What froyo apps did you install? - Legend Themes and Apps

Which apps did you all install when the OTA hit?
My first install was network traffic stats, to learn just what was using all my gigs (turns out it was system processes)
Next was some apps to SD app.
Anyone found some really nifty froyo apps, you'd like to tell about?
Sent from my HTC Legend using XDA App

Haven't got it yet, but I plan on getting Voice Actions if it hasn't been bundled in yet. Haven't thought about anything else yet though.

Chrome to Phone is my favourite Froyo app, and my first install post OTA update. Really useful just to throw links to my device before going out; I also set it to load the pages automatically while I'm on my home network, so they're ready by the time I'm out of the door.
Other than than I've just moved a ton of my apps to the SD, nice to have the memory cleaned up a little!

Looking for an App

Hello all,
I went online to My Bell the other day to check up on my data usage, not at all concerned as I have a 6Gb/month plan & only used less than 1 Gb in my first month, even after downloading a ton of apps, do imagine my surprise when I used almost 4Gb so far! Fortunately, my month is almost over..... Obviously, there was an app that never closed properly and was constantly streaming data.... Over 2.3Gb in one session!
So, I was wondering if anyone knows of an app that will monitor how much data individual apps are using, so I can keep an eye on it, or perhaps get rid of it altogether...
Any help here would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Did you try something as simple as typing "monitor data" into the Market? There are a ton of apps that do what you're asking.

Of course I did...but so far, all I can find are apps that tell me the total data usage overall. What I'm looking for is an app that will break the data usage down by apps on my phone, telling me how much each individual app is using, so I can determine which one is hogging my data usage.....
So, if anyone knows of such an app, I would really appreciate a link to it!
Thanks!

If you're running JI6 firmware you can long press the home button on your phone to pull up Samsung's task manager (it's in the app folder too). From there you can monitor what apps are running and kill off what's not needed.
What apps do you have installed that may be polling the net? Do you have sync on and polling every hour? Do you run Pandora/Slacker (those eat up a lot of bandwidth)? Any widgets that update news feeds/social status?
I know there's a few apps that monitor overall data usage but I'm not aware of anything that monitors individual apps and tells you what's using the most.
~SB
Thanks SB!
No, unfortunately, Bell hasn't pushed the JI6 firmware update out to its customers yet...I'm still on JH2....
Yeah...I know how to stop apps that way...I was just hoping that I could see which app has been hogging my bandwidth... Oh well...perhaps I have to keep track of what I'm doing & when I'm doing it, and see if that will work....a little archaic, but hopefully that'll work....
Thanks

[Q] There are Apps in the background

Dear Friends!
Glad to be here today (after 2 days! )
My dear Streaker is here!!
As the norm is, I have been busy tinkering with the stock material for couple o days, and I will continue to do so for some more time!
___________________________________________________________
Query: There are too many apps running (background) all the time!! I kill them, they resurrect!, How to do away with that?
Solution applied: Used Advanced task killer (but, apps resurrect!)
Another Solution tried: In Settings>Account & Sync settings> Unchecked Background data and Auto sync options. (Now, they dont connect to the net, but, they still restart!!)
Another Solution: Force close (from Manage apps) .. (Still same issue!)
Now, How can I tell the apps to come up only when I call them!?
(And some other apps I want to schedule them to come up every hour or so.. like my Gmail/FB)
____________________________________________________________
And, So far has been amazing experience!!
The screen is football field sized!! (Monster! yikes Scooby!)
Digging up all old posts to read some problems faced by new users..
Current hobby: Market and apps.
Future hobby: Roms and Flash!
Thank you all for your help!
care,
Sony.
Welcome to the cool kids club! I'm in a somewhat similar situation, I got my streak just before the massive snowstorm hit. Some of those apps need to be running... if you close some of them you may not get updates/notifications, or you can shut down your phone/data connection, or lose the use of multitouch.

from what i understand, froyo is really good with resource management and there is no need to constantly kill processes or apps, its best to just leave them unless your streak is slow like a snail

Lose multi touch!
How?
@rptw
So, It wouldnt really matter if there are apps running in the BG, and they start by themselves too!?
care,
Sony.
well in terms of the laws of nature (in most cases) stuff doesnt happen spontaneously so i think its safe to assume that your app that "started by themselves" were probably opened somehow either by you directly or indirectly by something else. if, however, you have a large number of apps that have started that you dont recall opening, maybe something is wrong with your software and you shouldnt try to cover the problem with a task killer.
So, what next!?

So, Now, can you or other guys here please suggest how to go to the "root" of this problem!?
Ok.
Look, these apps are open right now!
Voice Search
Email
Messaging
Maps
Astro
Assistant free
I use the Adv Task Killer free.
(It says 7 apps killed and 180 MB free)
I open Adv task killer after 5 seconds.
and these apps are running!
Email
astro
Voice Search
Assistant Free
and I am sure, If I wait for some more time, the other apps will join in too!
(Now it says, 3 Apps killed, 171 MB free!!)
care,
Sony.
have you tried using the stock app manager and killing the apps there? i just checked my phone and i have the same apps under the running tab using the stock manager, i think email and messaging are always running since you have push features on them, in terms of the others im not sure. whats so bad about email and messaging running anyways? im sure you use them often enough to not want to have to open and close them right?
Hey, you posted the same question over at Pocketables forum.
As stated earlier, 2.2 is really good at managing back ground tasks.
I can tell you if you use a task killer and you have a problem with an APP, which currently you do not, the programmer for the app probably will not help you till you remove the APP killer program.
What you might try to do is run though your menus and see what you have selected to run, such as locations and sync services and disable what you can. Also if you do not want some thing running, you may want to just uninstall it. I do understand that you want some programs but you only want them to run when you ask, not sure how to tell you to handle that.
But, are you seeing any difference when you have the background tasks disabled. Try to find the APK for the programs and rename them just to see if you have any issues.

Automatic /system/app market updates: Gingerbread

I have a lot of my daily and weekly apps loaded in /system/app. I do this to save space in the data folder for those apps and games that are ridiculous in size. I don't like to use the SD card anymore (I flash a lot). Usually I just make an update.zip or two and flash it with the ROM.
I don't remember Froyo doing this but the GB market automatically updates apps. I struggled with privacy settings as I've read through the forums to get it to stop with no success. Eventually I realized it did work but only for data apps.
My question is; Does anyone know how to disable automatic market updates for SYSTEM apps? If not, then any ideas on where to look? I've spent a couple days searching but only found disabling auto updates on DATA apps, no leads on the system ones.

EDIT: Sorry I posted too early on my phone. I meant to put this in the Q&A Section. Please feel free to move.

Are you sure that Automatic Updates wasn't enabled for the apps before you moved them to system/app?
Go through your system apps and make a list of them. Go through the market searching for each app and make sure "Automatically Update" is not checked.
Originally I may not have, but in my process of trying to stop it I have done the above. At first I just pulled my apks and loaded them in an update zip. Once I flashed GSB 1.7 I had lots of random issues. Long story short I flashed 1.7 over a dozen times in a day trying to narrow the problem (in the end it turned out to be my third of three update.zips which did the bulk of the apps). In doing so I had updated all my apps and went through every single one in the market and unchecked auto update (that's when I figured out that the privacy settings does work but just on the /data/apps). I used Titanium Backup to integrate all the system updates into the ROM. I made a quick batch to pull all of my apps from /system/app and /data/app and once I reflashed without my broken update.zip used my batch again to push all the apps (just my actual apps, not everything in /system/app folder) to their respectable locations (which now 1.7 runs awesome BTW). Then I ran the market just to catch any changes (I bought a new one after I did the pull) and there were about 6 other updated apps and 2 that I never update now because I don't like the newer versions. They all started updating automatically again.
I don't know if there is something I'm just missing or maybe something with the vender.apk. The Google apps I didn't push, I just left that to the gapps update.zip. Maybe I need to pull/push the current version of vender.apk before I reflash as well?

how do i uninstall applications?

like widgets? such as "apmobiles", seems to be a newspaper sort of thing i will never read. i also can't uninstall social/music/gaming/book hubs? i'm in the setting/applications/manage applications bit.
i want to basically delete a LOT of apps then only install what I need? i'm new to smartphones, moved from a nokia keypad phone. so the galaxy s2 was a massive jump for me.
Have a search for titanium backup and root. You'll need to root your phone 1st before you can 'freeze' but not remove apps.
The phone is brand new and it will take a while before custom roms that let you remove apps are available.
If I were you I'd wait before rooting as it is still a bit complicated and simpler methods will come along soon, I'm sure. I'd use the time to read the guides and get familiar with the phone.
Bear in mind that rooting/custom roms will lose you your warranty. Also, I'm not too worried about app removal as the phone has plenty of memory for my needs. Just remove the apps you don't want from the home screen and put on the ones that you do.
Edit: just wanted to clarify that I was referring to removing pre - installed apps.

Thanks for that, it's that I also noticed that there are services running in the background from applications that I'm not using, like I have the apmobile service running and also a social hub service running even neither is open. And I at least want to remove app shortcuts from the menu.
You'll need to root and freeze to remove the shortcut from the app drawer. I really wouldn't do that until you've read up and are confident though.
There are other threads about the social hub, have a search. I think you'll need to reset the phone and then not add any accounts if you want to stop it from being active.

To add-up about removing the widgets (probably you've found it already though), you only need to hold down the widget and slide it down to an area says remove
this phone comes with a built in task manager and a widget that shows you active tasks, i use the widget on my phone's desktop to close apps as needed ( i know the phone can handle it but its just my own thing lol ) and from there, there's a tab that lets you uninstall apps as well.
ofcourse you wont be able to uninstall those that came with the phone just yet.
I rooted mine which was dead easy and was my first time so you'll be fine. Download AntTek app manager from the market its free and lets you freeze, delete and backup any apps and widgets you want. You will no longer have any of those crap apps working in the background draining your battery. Hope this helps.
Edit: Oh yeah the built in task manager doesn't show system apps working in the background or at least not all so well worth freezing or removing them.

[HELP] Trying to find a solution to apps running in background. Any way to stop them?

First of all, I KNOW THIS HAS BEEN BROUGHT UP BILLIONS OF TIMES, SO BEFORE YOU REPLY WITH "Search the forums" READ THIS.
I have been looking for WEEKS trying to find an answer to this, and no answer given on any forums are what I am looking for.
I have an android phone (sidekick 4g) and there are apps that run in the background when not necessary. Now I know some stuff need to be aways running for the phone to function. But I also know that apps like Facebook, Market, Gmail, T-mobile's Media Store, MyYearBook, Maps, Aptoide, etc don't. When I force close them, they just start up a few seconds later. I've tried task killers and got the same result. I've read the "Why you shouldn't use a task killer" articles but everyone keeps saying different things about it so I'm confused.
Like many others, I want my battery to last at least half way through the day. The above mentioned apps (and some others) DRAIN THE BATTERY WHEN RUNNING IN THE BACKGROUND WHEN I DON'T WANT THEM TO.
Please does anyone know of a way to fix this?
My phone is rooted, if that matters.
Also, "freezing" the apps don't help cause then I can't use them when I actually want to.
Thank you very much in advance anyone who can help me out!

Applications running, doesn't mean cpu cycles are being used. Sitting in memory is no different then a song sitting on your sdcard. Your issue with the battery has to do with processes using cpu cycles. If you have applications that update, force updates manually.
Just having apps in memory isn't your issue.
Use the features built into the os, find out what apps are causing the problem. Look at the settings. If you have looked at your settings, then you have one of three choices. Open bugreports with the application developers, don't install the apps causing problems, or upgrade your phone.

Thank you that makes sense.
I would think those apps would use battery because it pushes notifications for the app (like new messages and stuff). Does that not use battery?

It does use battery because to process the notification it needs to use the cpu. If you force applications to update manually. Your batter would be better. Check into battery saving tuts. All that information has already been discussed plenty. Won't change in this scenario either.
The more apps you have updating information the more data and notifications are being processed.

Also, I have another problem, if you know anything about this kinda stuff. The Facebook app icon just (like 10 minutes ago) disappeared from my home screen, and it's not in the app drawer either. I uninstalled and reinstalled and still having the problem. I can only open it by manually searching "facebook" in the google search widget and that's when it gives me the option to open the app. It's really bizzare and I have no idea what's going on.

Sounds like a issue with the rom or launcher. Try installing another launcher from the market and see if the application is installed. If its there with another launcher then its your stock launcher, if its not then its the rom.
