help with security Tier level - S740, S743 General

Hi,
I've got an issue trying to use some software on my Rose.
Using GW PDA Connect, its installs and synchronises ok the first time (provided I install the software unlocker available from orange developers). Subsequent attempts to run it asks me to reinstall the software. If I attempt to reinstall the application which resides on the smartphone I get the following error:
cesetup.dll
\\Windows\230\XCPCSyncSvr.exe: Error 2
A bit of googling and it basically boils down to the fact this is a Tier-3 security level problem. In order to change the security level I was going to try a registry hack but can't use any registry editor as its not digitally signed for the device.
Any help much appreciated - thanks in advance.

Hi
I have exactly the same problème between my HTC Touch HD (WM6) and GroupWise PDA Connect.
IBM post a solution, but for Lotus Notes :
http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docvi...475&loc=en_US&cs=UTF-8&lang=en&rss=ct465lotus
I don't how to adapt this to Groupwise.
I still search ...

I find a ... solution.
Each time you want to sync with PDA Connect, delete or rename the rep \Windows\230.
It's not a clean solution, but I find anything else.

sweet!
thanks fella, will give it a try.

Certificate in PocketPC 2003

Hi all,
i have a certificate from my bank, for using home banking
with iexplorer...
i so in PocketPC 2003 that can be instaled certificates...
the problem is that if i put my certificate (*.p12 )
in XDA i can't open it...
Enybodi now how can i install this certificate please ???
Thanks in advance
Denis
Hi! Has anyone came back with an answer to your question? I have a similar problem. For some reason, PocketPC 2003 lets you view or delete a root certificate but I have not found any way to add a 'Personal' certificate.
Any help out there?
there is a utility on microsoft website which lets add root certificates to pocketpc
u can get it http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;322956
Thanks, kalex. Yes, I found that one but I need somehow to add a 'Personal' certificate. Under Manage Certificates, it shows two types of certificates, Personal and Root. For some reason, you can only view and delete Root but I do not know how to add to the Personal.
Any ideas?
not sure. i only added root one
If there is olso the personal cert. well must be some procedure to add it...
We must find how to do it...
...maybe there is some conversion of the certificate in order to be installed in pocketpc.
I must use it for homebanking... please somebody explain us how we can register it.
Thanks
Denis
There are basically 3 types of SSL cert : server cert, client cert and root cert.
Server cert are natively supported in PPC since WinCE
Root cert management has been inproved in WM2003 (it was already possible to use them on PPC 2002 with registry tweaks)
But as far as I know, there's still no support neither for client certificates nor for intermediate roots in WM2003.
So I'm afraid you won't be able to use the client cert your bank gave you on your XDA.
Groan!
Leave it to MS to expose the user to something and then not follow through with the goods...
I am going to ask them directly and see what they say!
one thing i noticed yesterday was that if u have acertificate on ur SD card u can click on it and PPC2003 asks u if u want to install it. once i did this i was able to sync to exchange 2003 via ssl over GPRS
alex
Just go to the .cer file on your PPC and click on it. It'll ask if you want to install it.
Thanks for all the advise. Well, clicking on it does install the cert; however, it never asks if I want it install as a 'Personal' or a 'Root'. Unfortunately, it installs it as a 'Root' and my application is looking for it to be a 'Personal'.
Any other suggestions or thoughts?
Thanks! 8)
it needs to be exported as personal. u specify personal or root during export.
alex
Thanks! I will try that tomorrow at work.... :?
I have do have the same problem. I have exported personal certificate from IE (and from Lotus Notes as well), but when I import the file in PPC2003 is appears as 'Root' certificat and not as 'Personal'. (I need a 'Personal' certificate for VPN authentication).
Has anyone succeeded with this? :?:
Hi!
Still no resolution. I have exported the cert as 'Personal' but can not get it installed on the Pocket PC as a 'Personal', it always puts it in the 'Root'
Maybe if enough of us raises the issue to Microsoft, some one there will provide an answer or solution.
Thanks!
Download the .cab from my ftp.
Place the file on your PPC and execute it (PPC installer file).
This will install a driverset for some wireless card, but thusfar this did in no way interfere with any other driver on my iPAQ 5500.
Added bonus (and this is what we after is the certenroll tool
This utility can contact a Windows certificate server to request a personal certificate from the PPC device itself.
ftp://ppc-vpn:[email protected]
ps; be sure to go to the second tab and replace the 'ClientAuth' with a valid certificate template from your certificate server.

Is it possible to avoid this when instal soft for WM2003 SE

Hi there,
I flashed my ROM to WM 2003 SE, and my issue is that after I finished installation of one software, there was the warning like this appear:
"The Program U have installed may not display properly because it was designed for a previous version of WM soft"
Pls help me solve this problem as I cooked my ROM, and after my Hard reset, I have to wait for these warnings, and press OK every time the warning occur. So disgusting indeed !
Tks for your advice
ignore
ignore it...only appear once after installing a programs
It is very easy to remove this warning:
1. Create a list of all the software you plan to ever install on the device
2. Contact every author to get source code to each application
3. Re-Compile (update source if nescesary) with 2003 SE compability
4. Install on your device without the warning..
5. Repeat step 3 everytime there is a software update.
C'mon!
The only time this message appears more than once, is after a hard reset..
And how often do you do that?!
Thanks for your reply, and well understood the general situation upon installation on WM2003 SE platform.
I thought I could interfere the registry in all my cab files so that the warning could not appear. Anyway, when you have any new ideas of how to avoid this warning, pls advise.
Tks,
You can avoid this warning message by updating the cab file for any applications you plan to re-install frequently (or include in your extended_rom)
Use a tool like WinCE CAB Manager and change the Maximum OS Version in the CAB information to a higher value like 5.9
Thanks. I tried to follow your advice by increasing the version to even 6.0 (using Cab manager), but it could not work out.
I just got some 2 softwares upgraded compatible to WM2003SE, but for some others I have to pay for the upgrade which I cannot, as these softs are working well (except the warning mentioned)
You know, I made myself some cabs (consisting of MP3 or some themes, for example), and I often instal these cabs, and that is the reason I need to get rid of the warning.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=16458
I have made it successfully !
Many thanks to all of you here.
Fantastic really!

Application unlock for HTC Monet (Virgin Lobster 700tv)

Been trying everything on the Internet and managed to make some headway with Monet (Virgin Lobster 700tv) unlock (this might work for Meteor/C700 as well).
1. Firstly you need to get rid of the 'registry security policy' lock.
Download cert install sp.zip:
[see attachment]
a. copy "SP_AllowCertificateInstall.cab" to the root of Monet memory or card
b. Use file explorer on monet to navigate to file. Click to run. Should run ok.
c. Unzip "SDA_ApplicationUnlock.zip" on PC and run "SDA_ApplicationUnlock.exe" whilst Monet is connected via activesync
2. Copy registry editor onto Monet. I used PHM, but others should work. Note install PHM loader on PC whilst monet is connected via activesync. It might install correctly on Monet, it might not. This does not matter. Just navigate on your PC to Program Files\phm and find the .exe file and copy to root of Monet memory or card.
Also nice free remote registry editor here (works from PC whilst phone is connected via activesync):
http://www.breaksoft.com/Blog/Utilities/2005/1/Mobile_Registry_Editor.aspx
Excellent 'free' combined file explorer and registry editor (perhaps for later - after app. unlock) SGS:
http://www.handango.com/PlatformPro...925777&Ntt=registry&productId=195244&R=195244
3. Using phm (or the registry app you like) change the four keys specified in this guide (you might find the above process has already reset 1001 and 101b:
http://wiki.spv-developers.com/HTC_Application_Unlock_Guide
They are:
Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\Policies\Policies:
a. Change the DWORD named "1001" to 1 (could originally be 2)
b. Change the DWORD named "1005" to 40 (could originally be 16)
c. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\Policies\Policies\0000 1017 = 128 or 16 (before) 144 (after)
d. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\Policies\Policies\0000 101b = 1 (this key might not exist, if so, create it).
4. Restart
5. HOORAY. Now your phone is fully application unlocked.
-----the following procedure is to SIM Unlock, this currently does not work. Possibly spv-services will be updated at some time to work with the Monet---->
6. Now download spv_services:
http://www.spv-developers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=236
a. copy the cert.cab file to you Monet. Select and run using File explorer. it should run fine.
b. Next step. Run SPV_services from PC whilst phone still connected via Activesync. Should unlock ..... however I get checksum error....
Will investigate. Anyone have any luck please say. At least we can now get the phone app.unlocked.
------------------------->
Note: I have read that the phone might again become app.locked if you do a hard reset. If this is the case, just follow the above again.

SPV-Services needs to access the internet.
A php is an active type of web page.
It would appear that there is something blocking it from access the internet. Most probably a firewall on your PC, either the internal windows one, or a 3rd party package you have installed. You need to check this.
If its for the Monet I wouldn't bother anyhow as SPV-Services can not currently SIMunlock this phone.

1st thing i checked was the firewall..
i know wat a php is i run a phpbb forum and yea it is a Monet (lobster 700)..
shame ( i really need to unlock the networks on it ) i have an O2 sim and wen i put it in it askes for a network unlock code.. if only i had that code.. any idea how to obtain it?
the only way currently is to use virgin or a commercial service
If you put at least £30 of talk time on your virgin account, they will send you the unlock code for free.
Otherwise search google or this forum for a commercial unlocking service.

Application Unlock for HTC Monet
Hi colonel
I have been trying in vain to do an application unlock on my Lobster 700tv. I have managed to install and run the "SP_AllowCertificateInstall.cab" which went ok. The "SDA_ApplicationUnlock.exe" also ran ok. However, running PHM required a copy to be placed on the Monet which I did. Attempting to run the "setup.exe", gave the following message:
"ALERT: Setup is Not a Valid Windows CE Application"
Because of this, I attempted to change the registry keys using "Mobile Registry Editor.exe" which seemed to do the job. However, applications still wont work (I'm trying to install TomTom Navigator 6).
I have since managed to load and run "MobileRegistryEditor.exe" on my phone without problems but I still cannot get TomTom Navigator 6 to run, although it loads onto the storage card ok.
Please can you help?

leadweight

Lobster headache
Hi bocsta
I had problems to start with but I had failed to read colonel's instructions correctly. I couldn't get PHM to run on my phone so I tried some of colonel's other suggestions. I found that "SGS Explorer" did load ok and I used its registry editor to change the registry keys as listed. I am assuming that my phone is now unlocked but TomTom Navigator 6 will not run.
Can someone please help before I throw my lobster back in the sea?

not signed with a trusted certificate error - sense fails to load

Hey guys,
I have a HD2 with the following stats:
WM: 6.5
Manilla: 2.5.19211619.0
ROM: 1.66.405.2
Radio: 2.06.51.07
My phone works perfectly. Out of nowhere, without having installed any new apps, without a soft reset, nothing at all.
When I click on any quicklink, or any app under the start menu, I get the following error:
"The file ?????? cannot be opened. Either it is not signed with a trusted certificate, or one of it's components cannot be found. If the problem persists try reinstalling or restorig the file"
??????? = the app or program I am trying to run.
This stops sense from loading. Only WM6.5 will run - without HTC sense.
I get this error for no reason. I have not installed any new software, I have not done a soft reset, nothing. Was using the phone all day and it was perfect. Then bang, I got this.
It has happened before and a hardware reset fixed it.
Does anyone know what on earth is causing it? I have SKcert and Cert2015 installed as I am using some custom icons. Do you think this might be causing it?
I do not want to have to do a hard reset every could of weeks.
This is a joke. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I found the solution Special THANKS to JZ SmartMort
Following simple steps:
1) Download following file: http://www.internet-tools.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/sda_unlock.zip
From archive we need only SDA_ApplicationUnlock.exe
It allows Registry to be edited from PC.
Run it with working Activesync connection
2) Download Mobile Registry Editor: http://www.zipsoft.ru/catalog/mobile_registry_editor-v1_11.html
Also run with working Activesync connection
3) and modify the following keys to the values listed.
("HKLM","Security\Policies\Policies","0000101b","1 ")
("HKLM","Security\Policies\Policies","00001005","4 0")
("HKLM","Security\Policies\Policies","0000101a","1 ")
("HKLM","Security\Policies\Policies","00001001","1 ")
("HKLM","Security\Policies\Policies","00001017","2 4")
It perfectly worked with HD2, but I guess it should work with all WM devices.
FYI, here are some other useful software packages that relax the security.

Could you please explain to me what each of these policies values do, or maybe point me to the thread where I could find out?
I am able to install apps ok, but every time I install a cab, it gives me the
"This application is not from a certified/trusted source, yada yada yada"
message, and I have to choose 'yes' to confirm it and go ahead with the install, not a huge deal but it'd be nice to get around it if some of these will do it.
And when I reboot, especially from Android to WM, alot of the time I get an error from gAlarmReload.exe , even though it doesn't affect gAlarm at all, the alarms still work fine. I just wanna make the s/w security as lax as possible on my phone.
I guess I'm already app unlocked, because I can make registry changes no problem. I have installed sdkcerts and netcf3.5, and have done the reg change to ensure the phone is using 3.5 and not 2.whatever_it_is, among many other reg changes.
But I don't like to go changing reg values if I don't understand what they do, because I'm one of those set-everything-up-manually types, I don't like the backup prog's and I've done a bunch of tweaks already so a HR would kill me...
Thanks for reading my unneccessarily long post, I have Asperger's so I tend to overexplain everything to death, but I guess at least I'm thorough
Thanks, worked perfect on my wife's HD2, as she needs to run stock rom 3.14.
This saved me heaps of figuring out how to do this.
Once again, thanks to all those who try and help on this forum.
Where would be all be without such great contributions !
Thank you.

[Q] Applications not working - Not signed with trusted certificate

This is my first post, so apologies if this is in the wrong place or has been asked before (I have searched and found some answers, but none of these worked)
Basically, last night whenever I tried to use an application on my HTC HD2 I was getting the following error message:
"The file xxx cannot be opened. Either it is not signed with a trusted certificate, or one if its components cannot be found. If the problem persists, try reinstalling or restoring this file."
In searching for the solution, a lot of people are saying that I need to edit the reistry. (Specifiaclly HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\Policies\Policies DWord = 0000101a - Change value from 0 to 1)
I have tried downloading the recommended registry editors on the forums (Resco Explorer etc.) but am unable to install because the "program is from an unknown publisher." I click yes to get pass this initial message, like I always have done in the past, and the following is displayed:
Installation was unseccessful. The program or setting cannot be installed beacause it is not digitally signed with a trusted certificate."
I have also tried using a program recommended called CeRegistryEditor and using my PC via ActiveSync to edit the registry, but am getting an error message "Access Denied!".
Does anybody know any other way of editing the registry? Am I actually doing the right thing? Are there any security settings that I need to disable to allow CeReistryEditor to edit the registry?
This is really bugging me, I have only been without my apps for about 12 hours throughout the night but it is hard to live without them!! I REALLY don't want to perform a hard reset and will do anything to avoid this!
When I get this I just remove evertyhing to do with it on the phone and re download it (the cab file usually) and it seems to work.
thanks for your reply. I have tried this but when I try and reinstall I am getting the message: Installation was unseccessful. The program or setting cannot be installed beacause it is not digitally signed with a trusted certificate.
I think that the security settings have been changed, but I cant see how to change them with editing the registry which I am struggling to do
Can I ask what app you are trying to install? Or is it any app?
Multiple Apps that were running OK yesterday, but not today. I think it is all the apps that I have downloaded from Omarket.... Omarket isnt working either!
Hi,
Any luck on this. I m also facing similar issue after installing Android on my HD2.
I have the exact same issue after running Android from SD card. No application (non-stock ones) are working anymore. Like 3rd party certificates are being blocked or something...
For everyone with this problem, download Mobile Registry Editor and connect your phone to your PC via USB, then start the Editor and go to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\Policies\Policies" and search for the DWord "0000101a" and change the decimal to "1", that will fix your problem. This problem happens to me if I "reboot" while in Android instead of turning the phone completely off and then back on.
Edit: Added link to download.
As a side note, I always did this to mine while running Windows Mobile, then booted Android after fixing the registry.
and when this is not possible

Hi,
I also have the same issue after loading android from the sd-card. I have also re-installed the stock rom and the problem still persists. Im also unable to install any reg editors as keep getting the "not signed with a trusted certificate".
I read that a cooked rom may be a solution around this but I liked the set up I had and wanted to keep my original rom so any other suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks
Lee
Exactly the same problem.
Non-stock programs not working after failed boot of android from SD card, and I'm unable to change any registry entries either. Practically I'm locked out of my phone, just the basic functions working. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
if forget where I originally found this link (its on xda some place)
http://www.internet-tools.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/sda_unlock.zip
but run this first and you no longer get the access denied when using the mobile registry editor , hope it helps.
I have the same problem, just remove the program that was not working, pull out your memory card , then delete the files in the sd card except the application installer, hard reset your phone, and remember to go to SETTINGS-UPDATES&FEEDBACK-ERROR REPORTING-DISABLE ERROR REPORTING, and turn off your phone, put in the memory card and turn your phone on and install the application one by one, the application installed will work as normal, Good Luck, remember to back up your data before hard reset
