[Q] About the VZW 3g hotspot app on superclean 2.8 voodoo with dummy kernel - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Im currently on superclean 2.8 voodoo eb16 with the dummy kernel. I had clicked on the vzw 3g mobile hotsoit app just seeing what it does and it said I could turn it on and it worked... so now does that mean I'm going to be charged for it? Cuz I turned it off right after realizing it worked. As I was unsure that it would actually let me do it since you have to sign up for the tethering plan separately through vzw website. Though I guest what I'm asking is since the app let me turn it on does that mean that it automatically signed me up for the tethering plan? Ima call Verizon Wireless tomorrow to see about it since it wasn't that I wanted to sign on. And since the Verizon framework was removed as far as I know from Adrynalynes change log notes I figured the app wouldn't work, and since it did-does that mean that I didn't get charged and will not get charged due to the dummy kernel module? :-/.

You shouldn't be charged for just turning the feature on with your phone. If you had connected a computer to it and tried to browse the web, a page would have come up asking you to sign up for the service. As long as you don't have it activated on your Verizon account, no real data was used, and you shouldn't be charged.
All of the Froyo kernels from Samsung look like they have something in them from Verizon that would find out if we are using tethering and circumventing their charges. The dummy tether module in the latest kernels, from what I've read, should help to prevent Verizon from finding out if we use other wireless tether apps/methods. It shouldn't have any impact on Verizon's Mobile Hotspot app.

Thanks a lot. Do you know if the new superclean 2.9 is compatible with the eb16 kernel with the dummy module from superclean 2.8?

It should be. Per the notes on the superclean thread, the reason ardynalyne changed to the EB01 kernel is because of stability issues with the EB16 kernel.
"--Moved backed to tried and true eb01 kernels. Sorry tetherers, the modded eb16 kernels were just way too unstable."
I know I've seen posts where people are having problems with mobile data dropping out frequently. If you are willing to put up with any issues that arise from using the EB16 kernel, go for it, it should still work fine with superclean 2.9.

Wifi Calling. Am I stuck on the same Rom forever?

Long Story short I would have to walk down the block to use my phone at work. Wifi calling is a necessity. When I got my phone it was already flashed to a ROM that to this day I have no clue what it is. I know it is some version of JK6. Anyways Wifi calling is decently stable though I am having some minor issues with wifi connection and my battery is awful. If I flash a new modem would this interfere with the wifi calling's stability?
And having that in mind is there a list of what ROMS include wifi calling? (or can it be installed on any ROM, because I would really like to try Axura or Nero) but I can not go without it on my phone.
Thanks!

I'm sure it can work with axura, I've tried it, not sure about nero, but it should work.
The devs removed wifi calling from roms because its a HUGE battery hog, but I'm sure you can find a .apk on xda, or 4 shared.
I'm running Nero V3 and Wificalling works fine. It even seems to work better then my old JK2 based ROM. I'm using the .apk linked from the slightly better gingerbread theme found here in the vibrant themes section.
Flash a new rom and if the rom does not have the .apk just d/load it... no issues at all with the new roms.
Thanks guys I wasnt sure if the program was ROM Specific or required certain files/settings blah blah blah. But if it should work with any newer Rom I guess I should just get over this fear of flashing and pull the trigger. monkey1911 Ill give that a search right now so at least I can put it in my arsenal. Ill let y'all know my results. Thanks for the help!
I finally took the leap tonight and flashed nero 4.1 (maybe ill do 5 eventually but I like this for my first flash.)
I installed wifi calling and it works great. Had a struggle restoring my contacts because what's on google contacts is not correct and it wants to override what I restored using titanium which is correct so I had to shut it off and re restore the contacts after.
Only issue I am having is my camera advises me the firmware is not current and says continue yes or no. Any fix for this? Thanks for the help guys I am finally glad I got the audacity to flash

Phone not ringing on Froyo

Several users have reported issues with the phone not ringing on the Fascinates. Can anyone who is experiencing this please post here with your ROM, radio and kernel? Maybe we can figure out a pattern.
I've had this issue once on I believe the DL09 radio and the EC10 voodoo stock kernel; I can't remember which Rom but i think it was a Superclean 2.9.x version.
Thanks.

Make sure you have a ringtone set. I used the .nomedia file in /system/media and my ringtone went to silent and didn't return after I got rid of the .nomedia file. I had to go back in and reset all of my notification sounds and my ringtone.

I am pretty sure I didn't have that and did have a ringtone set. I verified in my /system/media folder that .nomedia is not there.
This thread is mainly to see who else is having problems. I would think though if the ringtone wasn't set it would still show a missed call; from what I have seen no missed call message shows up.

I had same issue on EB01 radio along with data drop. Been using the DL09 radio for about 3 weeks and has not happened since. After radio flash be sure to do the *228 1 and *228 2.
good day.
I'm having the same issue but haven't figured out why.
EB01 radio
Blackhole v4.3
Stock EC10 kernel nonvoodoo
Superdark theme v3
I've tried to *228 but neither option 1 or 2 work for some reason. I get FC's everytime I try. I've never had these problems with any other setup.
I'm starting to think it's the EC10 kernels. Yesterday I wiped and odined my phone and OTAed to EA28, loaded SC 2.9.1 w/ the EC10 voodoo kernel. Today my data signal in my house would go from 2 bars instantly all the way to 0 bars every time I would use it no matter where I was. I flashed the EB16 voodoo kernel and now my data signal was back up to steady 2 bars and hardly dropped any lower in the same locations.

Not the kernel...it's the modem. Thread about three weeks ago discussing the same thing.

This is what I was thinking too. The EB01 radio seems to be the common denominator. Now if I can just find an EA28 odin file....

I'm on an EC10 kernel with the EB01 modem and don't have any problems receiving phone calls.
It's only happened to me once when someone called me 4 times in a row and my phone never rang. I've recieved plenty of calls and text messages since then.
Can you *228? Everytime I try, I just get a Programming Unsuccessful message and my dialer FC's.
EDIT: Just tried *228 option 2 again and the PRL update was successful. THEN once that was over, the dialer FC'd. Weird....

Same here...but every now and then it happens to me and I use hybrid prls on another network still utilizing vzw modems...and i've never ran into any issues till after eb01. I've tested multiple times and confirmed on my phone it is eb01.

Maybe that is the difference? I get the hybrid VZW PRL pushed to my phone after I complained a bunch of times about poor service. Didn't really do anything to fix the problem, but it made the CS rep I was talking to feel better.

Yeah...they do whatever they can to get you off the phone for dials lol...personally I think this issue may already be known by big red and could possibly be a hold up for the official froyo release for the fascinate. I'm not going to say how I tested my theory but I can confirm that there were several times my eb01 phone would play dumb while...nevermind you get the gist

Verizon's hybrid PRL will re-prioritize the Alltel towers they picked up when they acquired Alltel a few years ago. I guess by default, it won't connect to them, but if you have service issues, they'll push the hybrid to you to see if it solves the problem.

So far no one has any EA28 Odin files. I started a thread but no one has posted any. I got mine by odining an older stock rom then OTAing to EA28.

I am in the same boat - same combo, except SFC 2.9.2 and Endert Special UV Kernel (EC10)
I have missed a few calls with no ring - but every time I test it myself it rings perfectly. It is not often, but it does happen from time to time with my phone.
I was reading about it, seems perhaps the EA28 modem may correct it (even though it seems to be very similar to EB01[from what I read, not what I understand or know), but there does not seem to be an odin file around for that modem.
I was thinking of making the time investment to flash to stock, take the OTA update and then rebuild to my current spec.
A few missed calls and yesterday my accelerometer completely quit, so this seems to be the best for me at the moment - as I learned from reading posts by scarfman

Unmonitored Tether? - SC2.9/JT Kernel

I'm on SC2.9 with one of JT's Froyo kernels, both are a few months old now and I was wondering if I used the Wifi Tether app, would VZW be able to monitor? I recall at the time, no-one was certain if the JT's kernels with integrated Voodoo color/sound/lagfix had the dummy tether module or not.
I just picked up a Asus Transformer and wanted to take it on the road this weekend and wanted to know if I could tether to my Fascinate.

Verizon blocking tethering from rooted phones?

http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/verizon_blocks_hotspot_tethering_for_jailbroken_de.php
Found that article. Is it true?
Anyone out there confirm they are blocked?
Still works for me on CM7.
i just used barnacle on miui and it worked flawlessly
Interesting. I wonder if it only blocks those using roms that are still based on Samsung's code.
Above examples use pure GB code and nothing from Samsung/Verizon.

I tethered from my device (ED05 installed) a few hours ago and it worked fine. However I was using a custom ED05 kernel, they might only be blocking it on Samsung's stock kernels.
There has always been tethering monitoring in the stock kernel. They might just now be doing something about it officially, but how many people are still running the factory software on here?
I think they attempt to block the tethering apps from the market and put things in the kernel

I wish it said what program she was using, along with how much data she was using.
Maybe it's just Verizon scare tactics. How is changing the ROM on the phone any different than erasing Windows 7 and installing Ubuntu on my computer. I think people will read that and think twice about "jailbreaking" their phones. I'd be surprised to see if anything changes on our phones though.
blocked
nope. no scare tactics here. im blocked. was using WIFI Tether... after 4 hours of reading up on this forum to tether my droid x2 to my Asus Prime, I finally got it working... Only to get pushed to that damn Verizon HotSpot Data Page minutes later. PISSED!
Verizon contract ends in a month. looks like im heading to sprint.
Well yeah your going to get the pushed "Verizon pay a monthly few page" if you try to use tethering through the built in hotspot. Download wifi tether or barnacle wifi tether and it should work on rooted devices. For USB tethering download easy tether and that does not require root. Yes I do believe this is a scare tactic unless for some reason you are using a total ungodly amount of data, then they will throttle your speed or possibly cut it off for the rest of that months Billing cycle. I have never ever had a problem and I don't feel threatened

[Q] Looking for a ROM that meets my wish list

Here's my wish list, in order of priority:
working wired tether
sense-based
gingerbread
My Verizon
NFL mobile
The wired tether seems to be the sticking point. I think the leaks started disabling it after a certain date, at which point it was disabled in a lot of roms. It works in Das bamf 1.0.4, but later versions broke it but fixed My Verizon and NFL.
I've tried several others and haven't found one that works yet. Anyone have a ROM that covers these bases? Would CM7 work, minus the sense?
Thanks
I think Sky Raider will fit all of that except for maybe My Verizon. There is an update coming soon but I don't know if My Verizon was something given much attention.
BAMF SoaB (Sense 3.5) works for all of that except I have no idea on the nfl mobile. I don't follow team sports.
KillaSense is my Rom. It's GB with the latest base 2.11.605.5, stock Sense 2.1, working wifi tether (go to wifi tether app, hit menu, settings, check routing fix and your good to go), working my Verizon, and I had NFL mobile working (hint: try signing in to my Verizon app first). Check it out.
Sent from my HTC ThunderBolt powered by KillaSense 3.0
Wired tether didn't work on SoaB or KillaSense. Keep in mind that I am talking about WIRED tether (aka Internet Connection Mode), not WiFi. The PC I'm tethering to doesn't have a wireless card.
SoaB didn't even have it in the menu options. If you can find it, let me know - it is a great looking ROM. KillaSense had the option, but when you check the box, the wheel just spins forever and doesn't do anything.
Wired Tether worked on SkyRaider, but My Verizon didn't. Wired tether is more important to me, so I'm going to stick with that until I find a different ROM that fits all of my needs. Thanks guys!
Pretty simple move files needed to make my Verizon work to skyraider. The file names escape me at the time, its like signonengine, ssopermissions, and my Verizon something to that effect.
If I helped you in any way please use the thank you button

Yeah I found that somewhere else. I didn't need to do the first part, just the part about logging in under no PRL.
I was on a super old froyo rom until recently because I was too lazy and almost everything worked that I needed. So I wasn't up on any of the new fixes. Thanks.
is all good,if it aint broke dont fix it and out ain't obsolete if it still does what you want it to do!

I use Synergy rom (latest nightly) and I can do all you asked for - though I have yet to try nfl. I use my verizon on a regular basis though so it should work. Also if wired tether is an all the time thing think about PDA net, I use to use that when i would wire-tether alot.
Why not use the rooted stock 605.5 gingerbread? Does all of the above and still root for any apps you want it for. I just downloaded My Verizon from market and it works. I'm using it b/c it seems to be giving me the best battery life i've ever had. I'm confused as to why as stock roms normally kill my battery, but i guess results will vary.
