Connect XDA2 to net/skype via usb cable & wifi laptop? - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 ROM Development

Tricky, huh?
I have an XDAII & a serial cable to connect it to my wifi equipped laptop. I haven't even figured out how to do the most basic networking - but still I'd like to know if it's possible to:
1. Surf on my XDA via my laptop's net connection, connecting with a cable?
2. Use the XDA as a phone to connect to Skype again using cable & laptop wifi?
I'll settle for "It can't be done" but I'd be interested to hear if it might possibly be done.
Cheers!

1 when connected to activesync the xda have pretty much access to the same things as the pc with activesync have
2 yeah i've heard people say they use skype over lan try doing a search

[Q] Usb tethering

Any body tried the USB tethering of galaxy S2? seems like Samsung did not supply the proper drivers for it to work. I loved that feature in my desire HD as it preserves the battery of the phone( better than WiFi tethering) Any body got any idea on this? thanks....
Works for me
I have an unbranded KE7 SGS2 and USB tethering works fine for me:
Settings -> Wireless and network -> Tethering and portable hotspot -> USB tethering (tick).
My XP-powered laptop then used this connection without any configuration or setup.
Mine's working fine as well.
Running KE7 on the phone, Windows 7 on the computer. Just plugged it in, the drivers installed automatically and it started working with no problems! (I'm actually posting this reply over the tethered connection).
this is really weird. My Gs2 usb tethering is not working in two of my laptops. both are working well with my desire hd. Can this be a hardware issue?
Works fine for me also...

Possibly, I would think a more likely explanation would be a problem with the USB drivers for your GS2.
It's a bit hard to say without looking at your computer. But if there was a problem with the phone, there would most likely be a lot more people reporting it. I'd say the problem is more likely on the computer end.
I might have the wrong end of the stick here, but I would like to use my laptop's broadband connection whilst in the office to use on my phone.
HTC Sense on my previous phone gave you the option when you plugged in the USB lead, does such a thing exist on the Samsung? Or even a 3rd party app that achieves the same goal?
Seems pointless using 3g in the office when I have a fibre connection out to the internet.

I think what you mean is using the pc/laptop internet connection to surf the net on the phone while it is connected via usb to the pc/laptop.
Well the answer to that is sadly this phone does not support that..and like you said..i miss this feature coming from desire hd..

Yes..but still you have to use wifi to connect your phone to the internet.,actually there is a free program for windows 7 that does just that..connectify will make your pc into a hotspot...
Anyway..people who are using htc devices prior to SGS2 will miss this simple yet important feature thanks to samsung

I connected my phone via usb last night in the hope of letting the phone use my PC cable broadband connection. I can never get game hub to load, it always says it needs a working network connection. I thought game hub would use my T-Mobile web n walk connection. After connecting the phone via usb and enabling usb tethering, it successfully found and installed 2 drivers. Then going back to game hub while still connected to usb, it still said it needed a working connection. So what exactly is USB tethering meant to do?

What you sucessfully achived is that your pc now can use your phone mobile internet connection when it is plugged in via usb...that is usb tethering for samsung( that is what i understand). There is no way yet to allow this phone to use your pc's internet connection while the phone is connected via usb unlike on htc's phones.

I see. So in fact, tethering is completely and utterly useless.
hello i shifted to using GS2 from my blackberry (so im a bit of a noob as ive been using blackberry for years)
i have a bit of a confusion here. i have a problem with usb tethering, do you plug in your phone to ur pc/laptop first then only you go to settings> wireless and network> tethering and portable hotspot > tick usb tethering on your GS2 or you tick the usb tethering in settings> wireless and network> tethering and portable hotspot then only you plug in your phone via usb to your laptop/pc.
When i plug in my GS2 to my laptop, i couldnt press anything on my phone,it says 'press home key to quit samsung kies', if i do it then i will lose the usb connection, so i tried going to settings> wireless and network> tethering and portable hotspot > tick usb tethering, and then connect my GS2 to my laptop, but there is no connection between my laptop and my GS2.
i tried going to settings> applications> development > tick usb debugging, unfortunately when after doing that, when i connect my GS2 to laptop, my laptop says no driver for the device, so there is no autoplay or icon of my phone on the 'my computer' folder my lapop. in short i couldnt access my phone through usb.
Im sorry if my words are confusing, its so hard to put it in words.
i really2 need help, as i need to use the internet from my phone as he internet in my college sucks. thank you
What i'm doing is connecting the phone to PC via USB, then the 'usb tethering' checkbox lights up and I can tap on it to activate it. Also have usb debug mode enabled. Try using it with Kies closed/turned off. I'm using Windows 7 if that helps.
i have successfully use usb tethering on win7. i install kies v2.0.1.11053_99. reboot laptop. run kies, go to Tools> Install driver. reboot after finish. connect SGS2 with usb, enable usb tether and i can use internet on my laptop. using sub tether rite now.
fyi, i've tried with samsung usb driver only installation but cannot use usb tether becos i think it did not install phone modem driver.
usb tethering
Is there any application like the one available in HTC devices for usb connection..? I dont like the way the Samsung designed the application on the SGS2 ./. HTC really great..
Install Kies by Samsung
Install Kies by Samsung
the issue with the usb tethering option not being availavle is the network provider blocking this
If you want them to unblock you have to pay them a small fee,,

[Q] Help me find a working reverse Tether app

Hello Everyone! I want to use my Laptop's internet connection via usb cable using my Dell Streak. So I searched for an app that will enable me to do that. While I'm searching and reading all the stuffs that I think that will be the answer to my question, I stumbled upon the word Tether/Tethering.
In which will enable your computer/Laptop to use your Mobile Device's Internet plan or 3g connection. However, what I really wanted was the reverse of this process. I want to use my Laptop's Internet connection. From my laptop connection through USB? or Bluetooth, then to my Dell Streak. So I can surf the Internet using my Mobile device.
I searched the forums already and learned that the latest post for this topic was last 2008. I hope there is already a solution to do this.
Everyone, If you know any apps that I can use please do tell me. Thank you very much!
there aren't any that I know of plus I think it would need to be computer prog not android
There are guides to do it in linux but you need to do it manually I think.

You'll be needing to set up a local network via the wireless connection on your PC.
If you are already on the internet via wifi on the PC, why not use the wifi on the streak?
If you are hooked up via Ethernet/other cable, then broadcasting the connection on the PC's wifi is fairly simple.
Hope this helps.

he wants to do it via usb or bluetooth..
I was able to do this with Linux, but it was a pain and some programs couldn't access the internet. I think only the browser worked.
Would be difficult with usb.It might be easier if you use bluetooth or wifi.
Just go ahead and setup your ad-hoc network or soft-ap on your pc,and make sure you have inter access sharing service or similar software running.
I would recommend you use a wifi soft-ap,it's super easy to setup on winxp/2k/2k3.

[Q] Can you access webtop from a laptop? Also tethering question.

The questions are:
1. Can I access webtop on my laptop if I connect to the phone via usb or bluetooth?
2. Can I tether my computer to the phone via the bluetooth or usb cable?
This might seems redundant but I dont seem to find the answer to this. Can you access webtop via a laptop when you connect the phone with an usb cable? The reason I ask is because sometimes I would like to browse the net while Im at work and that would be the easiest way to actually do using the laptop screen and a external mouse/keyboard. I dont really want to just buy a monitor to take to the office.
Also, is my understanding that the atrix also works like a hotspot that will provide wifi access via the phone data connection. While that is great for most of the times that will not work when I am working with a virtual computer and I dont want to share the main pc connection. With my blackberry I just use the usb connection to tether the virtual pc and that way whatever internet use I do on the virtual computer does not flow via the corporate network.

1.) Maybe the "Motorola Phone Portal" app that came on the phone would work for what you want?.
2.) yes and yes. For wifi or bt use the "Wifi Tether" app, formerly "Wireless Tether". For USB use the "Wired Tether" app. You can find both with a quick google search, not in the market.
It dont seems that the motorola phone portal will do what I want which is using the laptop to browse the phone browser. I hate to tether specially since it seems AT&T is cracking on that but it seems is the only way to use my phone to browse the net on a larger screen. Eihter that or buying another monitor....
If you use the above apps you will not get caught tethering, I speak from experience. It's the custom APNs that are likely to get you in trouble.

[Q] use pc internet (opposite of tethering)

I am not sure what to call this so it is difficult to search for it... what I am wondering is... can I connect my SG2 to PC via usb and use the wired internet connection that way? (For example, at someone's house who doesn't have wireless - so I am not using cell data all the time)
It's generally called reverse tethering. I found a page here on XDA that may help you do what you're wanting to do - [Tool][Windows Only][Root] Android Reverse Tethering
Here's a good example of how to set it up for XP, MAC and Vista. I assume this should apply to Windows 7 as well.

Thanks, guys. I guess I was hoping there was just some setting on the PC and another on the phone and then connect and go. I don't want to install things on on a computer I am just "visiting" for a day or two. I appreciate the quick answers though.
If the PC has a wireless card, you can use that to host an access point for your phone to connect to via wifi.

[Q] How can i surf the web on my PC using the 3g on my phone?

So instead of using proxys, etc at school, I'd much rather just use the 3g off my phone. Because it's quite obvious the software my school uses(Lightpseed Systems), is on the network itself(Nothing physically on the PC)....
Soooo, I know i can WIFI tether, but how can i tether via a USB cable?
What software is required on the PC?
And once i've USB tethered, how do switch to it on the windows machine?
Thanks a ton in advance for any help<3

Try this......
step 1:Settings~> Wireless and Network
settings~> Tethering and portable
hotspot~> then Tick USB Tethering.
Step 2: Settings~> Wireless and Network
settings~> Mobile Networks~> then Tick
Use Packet Data......
LIKE=THANKS
There is no packet data tick...I have network mode, and system select(cdma roaming mode)....
That's a good question. I've always just tethered to my laptop on like a long car ride n used the wifi tether but just kept it tethered to keep it charging. I'm curious as to how you'd enable it over a desktop PC with a LAN connection. Turn off the network adaptor? But I highly doubt a school computer would leave access to that.

I think i'm gonna try clockwork's app for usb tethering...Heard some good stoof about it I'll let ya know how it goes.
I can just see this REALLY handy for anyone who has a institution that blocks websites, or PC's like hotel computers that are stupid.
