Need Help PLEASE! MMs.apk file push - Droid Eris Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone!
I am trying to install the Vanilla Mms.apk I downloaded from this forum
I Am running VanillaRom from GrdLock.. So.. I have root
When I try to "adb remount" so I can push this file..
"adb remount operation not permitted" .. So I am unable to get to the "Push" command
Also tried using Astro File Manager .. -dr file permissions on the /system/app folder not letting me copy paste the Mms.apk file..
What Am I doing wrong?
Thanks for any help

Do you have root explorer? Maybe you would have better luck with that. You could probably remove the one your rom comes with under /system/app and place the new .apk onto your sd and move it to /system/app. That's what I usually do when adb doesn't work for me.

I downloaded an awesome app called Ghost commander. It Required superuser rights and it was able to remount, copy to system/app. Then I remounted it & rebooted it, installed it, and it worked.

Root: Replacing system sound files

Ok so I have rooted my Hero and all is well. I've been trying to replace the sound files in system/media/audio/ui where the keyboard sounds are. I find that I cannot move a file into that folder, or apparently any of those folders. When I try to paste a copied or cut file using root explorer into the ui folder, the file just doesn't appear.
Why is this?

have you tried with and without file extention?
Yes. Root explorer just won't let me move any files around in the phone memory. Do I have to do it using adb?
I have a feeling its Root Explorer not working properly in Hero.
I could do this easily on my magic, but I get the same thing - looks like its copied the file, but when I paste, nothing happens at all.
I did manage to delete the Stocks app. from the device (don't use it or need it) using root explorer but other attempts to copy and pasdte have failed.
I have however managed to successfully use Astro File Manager to copy a wallpaper file from the device memory and paste to the SDcard. Will explore Astro a little further and see if it can do more on the device.

Phew, not just me being thick then....
I spent most of today trying to backup an .apk from /data/app-private to /sdcard. No luck with Root Explorer, adb pull or a 'cp' from the shell. "Remote file does not exist" was the result of the last two, but it's displayed by ls.
I think anything in app-private is a no go anyway as it contains copy protected apps. With regard to astro - it can copy from device in certain locations, and paste to sd to back up, but it can't delete from the device, and it can't copy or move files to the device.

Hmm, thanks Daisy. Will get on to the app's developer, as it was his advice to gain the ability to change location settings that I tried to follow.

Try
Code:
adb shell
su
cat /data/app-private/some.app.apk > /sdcard/some.app.apk
exit
exit
adb pull /sdcard/some.app.apk some.app.apk
...it worked for me on a stock, rooted HTC Hero.

Unless you made other changes than rooting, the /system partition is mounted read-only by default. As far as I know, you'll have to follow one of the root guides to mount it read-write (like you probably did to get /system/bin/su in place) and then do whatever changes you'd like.
Personally, I got tired of the boot audio real fast, so I changed useAudio in /system/media/boot_animation.xml from "1" to "0". Ahh, blessed boot silence...

Help Needed With Root Explorer (Root folder in general )

Hi everyone.
I have just rooted my xperia x10a and in terminal after hitting whoami I get UID 0. I tried root explorer and it showed me the root directory with all the files and then I think I did something wrong. I went to terminal to try out some stuff and after using the command cd /data/app-private I can no longer see the root directory files. I don't know if that command and this are related issues but my knowledge is limited in this field. I have superuser installed and titanium backup works well and shows all my apps so I'm not sure what's up. Superuser shows that root explorer has UID 0 root access and I get the r/w option in root explorer but root directory shows up empty. Please someone clear this up for me. Any help at all is much appreciated.
Edit:
After digging some more it seems that root explorer does show me the contents of the data folder that astro can't see. I'm just confused as to why I can't see the contents of the root folder.
Thanks for your help.

I think that the 'root' folder has always been empty, even on my old rooted phone.
Thank you for clearing that up. I was almost certain it had something in there before but I'm not surprised if I'm wrong or simply didn't pay attention. Anyway thanks again for taking the time to reply.

Also keep in mind that Astro is not working with root permissions. In reallity each application is working with it's own permissions that can be compared to a normal user, not superuser. Some applications request specifically superuser or root permissions which can only be granted on a rooted phone.
So basically a normal app won't use root and will therefore see less than an app that actually knows to and uses root.

[Q] Trying to replace a system apk

Hi,
I'm attempting to replace Email.apk on my miui rom. This is the method I am using:
Code:
adb push Email.apk /sdcard/
adb shell
su
rm /system/app/Email.apk
rm /system/app/Email.odex
mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mmcblk0p9 /system
cp /sdcard/Email.apk /system/app
reboot
When the phone has rebooted, my changes do not take affect. To check, I pulled the /system/app/Email.apk back, and found it to be the original version.
Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong here?
Thanks,
Have figured this out...
adb appears to send some kind of cached version over. Renaming the file before transferring forced adb to use the correct file, and all is well.

Delete the ES File Explorer on ICS Buttah

Am trying to fix the ES File Explorer Root access issues by following the steps posted by Joker Fuel in one of the TP forum.
I cant get to delete the current apk under /system/app using any of the File Explorers. How do i get this file deleted ? Any help.
This is what am trying to accomplish:
OK guys, for u guys that are having issues Using ES File Explorer Root permission.
The Root does not work while the app is in /system/app.
so to get it working, u must delete the com.estrongs.android.pop-1.apk
couple ways to do it. u can download a free file explorer off the market and delete the file under /system/app
---------------------------------
reboot your new BUTTAH
download ES from the market
If I am understanding what you want to do correctly you need to remount /system as read/write so you can remove the file.
There are many ways to do this. I like to use RomToolbox, available on the market. Once installed you can open up "Scripter" and there will be a couple of pre-defined scripts, one to remote System is Read/Write.
After you run that script you can jump to the Root browser, one button above, and delete what you need from the /system/app directory.
Remember to remount your /system as Read-Only using the other script, or reboot when your done. It is a bit dangerous to leave it as Read/Write. Better safe than sorry
Thanks. gonna give it a try !
Titanium Backup works on Buttah. Downloaded through market. Then I was able to pull ES through that. Then re-install through market. Now root access and mountable system.

[Q] Rooted Nook Tablet with Cm7 and rom manager issue

When I try to install the premium version of Rom Manager i get "youre trying to replace a system app , do you want to continue ?" .
I click yes and then get "App not installed"
Any help or suggestions plz ?
Thanks
do you have root access? because that is necessary to change any system app in any case. Super User should pop up if you do have root. If it does not, maybe you accidentally denied it root privileges on first start.
Yes im sure its rooted and i checked Superuser logs on rom manager.
"created allowed allowed" and its in the allowed list.
Im guessing the installation is failing because its a system app thats in use or something ?
Since its a system app and installed via CM7 i cant even delete it.
It doesnt show in the installed apps list.
Any help is appreciated.
There is a directory under the /system folder I believe(bin?). Under that directory are a series of apk files and I bet there is still a file there for the rom manager. If you remove that with root explorer or something similar you should be good to go.

To anyone having a similiar problem this is how I solved it.
-remount system/app dir to RW
-delete offending APK
-remount /data/data to RW
-delete offending dir (in rommanger's case it was com.koushikdutta.rommanger
-reboot
-reinstall.
