At what point will vzw yell at HTC for crap build quality? - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just wondering something here. How many devices do you think Verizon is having to replace/refund/take back for light leakage, dust under the screen, broken volume rockers, sunk power buttons, etc etc etc? How much money is Verizon losing over replacements getting swapped, possibly running out of stock for new customers, and losing business because people get sick of trying to find one? Will it get to a point where vzw starts taking the issue up with HTC for loss of revenue? Or am I just thinking too much about it? I've personally swapped 2 devices. And do you think HTC will ever clean up their manufacturing so we don't keep having to accept devices with the least fault simply because a replacement might have worse problems?

Honestly, this isn't anything new. HTC had this same issue with the EVO. Apple has had it with the iPhone, iPad and iPad2. Those are just the ones I've had personal relations with as I had the EVO, wife had the original iPad, and my niece has the iPad2. My coworkers had some of the issues you listed with their Droids. Nothing has changed and in my opinion, the profits companies make isn't comparable to what you think is a loss. Most consumers don't notice or care about the issue. If they do, their returned device gets sold, or given away, again as a refurbished phone.

The only issue I've noticed is a sunk power button. Which I don't mind since it makes it tougher to accidentally bump it while in the pocket. Plus my case helps too.
Hopefully it won't sink to the point it stops working.

I'm not trying to be a jerk or anything, but most of these "issues" that people have been having are wayyyyy over blown. I mean light leakage? Really? people have nothing better to do than notice a tiny bit of light leakage? Yes, mine has it too, but I would have never noticed it if someone else on here hadn't mentioned it. Coming from a picky person, I don't say this lightly. But most of the things that people are whining about happen to just about every manufacturer of electronic devices.If you want build quality then find someone to build a 2k device. This is merely a situation of you get what you pay for. Personally, I love my phone, and I wouldn't trade it for anything else. I've had moto's, and nokias before. Their build quality is no better than HTC(actually Moto is much worse.). Last, paying attention to build quality issues on a message board is the same as working in a car dealer for brand X and saying that all brand X cars sucks because all you have are problems coming in on those cars. We are a very small subset of phone buyers and we will notice problems that MOST people won't.

I have gotten a Thunderbolt with a blown out speaker and crooked kickstand and another with major light leakage. It was so bad it looked like there were 2 leds on the bottom of the soft buttons under the buttons. When trying to use your phone in the dark it is not acceptable and I don't blame people for being upset. If im going to shell out $600 or sign a contract for something it better not be flawed out of the box.

My phone is perfect. I might have a sunk power button but it was like that from the start so its all I knew!

I understand that everyone wants their new $200+ phones to have been constructed to a dimension accuracy of a micron, but I guess its inevitable given the mass production process... I personally have really bad light leakage, but it doesn't really affect daily use so why make a big fuss over it? At least verizon is replacing them and not blaming us for "holding it wrong." Cough. Cough.

My first thunderbolt, the light leakage, was so bad you could see a steady line of light pouring out, forming a giant U from the bottom of the left side of the LCD, going all the way around to the bottom of the right side of the LCD, where the glass meets the bezel. I'm sorry, but when I'm paying 250 plus dollars for a flagship device, I expect a little quality control. These aren't things we should just have to expect and live with.

Exactly. At least our phones don't suffer from the death grip.

Then return it and get another one. With any electronic device you can expect a 10% or more defective rate. I'm not saying that none of the problems exist, but they exist with all phones, not just yours. You were just one of the "unlucky" 10% or so.

I'd love to get my hands on phone like the one Daniel Ocean's team procured to give to Willy Bank in Ocean's 13! Laser etched solid gold! Except Androidified! 4.3 inch shockproof screen and armed with a magnetron!

I swapped out today. It just seems unfortunate that issues like the light leakage (it may not be a big deal to some, but others it does matter) are something that people have come to expect and seem to have to live with. Especially when it seems like its as simple as the bottom of the screen not getting sealed as well as it should. Maybe I'm just picky, but ill keep taking phones back until I'm a satisfied customer.

And that's fine, the customer should be satisfied. But, there are alternative methods out there to seal the phone from that light leakage. A very small bead of black silicon should do the trick. It just seems like people expect 1000+ dollar build quality from a few hundred dollar device. If you want to take the phone back 50 times, that is your choice. However, being picky is not a build quality issue.

That is fair. But if it comes down to me having to take it upon myself to seal the screen with a small bead of silicon, that, at least in my eyes, is a fix for a build quality issue. And you are right, there is a difference between a 250 dollar device and a 1000 dollar device. However what about the folks that paid full retail for their phone? 599 I think? Are they entitled to expect more from the same device simply cause they paid more? In the end of it all, I don't feel like I should need to add a bead of silicon to seal my screen when it should have been sealed in the first place.
A friend of mine got the TB, and right away noticed multiple specs of dust under his screen. And I'm not talking about 1, maybe 2, he had a dozen or so scattered under his screen. How is that not bad QC? I know we shouldn't expect every device to be flawless and never expect issues, but some stuff just seems like it is easily fixable, stuff that the evo faced a year ago. That the Eris faced 2 years ago. And it keeps recurring in their devices.

[Q] How durable is the GS2?

Hey guys,a question about the SGS2 popped into my head earlier that I had forgotten to care about.
How durable is the GS2?I mean without silicon cases etc.It depends on the quality of the plastic used.
I know that the screen is pretty durable for sure(isn't it Gorilla Glass?),but what about the rest of the phone.From what I've heard,the original Galaxy S was pretty durable(heard stories of phones flying out of cars' windows etc),and my current Desire HD is really durable("really" is there because I have personal experience from the phone,not because it's more durable than the GS or something).
I intend to take care of my phone(Who doesn't take care of a 600 euro phone? ),but you cannot never be too sure!
Any feedback WITHOUT FLAMING OR HATING INCLUDED (taking precautions here as some people tend to defend the awesomeness of Sammy's phones with far too much zeal) is welcome.
Still eagerly waiting for the phone to arrive!
A lot of people think plastic automatically equates to bad build quality. Well, the Galaxy S II is proof that isn't the case -- it doesn't creek and there are numerous reports of people dropping theirs with no marks.
To sum up - does it feel as tough in the hand as my old HTC Leo? No. But does that mean it isn't? Not necessarily. I have had mine for a month with no build quality issues and long may it continue.
Durable = lasting in spite of hard wear or frequent use
So time alone will tell one month most definitely will not .

I never said that plastic means build quality is bad.It's just more likely to mean so than aluminium is,because there are various qualities of plastic and no one can guarantee(is it spelled like that?I'm studying atm so my English is a bit out of the ordinary,too many mistakes,sorry) that a manufacturer uses high quality plastic.
However it doesn't need to scream quality.My father has a Panasonic DSLR which is mainly(if not completely) mad of plastic.It has fallen on soil,water,rocks(in a cave-holy sh*t that man! ) and other surfaces numerous time and there is only a tiny(Like the tip of a nail) piece broken from the lens' cover.Nothing serious considering it's been going through that stuff for about four years now!
What I wanna say is that the GS2 might prove far better than most of us believe.
Did you guys own a GS1?What are your experiences from it?I mean apart from the usual problems with the device,like gps.

Yes i droped mine within 10mins of opening the box lol it bounced but no marks chips cracks scratches nothing. On the other hand i droped my desire hd when i had it and that gained a dent in the top both droped in my living room so they both took the same tumble and hit the same floor.

If it had truly bad build quality there would surely be some people complaining about it by now!
Once I got mine, I thought it felt like a toy and got a case for it immediately, but that doesn't mean it wouldn't be able to survive a drop. It just means my financial paranoia got the better of me

If you drop it, it's lighter, meaning it has less momentum on it, meaning that there's less force acting on the phone when it goes "smashing" into the ground and is there's less force, it's more likely to survive.
OFC not sure how that situation will take place in real life though.

Well,in a similar scenario my DHD kinda damaged the floor more than the floor damaged it.
Well,comparing the two isn't really that much fair.See,the way I see it,the biggest advantage of the plastic used on with the Galaxy series is that the reduced weight of the phones makes the force with which they hit the ground,should they fall,much smaller.And,using common sense,this means less damage.
That is my opinion though!

It feels fragile, but like someone just said the amount we've paid for them does instill some paranoia. I had my first test yesterday. In a Case-Mate Tough Case, the phone fell out of my hand, dropped arrow straight vertically and landed on one top corner. It then flopped on its face. This was on a concrete floor. I know the case saved it, but regardless the shock it took was pretty severe. So it's not frail and I'm now a Case-Mate fan.

Are you buying sim-free? And I haven't heard any rants about warranty, so I'm assuming it's good.
Plastic definitely has it's advantages. When you think of all the shattered iP4's, and the comments above about dented aluminum HTC's it might be a blessing. That and of course weight has me thinking maybe the Sensations hand feel might not be so great when it's out of your hands....and into gravity's
I dropped mine 12 days ago.
Took it out of my pocket whilst hurrying to get to a meeting I was late for, juggled it, managing to launch it to about 5ft in the air before it landed totally flat, face down on concrete with some small stones scattered across it.
That shattered the glass and broke the LCD screen. NO damage or marks anywhere else. It has been in for repair (£90 quoted) with the official Samsung service centre in Luton since Saturday 21st. Samsung are taking their time sending the replacement.
Just a little bit annoying!

So far I have returned 2 primes because of bad screen bleeding and every time it is getting worse. MUCH WORSE.

Welcome to the club. I returned 3. I don't care so much about screen bleed though, especially on the boot screen where it is most noticeable. I had stuck pixels and other weird issues.
I had two Primes with screen defects. I returned both and finally gave up on the TF201. I like the tablet overall; but lets get honest - someone over there in Taiwan is sleeping on the job when it comes to quality control. They need to be fired. It's absolutely unacceptable in this day and age for the same people to receive multiple defective units. Any my screen defects were not minor - they were pretty glaring.
Screen bleed is not even noticeable in everdsy use or during regular functions. it's only during bootup. if its minor, then that's normal. if its major bleeding, then exchange once again.
1st return due to dead pixels
2nd returning tomorrow due to 3 light bleeds

all my apps have a bowl or dark background. And i mainly use it at night. So it is considered regular use for me. But this light bleeding is so bad you can see is in bright light on low brightness. I should if kept my first one. At least I could sort of tolerate it

Same here:
1 returned for lots of stuck pixels and backlight bleed
2 even more stuck pixels, less bleed
3 almost no stuck pixels (still some though) but the worse in backlight bleed and had a creaking screen
Tomorrow I will get my 4th unit, but I don't get my hopes to high up
* I know IPS screens cannot be without some light bleeding completely, but my specimens all had these nasty large "bulbs" which can even been seen on lighter backgrounds.
Returned my second prime today. Light bleed and off center screen. Bestbuy had one other there.but it was onhold!! Grr.. Want my tablet back.

I dont have my prime yet but i guess its the same as with my phone? For the bootup screen brightness is set to 100%?

Looking at your pic, i really didnt notice much diffference from my boot up either..
Some people are incredibly fussy, and ruin it for everyone else.
youre going to get the most perfect non-bleeding TF201 soon, then drop it on the pavement...
Then start complaining about the quality of build...

Yes it looks like the boot screen is set to 100%. Mine looks very poor too. Once passed the boot screen no complaints
I've had screen bleed on two Primes that was noticeable on ANY dark background and detracted from the enjoyment of using the device. I also had one where the light bleed was not noticeable on any (normal) screen, and I would have kept that one had it not had other problems (non-functional haptic feedback, a rattle near one of the dock connectors that got worse over time).
My wife's Galaxy Tab 10.1 has zero light bleed. My original Transformer had tons of light bleed that was only visible when booting; I never noticed it otherwise during 8 months of use.
Light bleed is something that I think it highly subjective as to whether or not it's a problem. Nobody can say one way or another whether it's a problem for a given person and/or with a given device. Returning a device because it has an issue like this, therefore, is entirely appropriate and it's ridiculous to assert otherwise. Keeping a device with light bleed can also be entirely appropriate.
People have different standards for their devices. And nobody should feel like returning a device somehow deprives another consumer. It's up to the company to make enough of something, not for every potential purchaser to bite the bullet so some stranger can move up in the line.
If you are looking for perfection in something, I think you'll be highly disappointed.

I completely disagree. If you spend your hard earned money on something it should be free from defects. I havent complained about the gps at all. I personally do not care. The people that do care however I leave alone because gps is stated on the box. It doesnt say sometimes working gps it says gps. As for screen bleed and dead pixels....are you kidding me?? Do I agree with the hundreds of threads on the issues? No. But I do believe your product should work as advertised. Guess what, Asus isnt doing charity work here. Ever heard of cost of doing business? I run a 3 million dollar a year high end tile and stone store and i replace material for what sometimes seems like nothing to me but then I remeber..oh yeah these people that are spending 4-6k on their bathrooms are WRITING my paycheck....If something has a minor chip or scratch..guess what? Its replaced. No questions asked. This is the reason my company has gone from 24 stores to 62 store in the last 5 years. Im not talking 800sf gamestops either.. im talking 25000sf 3+ million to open showrooms. So if you are a manufacture like us sometimes you need to SUCK IT UP and do the right thing. No matter how insignificant it may seem to you these people work hard for their money just like I do. If Asus was non profit maybe I would feel different but they arent. They are in it to win it and are competing with the big boys in town and need to get their act together!!!!

Good for posting this, it will let others know just how bad it really is.
My first prime from Gamestop has screen bleed and horrible performance, i sold it and got another from Office Depot which so far has been perfect (besides the gps,wifi and bluetooth defects we all have).
I was going to try and sell my second prime and be done with Asus all together but nobody around here will buy it lol, so I decided to just hang on to it.
A device like this should come with no defects, and you shouldn't be expected to lay down and just take it in the rear.

Burnt Screen Repair or Custom ROM?

Hello, here is my problem:
I bought the phone used (refurbished) from a second hand store. The phone's exterior is is great condition. There is only one problem: The OLED display is terribly burned! Black screen are washed out with heat marks (inverse burns), and coloured screens are burnt.
The phone probably used to be a display phone for an store somewhere. The blue leds are the worst (yes I know what I am talking about), and the green and red ones are okay. I try not to display any images or colors that have more that 30% blue.
I've been ripped off too. The store has a BS no refund policy that they told me after I bought the phone. I can't do an exchange (partially my fault too, because I was afraid they would give me a worse phone!). I had no idea it was burned until I went home and turned it on. I was planning on returning it, but then did some research about the business.. I will never shop there again
I don't want to the phone replaced unless it is a newer model, or better condition than this one (that I have). And I don't want to go to a third party service, unless they actually know what they are doing. The process of removing the screen is time consuming, and very risky. I don't trust anyone but Samsung at the moment.
So.. I have two options:
a) Don't get the phone repaired, and maybe flash a better Rom on it. This will probably ruin my chances of ever getting my phone fixed by Samsung if I am not careful. Short term satisfaction, until the screen dies out (I hate OLED displays for that reason).
Or
b) Pay Samsung to fix or replace my phone. I have contacted them a month ago, and they said that I could get a repair as long as my phone was not rooted. I have no idea how much it should cost (if you know, please tell me!), or, if it is really worth it. Long term satisfaction, a working screen.
And Im not talking little ghosting burns either. My screen is always a greenish yellow tinge. And I cant look at anything without seeing a burned in screen.
And if they flash at&t ics Rom because I am still on GB, then I will root and flash ShoStock 3 instead.
What should I do? What is your experience? And where (and for how much) will Samsung charge for a screen repair? Thanks.

Sorry, I meant the screen they are supposed to be replacing. They say the replacement is a oem lcd screen, which dosent exist for the i777.

If you are going to replace the screen yourself...and I just did it..not hard at all. Etradesupply.com has the lcd digitizer with front housing for under 120 dollars. It includes capacitive button ribbon as well. Yes this company is in China...but it was recommended by a friend of mine and I am very happy with the product. I replaced my screen very easily. If you go that route it is worth it.

I am happy that you found a replacement screen for your device.
But, how long is it going to last? I am surprised that companies are spending money to make OLED (not LCD) displays for phones that are outdated. This phone is maybe two years old now, and if the screen is this burnt out: Is it really worth it? Do I have to keep replacing my screen every 2 years, or, is Samsung going to admit that their samoled, and other OLED technologies are "not ready for long term use because they die too quickly"?
Of course not, they just want your money!
A OLED works almost the opposite way as a LCD does. A LCD must send MORE power to a pixel that is displaying a dark pixel, while a LED display uses less energy to power a dark pixel. Almost like those old CUT monitors, it uses the additive theory of light, versus the LCD subtracting theory of light.
But they still use three color pigments: Red, Green, and Blue.
Someone who claims they are selling a i777 LCD digitizer with bottom button row is a nut ball, or, are false advertising what they are selling. I seem to be finding this problem with every third-party part company that sells parts for the OLED display.
I wish it had a LCD: It would last so much longer. Less heat, less problems, less stress, cheaper parts, and more confidence.
My verdict:
I don't trust myself enough to replace the parts myself. I ruined my iphone 3gs that way, and don't want to ruin this phone. If the phone was cheaper (I was also ripped off for the phone), then I would be slightly less reluctant to do it myself.

Just in this statement you're comparing apples to oranges. There is no comparison,They are not manufactured they same. This device is much much easier to disassemble and reassemble then any I-device. And anyone that has this device, knows that the screen longevity is about two years and that the blues are what burns out the quickest, unfortunately its part of the business world, mass production and cutting overhead.
In my opinion, from just reading your posts you're trying to get a quality device at a minimal cost and now you're going to nickle and dime yourself to death. On top of that, getting aggravated every time you look at your device. Save yourself time, money and aggravation and get a new device...besides.... this one, even though its still a great device and still being supported by great devs is a dinosaur and will in the near future be shelved.

Just my own opinion, but I think they're well aware that their oled displays don't last long. Odds are their thinking is that if your average display lasts between 2-3 years it'll help push you towards another new device. Just something to consider.
I have been looking at the Nexus 4. This phone (I777), is the perfect size phone for me. Not huge, but not small either. I just really hate the OLED. If it were ten years into the future (assuming that the led technology has a longer life span), then I would not be having this problem.
The nexus 4 is slightly bigger than the S2.. I like to buy older phones, because they come at reduced cost. Maybe I will wait for the next nexus to come out, then buy the old or new one.

So I'm asking this because I'm planning on returning my nexus 9 tomorrow and getting a replacement, because I have the following
Light bleed
Terrible battery life ( Max of 5 hours SOC )
crappy buttons on the side
The back creaks slightly
Is it worth returning or do you think I'll get the same issues again or maybe worse?

I suggest you to wait. As far as I know it's a matter of luck of getting a device with none of the known defects. Older and younger builds do have defects.

Turn down the brightness. Its a big screen, the brighter its set, the less the life. And 5 hours screen on is HUGE.

I quite like the buttons on these things, bit harder to press so you have to really mean it. Nexus 7 is a problem because it is too easy to accidentally bump the buttons.

Are you ****ing kidding me here? Ya let's let ALL these issues go, so the NEXT tablet that comes out is an even bigger piece of **** with more problems because people like you let them get away with it.
Let me ask you this, should we accept ALL light bleed as OK no matter how bad, or is there a cutoff at some point where its no longer acceptable? Right off the bat I'll tell you youre wrong because they don't ALL do it. I just returned a nexus 9 that had next to 0 light bleed. I've never, not once in my life exchanged a device for any reason. Never. But im on my 4th nexus 9, 2 of which had almost no light bleed at all. My last ones screen flickered so bad and the speakers froze and cut in and out so much I couldn't deal with it anymore, which was number 2 nexus 9. Open the new one tonight in the parking lot and boot it. Horrendous lightbleed and volume buttons that were literally ****ing recessed into the frame. I don't know about you, but I'm not a god damn woman so I don't have fingernails to reach a recessed button, and I for damn sure ain't carrying around a ****ing paperclip to adjust the volume on a tablet. So I exchange it. Get nexus 9 #4. Buttons stick out of frame perfectly. Completely different from the one i just had in my hands. But that's not a quality control issue to you. I should have kept the one that had unpressable volume buttons so you won't have to pay more for your next tablet. Too ****ing bad buddy. I'll return EVERY single piece of **** I get, and GLADY pay more for the next version if I don't need a paper clip to adjust the volume, Dramamine for the constant screen flicker, and a speaker that actually plays sound.

And if I sounded pissy in that post, its because on nexus #4 I just noticed the entire upper left hand side of my screen is completely ****ing yellow/brown, it looks like absolute ****. So even this one has bad light bleed when the screen is dark, and when the screen is light, 1/4 of it is piss yellow. This tablet came from the store today, so much for issues being fixed.

I've got the same thing. Plus, the microphone seems to have issues (sensitivity is so low, that it won't hear any "okay google" unless i really scream at it, for instance)! I would return it, but i am too afraid i might get an even worse unit.
Turns out HTC and Google really messed everything up with this one. I guess i was lucky to end up with a yellow-tinted Nexus 9 because, according to all people's reports, that might just be the best hardware version of it! With that in mind, I've never been so unsatisfied about a purchase before. I've always accepted some minor issues as i don't believe there are perfect devices, but i've never heard about so many different and major issues, especially for a tablet of this price. Not even to mention about the software issues, so far. This is just rediculous!

I ordered mine directly off the play store.
I bought mine from Expansys (Europe). It's a pretty late batch (HTC4CC, which I think means December) therefore no back bending, no deep volume buttons and normal lightbleed for an LCD. But the fact that there are still issues and the quality of such an expensive tablet is questionable enough to make you stick with a yellowish screen, is really depressing. Anyway, I am really glad yours is perfect and I hope next batches manage to be as good as this tablet should be, but that doesn't change the fact that HTC and Google really dropped the ball on this one.

Your image is designed to exaggerate a non-problem into a problem.
Dark ambient = long exposure.
Also your picture isn't taken straight on. Its at an angle with the "bad" corner closest to the camera.

OK, so you're telling ME, the one who had the tablet in front of my face it didn't have light bleed and I purposefully 'designed' this picture to exaggerate a problem? Here's the bottom line and I could not give 2 flying ****s what you think I did or didn't do. My tablet had horrible HORRIBLE light bleed. How it looks in that picture is pretty damn close to how it looked in person while in a dark room. Period, end of story. People like you who repeatedly send your hardware back under warranty for imaginary "problems" that are perfectly within the design specifications of the device **AND NOT EVEN CORRECTED** by the warranty replacement, cause the price of hardware to increase for the rest of us, because the cost of that warranty replacement is distributed to EVERYONE who buys that hardware.
I suggest that you return it and buy yourself a ROCK AND A CHISEL. At least if you complain about that, it won't increase the price for the rest of us.

1) I just said in the post you quoted I've NEVER in my life exchanged or returned any devices out of literally dozens. Obviously besides the nexus 9, but since you don't seem to fully read my previous comments in this thread I feel I need to point this out.
2) I haven't warrantied ONE nexus 9. I bought mine from best buy after launch and had until Jan 15 to exchange. So I did. If you actually READ my posts you'll see each one was returned for multiple issues, light bleed being at the back of my list of issues that concern me.
Would you keep a device that had speakers that didn't work? Yes or no? Would you keep a device that had volume buttons LITERALLY recessed inside the frame, making them completely unable to be pressed? Yes or no? Light bleed just happened to be another issue to top these major defects off.
So, since all these problems HAVE been noted in this thread, in fact I'm pretty sure they were in posts you quoted me on, you're telling me non-working speakers and unpressable buttons are both imaginary and within design specs?
Throw horrendous light bleed on top for icing on the cake.

Rear Camera 'vibrating' defect

This is a PSA for anyone who uses their HTC 10 on a car, truck, motorcycle, or any place where there is vibration. Some part of the camera mechanism (the camera, laser sensor, or something else) fails after being used around a lot of vibration. The front camera is fine, and I've removed the gel cover/protector and cleaned all the surfaces. I don't use the camera a lot, so it's not from overuse.
The image shown on the screen is what you would see if you taped it to the shaking machine used at paint stores. There is an audible vibrating sound and feeling from the top of the phone by the camera and not from the bottom where the real vibration unit is.
This is now the second phone that has died like this. I did some research and this has happened to other HTC phones. Such a disappointment that they didn’t test the device thoroughly enough. It's still basically new, so I'm not taking it apart to see what's going on inside. I'll take it back to Verizon and demand a new unit on the spot and not have to wait for another remanufactured POS to be sent.

Though I agree with you that if there's a failure while using it on a motorcycle mount it certainly deserves a warranty replacement...I don't think taping it to a mechanical paint can shaker can be used as evidence of a design defect. No normal person uses their phone taped to a paint shaker.
I may be wrong, but I imagine that scenario causing WAY more vibration than using it on a motorcycle phone mount.
This is totally the ois. Optical image stabilization uses very small motor movements of the optical assembly to maintain focus. Understandable it has a limit and can be hosed by excessive vibration. Also very possible that the op had a defective one. Read up on the iPhone 6+ and their ois failures that affected a large number of phones.

The paint shaker was an example of what the screen shows after failing, not as an example of a clearly abusive use case. Sarcasm and no contribution to the dialog really doesn’t help.
The knowledge of cameras and the ois is helpful; thank you for providing a beneficial reference for more reading.

True...I apologize for the sarcasm...and dottat is on point as always. But your initial post when literally read didn't say your phone camera failed due to your use of it on a motorcycle/truck/car mount...you simply issued a warning for those who might use it in that manner and about using it around a lot of vibration based on your tests of it failing on a paint shaker...lol
From the initial read of your post I took it as you were crying wolf which is even less useful than funny sarcasm in the world.
But I will certainly refrain from using it this way in my car and stick with hot spotting my 10 and let my M8 or ipad mini take the abuse while Wazing etc.

I solved the camera problem and did the math on the phone flying off the bike at California highway speeds last night in 3 words "there it goes..."
The camera got fixed by a new phone being ordered through Asurion, and the math is $150 (insurance deductible) + $100 for new SanDisk Extreme Plus 128gb SD card + $40 for my third Sunshine mailing + $60 for a new cradle, gummy body shell, and TechGlass Skinomi screen protector. $340 is the answer. Oh, add several hours to figure out how to dampen vibrations.
Until then, it's back to the best phone I've had in years and still like better than the 10, the G3. If LG makes a new version later this year that's close and gets unlocked, the 10 will be gone in minutes. Oh, the camera works fine on the G3 with 10k miles on it.

Sunshine no longer requires mail in. Why not just warranty it through HTC for free? They have an advanced replacement option.

You can get Leedroid over in the regular HTC 10 forum. His rom will flash to Verizon. The last time I flashed it though there was a data roaming bug if your phone was on 3g.

The new 10 is up and running. I am getting a fixed mount that will eliminate the "how about a new phone right NOW" problem. I'm researching a different cradle that has equal holding grip and also some damping capability. The motorcycle forums cover that topic. The hardware version is still 0001 (after 3 of them).
The camera on phone #3 is broken after just 2 days of commuting with it in my jacket which is the equivalent of a what someone who rides a bicycle would do. I don't care what anyone says, this phone has inferior camera sensors. If you have an active lifestyle, stay away. I so want it to work, but after 3 phones, it has proven my original statement.
As soon as an equivalent phone hits the market and is unlocked/rooted, I'm jumping ship.

Don't get a phone with ois. Something you are doing doesn't agree with it. Hell I fly airplanes and film video while in them with my phone and still am on phone number 1. I run half marathons with the thing in a pouch with sweat all over it and no problems.

I had a long conversation with my carrier yesterday and I'm being sent a new one as a mfg defect (fact, not opinion). Again, not arguing I need to treat this phone more carefully, but my problem was not the first. Out of respect for the positive discussion here, I'll just say I hope HTC is able to make a firmware or hardware revision to reduce the chances of this particular issue.
I've always liked HTC and there is some of the best and brightest Android minds doing awesome work on this phone and I don't want to discourage anyone from jumping on board.

I had a long conversation with my carrier yesterday and I'm being sent a new one as a mfg defect (fact, not opinion). Oh yeah that's very possible you are hitting it just the right way. My only point was it doesn't agree with you at this time. I would be curious if the inbound update works any better.

New phone was a new, in box model, but the build still says 0001, so HTC is still on the first parts build (I'd that field in settings is accurate).
I ordered mounting hardware from Adaptive Technologies because they were the only company who marketed specific vibration reduction design. We'll see.

The funny thing is they don't really increment the hardware version even if they use different displays etc. I wouldn't put much weight in that number at all.
Thanks for this thread. I am a new motorcycle rider and my HTC 10 lasted about 4 months of motorcycle riding. I replaced it because it has a battery issue and a broken vibrate motor. My new 10 lasted about a month of motorcycle use. I thought it was a software or firmware issue.
Here is a video link of what the camera does. After the pics fails.
If anybody knows how to disable ois I would loo very to hear it.
