Evening XDA,
I personally use an HTC EVO Shift, but my whole family has recently become an Android family.
My mom has this Photon.
But we have had problems with it since day 1. First, it was having the issue of mute calls (she couldn't hear them, they couldn't here here)
I told her about the fix that was here on XDA but she went back and replaced it instead.
By the time we got the replacement, her call problem was gone.
On this second Photon, there were updates for the PRL, Profile, and Motorale Software. So I updated all of those.
Now the Photon randomly reboots itself, and when it does, it gets stuck on the splash screen, specifically the word "Now" and the only way I can fix it is to do a battery pull.
Anyone else have this problem too and what can I do to fix it? It is her first Android phone and I don't want it to be a bad experience.
Thanks.
Yes a few people have experience the reboot problem after updating; mine rebooted about 4 times then never did it again. I don't know of a fix but if a battery pull doesn't correct it then i would exchange it. The issue could possibly be hardware related ...
If the phone isnt going past the "now screen" then something went terribly wrong with the updating process and id suggest dropping by sprint.
As for the mute issue my phone muted because i had an airave; sometimes i unplug it when it really bothers me.
The random reboots was an issue the OTA should have fixed. If it didn't, take it back to sprint, and let them know. They will either have a tech look at it or give you a new phone.

Weird. The problem she had at first was the mute calls. The OTA fixed that but then caused these reboots/freezes.
She bought it at Sam's Club. So she'll have to go there or Sprint, or both?
Thanks for the advice guys.

If shes under 30 days id just get a new one from sams club they shouldn't give her an issue.

Oh I know. This is her second Photon already. Replacing it again will make it her third.
Kinda sucks that she can't fully rely on it. :/

Sometimes it just happens, i went through 4 evo 3D's before i decided to get the photon.
Ok, so I just took her phone and gave a prompt to Restart Now or Restart Later.
I restarted now, it had the open box with the Android next to it, and a yellow progress bar, it rebooted, and actually started up properly telling me it successfully updated the software.
Maybe it was failing to reboot for the update?
Hopefully this fixes the problem.
I updated the firmware this morning and it looked like it had worked but then there was an explanation point in the notification bar saying there was an update available. I clicked the icon and everything froze. I tried to power off but it froze at the confirmation screen. I held the power button down with the volume down button to reset and it just took me to a page with gears and an orange explanation point. i did the data wipe with the same result. I did the reset button with a paperclip and same result. I downloaded the update onto a micro SD card and did the data wipe and was told by ASUS it would install the update from the SD but still nothing. I cant figure anything out, if anyone has suggestions or any similar problems let me know.

the OTA updates launched me into a perpetual reboot loop. i tried letting the battery drain all the way down but it didn't stop it once I powered back up the next day.
ASUS phone tech's want me to send it in for service, but before I send it I am hoping that someone has another solution I can try.
Hi guys.
My phone shuts down at random moments. I can boot it up again by holding the power button for about 10 seconds. Sometimes, not always, the phone feels hot and batterylife dropped. I have been struggling with this problem ever since i got this phone. I hoped to solve it with installing a new kernel and rom. I am now on Slimbean 3.1.0. The phone was initially on XLQ6 4.0.4. This didn't change anything, unfortunately.
I have also tried:
- removing external SD
- placing a new battery (which has no room to move, in case anyone suggests the battery might be moving)
- wiping caches
The strange thing is that my friend has bought his i9100 together with mine in the same order. He is also on XLQ6 and is experiencing the same issues. Less often than me, however.
My smalband is still on XLQ6. Is it possible that this causes my problems? Or is it more likely that my friend and me simply bought phones from a bad batch or something (hardware related)? I really don't want to send back my phone. That is my absolute last resort.
EDIT: Problem solved! Installing the application "Load Monitor" and enabling the "wake lock" function has done the trick. No more shutdowns or reboots!
Anyone?
2 devices with the same issue?
I'd be at the store where I bought it right now.
I will do that when I am absolutely sure that it is hardware related. However, if anyone has a potential solution I would really like to solve this issue myself.

Same with me. change from 4.0.4 WLPT to 4.0.4 WLPY but problem still presists.
Does anyone know if changing smalband (if that is possible?) could make a difference? Because that is the only similarity to the original state of my phone. A lot of AT&T users in the USA experienced the same problems also with 4.0.4. However, nobody can come up with a solution.

If it is heating near the camera, it's facing death soon.
If it is new and warranty isn't voided, why not flashing the carrier ROM and get a new one?

Because I don't like to lose my phone for a couple of weeks. And I prefer to fix these things myself. I have seen so many topics about this on XDA and Google. There must be a solution to it.
Is it possible that these problems are caused by my modem? That is the only unchanged thing since I have had this phone.
I might have found a possible solution. I've read something on a Dutch forum about sim-cards causing these issues. So I have placed a new sim-card and the problem hasn't appeared in the last 3 days. Before that, the problem was occuring about 3-6 times in one day. It's too early to say this has solved my problem, but it definitely made a difference so far. If it keeps functioning perfectly for the next couple of days I will close this topic.
Symptoms were merely reduced. Phone still shuts down approximately each 2 days. Much better than it was before though. Why would a sim-card change reduce, but not solve the problem? This is starting to hurt my brain.

You may experience sleep of death. What WiFi chipset do you have? I had the same issue on a Murata Wi-Fi chipset.
Yup, Murata chipset. I've googled some more on SoD. I have now installed an app called "Load Monitor" and enabled Wake Lock in preferences. This should prevent the phone from going into deep sleep, apparantly.
Some portugal carrier had a problem with lte sim card or something like that.
I really don't see how a sim card can actually mess with a phone.
Maybe the enabling of some features screws it up.

In my case Samsung Service Team replaced the motherboard. My new MB has a Samsung Electronics wifi chipset. Two weeks now and no SoD.
That sounds good. However, ever since I have installed Load Monitor my phone runs fine. It drains approximately 40% of my entire battery, but it lasts easily until the end of the day.
But again, I shouldn't get too excited. Sim-card change seemed to work in the first few days as well.
Will be continued...
It has been over a week since I have installed Load Monitor. My phone hasn't shut down once. Problem appears to be solved! I hope more people will read this topic, because I have seen a lot of desperate people during my search to a solution.
The only disadvantage is the battery usage of the application. I now have approximately 40-50% at the end of the day instead of 60-70%.

So this is probably the 3rd thread I've made for this device.
After returning my first Z2, I got this one a few (maybe 4 to 5) days ago and now I'm having issues with it. First time, the screen froze at my lock screen pattern entry; no response whatsoever but the LED light was blinking as I had a notification. I had to hold volume up + power button to soft reset. In the same day (today) I've just had to reset it again for the second time but this time, the power button would not wake the screen! No matter what I clicked, it would not work so I had to press volume up + power again till it vibrated 3 times and reset. I'll be going back to return the phone tomorrow and getting my third Z2! Anyone else having issues or anyone have any ideas as to why it's/what is happening?
Thanks in advance for any responses
EDIT: Are there any built in logs I can have a look at or anything of that sort to determine what went wrong?

Is your phone bone stock at the moment? (locked BL, no root, stock rom, stock kernel)
I had the issue initially - the phone wouldn't wake up a couple of times a day and I'd have to soft reset. But I was rooted with a custom kernel, etc. and learning to use the tools for Sony phones (coming from Samsung phones). But now it's perfectly stable. In my case, I suspect it was a combination of how I was flashing things, etc.
Otherwise, completely stock, i don't recall the phone freezing. Have you done a complete wipe and repair via SUS or PC Companion?

Hey, yeah the phone is pure stock. I've not messed around with the software nor downloaded anything I shouldn't have. I've not done a complete wipe and repair but I'm thinking about factory resetting. Obviously this is not a hardware issue but I don't want to have to keep resetting my phone twice a day because that is stupid. Hopefully it was a one off and I guess I'm not too bothered but I may go in store tomorrow and just see if they will replace it. Silly reason to do so, I know, but I guess I'm within my rights if the phone isn't working properly. What do you think?

Ah man. In a way I'm glad to see I'm not alone at least! For some reason mine is mostly random but I've kind of noticed it happens after I pull the charger out. Have you tried to go in and exchange it? If it's the camera causing it, it seems easily reproducible.
@shaf46
Hey Shaf, sorry to bother you mate. I just don't understand what is wrong with this phone! My estimated time on with stamina mode is down to 1 day a few hours again. It is a brand new phone I only got it yesterday. Is it the way I am charging it or is it just buggy software? I don't have any apps I don't need and even tap to wake is off. The battery works normally I guess although it is draining a bit fast (5% in 20 minutes while using it) but I don't understand what could be causing this to happen!

It's happened to me once where the phone wouldn't switch on after sleeping, turned on after about 2mins, but only when I received my magnetic charger and started charging with it. Not sure if the magnetic charger is the problem since I only had that problem once and never happened since.
Are you charging it with a magnetic charger?

Did you manage to sort it out? No I'm using the standard charger provided but after charging it last night, the estimation of battery time in stamina mode has come down significantly. The estimation assumes stamina mode is not on but it is turned on in my notification bar. This time yesterday the estimate was at ~5 days.
The Zenfone 9 is a great little device. However, since today I have seen several automatic reboots of the device. Anyone else seeing this problem?

Yes I am. No worries. Device is great. Just software.
Did a hard reset - problem persists. Not sure what the cause is - working with Asus support on it.
Hi, a friend of mine with a ZF9 has got reboot every night during charge (he uses slow charge, this night he'll try normal charge).
He had reboot even during daytime, he did a hard reset yesterday and for now everything is ok, but I'll update with new info in case of.
I've been having those reboots for weeks now. There is an official thread on the asus forums talking about it. There are more than a dozen people who have also reported it and from the looks of it, Asus hasn't found the source of the problem yet. Out of curiosity, in which country did you buy it? Are you rooted?
my version is a french version. I neither had any beta OS on it nor was it rooted. I wanted to provide Asus with Logs but they rather wanted the device for repair, now I'm waiting for its return.
I doubt this is a hardware issue though as the reboots did happen in cold state w/o any system activities ongoing. The only special thing on my setup was that I used two sim cards in parallel.
I did a hard reset and he problem remained. I also used slow charging.
I'm from Italy and the phone of my friend is not rooted and with bootlloader locked.
I heard my friend minutes ago, and from when he deactivated programmed charging the issue seems to have disappeared. Have you got programmed charging on?
Yes, I have the upload scheduled. But I'm beginning to suspect that the problem originates from a lot in Italy. I just asked you because I thought it was from there.
Love this phone but also having the same issue. Bought from Asus directly (US site) too. There's a whole thread of folks with the problem too on their forum:
ZenFone 9 randomly restarts

Try to deactivate it and report please ;-)
My friend hasn't got reboot since then for now, two days and a half ago.
My reboots do not happen while charging, FWIW. And they're always while the phone is idle (sitting on desk). I look up and see it's spontaneously rebooting...
I was having reboots on custom kernel, just updated to 32.2050.2050.34 without going custom kernel (still rooted) and have had no reboots yet.
Mine reboots while watching YouTube app, either with high brightness, while charging, or both. It seems to be less likely to happen if i clear cache from YouTube settings.
It typically doesn't happen in other apps. Phone is stock. EU version.
After testing for a few weeks, there is a good chance that the reboots on my device are due to Magisk (not modules)
