This will cause a lot of problem, as from what I've deduced, US B19 is based on the China B09 update, anything above B10 won't be backwards compatible. and will cause problems like not booting, (or no wifi, signal etc after you recover the boot partition through recovery)
Now, if you're already on Nougat and want to try this guide, downgrade back to Marshmallow using EDL. Try this guide:
- Download B13 EDL (credits to djkuz from 4pda), extract it
- Download and install the latest Xiaomi MiFlash (stable or beta)
- Turn off your phone, plug it in to your PC, Hold Power + Vol Up + Vol Down, go to device manager, look for the "Port" section, and you will see something like Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008., if you see it, proceed down below. If not try again.
- right click , open properties on the Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008, go to port settings, if you see the speed is at 9600 bits per second (bps), change it to 128000 (you can skip this step, but doing it will increase your flashing speed)
- Open MiFlash, press select and pick the folder you extracted a few steps ago.
- Press refresh, if you see your device appearing on the list, press flash. (if some random errors appear, unplug the device, plug it back and immediately press refresh and press flash)
- After flashing you'll be back on B13 China Marshmallow.
REMEMBER, DON'T OTA UPDATE IF YOU WANT A SMOOTH TRANSITION TO US ROMS:
Now, to the good part:
- Download the B09 China OTA package from here (credits to Demons-77)
- put the package into your EXTERNAL sd card, internal won't do.
- reboot to recovery (Power + Vol Up)
- select the option with the word "sd" on it
- now go and pick the package that you just put in
- It will begin flashing and after that, you will have B09 China Nougat
- reboot to bootloader and install recovery (fastboot flash recovery *your file name*)
- after that you can install any roms you like, no need to backup and restore the boot partition every time you flash a US ROM, and you won't encounter strange issues like no boot, no wifi, etc.
TL;DR for those who already know how to do most of these: go back to China Marshmallow through EDL, update to B09 China Nougat with stock recovery, install TWRP and then flash whatever US stock or stock-based roms you want (just like how you would with a US phone)
Does custom kernels work after installing US roms?
I want to have a magisk compatible rom but I don't want to install custom roms other than stock.
Chinese roms doesn't boot with these existing kernels in this forum.

what do you mean by magisk compatible rom? I'm running the latest badboyz with magisk root here, no problems at all

Ok that's great. Last time I tried badboyz, I get issues with my signal keep restarting. I'm currently using chinese B01 mifavor5. all is well, just that I can't use magisk due to the stock kernel.
Thanks for your feedback OP.
Hi, great tutorial, but I got few questions. Now I'm on chinese nougat (B15) and if I downgrade to mm, will still I be able to do this operation? Can I relock bootloader on US rom? Because some apps like android pay, pokemon go and snapchat won't work.
@spiwar Mate I could kiss you right now. But could you just point me to one of the us stock ROMs to flash? (E.g, is this one alright - A2017UV1.1.0B19_StockSystem_by_DrakenFX.zip)
Is it safe to perform ota updates of the USA firmware on Chinese axons? Cheers

Downgrading IS a part of this operation if you're already on Nougat (you need to go back to MM before you can go B09 Nougat). Why relock your BL though? Magisk root can work with Android Pay, Pokemon Go AFAIK, not sure though (since I don't use any of those apps)

Yes that stock ROM will be okay. Personally I'm using the latest version of BadBoyz ROM.
No you can't. Because OTA updates requires the stock recovery, and your phone probably won't boot if you flash the US Stock recovery

Magisk won't work if you're using B10 Chinese as a base (as mentioned above), if you flash on B10 you'll have to flash the boot portion from the stock Chinese ROM for the US ROMs to even boot, and then you just lose magisk.
I see. Thanks for the tips. But I don't think I'll be coming back to b13 mm for that. I hate restoring data ang all the files in my internal storage.
Hi!
Could you please clarify me a doubt?
To follow this guide, must my device already be rooted?
Thanks!
Well, first part went well. After a lot of effort, because device was recognised as DFU. Anyway, I got it back to B13 with stock recovery.
On second part, when I try installing the FOTA update, it fails, giving me error: status 8. In update history, it says that the system package did not match the phone. Obviously I have A2017.
Any suggestions?

I need help updating my LG G5 and installing Magisk & Xposed

So, I've been "out of the scene" for 2 years +some months and I can't find clear answers to how I should do to get what I need. I need your help...
What I want to obtain: I want to have my LG G5 (H850) updated to the last firmware version (it should have andrioid 7, right?), rooted, and with Magisk installed. Xposed too, if it's possible in android 7. It is, right?
What I have right now: a rooted phone at FW version V10d-EUR-XX with Xposed installed (bootloader unlocked with the official method), android 6.0.1.
I don't know where to start from, since I can't find specific guides that tell me what to do, I have to ask here...
For example, do I have to reset the phone and install everything from scratch? Should I un-root the phone and install the firmware updates in the official way, or can I do it with some tool without un-rooting? Can I keep my installed apps & data? I don't know...
Thanks for any help... sorry if I'm demanding a lot, but I've always found it pretty hard to find definitive guides (or just definitive answers) in the android scene.
Well the first part is easy, use lg bridge to get the latest firmware..I'm doing it as I type..then I need to install adb and fastboot to install twrp and magical..
Latest firmware is 20x
Thanks for the reply.
So, if I already have TWRP, I can update the firmware with lg bridge and then I can simply install magisk? I thought I had read that if my phone is already rooted magisk can't hide the root, or something.
The firmware flash will take the phone back to stock..root gone..twrp gone..so install twrp through CMD window is needed..just make sure you have the magisk files on a SD card
Back to stock means, completely? All my apps and data gone? If yes, is there some tool to restore them easily after the firmware update?
And when I install magisk, if I need root do I simply have to install magisk's "root module"?
LG bridge shouldn't delete user data..I thought it did..but after doing it, it didn't..it just upgrades the firmware
Thanks. What about Xposed? Will it remain or will I have to install it again? And, since it requires root, does it mean that I have to enable root with magisk to use the Xposed modules otherwise they don't work? Like, that when I disable root they stop working?
Never used closed so I don't know..if lg bridge leaves user data alone it may leave root alone but then again it may flash stock boot image..so not sure really..
I don't mind reinstall lots of apps again as long as my pics are backed up.so I would reset phone...flash firmware..then twrp..then magisk..
Ok then, but I don't know which firmware I have to use.
For example, the latest in the list (here, ordered by date, descending) is "H85020t_00_TMO_COM_OP_0514.kdz" but it says "TPL - Europe - PL/Poland". My phone isn't from Poland, it's from Italy, and there's no firmware with that same date for Italy. Should I just use the newest one saying "Italy"? I dunno...
I also saw that, for the same country, there can be different updates for different providers, but I'm pretty sure my phone had none (it was "unbranded"). So which one should I choose?
LG bridge will automatically download the latest one for you..use error recovery
Oh, that's great.

There's update zips available in the development section. You just flash the COMPLETE version of one of those in TWRP and you're done.

Is it any better than using LG Bridge?
And would I need to make a Nandroid backup just in case, if I wanted to flash those zips, or is it safe? 'Cause I'm having trouble with that, as I wrote in the other thread...
Thanks
Ok I'm done, I updated the firmware with LG Bridge and installed Magisk & Xposed (through Magisk). Xposed isn't activating itself but that's another problem.

If you have the Pie update from firmware finder it's an approved ROM unless you have a modified recovery it checks and you wouldn't be able to install it if it wasn't approved so you probably have the latest approved ROM

Hi! Quick question. My BLA-L09 is on build number 8.0.0.131(c782). I'm rooted with Magisk via Pretoriano's TWRP using the all in one tool. I can't receive firmware updates because of this (they fail to install).
If I update to Pie, will I be able to root again with Magisk? How can make this update? I suppose I would need stock recovery back and don't know where to get it from it how to flash it. It was my first time doing this on a Huawei, I'm used to Samsung devices. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Nope, you won't. Any version from 8.0.0.146 and above will contain the new bootloader which won't let you unlock it or install twrp, magisk or whatever, most probably you will brick your phone like I did.
You'll be a lot safer to stay on what you're on. Huawei did a nifty development to make life miserable to anyone which likes to customize their phone. Maybe they should be called Huapple from now on...
I was in a similar situation as you, 141 if I remember correctly. Installed Xposed via magisk, got a bootloop, did a system restore via erecovery, got it working again and lost magisk/root so thought it would be the time to do the ota, didn't know about the bootloader change so found I was on emui 9, tried to install twrp but that bricked the phone. So I tried to do the system restore via erecovery again, but that didn't work.
After that tried every possible way (inc. paying funkyhw etc.) to recovery the phone, no way. If you try to downgrade it to a version before 146 it will hardbrick leaving you with a paperweigth.
So if I were you, I wouldn't touch a thing. I gave up and am waiting for my Oneplus 6, much better phone for this stuff.

There is a ResurectionRemix rom that can be used for that. Just search for RR-O-v6.0.0-20180402-bkl-OpenKirin.zip it should work as this one's flashable by twrp. I haven't tried it so can't tell if it does. I have the file but I don't know if it's complete as it only contains system.img which seems strange as normally there would also be a boot.img or at least a kernel.img

All about root/magisk/etc

Please read the whole post and answer all (if possible) of my questions, I don't mind if you give me links, I'll read myself. Just don't answer with 2 words that don't mean anything to me.
I want to get into rooting, custom kernals, etc but I really don't know where to start reading from. Anything I came across seems not detailed enough. My end goals are:
- To get enough info so I don't brick my phone or even if I do, I want to know how to fix it.
- Install a custoim kernel, so I can get battery life simillar to this guy.
- Get magisk working, so I can get AUX lenses on gcam working too.
In the past I have installed custom roms on my old LG G2 and everything was so simple, rooting was 1 click and installed TWRP too. Then just flashing roms, gapps, etc, but at the moment I feel my knowledge/experience is like I've never seen a computer or phone in my life.
1. First, where do I start from? Here? It doesn't say if I should have an unlocked bootloader, but other guides require that. I'm kinda confused.
2. If I need to unlock it, I read that it wipes everything, how do I backup without TWRP? Speaking of which, do I need it since there is no official one. Can I do a pre-root backup with OP switch and then restore from it after I've rooted and/or unlocked bootloader?
3. What's the deal with patched boot images, in what situation would I need one?
4. I've just updated to OOS 10.0.8.HD01BA. Does that make me unable to root with method from 1 because its so new or it doesn't matter? I've read somewhere that with OTA you lose magisk/twrp, is there a way to prevent that or I'll just have to do 1 again. Do OTAs return me back to stock kernel?
5. The guy above is using this kernel. It's supposed to be working on 7T Pro too. Has anytone tried it? If so how is it?
6. What about blu_spark kernel, is it good? Also I don't really get what the warning message mean :
"Reflash ROM -> flash TWRP --> reboot to recovery --> flash Magisk if you want (default, no plugins/modules) -> flash blu_spark."
How do I reflash stock rom? Also there is no official TWRP, so I guess it's better to not use this one or there is another way to install?
7. Speaking of which, what's the deal with FKM? What should I know about it?
8. If I root with 1, can I then install arter97's kernel with FKM?
9. How do I go back to stock kernel/rom/etc/lock bootloader in case I need warranty?
10. Is there anything that's recommended to read/know?

1. Unlocked Bootloader is always required.
2. Yes it wipes everything, OnePlus switch works fine for backup and restore
3. Since there is no TWRP you'll need one to root.
4. Not necessarily. You can just grab whatever patched boot image (preferably for BA), fastboot boot it to see if it works, if it does then do direct install in Magisk Manager. You can maintain root after an update following this
https://topjohnwu.github.io/Magisk/ota.html , and yes, it'll bring you back to stock kernel.
5. ?
6 &7. You can do ahead and try different kernels however I recommend arter97.
Since there is no TWRP you'll need FKM to flash the kernel.
8. Yes.
9. Rooting doesn't really void warranty, but I'd use MSMTOOL to get back to 100% stock.
For stock kernel you can flash stock (or patched) boot image depending wether you want stock or stock root.
To get back to stock ROM, either use MSMTOOL or fastboot ROM, you can find both in guides section.
10. Guides section for fastboot ROM and msmtool.
For AUX module.

Since there is no TWRP it can be tricky to get out of bootloop if you install a rogue module.

How To Guide Downgrade US OEM (DE2117) Android 12 firmware to Android 11 BEFORE installing Lineage!

Lineage installation on N200 REQUIRES that you are running Android 11 or phone will soft loop after installing the Lineage boot.img
If you are updated to Android 12 firmware and want to install Lineage, you MUST downgrade first to:
DE2117 OEM Android 11 FINAL OTA
WARNING: This WILL erase all user data.
1. Place the firmware .zip file in the user root of internal phone storage.
2. Sideload OnePlus firmware Downgrade Tool on phone and use tool to flash the Android 11 firmware.
There is an Emergency Firmware install tool that OnePlus posted to the OP forum that does NOT check root status when the need to downgrade back to A11 was first acknowledged due to modem issue with first A12 OTA release.
This file was removed in a few days when they posted the official Downgrade tool replaced it.
I have used this tool to upgrade DE2117 C_16 to DE2117 C_17 while rooted and the built in upgrade tool failed at 37%.
Nice, first thanks for the hard work you're putting in. Second, is there an advantage to converting first to DE2117 then installing lineage as opposed to just installing lineage from DE2118 that you know of? I know in the other post you answered my other question stating that the Lineage will install on either so I wasn't sure if I'd get any benefit from starting over and converting my DE2118. TIA

Lineage is using own kernel and boot.img on A11 so in the short run it is not going too make any difference, but when Lineage moves forward to A12 the OEM Firmware has newer drivers and is updated sooner, has more OEM features and bugfixes as well as no carrier bloatware.
It is possible that OP will neuter the Carrier firmware with an OTA update to prevent cross flashing device away from the Carrier rom in the next OTA update by preventing fastbootd from flashing the us oem from a carrier phone.
They have already removed fastboot boot command to boot a boot image without flashing it for test before you flash and to allow Magisk to make a backup of the original boot.img before adding Magisk.
I would convert NOW, before they decide to slam the door on this ability with a future OTA that will not allow you to downgrade and prevent this as they are under contract with the carriers to not allow this to be done.
Ok, thank you for the explanation. Guess I'll back everything up and convert it.

This worked perfectly after following your convert guide and upgrading to 12. Downgraded back to 11 so I could install lineageOS. Thanks again!
This reddit post has a link to an English version of the downgrade apk which makes it a little easier.

Did you remove root (Restore boot.img) and then factory reset?
You will loose all data doing this anyway.
I m trying as well .. but stuck with verification failed message just as scanman0 I m on stock android12 no root if anyone know how to fix it ... please assit
I just downgraded. Make sure you remove root via magisk. Then proceed to rollback to Android 11. Everything worked fine. I'll install lineage tonight when I get home.

I did not have to remove root. I used the version posted that does not check for root but maybe there's a different reason.
Does the downgrade apk have to be sideloaded via ADB?

Just place apk in phones working directory, same path where your downloads folder is. Then install from there like any other apk and run. I also kept the FW file in the same directory but I'm not sure if that was necessary.
So, just to confirm, I press "local install" and select the firmware zip and it closes? Is the tool supposed to do anything else or am I good to flash LineageOS?

Ummm if I remember correctly hit local install and then it will prompt to point towards which FW to use. After you hit it, it will go back to the previous screen, I think verify and unpack it, then install it. Mine did appear like it was doing nothing after picking the FW and so I picked again which screwed things up so just wait after picking, it should start.
After its done it will give a message saying to restart phone I think for it to take effect, then after you restart it should ask to wipe phone, then restart again and you'd be in A11 presumably. Once in A11 your good to follow the normal procedure to install Lineage. This is all from memory though so I MAY have missed something but I don't think I did.

When you say "screwed things up" what do you mean? How did it effect the install?

Nothing major, caused the UI to glitch out and made it seem like the process was stuck at 81% but when I closed the app and tried to do it again it jumped to 100 and said to restart the device.
I've downgraded a second time (I'm very indecisive on which OS I want to use) and that one went as expected since I knew to give it a second to start doing its thing.

Weird, for me it just closes the app and does nothing, both the official and emergency ones. I even tried adding it to magisk's deny-list.
But I just restored the boot image via magisk (didn't restart) and it works now...

Yes I factory restored the phone and tried again. Still fails every time
Has anybody had any luck figuring out the verification failed message? I too have tried both the official and emergency apps, of course I can't read the actual message in what I presume is Chinese, but it doesn't do anything and the other version says verification failed. Have not rooted. Kind of at a loss right now and all I want to do is install Lineage! I've already got my unlock token from OnePlus, but my understanding is that the phone still needs to be on A11 before installling Lineage.
