Is there a way to replace the memory card? - Nexus 9 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I was wondering if it was possible to upgrade the memory card? The limit is 16/32GB which is pretty small (if you want to save movies to it). I understand that I could just add a micro USB adapter for just that too, but I was curious if this could be done as well. I wish the RAM mod was further investigated too, but unfortunately it was short lived. Any input is welcome, thanks.

Probably better off posing this question in a more popular device thread, but probably not referencing this device as everyone will tell you to come here. Use that info to get an idea of what's involved in a broader sense.
I'm going to guess the answer would be technically yes, but soldering it correctly might be beyond most people's skill. I'm just guessing though. The other issue could be firmware including bootloader. Is it saved on the nand or stored elsewhere? If shared on the nand, this would be much more impossible to pull off.

[Q] Important questions for choosing, NT vs KF

I am very Noob in this, but I have questions that I am sure that are gonna help a lot of people.
I am going to buy a cheap e-reader/tablet, and I have seen that the two best options are Nook Tablet and Kindle Fire.
The difference between the prices is 50USD, and I accept them. But I want to permanent root my device, so, the question is:
If I permanent root the Nook Tablet, will I be able to access all the device memory? Because without rooting it is limited to 1GB.. Will I be able to put for example 4gb of video without MicroSD?
Because if I cant access all the storage, I will have to buy a 16gb microSD.. So the difference between the two devices will be about 80USD, which is quite a lot.
The other questions are: Can you really access the Android Market and download apps if you root the Nook Tablet?
What does that means that the bootloader in the Nook tablet is locked? Is the rooting going to be unstable for that?
Thank you very much.
All these questions have been answered to other threads. Please read or search for them.

I have been in a lot of forums, and I know perfectly that before you ask, you have to search for your questions. I have been about half hours looking for them, and I have found different answers, so I need the real one.
Some answers say that you can only access all the memory for the installed apps, but not for all the medias.. others say that you always need a MicroSD card.. so, tell me please, which of those threads is the truth?

The first one. You install to the internal, and can make folders (I suggest putting them in data or media, and not anywhere in the main directory) anywhere. Downloads from other app stores and ebook stores save all over the place, but usually by default to an SD card. Just learn to use a file manager and expect to root it.
It's easier to get every other application/store/video to run on a rooted Nook Tablet (compared to a KF), but it'll be much easier to make custom roms for a Kindle Fire due to the bootloader. What this means is that: if you have a kindle, you will sit around fiddling with rooting and unrooting if you want their Instant Video to work, until a whole new rom (entire OS overhaul) is available. In comparison you can root a Nook Tablet, and put whatever you want on it and run it and most things will work (if they're tablet apps, and depending on what stores you use), but it will be much harder to load a new OS on it, if ever. For someone who wants to hack and mod a tablet, they will want to do it on a device that is supports it (KF). For someone that wants to read books, play games, watch videos, read comics, very easily right off the bat (with 10 min of work), the Nook Tablet is better (and has a few important higher specs).
And the suggestion to find the many threads that answer your question wasn't "go out there and find other forums with lots of conflicting answers" but *SCROLL DOWN.*

There are definitive answers, so I don't know that you've searched all that much. However, to answer some of your questions:
Yes, you can install the market once rooted, and the bootloader being locked means that the simplest solutions for installing new ROMs will not work. People are trying workarounds at the moment, but there is no ETA. This has no bearing on having the device rooted.
I think it is also important to mention that until a verified means of preventing OTA updates to the system is created, it is possible your device to become un-rooted after it updates itself.
So far, I have seen no sure-fire ways to prevent the NT from updating itself - only guesses. So your "permanent root" may not be so permanent for the time being.
1. Yes
2. Yes
3. Means custom roms can't be created as of yet. Give it time.
Why do so many people keep repeating "over the air updates may remove root..." Maybe it will, maybe it won't. You must accept an OTA update. If you are worried about root, don't accept the update until you know what it will do. Seems simple to me.
Is there even a patch for the zergrush expolit?

For the KF at least, its coming in the form of silent updates. Once you're on wifi, the update is pushed down.
Honestly its a hazard of the game until we have different roms. If they plug the hole, they plug it. I'm holding out for the ROM solution, regardless of elegant/inelegant the solution proves to be.

True enough. Often inelegant=most effective. Same when I first rooted my TF101. Used the ADB root. Which meant I had to self-teach ADB. Best thing that happened as not only I achieved root but learned something new that has helped with other devices.

If the NT does OTA updates like the NC there is no prompt to accept the update, just a message that the update occurred. It is not the same as a phone.

NdefFormattable

So I bought 5 MiFare cards... they report NdefFormattable, but are not yet formatted to store NDEF data. I know there was a bug with us not being able to format them, but Google fixed it (http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=22258). Is there any way we can integrate whatever the fix was to the various ROMs?
I'm not sure if this is relevant and/or helpful, but it had some seemingly useful info.

I know Java, but I've never done Android programming... if there's a workaround explained in that, can someone explain it to me without the Android references? haha!

Not sure. I haven't even used the NFC for this device yet. Maybe it'll come with ICS.
Hmm... does anyone know of a way to override the check that Android does (as mentioned in the blog link) about it not already being android.nfc.tech.ndef or whatever (even though it reports that it is ndefformattable) and force it to write a raw card image? He said something about that, and I'm sure I can find one for my card. Sorry, that's confusing to write lol!
Scratch all that, I think I get how to write a tag using that code he gives. I just need a dump of a card identical to mine! BUT I can't find any... I found out that my cards are MIFARE Classic Mini (320 bytes, 5 sectors, 4 blocks each). Does anyone have a tag with the same chip in it? If so, can you puh-wees dump it for me? =D
good luck man
That's completely irrelevant... and for the record, NFC payments are the same as Visa's PayWave et al. Anything that uses the 13.56Mhz frequency is compatible at the hardware level.
I'm saying I bought some writable cards but they're not formatted NDEF yet... and I need a dump from someone that has an identical card so I can format it since we don't have Google's fix integrated into our ROMs yet.

Photos of disassembled hard-bricked SGP 4.0 US

Lamenting over my hard-bricked SGP 4.0, a pretty naive thought occurred to me, that is, what if the so-called internal SD card really is a "card" and can be replaced? Of course not, but I had to see it myself, so I just disassembled it and took some photos of the internals. SGP 4.0 US is pretty easy to disassemble, I guess, and here are a few photos (with S/N airbrushed). My hardware assembly experience is back in early 90s, so it won't apply to modern day assembly technologies at all, but it looks like the Toshiba is the internal SD memory chip (wonder why Samsung uses Toshiba flash chip for its memory?). I didn't peel off the sticker, but the chip under the white sticker looks like the CPU. Near the presumably Toshiba flash chip, there does seem to be a socket for an external programmer, so I guess if I can get this to a service center (like in Korea), I guess they might be able to reflash the internal flash memory chip using their programmer device, but it's purely my totally naive imagination. Anyone have some comments? Anyway, enjoy!
Also, I didn't want to start another thread for this, but I'm wondering if anyone could point me to the right direction about the ICS port going on in the development board for SGP 5.0 US? I'm not sure if it's intentional or not, but I'm finding that the dialer is missing there (is it that ICS totally is without a dialer? I doubt so), and seeing a player like SGP as a VoIP device, I think it's still important to still have a dialer. I can't yet post a question there as a noob, so I'm wondering if someone could see this and convey this comment to the developers there. I'd also love to try tinkering with the sources, build the rom image and try those with my SGPs. I'll probably first try to do it with ambrice's CM7 for SGP 5.0 US, and if I can get any assistance or advice from anyone, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks for all your great work!
Nice post! But sorry to hear that your player got hard bricked.
I have noticed that you have both versions if the players. If you truly have no use for your 4.0 anymore, maybe you could consider donating it to a dev who specializes in hardware (like adamoutler or someone else?)? I'm sure he or someone else could make good use of your device, and maybe possibly even prevent your situation from happening to someone else in the future with an unbrickable mod. Or maybe some experienced dev could unbrick it and come help with the ics progress... We certainly do need all the devs we can get.
Again, this is just a suggestion; I hope I didn't sound selfish or anything.

I'd be happy to follow your suggestion (and you don't sound selfish at all), but unfortunately the device is not my personal property, not at my disposal... Sorry... Maybe I should revive my old-days hardware experience and try to make some contribution with this... Thanks.

USB DAC

Hallo everyone!
First of all - I got myself a smartphone just yesterday for the first time ever, so yes.. I'm even less than a Noob.. you can call me noob^2..
Second: i searched the forum but I did not find a similar topic. Either there is no similar thread yet, or I don't know how to use the Forum search engine properly.. If so, please excuse!
I have a SGS2 i9100 (not G) and android 4.0.3. Not rooted (don't know yet how to so..)
I would like to replace my ipod with the SGS2, but the soundquality is very poor. I would like do connect the phone to an usb DAC (fiio E7 for example), but i read that it is not possible to bypass the internal crap yamaha-DSP. So is there any possibility, hack, or whatever, to send the pure, unprocessed mp3 data to the DAC via USB OTG??
Thank you a LOT!
Not currently possible with the SGS2 & highly unlikely to ever be. Devs who have been asked to have a look at it have all gone 'Nup' because of Samsung's proprietary/closed source drivers & so on. To give you an idea of what devs are up against/why nobody will tackle this, read this post.
Only way it will ever happen is if you code it yourself, or a dev with a lot of time on their hands (there aren't really any of these; the development they do now is done in their spare time & on top of the jobs they have) who actually wants to use this themselves.
Don't ditch your iPod.

Well, that's a pitty!
I read somewhere that android 4.1. (Jelly Bean) supports that USB audio out capability. Is that true, and does that mean, that if I could install jelly bean on the s2, I could use usb audio?
Another, probably stupid, question. Is it possible to install the 'not touchwized' - original - version of android on the s2? Would that make usb audio work, or is it a matter of hardware and drivers??
Thak you for your reply!
Hardware & drivers. Won't work no matter what. Unless a dev makes it work as I said in my previous post.
So right now, no one is trying to make the s2 work..? Would donate if someone succeeds..!
What about the Galaxy nexus phone and about the Galaxy s3? Do these phones support usb audio, even though they are from samsung?
1) No, offering money won't make any difference. There have been threads made in General where people have pledged differing amounts of money; in one thread I offered $20, all up maybe 6-7 people pledged money totaling around $150 to get it working. No devs took up the offer. Seriously, this is something that is very difficult & time consuming to get working, it's not simple like some people seem to think. It just isn't going to happen. Money isn't the issue, the issue is time and/or a desire on the part of a dev to use this feature themselves. No dev so far has had either of those nor a desire to get this working.
The fact it doesn't work on stock roms should tell you something.
2) You're asking in the wrong place, ask in the forums for those phones.

[Q] Software dev questions

Seeing as I don't have 10 posts yet, I have to post here -.-
So here's my down into the rabbit hole story and question;
Anyhow, in regards to software dev, the M$ sdk is sorely lacking in ability to mess with stuff (i.e. contacts, keyboard, etc). So, I decided to look further into how to go about a semi legal way of making a native app to run on it, fell into the qualcomm stuff, and gobi stuff, ended up looking more into the processor and gpu, etc. Ran into the 8960 hardware hacking thread (very informative if you want to help find a way to jtag it). Which lead me to here (even though I've been watching these threads with great interest) to see the status on the unlocking of the device.
Anyhow, I want to know, because I'm fairly new at this I only have a basic understanding of how it all fits together, what would be the best method to gain access to the outgoing call functions of the phone? And, I mean DIRECTLY. Would one need to 'unlock' the phone to allow a software interface to do that, or could one write a code using the gobi sdk? I understand that WP8 doesn't allow a dev to write to the contacts info, but there has to be a way to circumvent this. I'm unsure of which rabbit hole I should be going down to find my answers. And, screw the SDK, it does nothing I want it to do (i.e. write to the internal contacts, and yes, I know about the contactstore).
And also, a link to a very informative post on FFU's would be nice
Any help?
