GOAL HAS BEEN REACHED, THANKS EVERYONE!! PLEASE STOP DONATING.
Cleaned up first post as requested by XDA Moderators. Cosmin will maintain donators, profile and donation link for reference and status in the second post of this thread.
According to the XDA rules about bounty/fundraiser threads I would like to quote the following from moderator "Funk Wizard": There is absolutely NO obligation on the developers part to release a final product. Although this is what everyone wants, the entire reason for a donation drive in the first place is because it's not the easiest thing in the world to do. This means it may not even be possible in the long run. There's a great potential for hurt feelings and "bad juju" if people donate with the expectation that a final product WILL 100% be released. Donations should be seen as support towards a best-effort on the part of the developer."
THE GOAL HAS BEEN REACHED. YOU CAN STOP DONATING NOW.
I've been the maintainer (and up-bringer) of devices in the past, and I'm also a member of the LineageOS team. I've worked on Mix3, Mi 6 / Mix 2, and Mi4c .
As I think a lot of people here bought this phone with the intention of being able to eventually run AOSP on it I would like to start a fundraiser for buying myself the device.
The goal of the fundraiser is to buy myself a Mi 9, which will be used for developing a stable device tree and kernel, and eventually providing official LineageOS builds.
I'll update the status of the fundraiser as quickly as possible.
Donation link (please mention Mi 9 fundraiser): https://www.paypal.me/demon0000

A few other notes:
- As soon as goal is met fundraiser will be stopped and I will request to close this thread.
- If the goal will not be met within a certain time and you feel like you "wasted" your donation, feel free to PM me.

Sry but that sounds like begging for money. I think it should be a voluntarily gift!
I don't say you need to do something for free, but it sounds a lil bit weird. Don't be mad at me guys.
I wanna donate but we are under sanctions sorry

Nobody is obligated, it is completely voluntarily. I see where you're coming from though
To a lot of people a few euros isn't much, but for Cosmin buying this phone is quite a lot of money (and simply not a possibility within the blink of an eye). He will have to to spend a lot of time and effort which will probably make it a well worth voluntarily gift if you bought this phone for AOSP.

Hey guys here's what you have been waiting for. The unofficial official release of CM9 for the Samsung Galaxy Player/S Wifi 4.0 (a.k.a YP-G1). The TeamSupernova is proud to be the first of porting it.(with some exterior help) It is built on the latest commits from the stable CM9 4.0.4 source tree. This rom isn't different from any other stock CM9 but it's more streamlined and it's more official to release it like this.
Here's the context of how we have made it possible (thanks Hanthesolo for this story):
Firstly, excuse my cheesy biblical writing, I just have always wanted to write something in that format .
In the beginning (march 2012), there was hanthesolo. He saw the Galaxy Player forums, and all that he saw was good. This man started creating new work for the Gplayer forums, a and gained a small following. There was just one issue that concerned him: NO ICS!
In light of this, this man created a thread, to collect all ICS development, into one easy-to-read forum. Other began to follow him, zaclimon, Ijimaniac, and several others. Ideas flew fast and furious, but hope was waning quickly. A kernel would have to be created from scratch, a monumental task that had not been undertaken by any man so far.
All was quiet for awhile, and people began to slowly fade out, until only hanthesolo and zaclimon remained, slowly trading ideas and guesses over several weeks. Then a new disciple arrived: neyodmium. This korean (?) developer brought a different kind of kernel experience to the trio, and development began in earnest, with zaclimon and neyodmium trading work, while hanthesolo contributed where he could. One unsurmountable issue arose: this magnificient kernel, the likes of which had never lit up these forums before, would merely boot into recovery, not into Android.
Then Oisis came around, hearing our desperate cries for help. Like a moses, he guided his flock in the right direction, squashing issue after issue, until a monumental day arrived: August 13, 2012. On this day, ICS was finally created in Cyanogen's own image, and it was good.
Then increased development began, with hanthesolo squashing CM9 bugs, while zaclimon, neyodmium, and Oisis working feverishly on the kernel.
But an issue occurred, a wrench in the works. Thine enemy's name is GL, SuperNOva. GL would not cooperate, acting as a barrier between usable ICS, and frustrated efforts to fix it. But one day, the magical variable was flipped, and the builds booted! About this time there was a github mishap involving a bad I9000 push that stopped things for about a week, but that's another story.
What happens next? I dunno, but I will update this story when it happens .
NOTE: This does NOT represent anyone's political or religious standpoint, or the way anyone is viewed. It was created as a humorous way to explain our situation to users.

What's working:
Boot
Wifi
GPS
ADB
Accelerometer
Sound (voodoo module is included inside the kernel)
H/W acceleration (75/80% complete, video acceleration missing)
Deep sleep (MUCH better battery life than older ICS builds)
Native USB mount storage
FM Radio (download the spirit fm radio app from the store)
OC up to 1.2 gHz.
You tell me
What's not working:
Bluetooth
Camera (rendering is pretty crappy)
Recovery (well it does work but it can't reboot correctly to the system)
US home button (I do have a workaround for the moment)
Built-in CPU tuner (for OC/UC)

Instructions
Note: Please backup your efs in case of something goes wrong (the zip should backup it but we're never too sure) To do so execute this command:
Code:
dd if=/dev/block/stl3 of=/sdcard/efs.rfs
You will need heimdall for this, if you don't know how to use it here's a guide on how-to:
DISCLAIMER: if you don't know how to use heimdall to reflash to stock (if needed) then you shouldn't flash this rom.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1922461
1. Unzip the package which contains the zip and the boot.img.
2. Put the rom zip into the root of the sdcard.
3. Flash the rom using CWM. If you don't have it, please flash a custom kernel .(I recommend terrasilent)
4. When you're in CWM6, reflash the rom again.
5. After the second flash, flash the gapps zip. (if you have it)
6. Wipe your data.
7. Reboot into download mode and flash a GB kernel. (preferably the one you had before)
8. Reboot again into download mode after getting into CWM5.
9. Flash the boot.img included in the package by using heimdall at the KERNEL partition.
10. It should reboot and you will have your bit of Icy sandwich!!
NB: If you want the soft keys, (regardless of the reasons, RECOMMENDED FOR US PLAYERS, download the zip for the keys and flash it over CWM)
Here's the instructions in a more concrete way (Thanks Daniel644 for the video)
For those having problems with the encryption thing, here's the fix (Thanks Goldflame09)
For those if you who install and get the encryption error, follow these steps and it will work.
1) Hit reset tablet on the error page.
2) Go into recovery
3) Wipe data/factory reset.
4) Reboot system now.
5) As soon as the screen shuts off, go into download.
6) Flash terra silent kernel.
7) Let it boot into recovery and ignore all the errors.
8) Go to advanced and reboot download.
9) Flash the boot.img again.
10) Should be all set as long as you don't go into recovery.

Yes, no ETA's. Me, zaclimon and Oisis are all balacing ery busy schedules to get this to you guys as fast as possible. Me and zac stay up until almost midnight many nights testing and developing, and Oisis has to be up a 2-3 in the morning JUST to be able to talk to us, not to mention having to balance a VERY busy school schedule, our individual social lives, etc.
So please stop asking us for ETA's, or if this will be fixed by X, or that by Y, because we're developing this for the benefit of the community. We're not getting paid, or gaining any tax breaks, we're just a couple of guys who have decided to unlock the complete potential of this device, and if I do say so myself, I think we're doing a pretty dang good job on it, all things considered.
My rant is done, but guys, please understand what we're going through to be able to get this to you.

No problem, it's not directly directed at you, it's just directed at the entire community. It's an unfortunate fact that most people these days forget how much time devs spend working on this stuff for them, which is understandable, since we don't share the development process with you guys. Just keep in mind that it's normally a lot more time-consuming to accomplish a task then we let on.

Rectum dictis! :good:
(Sounds dirty, right? It's actually Latin for, "Well said!")
Just thought I'd brighten the mood with some humor.
well this time, i think asking ETA is less reproachable. The team or zaclimon individually already posted the new thread about the coming ROM.
It's like advertising Avengers 2 is coming out but not telling people when it will be available.
it's natural for people to question when is it actually going to come out.
I think it's different from the typical ETA inquiry that i usually encounter.

No, sir, I do believe ANY ETA inquiry is against the forum rules.
XDA does not operate like the movie industry, nor like any commercial industry for that matter.
Outside of XDA, teasers and release announcements lead to inquiries, which may or may not be answered. Within XDA, teasers, promotions, and/or announcements are for the sole purpose of notification only. When the project is ready, it is ready. No questions asked.

As I think more, I'm not sure if the question"(coming soon) in how long"? can be even considered as ETA inquiry. (connotatively)
There was no mention of WIP nor that the work is not complete yet.
In CM9's Camera's case, I'm also opposed to ETA inquiries.
People know that the work is in progress and the time required is indefinite.
But in this case, there was no hint that the work was unfinished nor about the uncertainty of completion.
zaclimon said that it's coming soon.
In Supermaster's thread about Camera WIP, none says "coming soon"
I think the term "coming soon" should be used more carefully because it means that the producer is somewhat ready and definite that the work is going to be finished and released on the specific time.
and i don't think that asking when the producer would wish to release is the "ETA inquiry" that people get attentive of.
I'm not trying to provoke any fight in this forum, I don't want to flame anyone and cause trouble.
I admire you guys' work because I'm a complete noob.
Of course i've never been developer and never felt how it would be to be asked of ETA.
But I just want people to ease up the tension in this forum.
Peace.
My apologies if my words appeared as flaming. Never were my intentions to flame you, I only wanted to point out that XDA is a not-for-profit forum/project, and all of the work that the developers do here is on a goodwill basis.
Those who ask for ETA's do not realize how much work it takes for a GOODWILL developer to manage life, work/school, and development on their own dime and time.
It's like a homeless person coming into your house, just after you've worked a full day and managed family and other obligations. You've just started cooking dinner, but you're all ready stressed and tired from a full day when the homeless person asks, "Hey, bud! When's dinner going to be ready? I'm hungry! C'mon Hurry up!"
Just sayin'.

Thank you brother's.
Thank you for your hard work every one, the amount of progress made in the last few days has been exciting, and it has been fast-paced.
Thank you immensely @UnjustifiedDev and @DrakenFX for all the hard work. You guys rock!
Sent from my ZTE A2017U using Tapatalk
Thank you both @UnjustifiedDev and @DrakenFX for all you have done and will do!! Much appreciated gents and a donation will be forthcoming!
Well good work, but if the sound on CM can't be improved, CM is pretty much dead on this phone for daily driver usage. You can't use it to make calls, you can't use it to hear music via speakers and the headphone sound is very low end quality. So after 2 days CM i had to go back to stock.
Definately a HUGE thanks to both of you for your months of hard work! More than just the ROMs, but all the little things along the way!
Seriously, thank you @Unjustifieddev and @DrakenFX.
@UnjustifiedDev and @DrakenFX, the Axon 7 community really appreciates the time you put in to make CM a reality on this device.
I've had half a dozen Android phones. If I remember correctly, my first true smartphone was a Palm Pre, which I rooted and tinkered with for hours on end. Then I got the HTC EVO 4G, the Pantech Burst, the Galaxy S5, the OnePlus 2, and now the Axon 7.
Let me tell you, we all breathe a huge sigh of relief and share immense feelings of joy when we discover that new ROMs have been made available for our devices. But more importantly, we get the feeling that we are not alone.
It's these shared feelings and interests that bring device communities like this together, and guys like you are the catalysts that ignite the spirit of development in all of us.
By the way everyone, I'm drigg. I've posted on XDA before, but I wanted a fresh start. Nice to meet you all.
Thanks
Thanks to @Unjustifieddev and @DrakenFX. I can now use my A2017. I live in Australia and bought the phone even with some reviews saying that the software isn't very good, thinking it might be atleast usable. But it was much worse. I am on optus network and there was constant disconnection and battery drain. Seriously the chinese rom is very very bad. Rooting and using this breathed a new life to the phone. How can a company get so bad in ROm dept. would like to donate some money later as well.

Let's keep the comments ON-TOPIC and respectful.
If you can't post without violating XDA Rules, simply don't post at all.
Your cooperation is appreciated.
I'd like to thank you two, as well as everyone who has contributed to this community. Y'all rock!
After doubting for many weeks on end (After having lost a EUR 300 Oneplus One and a EUR 265 Nexus 5X in about two months) I finally bit the bullet this evening. SUCCESS!
A huge thanks to @tennear for guiding me in this whole process, I owe you man.
I strongly recommend A2017G users to flash TWRP using his method and after that unlocking bootloader via TWRP via Starvirus' method. Tenfar's guides are no good for A2017G devices, the risk is too large.
Thanks @DrakenFX and @Starvirus for the guides on unlocking the BL using adb, adb sideload and TWRP.
A big thanks also goes to @Unjustified Dev and @DrakenFX for the wonderful CM13. It might contain a few bugs, I'm pretty sure I'm going to use this as a daily driver. I have yet to check out Z.A.D. M.i.x.
As a means of paying back to the community I have put aside some cash to donate to the aforementioned users. I will also write a guide that is as detailed as possible for A2017G users. Currently, the information concerning how to relatively safely unlock BL and install TWRP for this model is way too cluttered and complicated.

Ummm, I don't intend to give a lot of customization. Only the necessary ones. Plus, baby ROM is what you call this then I must say you should grow up from features and ****. I believe in performance and battery with the right amount of customisation.

Yes, sorry, have been busy, I'll post a build from Very late August as currently I have issues with building that I need help resolving. Mainly because LineageOS moved to new kernel configs for the regular S5 and so I need to modify one in with the Sport stuff...
Also I currently took my dad's S5 Sport back to stock so I cannot test myself at the moment. If anyone has a spare S5 Sport for testing, I'd gladly take it to finish this ROM and make it official

No need to apologise, I appreciate what you're doing and I understand it takes some time.
If you need another S5 Sport, you can get one here https://m.ebay.com/itm?itemId=112560349301&fdback=1
I bought mine from the same seller, no issues. It even arrived days early!

Nice! My father is considering a new phone here so I'll probably hold out for a bit of time and see if that happens. If not, I'll try and scrape some extra money together for another phone... I have a few to many because of other projects, AKA Android 4 Lumia so I have like 7 windows phones
Anyway, I'll get that build posted tonight and update the OP

It would be great if you could add Substratum support. I just flashed a CM14 build and Substratum in Legacy Mode left me with a bootloop.
Link below may provide some info on how you can do this...

Sorry about that mate! I should update the OP to mention this for now. I'll try my best to add support but right now I need to make the trees build able again with a new kernel defconfig. The current build is good in everything else?

To me the biggest issue is the white background though... and since this phone has a AMOLED screen well the benefits of a black theme to me are higher... 1 Eats less battery (turns pixels off), 2 Easier on the eyes, especially in dark places, 3 to me it just looks cool.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Nougat got better with the black interface but Oreo went to white so yeah...

I've decided to put up with default theme for a while... CM13 build from other thread was too buggy.
Camera and Flashlight from the pull down notification bar don't work. Got a Substratum Theme to function in Legacy Mode, but it had some bugs.
The built-in root is adb only. I have the file to enable apps you may want to share it. I'll upload it here sometime, also will give you a logcat..
Also I got ViPER Audio working with the IO fix.. Had to set SELinux Permissive to install the drivers.
And lastly, Changing the GPU Governor in Kernel Auduitor causes a reboot.
Here is a zipped Logcat, Bug report, and the SU Addon to add root access for apps.
SU Addon gets flashed in TWRP.
If anyone needs root, then you can find it on the Extras tab of the LineageOS downloads page. I'll try to work on the phone today but my knowledge is not very good still

Hello Everyone,
I'm an old school guy, and I believe in true freedom of expressions. As such I would like to stop using programs and services from companies that censor information. Yes I believe in preserving the absolute Freedom of expression is what allows us and children to have freedom. I don't care if I agree/disagree/indifferent of the views.
What's the best ROM to get away from Google, MS?
TIA.
So corny today but so true, those who did not learn the lesson of the past are doomed to repeat it.....

Yeah, CrDroid is an oculist distribution bearing the logo of the "satan". Think I'd rather not have a phone ever than to use the "all seeing eye, aka eye of the horus".
That's something I want to get away from.
Got any others?

I think they just chose it because it looks cool. But if it really is something you can't overlook, then try Nusantara:
[ROM][UNOFFICIAL][11] Nusantara v3.2 [AOSP][10-Sept-2021]
/* * Your warranty is... still valid? * * I am not responsible for bricked devices, dead SD cards, * thermonuclear war, or you getting fired because the alarm app failed. Please * do some research if you have any concerns about features included...
forum.xda-developers.com
It has a vanilla (no Gapps) build, which is what you're looking for, I'm pretty sure.

Don't know much about Google Assisstant replacements; I don't really use that sorta stuff. Maybe make a forum-post in general? Might find an answer there.
Never heard of Pine64, but it looks interesting to read into. I'm more of a hobbyist when it comes to android and ROMs. Thanks for letting me know it exists
Hopefully Nusantara works out for you.
