Hello,
So i got myself an Edge with 3GB of RAM, since i have been using another SO for a while now i'm not updated on android systems anymore so please help me out if you can.
After boot, installing the basics (FB, Flipboard etc. etc.) and setting up everything i only have about 700MB available, so where is the rest??
Before you all start saying that i installed too much trash, have too much bloatware etc. etc. let me inform you that:
1- I have a J5 (single SIM) with 1.5GB of RAM with the EXACT same setup as this one, the diference is the loss off about 1.5 to 2 GB of RAM since i have the same amount of RAM available on my J5.
2- I disabled the apps i don't use so they are "offline" and shouldn't interfere with the count.
So same setup with a weaker phone....... and almost the same RAM available....
The only diference between my edge and the J5 is that i have a smartwatch paired to it, but after the test with the J5 (yes it will accept my smartwatch) there is no diference in RAM on my J5......
Please help me to understand this before i take it back to the shop.......

You do know how android works right? I have a edge+ with 4gb of ram and at this moment I have 711mb free and guess what it's smooth and fast because having a lot of ram without the system use its not how android works

So what you are telling me is that besides the almost 400MB reserved, the same apps, same version of OS and the same usage i will have always this amount of RAM occupied??
Ok, now i will bring this back to the store and get myself a cheap 2GB RAM phone...... No point of having a device that is always cramped up without the possibility of expanding. I do a lot of multitasking (as soon as the holidays are over) and i thought that this would be a device that can "handle" it. I have seen the batt. problems and tried to read about the RAM management that should be solved with the marshmellow update ..... I think that this device is going to be a problem for me to use.......
I had a Galaxy note (1) before and the only reason i sold it was because of the "always ocupied RAM" and it was a PIA with multitasking. Have used a diferent OS ever since but loved the edge so decided to give it another shot, wrong idea.
For me if a device lasts all day (18H) and can handle multitasking i'm happy......

Hi, I heard MIUI reserves 1GB+ for itself. Can any of non-Pro version owners report 2GB RAM sufficiency for common operation (multitasking, running user apps in background etc.). How much complexity the present memory allows? Is killing apps in background frequent? How about lagging?
Is there any real performance comparison between Pro and non-Pro configuration?
And finally is it worth to drop ~$30 more for Pro version (as about phone smooth performance and fingerprint scanner)
Haven't got the phone, but from research i'm doing, it seem like a big annoying issue.
Hi, I have the 2GB version, but I also have a similar phone with stock Android, so I'm going to compare these two.
Multitasking in MIUI is very tight, don't expect to keep switching to more than 2 apps instantly, there will be lags and loading animation. Yes killing in background is frequent, there is a page on Security app called Autostart that is listing apps that are actually running, and I have never seen more than 4-5 apps tagged as running, assuming you keep autostart off. However, if you tag an app as autostart enabled, even if they're killed they will start again in background, so you won't have problems with notification, at the expense of a little battery life. This is kinda complicated but offers for more control. Notice that app that isn't tagged as running and not autostart enabled is dead dead, no notification, no background process, no battery drain.
I don't think there'll be much different for Pro version in multitasking, I have seen the same thing on Mi 5, it's just the way MIUI works. But yes the $30 is definitely worth it for double the storage, 150% RAM, and fingerprint.
Note that you can disable the background killing in developer options, disable MIUI battery optimization, and tag all apps as autostart enabled, to get better multitasking experience as good as stock Android, but apparently this is not a good idea if the phone is only having 2GB of RAM, the lag is becoming too much in my opinion, because MIUI does keeping around 1GB for itself in this phone. Hope that helps.
I'll keep this short and sweet. Am on latest xiaomi.eu's 6.5.26 dev build for my ido and dare I say it's the best representation of how it should be done for MIUI global rels. Most crufts removed and loose ends tightened. That being said and not that I blame xiaomi.eu's team in any shape or form, they have to work with what they got so suffice to say that MIUI by default could seriously use way better RAM management chops.
If it's just $30 more for Pro and you don't care about a larger screen estate (kenzo), then go for it bro double time.
You're busy and don't have time to wait, which is why you need to stop reading this thread and get back to organizing your Pogs. Rate this thread to express how the Xiaomi Mi A1 performs when multitasking. A higher rating indicates that the Xiaomi Mi A1 keeps many apps in memory so that they don't need to reload, and that when moving between apps, transitions are smooth and performance is excellent.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
When I run Google play store in background, other apps in foreground starts not responding.
3.5 gigs of RAM are excellent (~0.5 gigs are left for the GPU). What I don't understand is that why this device employs a 512MB swap partition which causes wear and tear of its internal storage. I'm sure as hell this swap partition cannot be disabled without rooting which I'd love to avoid.
Actually it is very smooth in terms of multi-tasking
is it just me or anyone else experienced the same thing? my recent apps keep restarting even when i got about just 4 or 5 apps opened. i checked the ram usage but it seems normal, it uses about 60-70% of ram. does anyone know whats going on here?
What i have observed is, android OS and system, and few other Google apps take up 1.5+ Gigs of RAM. I am not quite satisfied with that...
However the performance and multitasking is very good though.

That means that 2,5 gb of ram is unused and wasted.

Restart your phone. Happens to me a lot on stock.
ability to use split screen for 2 apps is really nice.
Pretty much mid-range performance, as per expectation
My MiA1 since September 2017, Stock/OTA Android 8.1.0, November 2018, no further updates (Rejected all Android 9/P updates so far, latest November 2019).
Not Rooted.
Usage (Average) Statistics:
RAM: 4 GB, ~39% Free.
Int Storage: 64 GB, 55% Available.
Ext Storage: 32 GB, 13% Available.
Total number of Apps installed: 293 (true!)
Self-installed Apps: 275 (!!!)
System Apps: 18
Maintenance Apps: Greenify, AccuBattery, AntiVirus, Button Mapper, Android Assistance, ...
No crunchy Video Games, Flight Simulators etc.
Performance: Average without lags, Multitasking, split screen or with flipscreen.
Crashed twice in two years.
Currently Android is up for last 21 days no drags.
(I, usually, Shutdown in 10 days, as cleanup)
Phone goes in deep sleep (>80% of time) when inactive and screen off.
LiPo battery BN31 with ~2800mAh (90% of original) after 2+1/4 yrs
I charge 10-80% at 1.95A or 0.67C
30-40hrs use between charging.
Screen on Time 4-5hrs (~12% of use).
My Multitasking rating 3.5 / 5.
Pretty disappointing
Memory management is horrible in this phone..I have to restart the phone every 2 days.. otherwise the OS will keep killing background apps..even if u left any application to check a message or something, Android will instantly kill that app and you'll have to wait for it to reload again.. anything u were doing in that app is just gone ..I rooted my phone using magisk and uninstalled many bloatware like ant Hal services etc,..I use SD maid pro to clear caches, force closed every other app, tried to tweak the settings of the low memory killer, increased the size of the swap file even overclocked the phone to stay running at the max CPU ratio but nothing worked ..apps keeps getting closed the exact second u leave them despite having more than 2 gigs of free RAM
A1 just works fine for me
Hi,
I used to love my Kenzo 2 gb version, untill I found out that his 1,8 gb of ram are so so low. But, is that true?!
I mean 2 gb are the minimun requirement for MM or NG I think, but with miui, miui port, NG based rom (didn't try oreo, or lineage MM), custom kernel, anything the ram management is really really bad.
After only two days of usage, free ram became 200mb or even 100mb with no social media app (just telegram and instagram with no notification allowed) or anything. Doze, greenify, clear ram or not clear it, doesn't change the situation, used ram increase day by day untill the phone is laggy and unusable.
So you have to restart the phone at least every two day. It's crazy today.
On custom ng roms the situation is a bit better but on miui, damn, the ram is so full that sometimes I can't even open the keyboard or camera.
Every 2 gb phones has this issue? is an MM/NG problem? or is a kenzo problem? is there something I (or we) can do to menage ram more efficently (I don't want free ram, I want a ram used in the correct way).?
thank u
Very good question, i suggest you make manual tweaks to lmk (low memory killer), it has helped my rn3 2gb multitask better on oreo

I have too faced that problem. It's mainly due to ROMs. Some ROMs have lag no matter which kernel you use or how much tweak it. I have literally tried each and every custom rom which are updated and found only some ROMs which have less noticable lag. Default miui rom, aex, RR by movzx, nos some builds and Oreo, and slim rom. On other rom I tried different kernel and when tweaked it to max but still lagged as hell. Even opening dialer app sometimes froze the system leave aside heavy gaming. This is really serious issue on 2gb because of which we are restricted to certain ROMs.
I too have a 2GB kenzo, but never had such problems...currently using NOS Oreo and it is fluid & fast. Same on miui.
Right now system occupies around 700MB + around 400MB apps, rest is available. Never had RAM problems myself...luckily.
Buy MI device unlock bootloader next day > Flash custom ROMs > RIP ****UI
That is the main reason why I've changed my Kenzo 2gb. I wasn't able to use miui at all with this phone, app killing and lagging was a daily basis. So I used the most Ram friendly rom with this phone, but still keeping more than 3 apps in the memory was a problem.
Idk, but maybe it's because of the x64 architecture (similar to pc, this architecture uses more ram). I had many phones with 32gb and x32 architecture and ram was never an issue.
So trust me, I've tried everything to improve the ram efficiency, but not much has changed. The only solution for me to change the phone.

I don't know how to turn the lmk aggressive on radon I know that I have to edit the radon.sh script but I don't know what I have to write there.
Oreo I think is pretty unstable for me know better wait some months

I read that that app bricked some devices. Does it really help? It just create a swap partition I believe

Oreo is unstable, but i can't go back
I use agni, so its easy af to change lmk settings
Anyway, you should set it to light, not aggressive bro

Ram to sd for konzo
Does ram to sd like some app works really i havent rooted my phone still on stock miui reply soon... I also face ram management problem on my kenzo 2gb
i have around 400-500 mb of free ram, i'm using greenify often and set background process limit to 4.
i uninstalled every apps that not really used and yeah less lag noticed
Is it still possible to increase the RAM size of the Poco F1? I have the 6gb/128gb variant and I want to have maybe 2 to 4gb more RAM. I read around that it can be done with a swap file on older phones but I already tried that and even added up to 6gb but it doesn't seem to get used. Is there a custom ROM or magisk zip that can be used for that? My phone currently runs on Corvus with NGK.
The reason why I want more RAM? Egg NS. My phone frequently runs out of RAM and the game force closes.
Thanks!

What are these apps and games you use?
How do you fill the entire memory?
I switched to LineageOS + NGK because it's more stable. So far I only have DamonPS2 and Egg NS installed after flashing the ROM. Had no problems with DamonsPS2 even with stock ROM. Anyway, I said before the app in question is Egg NS, a switch emulator. The app needs 8gb RAM so the Poco F1 is short of 2gb that's why it force closes randomly. I get smoother framerates compared to stock but then I still run out of RAM.
Well, short of swapping the DRAM modules for bigger ones it would be impossible, and even then who knows if it would work?
Although now that you've posted this question, I'm left wondering if anyone has successfully done this… I know that Scotty from Strange Parts (and others) have swapped NANDs for bigger storage, but RAM I've never seen.
I think ram is included in the SOC, which means cpu, gpu, controllers, everything else will be also replaced if someone were to upgrade ram, basically changing the core of the phone.
I'm trying to make it work like this one. A really old post from 2012 so I doubt it'll still work for Android 10.

In that case why don't you try zRAM instead? Depending on the kernel your zRAM (or swap, for that matter) capabilities may differ, but give it a go!
IDK about other kernel utility apps, but EX Manager has the options.
Ok I'll give that one a try. Just tried Roehsoft RAM expander and it still works but the game runs really slow when it's already using the swap memory. At least it doesn't force close now. lol
