[REQ] To Chefs:: Providing an option to choose application to install while flashing - Touch Pro, Fuze ROM Development

To All Chef,
During flashing the ROM, when the customization job runs, is it possible to provide the list of application's that come along with the ROM and let the user choose the set of application he wants?
Also, if possible, the job can even delete the cab files of the application which are not choosen by the user. This will save ROM space i guess. I am not a developer, so i am suggestion instead of do something about it, sorry.
Thanks.

I'm not exactly a chef, but I'll respond anyway
For your first question, yes, that is possible, as long as someone develops an app to do that. Hell, I could develop it if there's enough demand.
As for deleting CABs that weren't installed, that is unfortunately not possible because they are already part of the ROM.

Yes it is available. You are talking about the Rom Kitchens available in this forum. Just take a look in the rom kitchen posts then you'll know what I'm talking about. Here are two that currently has the lastest aGPS fix. At0mAng and Da_G's Kitchen and the corresponding packages. The kitchen allows you to pick what you want in your rom, it is very easy to use and you should no doubt give it a try.

Thats actual ROM cooking. But i was mentioning about the 'customization' program that runs right after you flash your ROM. If we have an option setup in that program to choose application before it installs, that would nice from users perspective. Just a thought. I am sure everyone will like it.

I am glad to hear that you could develop. (I dont have that skills). If you develop, we can probably let all the Chef know to use it, if they want.

Reading through this thread I knew it was only a matter of time until I found the post with that link
I liked that app but never really used it. Always seemed like too much of an extra step on first boot. Not to mention, some cabs require user input to install and would freeze the device temporarily requiring a soft-reset once it tries to install them.

That would be one cool ass app!
I was thinking of something like this as an xml file. Can it be done with XML? I don't know XML that well but I think it might be able to.

Can you be more specific as to what you were thinking with XML?

I wrote a simple Mortscript that generates a SDConfig.txt based on what files exist in a specific cab folder...
Simpest solution is what many chefs do: Lite and Loaded ROMs
SDconfig in the apps you want to a lite ROM or uninstall the ones you do not from a loaded ROM...
or you could always cook your own custom ROM

I'm guessing the device is not actually frozen. Generally, during customization screen input is locked to prevent the user from interfering with customization.
The device will appear to be frozen because the buttons and screen do not respond. If you were to call your phone you would see that the call comes through, but you can't answer because the buttons are locked out (trust me, a few times my wife has called my cell while I was testing ROMs and a few times she called right when it was doing customization).
You would need to unlock the screen input before running the cab to ensure the user can enter data.
example config.txt
Code:
LOCK:Enabled
TSK: \WINDOWS\Guava Bubbles.tsk
LOCK:Disabled
CAB: \WINDOWS\Microsoft_Sounds.cab
LOCK:Enabled
CFG: \WINDOWS\config_PT.txt

I get the impression that the real goal of this is to prevent the installation of a few items that the rom chef likes but others don't. For example, I personally find no use in SecondToday, but a few chefs include it with their roms.
I think that this would be a non-issue if most applications were uninstallable after setup...at least the apps that tend to be upgraded frequently (Opera, TomTom) and the ones only popular with a few users (SecondToday, TouchResponse).
The argument is "just cook your own or use a different one", but that doesn't really answer many people for whom one rom is nearly perfect, but there's just a little tweak or two to the installed apps that would make it perfect.
I'm not sure this really needs another app or any extra steps in the install process. Not when this would slow down usage for many people, and only really benefit a small percentage

Personalization Customization App

Hello there,
I am not certain if this question has been posed a hundred times before or not. If it has, I apologize for asking again; however, I have searched through the forums and haven't found the answer yet.
My question is: Does an applet or utility exist which could be run after I update the ROM on my phone (or perform a hard reset, etc.) which would essentially read in the entire Windows Mobile registry, then allow me to customize the OS to my liking, then finally re-read the registry and save the deltas off to a .REG file?
I love to continually update the ROM on my phone and after owning an Apache and now a Titan, I have become pretty proficient getting the phone back to the way I like it; however, I would very much love to double-click a .REG file (or whatever) to have all of the customizations reapply immediately.
Does such an animal exist?
Thank you,
Erik

I havent seen anything that will create the delta's that you want but SPB Mobile back up will create a registry capture than you can reload that exact registry from that point in time. I dont know if that will help you but after months of not getting an app here or there to cook into my kitchen correctly I realized why bother. Just use the back up program after flashing and installing and I get the EXACT results I was looking for.
Good luck!

I would suggest against this if you are flashing different ROMs (i.e. 3.2.0 and 3.2.1, etc) as there will be different drivers that these programs rely on. It could cause some problems that a hard reset won't fix. Some people see no problems and other senior members have felt the burn after trying to reimage their device.
I would suggest looking into UC customizations for a better solution.

Phone skinning different after 3.0.4

I have been working with TDial Designer and have had difficulties after 3.0.4 getting the dialer skin to look the same. Maybe someone else has overcome this problem and could give me some guidance. Here's what I have done.
Before, I was able to select BlueFrog dialer in TDial and have the keys skin to look like the screenshot20.jpg below (you can see the background transparent). Now with the recent DCD ROMs it looks like screenshot2.jpg thumbnail below where the keys remain black though the background is there for the process.
I have tried both the Old Vogue (Touch) and the New Vogue (BlueFrog) options in TDial and neither work. I have included the cabs for those if you want to test them on your phone.
I install the Kitchen using DCDs option for the new Vogue dialer checked (no OEMs replaced) and although it looks the same before I try to install the cab, it doesn't work like it used to.
I would be glad to replace the OEM with the one from 3.0.4, but I know DCD has been doing some upgrading to the functionality of the dialer and don't want to break some of the work that he has been doing (I like new and shiny stuff).
Thanks!
P.S. Disregard the top and bottom bars as one of them was using WisBar.
I don't use any third party dialers. If you have all the png files (for each number, function etc) you can simply copy them to \Windows.

I guess I could do that, do you copy manually or using UC?
If you use UC do you do it with XML or by copying the whole folder?
I do it via UC, but with a cab file I made. I don't use XML anymore with UC, I've cabbed everything. If you zip up all the files and post it, I'll make a cab for you.

Here ya go.
I used the TDial export to give to you, but I am not sure which you will need (old vogue or new). Let me know if this works or if you need something else.
REQUEST: If you are up to making another of your amazing wikis, I think a tutorial on how to make cabs for xml and file importing/copying (like this dialer for example) would be HIGHLY used and appreciated. I would definitely buy you some beer for that one (I may even take Boston Celtics as my new fav BB team).
Here you go.
If I have time, maybe I'll do a wiki.

That would be something that would be used across the board, and may be as widely referenced as any other out there. Plus it would be valuable for anyone with WM, not just Titans. Better that it be done by a Bostonian
Thank you very, very much. I will try to take this one apart and figure out what you did.

Yes, thank you so very much for making that.
With the re-release of 3.2.2 I was scrambling to get updated before I left work and just got a chance to sit down now to thank you. It works perfectly and will look at a few cab programs to figure out how you did it.
Is there a way that the phone popup reg entry could be affected by this cab? I have had that problem with my TDial dialers, and still needed to after this too. I wonder if some other cab I am installing has this key change as I assume you just copied the pictures I sent you to the windows dir. I will have to do some investigation to find where I am getting that change as DCD PM'd me and let me know that my bug was only on my side and not in his kitchen when it happened before your cab.
You are the man GC, I will buy you some beer next week when paychecks come in.

Scott’s VZW ROM - Working VZ Navigator (eRice kitchen v1.03.7) - OUTDATED!

Scott’s VZW ROM - Working VZ Navigator (eRice kitchen v1.03.7) - Rev 1 out!
UPDATE 19 DEC 2008 @ 18:00 Central Time. New ROM is out. Consider this thread discontinued. Files will be on the website for historical purposes. I would recomend upgrading to my latest ROM here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=461524
UPDATED 12 Dec 2008 @ 19:00 Central Time
** You will need to dial *22899 after you flash to reprogram. Do this before anything else.
** Other model phones from other carriers will loose custom EPST settings per NexVision's testing.
REVISION 1 Changes at the end of this modified original post
This ROM IS FOR VZW USERS ONLY!
Greetings fellow VZW users. My first creation for us is Custom a ROM based off of eRice’s kitchen in this thread: http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=46965.
ROM Info:
**The ROM I created is nearly identical to the “STOCK” ROM with a couple minor additions and an upgrade to the core CE OS files to version 5.2.20931. I pulled all the apps and drivers from the leaked VZW ROM in this into the eRice kitchen from this post: http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=42741
**I stripped out the Sprint drivers and applications from the eRice kitchen and added the VZW drivers and Apps from the VZW leaked ROM. It was fairly seamless to do. I tested VZ Nav and it worked great!
** This ROM is considerably more smooth than the stock ROM and more responsive in most applications including Touch Flow. No, it doesn’t fix our missing memory problem but I dont think you will notice it as much now. What makes it great is it is based on the 20931 CE OS but retains the 100% stock look via proper drivers and applications.
**VZ Navigator runs well on this ROM!
As far as I know this is the first “Custom” ROM with any sort of GPS for the XV6850.

*Revision One Changes*
**********************
Added N2A Weather Patch to Autoinstall. INcludes most US cities and patched weather server.
Added Diamond TF3D Config to Autoinstall (Runs with no errors)
Added Nue Fonts with a few extra fonts than what the OEM normally has. They look great on this screen!
Added Advanced Config 3.3
Added Turn off SMS Sent Notification - cabbed by "mixtapeking1900"
Added DotNET CF 2.0 along side DotNet 3.5. DotNet 2.0 installs first then ver 3.5 via Autoinstall (CONFIG.TXT in extended package OEM for the kitchen users.) I bieleve either could be removed but not truly sure. DotNet 3.5 was needed for Advanced Config.*Note - Selecting dotNet 3.5 in the KITCHEN will cause problems! Dont do it unless you proplery modify config.txt to not load them in the AutoRUN.
Removed IE 6.1 (Breaks My Button Setup!)
Removed JetPrint Bluetooth printing (whatever it is called, not sure)
Fixed My Button Settings not launching from the Settings Tab in Manila
Fixed Voice Command> I added it back in. Go to "Settings -> Voice Command" to turn it on before it will RUN!
Kept HTC YouTube
Kept HTC Network Plug in
Kept Internet Sharing
*All Three of these are from the eRice Kitchen. Big thanks to eRice for all 3!
No other installed programs than those listed and the VZW OEM apps.
The ROM is now pretty close to Stock which was the goal. This should be the last revision unless someone finds a major bug.
AS always, please report bugs and any thing you like as well.
Files located at www.scottcrosler.com
Mad Thanks go out to eRice, Commenex and ImCoKeMan for making this possible! Without them none of this would exist!
UPDATED 12 Dec 2008 @ 19:00 Central Time
Basic Installtion Instructions
Download ROM and extract to desktopp (Now includes RUU). Start the ROM Upgrade Utility and follow instructions Flashes just like ANY other phone or ROM. Flashing will destroy ALL data on phone. Always sync with ActiveSync before starting the upgrade utility OR place your phone in bootloader mode (Power, VolDown, and reset)
A call to *228 or *22899 (automated activation line) WILL BE REQUIRED for normal usage! This is true of ALL ROM's and even a simple hard reset of the Verizon stock ROM.
Before you flash you MUST be unlocked. I do not support the unlock process or the software but I can tell if you that if you follow the instructions at the link it works perfect.
Link to unlocker is here: http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=42503
Link to ROM and RUU is here: http://www.scottcrosler.com/
Bugs so far:
Wiped Clean on new revision
**Here is where you will see gains with this ROM over stock...
1. Navigating through menu's, especially the settings menu.
2. Smoothness of TF3D (debateable depending on the tabs.) First time will be slow for EVERY device if you leave ALL the tabs enabled. Each tab is a like a sep app that has to load when you select it. After the tabs are loaded you will see even more gains over the stock ROM.
3. File explorer. Go to the Windows folder. No further explanation needed there, trust me. The stock file explorer took nearly 15 seconds to load Windows. This does it almost instantly.
Updated Kitchen Files!
This is for the eRICE KITCHEN. This is not my own Kitchen but an add on of VZW OEM files to the eRice kitchen.
Its the OEM pack that I used to create this ROM. Its what I stripped out of the VZW leaked ROM. I added just a couple OEMs that are not in the cooked ROM. I dont have the original OEM's broken out! IF anyone wants to break it down further like eRice did with his original kitchen let me know and I will host it on my site.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR KITCHEN SET UP:
Download and extract (to desktop) eRice 1.03.07 kitchen from here:
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=42796
Delete the entire OEM folder from inside the kitchen!
Download and extract the VZW OEM folder from www.scottcrosler.com and place it in the eRice kitchen as to replace the one you just delted. I made one minor change to the pure VZW OEM folders.I dropped the phonecanvas XML provisioning file into OEM apps. i think it supposed to be in SYS but I dont know.... It works fine the way it is. If you have never heard of the file then ignore this part of the post.
Start RaphealKitchen.CMD and follow instructions.
***Do not select DotNET 3.5 in the kitchen!!!. It is enabled by default, delelect it. Will cause issues.
I will try to support the kitchen as much as possible. Please do not bother eRice with this hybrid kitchen as I am sure he will not support my hybrid creation.
Thank eRice for this kitchen.
Thank the original poster of this thread for the leaked ROM I worked with:
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=42741. Not sure who posted it.
Thank me for putting it together!
I AM NOT TAKING CREDIT FOR ANY OF THE FILES. I do however take credit for converting to VZW OEM.
Should there be a link to your ROM here?
Are there instructions on how to flash?
Like putting phone into bootloader mode or anything else necessary?
Does the unlock process wipe the phone or does only the ROM update wipe?
Anyone tried this yet? Any reviews?
It's a lot of work to reinstall everything and to re-apply my special settings, even though I've been documenting what I've done.
Also, I was thinking of trying that Telus radio. Can I still try that on this? Does a radio update/change wipe the device clean or that's non-destructive?

I updated the second post with the steps you need. Sorry was trying not to get flamed on my thread. Someone over at PPCGeeks flamed me for pretty much no reason other than the fact that they could. It only stopped me from releasing my ROM over there. Oh well. There loss. Too bad because there are some really good people over there. The eRice kitchen was perfect in every aspect of a ktichen. I was never so impressed. Impressed enouhg to download the leaked ROM and portover the VZW software ;c) Its a nice change over the stock CE OS. If you flash let me knwo what you think.
Hi Scott,
I've been lurking on both forums since I got my Titan last December. I have learned much from everyone here and over at PPCG: these are the best resources by far for those of us into our phones and the tech behind it.
I agree that you were treated less than "professionally" over at PPCG, and hope that you will continue to work on the VZW TP/XV6850. Thanks for this great use of Eric's kitchen tools and stock ROM, along with your knowledge on how to get them all working for us! My take from the eRice thread is that he has no issue whatsoever with you using his stuff, and in fact he welcomes it for us VZW stepchildren... hehe.
This ROM does indeed kick arse, and hopefully GC and others will figure out the PRI lockdown and we will all have an amazing little machine to play with: it is w/o a doubt a much slicker device than the Titan, and I dug that little unit for the better part of a year
Cheers Pal

They will figure out the PRI crap. It will take time. I wish skywing would port over his adapter program. I could incormporate that and we would have 100% GPS just like everyone else. He stated in his thread he was not interested in doing so. Thats a huge loss for us that we never even had ;c(
For the record!
For the record:
I have always asked permission before I redistribute any item found here. I asked DCD for his kitchen when I posted my R4R ROM for the Titan's.
I asked eRice specifically if I could port his stuff over for VZW users. His response was:
"if you can get the sprint carrier files split from the rom/kitchen and include the vzw ones, more power to you. that's what this forum is about. sharing ideas and results and improving on them for the benefit of everyone."
Its posted here. Just for the record ;c)

A few people have tried on PPCGeeks with great success as posted above.
Keep it coming. Two things to note. And YES I Just installed this ROM.
First, I had to *228 (not surprised but it is required to get data connections to work. This has been true for every ROM i've played with as well as custom ROM's i've built in the kitchen.)
Second, Comm Manager is missing from the slider menu with TF3D enabled. (Although still accessible via the keyboard shortcut.)
I will play some more and let you know what else I find. Thanks.

The comm manager TAB or the comm manager link in the settings Tab? Its just fine for me. There is no Comm manager TAB in VZW version of TF3D.
I see you use the PPC Kitchen. That does have the Comm Manager Tab and you are used to that. This version is stragiht ripped from the ROM. No changes AT ALL. The stock phone doesnt have COmm manager Tab.
How about responsiveness?
Launching VZ Nav opened Opera and downloaded the CAB. CAB launched got to privacy screen but complained about not being able to save privacy settings. Only option is to lick OK. You are then brough tto the "default" VZ NAV error screen telling you there was a problem with your GPS device. I do have the CAB for VZ NAV now however.
Re-Launching VZ NAV produces the same result. Unable to save privacy and crashes out.
My mistake. You're right. I've gone through so many ROM's that it's a blur. The "Communications" link is still under the "Settings" tab in TF3D as it should be.
So far responsiveness is good. I have not configured the settings for my "regular" business use however.
Perhaps the reason VZ NAV will not install is because it's the official signed version?

No, It always crashes twice at the initial set up, even on the Stock ROM. Its a crappy program I know! Try it a third time and you are good from then on. If not let me know and I will upload the Cab that I have. Nothing special about it though.
EDIT: I relfashed my phone, installed and it worked for me. It still does the three times to load problem. Two GPS errors for me. Then the third time it starts. THis is the EXACT behavior of the stock ROM.
bkurek,
How do you "go through so many roms"? Isn't it an hour or more to reinstall all of your apps and personal settings or is there some easier way that I'm missing?
I can't restore with SPB Backup, right?
Would you say this rom is noticeably faster?

I go through them because I enjoy doing so and I'm looking for what *I* want. Yes it can be that long but I don't go through all the motions until I've found the right combination/foundation to build on. I did not for instance configure ALL of my email accounts or setup active synch in vista, etc etc
Yes it does feel very snappy but just like anything else you'll find it to be faster today and go back to *****ing about how slow it is tomorrow. It's a matter of perception in the end. You'll always want more. I'm actually more interested in a stable build than a faster one because I already know it'll never be as fast as I want it to be. I have experienced a myriad of stability issues that if I don't find a remedy for I will return this phone. They manifest mostly in the messaging components at this time. I have not had to soft reset a phone this much since 1990-something. Speaking of which, as a completely uninteresting side note, I have not posted to a forum since early 1990-something but the point is that I do like this device and would like to see it improved upon is why I am taking the time to post now. It’s a cool phone. Give it some time. Someone, somewhere will make it faster and more stable. I think.

I relfashed my phone, installed and it worked for me. It still does the three times to load problem. Two errors that you just click though then the third time it starts. THis is the EXACT behavior of the stock ROM. It crashes twice on the Stock ROM as well.
Also did you install to storage card or main memory? I only install to main memory.

Interesting. My stock did not have this problem but it came pre-loaded with VZ NAV. Third time is the charm.
Program files and things I don't want to lose always go to main for me.

What is the newest build for WM 6.5?

Hi guys, kind of confused with the build numbers, which build is the newest build for WM 6.5 that I can use with my Titan? Any good ROM suggestions on that build? Thanks guys.
Watch this fourm...

The moment a new build is released, they post about it there. The newest as of today (not sure if they have released a rom for the titan yet) is 21812 but, it seems to change every other day
I've been running 21806 the last few days and it has been great so far.
LOL, 21812 is already out!
Yeah I saw that less than a day after I had my phone how I wanted it. Ugh... it's like waiting for the new CPU or new car model to be released.
I have a question. How are the 6.5 ROM's obtained exactly? I'd like to start getting involved, cooking, etc. Currently running 21812, but don't care for the RAM and battery meters, or the "fave people" plugin.

If you don't like the meters the goto windows\startup folder and delete the two files. dcibattery and qwertymemory
Use chome editor to remove the fave people plugin.

Error Deleting File
Cannot delete 'dciBattery': There has been a sharing violation.
The source or destination file may be in use.
Thanks guys
Thanks guy, looks like I upgraded a week early and I'm going to have to upgrade again today. Thanks for the link, guess this is what we put up with for wanting the latest and greatest.

I had the same problem. What worked for me is cutting them and paste them into a different folder and then deleting the files from there. Weird but worked.

Yeah I'm posting on that thread as we speak. What I meant by obtain is how they get the ROM releases. Do we lowly members just have to keep waiting for a developer to post them on the forums?
I guess this sort of answers my question.

Are you asking on how to create your own rom ? I'm also looking for the way to create my own rom and figure out how to troubleshoot problems with them. A lot of rom creators use PPCkitchen to create there roms by putting in the files for the new builds then building it on there and there is other kitchens for some builds as well.
Where they are coming from ? Chinese or Japanese sites, I forget the link, they have them all listed there, it tends to pop up from those sites, then trickles down to ppcgeeks, then to xda... With some searching in that fourm I linked before, you'll see links to the builds on there.

Thanks. Will try that.
So these roms still do not work with the camera? I remember reading about it. Is it worth it? I know you have even less memory on startup. I just wish 6.1 would be able to use the marketplace.

They certainly do work with the camera. There are two modes, though:
High Memory Mode -> You cannot use the camera, but you gain an addition 5ish meg of RAM.
Low Memory Mode -> You can use your camera, but RAM is lower.
You can switch back and forth at will with a simple utility in your Settings menu and then soft resetting.
Oh wow that is cool. Hmmm. Maybe I will wait for development when fellow xda members can update an os without clearing any data. But hearing that is tempting. I would probably just leave the camera on. Maybe someone should make a new lighter camera for that mode. In the mean time I will look for some WM6.5 on Titan videos.

[Q] android kitchen

hello guys just set up dxsidia android kitchen not sure if anyone uses this but i have a few questions and since dxsidia does not support this anymore was hoping someone could answer them for me...
1. is the major obvious one does it work on the photon in the thread it does say unconfirmed for atrix but nothing on photon?
2.after creating the work folder i go into advanced options and start editing? i realize since there is nothing on the photon most of my answers are probably going to be try and see but no harm in asking right...
3.it has a set of pluign scripts labeled sgs2/ sgs these are for samsung galaxy s right so i dont want to use any of them?
4. there is a task killer tweak you can add from it what exactly is this?
5. add data/app functionality??? lets you add or remove apps??? not sure is why im asking
there are more q's but i figured if i can get these answered im doing good
ive read the thread for a few days now and seems simple but confusing at same time seems like its a one click type thing but if you dont know for sure what you are clicking can really screw up and have to start from scratch... anywho trying to do more around here and would appreciate any help anyone has thanks a ton
1) Yes in terms of an apk is an apk. No in terms of the updater script (IIRC)
2) Yes, assuming theres options in the advanced menu you'd like to impliment
3) You don't need the Samsung plugins.
4) Changes minfree settings in the boot image. Be aware the ICS impliments memory handling differently than previous versions.
5) Adds a script and folder for data/app partition so you can include optional apps. Optional apks (things like nascar for example) could be placed in here and would be installed on flash. But because they are in /data, the user has the option to uninstall through manage apps.
Personal Opinion: While the kitchen may be a convienient way to do things, it leaves little (Read: No) room for learning. Assuming you'd like to create a body of work to be publically distributed and not just for personal use, it might be worth the upfront investment in figuring out how to do/script this stuff yourself. That's not me trying to be an elite a-hole, that's me giving solid advice.
Cheers!
Yeah im a trying to learn as much as i can ive been reading and reading and reading have always known about the kitchen just never tried it thanks for the response you didnt come off as elitest is all good i find its easier for me to learn by trying things while reading about it granted i do research in great lengths not just in xda but other forums, blogs, links so on and so on before even downloading these tools but as i said it seems to sink in better when i can go ok i use this option this what it means thats what it did this what its supposed to do/look like
Sent from my MB855 using xda premium
So ive been trying all day to spit out a rom with the kitchen and no matter what i do it doesnt install either get status 7 or 0 says was looking for 4agrs but only found 3 and sometimes says 3args but only found 2 ive tried using a rom i know flashes and just running it through the kitchen and flashing the output... idk what im doing wrong but starting to think it is not photon compatible any insider tips? i know i already asked this but not quite ready to surrender to defeat on this yet and i REALLY dont want to install linux or ubuntu on my computer would have to partition it and just not to keen on doing that to the family computer my kids and wife play on it almost more than i do
