[Q] may have a possible virus - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I rooted installed clockwork and then began the process of installing a team whiskey rom. when i noticed that i no longer had access to the app market. I have some sort of purgatory market that shows test apps and none of them seem to work.
So I installed Odin and was going to unroot and flash back to Stock Vibrant rom but the phone isnt syncing. so I installed Kies still nothing.
Then it was suggested that I use a Dial code started with *2.......*.... something. which wiped all my apps and gave me a stock phone with no terminal access.
So I dl terminal access apk's (tried two) they install but wont open.
I can still make calls and browse the net and whatnot but wheres the fun in that. About at my whitts end here fellas. I think I may have a virus. how do I fix it

Have you tried going to:
Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications -> The "All" tab -> select "Market" -> press "Clear Data" (you might have to force stop it before this step)

I tried a bunch of things in the settings... manage applications you suggested but I don't have a tab feature you mention.

In manage applications along the top it should say:
"Third Party"
"Running"
"All" <- select this one
Then scroll down to "Market", click it and clear the data.

I read about this some where and I'm sorry but I don't have the link. But this person was having close, if not exactly, the same problem and found it was due to some change in the IEMI code. This guy said he had backed his up so it was easy to fix. But the point is that your IEMI code is part of what is used to determine what should be shown to you in the market, at least that is my understanding, so you should verify that yours is correct. I hope this helps. If not then sorry I made you waste your time, but good luck.

earlier this morning i tried opening all the stock programs and when i got to sim3 i got this message "For security, your phone is set to block installation of applications not sourced in android market".
I tried the *#06# to compare the imei code with what is printed on the phone and they dont match.
So now I have a clearer idea of what Im up against here anyone have any ideas on how to fix it?

no, i did not. if you mean titanium back up then yes. i followed the instructions on briefmobile..
edit: how would that effect networks or whatever it did..?
wooooow.. xD i just pluged my phone into my computer while having motorola software update started and i have full bars now.. this is very weird.
I dont know if i should be happy or worried LOL
I think I'm having a similar issue. The network is working after unlocking but I can't add my Google account, so I'm locked out of the Android Market and Gmail etc..
I am getting the message "Can't establish reliable connection" when I try to add my Google account to the phone.
I have read that the only solution to this is to do a hard reset. If I have unlocked am I safe to do a hard reset?
My other thought was to re-root and restore the Titanium Backup I took before unlocking. Maybe the system settings I saved would fix it? However when I go reboot to Fastboot and try ADB shell it no longer finds my device (USB debugging is enabled and my drivers must be up to date if I rooted three days ago).
If the easiest thing to do is just hard reset I will do that I just need to know whether it is safe after unlocking. I feel like unlocking may have interfered with whatever the phone uses to communicate with servers but I have no clue if that is possible.
Edit: I was able to root again, had not realized ADB will not work from the fastboot screen. fastboot devices showed my phone. I got rooted, side loaded Titanium Backup and BusyBox. Now I am restoring my apps and settings, I will report back if the problem with signing into Google is resolved.

Titanium Backup Restore is done now but I am not out of the water yet. I have all of my applications back and in settings under Accounts I have all of my accounts listed now, but when I launch Android Market or Gmail both applications crash. I tried to add another Gmail account to the phone and when I click Next to begin logging in, I immediately get the "Can't establish a reliable data connection to the server" screen, along with an error dialog saying Gmail has stopped unexpectedly.
I can't tell if this means I got further or am really in the same spot as before
So... can anyone answer the question of whether I am safe to do a hard reset after unlocking and rooting?

The problem I run into when using Titanium Backup, is that it restores the app and the data associated with the app, and the data caused force closes for the market (Play in my case) and other apps. Try clearing the cache for them. (From the home screen > Menu > Manage Applications > "App" > Clear Data)

I've honestly never tried it, but hard-reset appears to be the equivalent to wiping cache (and dalvik) and re-flashing. You might try wiping your cache and dalvik cache and flashing the ROM again. Trying a "factory" restore after modifying the factory data on your phone doesn't seem like it would work.

I did "Clear Data" for Gmail and Market (that is what it is called in my applications list, but the icon says Play).
Gmail is working again! The Market/Play app still gets to a white screen and says "Loading" with the whirly icon then goes away without any information. I see another item in the application list called Google Play Services, should I clear that data as well?

You shouldn't have to. If you're seeing a long loading screen, be patient. If it shows market in one spot and Google Play in another, it's probably trying to update.

I decided to try side-loading the Google Play Store since the market is no longer used. I got the apk from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1836057.
Now it loads but tells me Authentication is Required. Please sign in. I checked the accounts in the menu and my google account is selected, so I'm not sure what the problem is since Gmail is fine with the account now.

Where did you start in all this? Were you on a custom ROM and are now trying to get back to stock? Are you on stock and trying to unlock the bootloader or root? The direction you're going will help determine what you may or may not want to try next.

I am getting help from you in two separate posts it looks like so I will just consolidate to this thread, I apologize for posting all over the place just hoping to knock this out before the weekend is over.
I started with the official Gingerbread ROM from Motorola. I rooted, then unlocked, then rooted again.
My goal is to end up on an ICS ROM but I would like to get a good back up of the stock ROM first, so I want to knock this problem out, back it up, then flash to a custom ROM. You suggested going ahead and flashing the custom rom, I am just worried about making the problem worse by doing that.
The only problem I am noticing is that I cannot get into the Play Store, and I still get the Can't Establish Reliable connection message when trying to add a Google account. However, Gmail is working now but I can't add another account. I have connected to Wifi and I am still having the problem while connected.

If you side-loaded Google Play, try clearing any cache (App Data) for it as well. I don't know why your market/play is acting up if all you did was root > unlock > root. Assuming you have flashed CWM Recovery, you may end up having to get Google Apps (usually called gapps) and installing them as a zip to correct this. If so, here are the steps:
Get them from here or browse them all http://goo-inside.me/gapps/ and get the ones you want.
Load them onto the root directory of the phone's SD Card (not the internal memory).
Reboot into Recovery
Choose the option "Install Zip from SD Card" using the volume keys and the lock button
Scroll down to gapps-gb-tegra-20110118-signed.zip (or whichever one you got if you browsed them) and hit the lock button
Scroll down to whichever one says "Yes" in the midst of all the "No"s (I think that's how they're listed)
Reboot when the install is finished. It shouldn't take more than a minute or two.

I'm going to try the Gapps install, but I am having an issue flashing CWM apparently. I follow the instructions here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1204500 but I am still not seeing Clockwork Mod Recovery. When I reboot, hold volume down, go to Android Recovery and press up, I still see the Android/Triangle/Exclamation point icon. Press volume down and up and see a blue menu with three or 4 options but none are Install from SD, so I am guessing I'm not successfully flashing CWM.
Edit: I did not delete the system/etc/install-recovery.sh file before flashing CWM. I am trying to do that then flash again, but ES File Explorer will not let me delete the file. My super user may need to be updated, but since I can't connect to the store it won't do it on its own.
I resolved the the issue with CWM thanks to Zestar in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1302423&page=16
I just have to reflash every time until I decide to go for the custom rom. I installed GAPPS from CWM Recovery but I am still having the same issue with being told i need to authenticate my account.
I got a ROM backup while in CWM as well so I think at this point I will just flash a custom rom and see where that gets me. Since I got a copy of the rom I should be able to return to this point in time anyways (could be wrong though )
Thanks for your help, I will report back once I have flashed to a new ROM and see what happens.
I didn't get this done before the weekend was up but got time tonight and flashed to the TopSmarts GingerBread ROM (it is really cool to me, a first time custom rom-er). I was able to get set up on e-mail (don't have a Gmail app loaded yet) but Play Store - which I had to side load - is crashing when I try to add an account still.
I flashed the Gapps from above after flashing the new ROM but none of them showed up when the phone booted into the rom for the first time. Do I need to do something other than install from CWM?
Edit: I flashed the Gapps from TopSmarts and rebooted and was able to get Play Store running. It had a minor hiccup and repeated the sign in process a few times but now it is updating my apps. I am happy with the world again, thank you for your help.

Glad you got it working. I've never seen the TopSmarts ROM as I am also very new to the custom ROM world. I flashed CyanogenMod 7 Nightly (I didn't know Nightly versions were beta until after I flashed it), and I love it! It took me a couple of tries to get the gapps working too, but once they worked, I haven't really had a problem since.

'Google Talk authentication failed' error

I just got my Atrix yesterday, I seem to have the issue where it wont successfully log in to google talk which also means that I cant download apps. I've tried making a new account which also failed to work. Are there any ideas out there for how I could fix it?
Can anybody help me?
I had the same problem and figured out that it was Droid Wall keeping Gtalk from connecting. Make sure Talk can access the network freely.

After cloning a samsung gio s5660 through a CWM backup I started experiencing the same issue. Heres What REALLY happens.
Google authenticates you in their services trought unique "keys" which are automatically generated upon system installation / factory reset, so if you clone your device or install a rom which has these "keys" pre-installed, obviously, your rom will only autheticate you in google servers if your phone is the only one using the service at that given time... Upon failure, your phone assumes to be the one who's wrong, and google servers won't autheticate you until you either tell your phone he is not wrong (by deleting the data from play store, which resets its status and errors) or you change the "keys". SO, what can we learn from this? deleting the play store data IS a temporary solution, and won't solve a thing. Let's delete the duplicated keys shall we?
Navigate with your favourite folder explorer on your android (I use X-plore, you can tell me anything, there's nothing better) to the following directory:
- "(root)/data/data/com.google.android.gsf"
Now you have two real options, either you may delete the all folder, which was the perfect solution for me, since my rom is prepared to re-create it upon phone restart and new keys will be generated, OR, you might want to just delete the contents of app_sslcache inside com.google.android.gsf whish are THE KEYS I HAVE BEEN TALKING ABOUT THIS ALL TIME, YEEEIHHHH and reboot your phone...
Needless to say, take a nandroid backup before you do any of this...
Thank me later
For those who remember me from symbian s60v3 phones, yes, it is me, I'm back, and I've moved to the droid world, it's much better indeed
Let me just say, I have no idea why this thread was moved or resurrected. Whoever did so was about a year and a half too late. Please close/delete this thread.

Have the exact same issue... Coby Kyros 7033 with no Google Play... Installed the latest and greatest download of Google Play successfully, but it just opens and then closes immediately.
What's the easiest way to get Google Play on a Coby Kyros 7033?
Google Play onto Kyros 7033
I purchased one of these tablets to play around with, and cannot install Google Play onto it either.
It will load, then it closes instantly!!
Any suggestions would be more than welcome!!
If I have posted this in the wrong area, please forgive me!!
Thank you!!
Google Play, Coby Kyros 7033 - No Root Needed
You can actually get the Android Market (precursor to the more current Play Store) on this device fairly quickly and without root. I just did this process on a friend's tablet today. He purchased it for his son for Christmas on Cyber-Monday.
The main problem, I think, is that many people are trying to install the latest Google Play APK file and it's just not supported on this device. You can get around this by installing the older Android Market.
Okay, before we begin... I'm going to assume you have everything stock and are using the stock browser for downloading the files attached to this message.
Additionally, I'm going to assume you have already created a Google GMail account and know your username and password. (You will need this to access the store later during setup, so if you don't have one yet... head over to Google and set one up.)
Finally, I'm going to assume you've first read this ENTIRE post before attempting anything.
DISCLAIMER: I am not responsible if this results in a bricked device. It shouldn't, however, because we are not modifying any essential items and we are not ROOT'ing the device. This is perfectly above-board.
---- START ----
1.) Download the files attached to this message and save them on your tablet. NOTE: This installs an older version of the Android Market, not the current Google Play store... but it still works.
Be aware, that the selection of apps is limited, but you can still work with it. For example, it does not have the original Angry Birds app. That's available in GetJar or Amazon Appstore however.
2.) Open the App list (by tapping the box made of little squares, mine was in the upper right hand corner of the tablet)
3.) Open ES File Explorer (or whatever you are using for a file manager)
4.) Open the folder where the .apk files are... if you are using the stock browser, the files will be in the "downloads" folder
5.) Run them in the following (very specific) order
**** IMPORTANT NOTE: Once you install the last file (com.android.vending) and click "Done", it will automatically launch the Market setup. DO NOT CONTINUE THE SETUP at this point!!! It will mess up the whole process. ****
a.) OneTimeInitializer.apk --> Click Done
b.) SetupWizard.apk --> Click Done
c.) GoogleServicesFramework-signed.apk --> Click Done
d.) com.android.vending.3.3.12.apk --> Click Done
**** Again, at this point... the Market setup will begin. Do not enter anything ****
6.) Press and hold the Power button to turn the tablet off. Yes, I know you just interrupted the setup process... but this step is needed so that all the apk's you just installed have been processed properly BEFORE running the setup sequence.
7.) Once you are sure it's completely off... Turn it back on
9.) After the initial Coby Kyros screen, you will see a menu with two options BEFORE it lands at the desktop...
*** Check the "Use this as default" box on the very bottom (it's very small).
*** Then select the option on top ("Launcher"). You do NOT want to run the "Setup Wizard".
10.) Make sure you are connected to an active Wi-Fi connection (open your browser and navigate to this forum to ensure it's working)
11.) Open the Apps list (by tapping the box made of little squares, again mine was in the upper right hand corner of the tablet)
12.) Tap on the "Android Market" icon in this list. It will be the default, ugly android APK icon.
13.) Select the option that you already have a GMail account
14.) Enter your GMail username and password... and continue
15.) In a few seconds, you should be able to access the Market.
If you want to redeem Google Play gift cards with this version of the Market/Play store... go here (http://play.google.com/redeem)
-------- END ---------
I hope this works for you as quickly as it worked for us. It only took about 15 minutes and my friend was able to purchase Minecraft Pocket Edition for his son to play on this device. We ran the game and verified it was working smoothly.
Cheers!!!
Followed every step... gets to where I can sign in or create a new google account. Log in with my current google account... get the status bar that says: Your Phone needs to communicate with Google Servers to set up your account... may take 5 min....
Fails every time... "Cannot establish a reliable data connection to the server" And it's not because I'm not on the internet, cause I'm sitting at usatoday.com to verify internet connectivity in the browser.

I don't have this tablet in front of me... I just helped my friend set it up.
That being said, this is a common problem for Android phones.
Here are a few things to try...
1. Try going to YouTube through the app and login with your gmail account.
2. Go to GMail app and add your account
3. Sign into Gmail account with your username and password
4. Go back through the login process
Alternately,
1. Go to settings, applications, manage applications, tap Google apps
2. Tap clear data, then okay
3. Try again.

Wow, that will take a little research. My first thought is to do a factory reset and start over.
I'll see what I can dig up.

You can try going to Google Play from a computer browser and logging in, picking a free app, and try sending it to your tablet from there. It should automatically download and install. That doesn't give you a working market you can browse on your tablet though.
From what I can find, it sounds like the market app version is not correct or is corrupted.
Please verify that you used the one included in my post above.
If so, try the following....
1. Settings -> Applications -> Market -> Force Stop, Clear Cache
2. Restart tablet and try Market
If still not working...
1. Settings -> Applications -> Market -> Force Stop, Clear Cache, Clear Data
2. Restart tablet and try Market... you'll probably have to login again
If still not working, factory reset the tablet and refer back to my original post. Make sure you don't try to login after install until you've reset the tablet. (Follow the steps exactly).
If still doesn't work, I'm stumped and I'm sorry. I hope one of these works.

No problem. I'm glad you got it working finally.
For some reason, the Coby Kyros tablets do not work well with Google Play.
They do work with the old Android Market (the apk for which, if anyone else is reading this thread, is a download in my first post).
Don't worry though, you'll still see all the "compatible" apps.
Between the Android Market and GetJar, you should be able to get most apps.
Best wishes.

Re-download the files... Its most likely a corrupted download.
After after that... You are stuck....
You can wipe your device to factory stock and try again before you do anything to the tablet.
Best wishes

I've been scouring the references on this and the only thing I can suggest is trying this (different) framework package (see attachment). It's worked for a few other tablets, but I have no idea if it will work for you.
Beyond that, I'm completely stumped so I truly hope it works. I'm sorry I can't be of much help as I do not have the tablet to try this out (I was just helping a friend with his son's tablet and the original files worked flawlessly for us).
P.S. Did you do a complete factory reset on the device and attempt the process a second time? It may help if something got mis-installed during the original attempt.
From my research you start with a completely powered down tablet...
1. Turn on the tablet by pressing and holding the Power Button, Volume Down (-) and the Back Button
2. After a couple seconds you should see the android logo with instructions on formatting the tablet
(*). If that doesn't work, try pressing and releasing the power button, then pressing and holding the three buttons as soon as you see the Coby logo
Best regards!

Root coby mid 7033
Hi! I've got a challenge for you guys! It happens that I own a coby kyros mid7033-4 and I've tried so hard to root it. I have tried with superoneclick, bin4ry, unlock root (which actually says that supports my tablet but it tells me that it failed to shell root), and android root. This last one, android root, worked, but not properly. Some programs tell me my device is rooted but root check tells: Sorry! This device does not have a proper root access. Help me! I'm trying to root so that I can install google now on ics.

I'm sorry to hear that. Maybe you'll run across a solution. In the meantime, you can install the Amazon Appstore which has most of the same apps as the Google Play market. That was our back-up plan for my friend's tablet. He was insistent on getting Minecraft on it for his son.
Best of luck.

I'm completely stumped on rooting this tablet. I've seen many threads on it, but no one has achieved full root on it that I'm aware of. If you find an exploit, please be sure to post it!
Best of luck to you too!
This worked for me! Thanks. I did have to clear the data and then reset before it would communicate with google servers

Haven't been around for awhile, but thought I'd say thanks for the extra information.
Glad it worked for you.

[Q] "ussd code running"

I have a problem on my Galaxy S3, running android 4.1.1 on Vodafone network in the UK. It is not rooted.
I want to make sure the phone is unlocked before buying a sim card for use in France
Using the stock dialer, "*#7465625#" gives me "ussd code running" followed by "Unknown command".
Looking around elsewhere, others have blamed it on Mobile Tracker, which as far as I can see, I don't have. The only solution I have seen is a factory reset, which is a scary prospect for me, not having any idea what that entails. And then reinstalling apps one by one until the culprit is found. I have also seen comments about ussd security issues. I am slowly heading out of my depth here (I know my way round windows quite well, but phones are unknown territory for me,).
I am hoping some clever souls on this forum might be able to help. Is this a known, and solved, problem? Or is a factory reset my best bet?
If I have to reset, I know where the reset is in the menu system - on the same page as a checked box saying backup. So...does does the back up happen automatically or when I press reset or have I got it completely wrong? If not, which files do I need to save away from the phone? What happens to things like contacts I can remove the external SD card, so that won't be an issue. How do I reinstall the apps, particularly the ones I have already paid for?
I have spent most of the afternoon tried to get a handle on this and my head is spinning now.
Any help at all, would be very warmly received.
Polly
1st solution : root your phone, very easy procedure then you can flash the same stock ROM from sammobile.com to become unrooted again without wiping/resetting your phone.
2nd solution: download APPSAVER from market for free, then you can save all the applications you have downloaded but not the DATA (for example you can save the game itself but not the progress you have achieved)
as for the contacts, go to the contacts folder - menu import/export - export to usb storage and voila all your contacts will be written in a single file that you can import after you reset your phone
as for SMS, you can download "SMS Backup & Restore" from market for free to backup then restore your SMSs
after you perform the above, go to Settings - Back up and reset - Factory data reset and your phone will be back as you received it.
On the other hand if the phone is locked you can always unlock it using Voodoo S3 on the Play Store, it can sim-unlock your device if you're rooted of course.
Great reply, thank you!
Rooting...a bit loth to do that while still under guarantee and at my level of experience. One day I will get hold of an old phone and try it with that first.
Appsaver - what a brilliant app, thank you again. If it is one particular app that is the problem (and that is the sense that I get from elsewhere), then I can use this to back up my apps, uninstall them all, check for the ussd error. If it has disappeared, then reinstall apps one at a time until the error reappears. If it hasn't disappeared, then I can go the reset route, after backing up contacts and SMS.
Thank you so much for your help.

Ah. The more I try to read up on this, it feels the more lost I get.
How do I check whether the phone is unlocked...borrow someone's micro sim card?

First I would recommend making sure you have a network connection either through Wifi or cellular data. If that doesn't solve the problem going into application manager and then find the Market and clear the applications cache and data. Another possible fix would be running the fix permissions utility in recovery.
well i do got connection from a wifi or cellular data, but the problem persist when i try to use a market, when i'm downloading programs over market, than the message pops out saying to check the network connection, can you explain to me how do i clear the applications data from market, and how do i run the FIX PERMISSIONS..my phone is rooted.

To clear the cache and data for the Market open settings then navigate to application manager then select the all tab find the Market then select it you should then see the option to clear data and cache. For fix permissions you can boot into recovery go under the advanced section then select the the fix permissions option.

For backing up all your apps including system apps I would recommend taking a look at Titanium Backup. Your contacts can automatically be backed up through your Google account and can then easily be restored by signing into your Google account when setting up your ROM.

You definitely do not want to restore your system apps unless you know with certainty what you're doing. Many from stock will not function properly on Cyanogen and will cause looping Force Closes and may cause issues to the point that you have to do a Data Reset.
You should back up your contacts through another app or as an xml file and restore that way.

The Universal Inbox is a part of Motorola Blur and would not be compatible with CM 7 without heavy porting. You would have to use a Motorola Blur based ROM for the Universal Inbox apk.

yesterday i realize something strange going on with my droid 2..i was not being able to connect to my wifi. i went to a settings of the phone, i wrote down my mac address of the droid, than i enter to my router login page, and what i saw is everytime when i reboot my phone, that my phone is getting new mac address, even if i got cm7 installed in the phone.does that happening to all of you, or its just happening to me, than i went to a recovery and fix the permission, so its still mac address changed,so everytime when i want to connect to wifi i would need to enter my mac address,,what do i need to do to keep just one mac address of the phone like my other deivces..

I would recommend taking a look at this fix for the MAC address issue your having it's for the Droid Pro but should work for your Droid 2 as well.
