I can get into the boot options screen by doing the On/Volume Down press but the menu's are all in Chinese and just seem to go through self diagnostics and tests. I can drag n drop file from Mac OSx but none of the apps I have found so far will communicate with the phone via USB. I am trying to get root so i can do a full back-up and then to try and put HTC Android 4.3 on it.
Do you guys have any idea on how I can achieve this or to get the phone to display it's boot options in English ?
I am pretty much clueless and stuck, any advice, tips, hacks etc would be really appreciated
I did follow a link at one stage on the web that went to SRSroot but their tool was windows only
Hmmm More messing with the phone has revealed power on with volume up depressed gets me to some very small text menu with the options;
Boot Normal
Fastboot
Boot(UART)
Boot UART is all the test screens that I was getting in Chinese but now they are touch screen buttons and labeled in english ao that's good to know.
Using fastboot-mac from HTCRootOne tries to talk to it but comes back with error: could not clear input pipe; result -536854449, is this something that's platform specific, ie it's not a true HTC so the version of fastboot-mac is no good and needing a non specific version ?
Ok that error is generated to the oem get_identifier_token...
If i do a fastboot-mac devices i get the reply "mt6589_phone_720pv2 fastboot" ...

Done some more digging with the phone attached to the Mac here and checking my systems profile I see that the phone is listed under usb connections as seen in the screen grab, still referring the as a HTC. Getting a new usb cable delivered to see if the phones usb cable provided is for charging only. If anyone here has any other suggestions I would be all ears or eyes as the case might be
Done more grubbing around and have found it to be a HDC One, HTC One clone .... Now to go see if any are rooted on here

Well i am pretty much stuck here so if anyone is reading this and wants to offer some help and advice I could do with it
I have looked around on the phone and can't see any bin or system folders even with show hidden i can't find them.
adb wont give me a remote shell, it complains that there is no bin/bash
when i try and do an adb backup i get 0 byte files grrrrr!!
I still need to find a way of getting root

Install some file explorer that allows you to browse from the top folder (/). I'm pretty sure you'll find at least /system there.

Thanks Gbl08ma - I have have it opened in Mac osx finder with show all files hidden or otherwise - The phone shows as two "No Name" devices and get mounted immediately on connection ....
I used sideload to push a package file over using adb and then went back to use Finder, and I can't see the file anywhere - hidden partition perhaps ? Can you do that with Android ?
Even the Android SDK file transfer app wont see the phone when it's connected, I am all very confused - lol

/ does not get mounted over USB so you won't see /bin, /system, /data or anything other than the SD card and the internal FAT32 "user" partition when entering USB transfer mode.
You must do it on the device. And for adb to work, USB debugging must be enabled in the settings.

I already had the phone in usb debug mode. Had to set the phone to use usb as MTP and not mass storage device connection type. Now it allows me to get in to the blighter with adb, fastboot still errors with pipes. That method allows me to get adb shell running and i can get android file transfer .... back to the reading part again

Hmm yummy - lots of interesting things in there .... Forgive my ignorance again please, but if i can create an update.zip file from the shell on the device that compresses all files from \ and all subdirs would that be the same thing as a safe ROM backup ? i wanna be safe before i attempt to root the phone as someone on here has a lower spec version of this phone and says it's a partial brick now.

but i was only able to root using frama root app, and it worked like a charm, but thats the only thing i could achieve, dont know but it seems theres no official thread of developement going on for any cloned device, mine runs the MOLY.WR8.W1248.MD.WG.MP.V6.P8 2013/08/12 15:55 Baseband.
After root i just installed some root apps, ads blockers, cant get any recovery to work, (Playing safe actually not to brick this now, since no support yet) but would have appreciated trying out kitkat on it, using antutu to view up specs, its impressive, i got to find out our 13MP camera at the back can do a great job than it currently is we only need to figure out how to change the image compression, the one i stumbled upon online was the blast, the 13MP was great also the flash light was tweaked to be 50X its current brightness, our 1GB application space was increased to 3.5GB, GPS and the rest was also modded to work really great.
Would like to hear any new updates you stumble upon bro.

I downloaded the DirecTV Now app on New Year's Eve hoping for $35/cable. Instead, I was greeted with the same Error 40 that everyone with a rooted device got. It took me a couple of days of researching and playing and reflashing and..., but I've finally figured out the simple(r) method to bypass this stupid root check for DirectTV Now (AKA Error 40, QP1005)
This applies to the TX5Pro, but it should work on any s905x based AMLogic SoC running Marshmallow 6.0 (A95X, CQ9, TX5, TX3, X96, NEXBOX, +many more.) As I understand it, they all have similar Android builds using the p212 board and firmware. I also have a M8S s812 running Kit-Kat 4.4.2 that I'll work on breaking, next.
First things, first: If possible, find your firmware and do a clean flash. Not a requirement, but if you've been playing with this for a while and you've ended up here, you've probably mucked up your /system files in some way or another. I managed to screw up my su binary location a few times and couldn't get it back without a lot of work. Reflashing was a three-minute, headache-free task.
That said, you'll want to adb over tcp/ip as these devices don't like to play the USB cable game.

Here's the trick with this... DirecTV Now's shared object file in lib/armeabi/libdrmagent_downloadable_jni.so looks for a few keywords within a few properties. Those properties are:

...and the keywords are:

"release-keys, OnePlus2, OnePlus, Z26CL, STUDIO_C, user" are keywords that it favors, while "cm, cyanogen, cyanogenmod, debug, userdebug, A0001" are disqualifying keywords. Supposedly, "test-keys" is a bad word, too.
In my case, I needed to edit my build.prop to eliminate any sign of the bad words. Example:

Run through the file and replace anything that says userdebug with user and test-keys with release-keys until you get to "#end build properties" Then save and reboot.
After reboot, install Hide My Root (I used the one from Amphoras) and hide the Su binary. This is where things might be getting tricky for some of you... on the TX5Pro, the SuperUser app is a system installed app, meaning it can't be uninstalled (it can, but it's not exactly a simple task for everyone) so you'll need to go into settings -> apps -> superuser and disable the app from there. Reboot again. Now, with the su binary hidden and the app's manifest not showing up in the system, the error 40 message should go away. This option will allow you to quickly restore su and SuperUser without needing a bunch of additional steps. You'll still need to set the device location service to "battery saving" (or use mock locations) but that's a simple task anyone can figure out.
The app is a choppy on high def feeds for some reason. I can't tell if this is processing/memory issue or a feed (wifi) issue. By default, the app doesn't work on ethernet, meaning you'll have to use wifi until you can fix that issue. But hey, one thing at a time, right? Anyway, I hope this helps anyone with this particular headache.

Got DirecTV NOW working on my nexus 6 running pure nexus ROM... I just did the edits with super su root and root explorer. Then disabled super su and rebooted.
Now to update the the build.prop files on the lineage os 13.0 nexus 10, and my wife's kltevzw (on ting gsm network) running lineage os 14.1

Any chance that you tried this out with Data Free TV/"Sponsored Data" with an AT&T wireless account? i.e. running the box through a Cellular Hotspot or tethered to your phone. I've been looking at if one could use one of therse Android TV Boxes to basically get Data Free TV.

I started my search for a new rugged rootable phone recently and I settled on Poptel P60. It is a great phone though slightly bigger than what I normally get. Nontheless, the specs are excellent and the price is fair!
I've had a limited success rooting and customizing this phone. The OEM interface is almost bearable but overall the "Customized UI" felt like a downgrade from stock Oreo. It has a very annoying feature of reverting to stock launcher on startup, even when I selected Nova as my default one. The stock launcher is not that great. This, and the lack of ability to use x.flux, Titanium Backup and other root-only apps drove me to try hacking things again.
After emailing the manufacturer they provided the firmware but it is in CPB format. I tried at least 3 different converters for CPB to MTK Scatter and they all either freeze or hang. No luck.
Instead I did a rom readback with SPFlashTool and then cut up the partitions with Wwr. Now I've finally had the recovery partition! I used CarlivImageKitchen to port TWRP from a similar device, Ulefone Armor 5. The chipset and resolution are same. After some trial and error it worked! I had to use USB-OTG for input and external sd card had a weird label, but I was able to install Magisk from the SD card to root, followed by XPosed, full package. It worked! If anyone needs my ported TWRP Recovery for Poptel P60 just ask!
However, the manufacturer UI did complain a lot about the phone being rooted. Eventually, somehow, Magisk stop receiving root requests. They never showed up and timed out! Very strange, because apps that already received root continued working. I tried a lot but could not fix the issue. I was fed up. I wanted to do a manufacturer reset (in hopes of starting from scratch and then attempting to port Lineage or something) but, as I've mentioned, I have not received a firmware compatible with SPFlashTool. I tried to make one from Armor 5. The partitions were almost the same (both are MT6763 devices). One was out of order, and offsets were different and I patched all those. To be clear, I used all the partitions and layout extracted from my rom readback that was cut up by Wwr. I only used the Armor 5 scatter as a reference for file format. I edited the layout to match everythign I saw in Wwr.
This is where the horror begins. I tried flashing (Download Only) with SPFlashTool but got some error saying something changed. "Do you want to do Format & Download instead?". Being an inexperienced idiot that I am, I said yes!
Now, the phone appears bricked. No lights. No screen output. Cannot enter fastboot. Cannot enter recovery. Cannot boot.
I have a feeling the preloader got corrupted. I'm not sure this is the case because I've omitted the preloder from download. At least the first time the phone started acting bricked. The device still shows as Mediatek USB VCOM device and flashing gets initiated but all attempts to flash result in errors. MA checksum mistmatch or something along that order. I've tried a lot of things and I'm stuck! For good or for worse I've tried flashing Ulefone Armor 5 preloader but I'm getting the same error when trying to flash it.
Here is what I have...
- Stock firmware in SPB format. I can't use it and nothing I tried worked for converting it.
- ROM dump made with SPFlashTool
- Wwr was able to extract every partition except preloader. This includes nvram, etc. I'm not sure why it was not able to extract the bootloader.
- TWRP port that worked. Seems not useful if the phone does not start.
- Preloader for Ulefone Armor 5, (same chipset and resolution)
Clearly I am an idiot for using "Format & Download" option. I've found posts later suggesting against it. I am also over my head for trying to tackle a new device by myself, though I have had a marginal success with porting TWRP and installing Magisk.
Now, I feel like idiot and I am stuck! I beg you, XDA developers, if you have any advice (besides not being an idiot in the future), please share!
Try bringing it back to the carrier and just say that you don't know why it is broken. Maybe they could help you out.
Say maybe something like you wanted to do a factory reset and now everything is broken.

That wouldn't work, heh. I bought this phone on eBay and rights now it's currently sold by a handful of sites. It is on warranty but returning it back to China would be complicated. At any rate, I live on the edge outside of warranty!
I was just about ready to give up and feel like the biggest reckless loser on Earth... Days of tinkering around with nothing but a phone brick to show for it. Poptel tech support wouldn't provide me with MTK scatter. All they gave me was this SPB firmware that nobody uses and it crashes every converter I threw at it. Useless.... No fastboot. No recovery. No functional bootloader.
The amazing GOOD NEWS is I have debricked the phone... I used a bootloader from another phone's firmware: Cubot_Power_MT6763_180607_8.1.0. Unlike Ulefone Armor 5's preloader this one worked! It seems like it's the only thing I was missing because the phone starts up and everything seems to work. I must have done a good job with all other partitions but I'll try to watch for signs of anything else broken. Right now it seems fine.
I'm not sure if the bootloader was completely gone, corrupted, or an incorrect one was used. All I know is I was able to download Cubot Power's working bootloader (also MT6763) with SPFlashTool. Nothing like a feeling of unbricking your phone!
I will post more updates if that's ok... I'm hoping to port Lineage on it (I've never tried that before) or at least find a way around the manufacturer's clunky UI. The hardware is great otherwise. If anybody wants a working ported TWRP image or the scatter I used for debricking just ask! I will make a post later if I have more success with customizing the phone. The phone is debricked and I have a scatter and images to fall back on if anything goes wrong. Woot! Thank you everyone who developed these great tools.

Hey man! Sorry for a slow reply. Was traveling for a few days.
Here is what I have. I started with a TWRP for Armor 5 (also MT6763) and I ported it for Poptel P60 using one of the guides on the forums. It works but it's not perfect. The touchscreen doesn't work, so you have to use USB OTG. Also, internal and external SD card mounts work but labels are confusing, so please be extra careful if wiping/formatting those. I advise popping the SD card out of the phone if wiping/formatting, just in case.
My experience with the phone is it is not the most friendly for rooting. Poptel's customizations are pesky and get in the way. The launcher keeps resetting to default on startup, even after you specify a different one. If you uninstall/disable the OEM launcher there will be red a label on top right of the screen, saying "Customization" that I have not found a way to get rid of. There are other things too, like I keep losing ability to add superuser permission to new apps... Can't figure out why, but sometimes reinstalling Magisk helps. Be very careful when using Magisk Hide, this can turn off your ability to use SIM cards, at least temporarily until you disable hide and restart. Other things is superuser apps don't always launch on startup. Anyway, I don't want to discourage you too much... Here is my twrp port.

sorry man, didn't end up using yours theres a twrp on 4pda now with a mod to flash to keep root. I'll upload for you here if you don;t have an account there.

I decided not to bother with the draining and distribution of modified firmware as a whole, easier to apply the patch, and ... you're done!

Setting:
1. Throws on micro SD-card this patch.
2. Downloading the last zip-installer " Magisk-v ..... the zip " and also copy it to the SD-card, turn off the phone.
3. Through the SP Flash Tool sewn recovery "TWRP" (the system can not be loaded !!!).
4. Vaypaem userdata (reset to factory settings) through better "factory mode" (volume down inc +) / select "Clear eMMC".
After reset immediately loads in the TWRP (inc + volume up), and from the sd-card in turn apply patches "LiteMod_Poptel_P60_v.12.zip" and "Magisk-v ..... zip". Reboot from the installation refuse twrp-applications.
Done, you have custom firmware!

What does not work:
1) Do not see "the internal memory" (can not decipher the "data" section and ask when starting TWRP password).
Solution:
download the patch: Attached filedisable_encryption_P60.zip (133.89 KB)
throw it on the memory card, boot into TWRP, go to the "mount" to put a checkbox on the vendor , then go to the "install" and install the patch.
After installation make data in the "cleaning" cleaning (possibly cleaning does not help but the formatting of data should definitely help)
after data manipulation TWRP be able to work with the data section
2) is not working USB / MTP mode into TWRP

Information for those who are "in the tank" :
When TWRP presence in the smartphone in any case and under no circumstances should you do reset through the system.
Resetting takes place only directly through TWRP (standard cleaning sections)
If you run the command via the android in the first place, it can not be executed because it does not understand the TWRP.
and secondly, you get a constant load in TWRP because it has not yet executed the command android you will always be send to recovery /
Solution for "tank": need to install flow-recovery to be completed through a reset command or cancel it.
Another solution I personally do not know

Recently my trusty old box stopped finding streams in kodi. I suspect it's related to the expired DST Root CA X3 cert that no longer is usable since last week. Since this OTT box hasn't been updated in over 5 years I'm left with few options short of tossing it and starting over, BUT I'de like to try to get android functioning again instead of scrapping the hardware.
Soo...hoping someone could provide some insight how to safely add the new certs to the existing system store -OR- completely replace it. I'm semi-proficient with ADB and the device is rooted AFAIK.
Option #1 : add in the new certs. Per https://letsencrypt.org/docs/dst-root-ca-x3-expiration-september-2021/ and https://letsencrypt.org/docs/certificate-compatibility/ I have installed the IdentiTrustCommercialRootCA onto the device (ISRG Root X1 I believe) but it installed as a personal cert, and I'm preparing to move it to the system store but I think theres an intermediate cert I need to install as well. I just don't know what it is, or where to find it.
Option #2 : add in the entire Mozilla cert package. http://wiki.cacert.org/FAQ/ImportRo...ect=ImportRootCert#Android_Phones_.26_Tablets has a nice walkthru and a cert package, but the docs get confusing when they explain how to import the two certs, and their download package has over 130 certs in it.
Option #3 : rebuild the entire system store from scratch. Googles github site has all the certs shipped with android 7, but I'm guessing I'll have install each one as a personal cert before moving each one to the system directory similarly to option 1.

Anyone tried any of these, or any insight to any of these options ?
UPDATE : Worked option 1 last weekend, installed 5 certs- 2 from lets encrypt, 2 from identrust, and 1 I extracted from my browser. It was stupidly easy and without ADB since the box was rooted when I got it. Seems to have solved alot of issues, but how can I be sure the cert chain is intact and hashed properly ?

I know a few friends with older devices and they could surely use my help as well I myself have an old Amlogic S812 device laying around which I wanted to put to some use. Thanks

My box came rooted, and it was required for the procedure I'm about to list here. I've inserted 5 new certs so far and havent seen any adverse effects, but I can say the SSL errors I was seeing in kodi logs no longer appear. I'm also still on android 5.1 so google isn't updating me. I wouldn't attempt this on a supported OS.
I've installed this one first : IdenTrust Commercial Root CA 1 from here : https://www.identrust.com/support/announcements
...also 3 from here : https://letsencrypt.org/certificates/
specifically ISRG Root X1 , Let’s Encrypt R3 , and the DST Root CA X3 ,
Get your certs in CRT format.
Now comes the FUN part :
Install certs normally (as user cert)- lockscreen method , as program certs.
I saw they were installed by looking at the user certs menu afterwards.
Start terminal program
type SU
mount -o rw,remount /system
The directory /data/misc/user/0/cacerts-added is where your user certs are stored. WRITE DOWN the filenames, you'll need them later. The names are now hashes of the actual certs
mv /data/misc/user/0/cacerts-added/FILENAME.0 /system/etc/security/cacerts/
This is where you actually move the certs into the OS folders. Use the 'hash names' you wrote down earlier, entered at the FILENAME.0 spot in the line above, for EACH file.
chmod 644 /system/etc/security/cacerts/FILENAME.0
As above, you'll need to chmod all the new certs.
You'll also need the chown root : root each new file as well.
mount -o ro,remount /system
Reboot
After reboot all your new certs should be system certs.
Hi folks, I am a computer programmer, but NOT for Android. So although I've used adb on my Linux box before to install different Android images onto my phone, I have only a shallow understanding of how Android actually works. I'm hoping you can give me advice...
Short version of the question:
By default, the Minecraft android app stores its user game data ("worlds") in Android "App-specific storage". How can I backup that user data, and move it to a new device? The best online resources I could find recommend copying the data via "adb backup", something like so:

However, when I do that, the output "backup.ab" file is tiny, only 47 bytes long. Clearly it is NOT finding any of the actual data (many MBs) in the com.mojang.minecraftpe App-specific storage. Am I doing something wrong? How else should I try to get a copy of that data?
I've never rooted a phone, and I don't know if rooting would help with this problem or not.
Long version of the question:
My kids are big fans of Minecraft Bedrock Edition (aka Pocket Edition), which they play on their Android devices, currently older Google Pixel 3a phones running stock Android 11. They have created dozens of Minecraft worlds on their phones, using the default settings the app came with.
The Minecraft app, as I recently learned, has TWO choices for where it stores the user's worlds. This this its "File Storage Location" setting, which is global for the whole app. The choices are either "External" or "Application". Now, if you choose External BEFORE creating any worlds, all should be well, your data is stored in a normal folder and to backup, you simply copy the files off the phone the normal way.
But in Minecraft, the default File Storage Location is "Application", which is what Android calls "App-specific storage":

Worse, once you have world data saved in the App-specific storage, the Minecraft app gives you NO WAY to copy it anywhere else! Really, no joke. When you upgrade to a newer phone, and connect your two phones with a USB cable, the normal Android "Copy Apps and Data" process does NOT copy ANY of the Minecraft game worlds the user created! So Mojang/Microsoft, in their wisdom, have made it essentially IMPOSSIBLE for anyone to backup their own game data, or to move it to a newer device, if you used the default File Storage Location = "Application".
I see that Android includes standard APIs for backing up and restoring user data, but apparently Minecraft never uses any of that:

In older versions of the Minecraft app, there was a UI widget to change the storage location of individual worlds, one at time. But at least as of Minecraft version 1.19.71.02, that no longer exists. Mojang silently removed it at some point, probably long ago. Mojang's bug tracker has lots of user-entered bugs about this (often confusingly written), but they seem to have no intention of ever doing anything to fix the problem. E.g.:

There is no 'File storage location' option in my game
Mojang officially supports only ONE way of moving those worlds to a new device. Basically, paying them a monthly subscription to their "Realms" servers, uplading each of your worlds to a Realm server, and then downloading each one to your new device. This may be the way to go but I have not tried it yet:

Managing Data and Game Storage in Minecraft
I've tried using "adb backup -noapk com.mojang.minecraftpe" to copy the data (see above), but it never works for me. I'm doing this on Linux, Ubuntu 22.04.2 LTS (jammy), which reports:
$ adb --version
Android Debug Bridge version 1.0.41
Version 28.0.2-debian
Installed as /usr/lib/android-sdk/platform-tools/adb
I don't know if I'm doing something wrong with adb, something has changed in Android such that this can no longer work correctly, what.
Do you have any advice on what else I should try to copy the data?

Tikolu reports that "adb backup" worked well 5 years ago, but has gotten "very glitchy and unreliable" since then, especially on newer phones.
