Ohh Heavenly XDA Fascinate forums please guide my rooting and CWM install! - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello....
So i found a guy on craigslist to trade my Droid 2 for the Fasicnate, drove thirfty miles to his house and listend to him freak out for 35 mins as i explained the benifits of my droid 2 and it being rooted and he seriously begain hyperventelating because he was dead straight afraid of being arrested........ I was about to just.... i dont know, the word run came to mind... Anyway.
WHat a beautiful phone, i mean it you guys have got something here, and im glad i added this to my growing list of android device's this is my fifth since my first love The G1.
Anyways,
I presumed and though i could install Cyanogenmod on it that was the immediant reason i got it, i didnt do any reaseachr and now know that u can but it runs really ruff and isnt supported... so.
I modded via this cyanogen wiki
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Samsung_Fascinate:_Rooting
i got all the way to the part about installing rom manager and flashing CWM,
However i went to do this (yes im rooted) and all i get is when i flash cwm and i try to reboot into cwm from rom manager to make a backup is i get to the samsung 2e recovery screen ..
A little more research i see something that i need to install or excuse me i need a program called odin, and i need the cwm packaged via this thread but the CWM package is no longer hosted...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788099
But, one im not completly sure that is what i need to do and two im seein what i think is a bunch of diff versions of baseband like D101 ect However i see on mine that the last of my baseband is Dh12 actually its all s:i500.04 v.dh12
SHould i be downgrading here? And its best to assume while i have rooted and taken the virginity of the G1, Eris, Droid, Droid 2 Droid X and now this beyond what i have described here is my limited experience with this phone.
Also bear in mind that this phone was factory reset when i got it, and was 100% virgin. It is now rooted but that is it. I really wanted to get back to "my roots" like my G1 and have a fully modable phone from kernal on up and was stoked to get this. But im lost and i cant seem to find much help else where, or what appears to be people telling me to reroot and i know that is incorrect.
Can you all point me in the right direction please!
My sincere apprecation and thanks for your help and acceptace of my sporatic typeing.

Don't have a chance to read this atm but before you get flamed..you should post this in the general or Q and A section instead..

Instructions.

First, welcome to the Fascinate forums. Second, please try to faimilariaze yourself with the rules here. This thread should have gone in Q&A and you are quite likely to get flamed for it eventually.
As for your questoin-- We don't have a fully functioning AOSP, CM6, or 7 yet but what we have is pretty close. If you can live without MMS, Camcorder, and BT headset then you should give one them a shot. If not, stick with one of the Touchwiz builds such as Nitro's Evil Fascination or Adrylnalyn's Superclean.
Nitro has linked you to all the necessary software. As for using Odin, please reference this thread.

Nitro always looking out! One of our most valuable members I might add.
I would strongly reccommebd flashing Nitro's Evil Fascination Froyo rom and perhaps one of his themes once you get that far. You won't regret it. Trust me. Super sexy and super fast and he's very friendly and knowledgable. Keeps all his work updated on a regular basis too. Good luck and congrats on your new Fascinate!

Got all the links you could ever ask for from nitro. Just install Odin on your comp and install the Samsung drivers. Then just go to the link for the older cwm and d/l the necessary file.
Remove battery from the phone and while you're holding the volume down.button plug the phone into.your.computer. it'll show a yellow android and say downloading.
Click PDA and choose the file you downloaded for cwm 2.5 and click start. Once it.says pass on Odin you're done.
Even easier, get one of the packagaes from one of these threads it includes adryns froyo rom, the modem for.froyo and the recovery. I don't feel like finding the link but if you get that it's easy its just one big file that you flash with Odin (the same.way you do with cwm) and when its done you got a froyo fascinate with a solid touchwiz rom from adryn

Nitro thank you for all the links that saved me a lot of searching. And everyone else ty for your help.
As for the flaming i could care less it shows lack of maturity and what someone wants to bash me for is simply a waste of time. I dont care what some moron in his moms basement who is jumping from tab to tab from porn, to there wow or pokemon fetish and XDA. One would hope because of the intregrity here they would get banned.. Anywho.
And lastly the reason for posting here is because i didnt figure that the forum mentioned was classified for my question because it has nothing to do with "general" and everything to do with "development".. So, my apoligies if i was wrong and ill attempt to look a little better next time.
Thank you.

Hey Mortland,
Welcome to these forums. I am still fairly new here at XDA. Just to clarify and help you understand what everyone was referring to. I believe if I read them correctly, the rules about the Development section say posts and especially new threads in the development section should be limited to things that are directly related to development of a ROM, kernel, or MOD. This is so the development forum is used for improvements to existing ROMs, kernels, or MODS, or development of new ROMS, kernels, or MODS so the developers doing this work do not have to wade through a laundry list of threads or non-development questions in order to get the information they need. So if you have questions about development, or want to report a bug or problem you have discovered with a ROM, kernel, or MOD, then you come here and post. If it is a question on how to install or use a ROM, kernel, or MOD, then I guess it is supposed to go over in the Q&A section. I know it can seem kind of confusing, so the only reason for me posting is to hopefully help clear up any of the confusion. Hope this has helped, and definitely follow nitrogliceryne's advice and help. Good luck.
Mods and devs,
Sorry if this long post has cluttered things up even more. Just trying to help.

From now on, just no one answer it. So it gets buried away or Mod erases it.

Can't we just request that MOD move it to the Q&A section? Especially since some good links were posted there? No sense being a wanker about it, except that it can be fun if you woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning.
I know it makes all the "experienced" users feel good to bash every new guy that posts in the Development Thread but something really should have occurred to the community at large by now:
If this is happening something like 15 times per day, maybe the thread title should be renamed to Developers ONLY or Not for Q&A (or something like that)...although I'm kind of guessing that it's an auto-naming thing that they have set up for each new device that gets listed on the forums, so that might not be an option.

Usually I'm not very into getting threads moved when they're placed where they are but this thread is just straight ridiculous. Hyperventilating, seriously?
We need to have some sort of HTML implemented that allows any user to click the button and flag the thread for being moved. Not flagged for being inappropriate or reporting, just flagged for need of being moved to another section.

You need to look in this [Guide]

It has The answers, info and links I believe you need to get to over the hump...
Sometimes it may help to print those instructions and cross off steps as you do them,, to make sure you don't accidentally overlook anything

Best rom for the vibrant? easy install?

did i miss something here? can you re elaborate?`
next time pls post in the right section, thing belongs to Q&A section.
now on topic.. this has been asked so many times and to be honest you will not get a straight answer because it all comes down to preference. some roms are built for speed & power while some are build for long battery life.
so my advise to you is read through the comments of the roms posted try as many as you can til you find what is best to meet your needs. and when you get more experience flashing, you might want to try to mix and match ROMs, Kernels, and Modems to get exactly what your looking for.
peace~
I would have to say Axura 2.2 is by far the best that I have tried, very smooth and fast. At this point I have had no issues!!!
Sry I'm new to posting, I read only most the time.

what in froyo b.s. is going on here?
if you are looking for a fast rom to get straight to the point then download a stock rom and flash with odin but if the quest. is about fast rom then you have some choices. I personally feel that nero is speedy without a lag fix but so is axura. have fun testing. not enough new stuff for me to flash binge this weekend. lol
I like ginger clone
stock JL4!!! Everything just... works
ginger clone works really good for me. I dont even feel a lag fix is necessary for this one

Not cool. Post reported.
I'm currently running the Ginger Clone. It's an easy install (assuming you're familiar with Clockwork). All you do is put the zip file on your internal sd card, boot to recovery, and install the zip. Easy as can be.
However, if you've never flashed a rom before, boot up Odin and get familiar with it. Some people make Odin seem like it's this programmer-only type of toy, but it's super easy and user-friendly as well. You just need to follow directions on what file to put where (.pit files go in the PIT slot and .tar files go under the PDA area). Odin is sort of a "holy ****, I can't do anything with this phone anymore" option. It will get you back to BONE stock, how your phone shipped.
I've been thinking about writing a guide to flashing and recovery if anyone thinks that would help? I'm kind of a novice myself, but I've familiarized myself enough with flashing and Odin that I think I could write a guide if there was a demand for it.
Man this is why new folks get discouraged with posting. Aside from the fact that a new guy posted in the wrong section (easy mistake) telling him to load a ROM not intended for his phone potentially bricking it is jacked up. Why would anyone do that? Even if you were successful loading it to your phone.

he best ROM will be one that will adapt to user needs.
So, just testing to see many different ROMs.
This type of thread does not help and may cause flames.
Although the idea is not bad, it is best you find out more about each ROM and draw your own conclusion!

[Q] Rom manager not working, any simple alternates?

I managed to root my phone and install Rom manager from the marketplace so I could flash a stock 2.2 rom (instead of the 02 one I have)
But I cannot get it to boot into clockwork recovery or install from SD card.
any ideas?

Its 02, I installed Rom manager (previously clockwork mod). I successfully flashed the recovery but when It reboots it doesn't boot into recovery.
Flash THIS Recovery
Or THIS Recovery
And both will let you into recovery but you can only flash a custom rom with those recoverys
If you want to flash THE OFFICIAL 2.2 Then Flash THIS Recovery
Hope that helps
Edit: Ah posted at the same time.. will have a look and report back shortly, thanks!
EDIT 2: Ok, had a look.... how to I flash recovery's? ROM manager has the option to use different recovery greyed out? And there no way im doing that fastboot, takes far too long!
So have you figured out that ROM Manager doesn't work for the Streak?
Hmm... QDL and Fastboot seem to take a little less time than say AT&T OTA
Start Here:
http://streakdroid.com/?page_id=92
What I missed ? Everytimes , I tries to flash a new rom on my Dell Streak , with Rom Manager , when I finished the step " reboot and install " , then my Streak simply rebooted and then no further action taken .
To everyone trying to use ROM Manager on the Streak:
STOP!
ROM Manager has never worked on the Streak and continuing to try to use it will only result in headaches on your part. The only accepted method of flashing a ROM on a Streak is through the Recovery. Speaking of the Recovery, it should NOT be Clockworkmod, because that recovery doesn't work properly with the Streak. Streakmod is the recommended recovery.
Now, had you ROM Manager guys actually searched the forums you would have found this out rather than posting yet another thread on how the app doesn't work.
Next time use the damn search engine on this site. It's not there just to make the site look pretty, and in using it you will in fact be following the site's rules.

you all over the place with this. You are my hero right now.
Sadly the folks will still post without searching.
Quite honestly, I have little enough patience for people as it is. People who seek the "quick fix" and are unwilling to put the time in to learn about their devices are annoying enough. Lazy ass people who can't be bothered to spend the time looking for answers to their questions before posting are a plague. Both deserve to be taken to the back of the tool shed and flogged.
I believe from now on, in addition to calling out people for being total idiots, I'll be reporting the posts as well. Because this bulls**t has got to stop. Searching before posting is the number one site rule on XDA, and it's about damn time it gets enforced. The only way for it to BE enforced is by letting the moderators know about it.

Post #2 is from the moderator, too often these threads get shuffled around and are not closed and/or deleted.
Yeah, I know Lufc moved the thread. He's pretty proactive on that. But unless people report the thread as violating the site rules he really can't do much about it.
I've been pretty lenient in just posting reminders to get the noobs and lazy people among us to actually use the tools that are present on this site. But my patience for that crap is at an end. If someone can't be bothered to use the search tools on this site, expect to be called out on it and the post reported.
EDIT: Looking back at the thread, can someone explain to me just how in the heck you can come upon a thread that details the problem you are having and not at least read the thread before you post to it?
I'm starting to notice a trend. I think that as our phones get older more people are ditching them, selling them, and the new owners are stumbling on XDA.
I know I was a total Android noob when I got my Streak, but had been on XDA for a while, so was well aware of the search function. Not to mention reading the stickies.
I think this is gonna keep getting worse!

To the former HTC owners (or anyone else)

Hi,
I recently upgraded to this device from the EVO3D. I have a question with regards to rooting.
With the EVO, every time there was a major OTA update, there were always firmware/radio updates to flash through the bootloader with fastboot in addition to the ROM base itself.
Does this exist with Samsung phones or is everything contained within the ROM package itself? I have a phone with 2.3.4 and was going to try a 2.3.6 ROM but didn't want to leave any important updates behind.
I have read through all the stickies and page through the general as well as the Q& A section and did not see it addressed.
Thanks for the help.
Obviously anyone who wants to chime in is more than welcome.

Basically, anything is independently flashable. Sometimes there will be interdependencies between components, but not usually.
1) Right now there is NO reason to ever flash bootloaders - avoid it. Any CWM-flashable firmware in these forums does not include BLs. (This may change with ICS.)
2) Don't flash anything with a .PIT in Odin - it'll hose your device.
3) You can mix and match any radio firmware with any system firmware. (At least for Gingerbread. ICS is an unknown.) It's not like many HTC devices, where the radio acted as a bootloader for the applications processor - on Samsungs, the AP bootloads the modem.
4) Older kernels can cause problems with newer firmwares. My latest releases should work with any Gingerbread firmware other than AOSP/CM7.
Thank you. I am a forever Noob.
With HTC the updates were always stripped of any bootloader updates to remain s-off. The remainder was always flashed through recovery or fastboot. I am trying to understand this wotld a little more. I have become very afraid of bootloaders from my time there.
I would assume the good people here will help guys like me if things change with ICS?

Yup. Any ICS update should contain clear instructions on if the bootloader situation changes. (Right now, there's no evidence of this.)
It is my opinion that anyone who provides a bootloader flash should always do it separately and make it clear under what circumstances the user should flash the BLs.
In general, be careful about flashing factory-originated firmware updates as these can include bootloaders. Almost anything here won't. (However, the first UCKK6 leaks did... Next time an I777 leak shows up we know how to remove the BLs though.)
One last question. You have been very helpful. If i use your kernel to get CWM onto the phone to avoid the flash counter, it will play nice with stock rooted 2.3.4?

This is by choice. Just by spending a little time reading the FAQ, looking through the stickies and perusing the forum in general would have probably prevented you from starting this thread. Always do a search before starting a new thread and whenever possible post to an already existing related thread rather than start a new one. No more newbie pass for you.

Sometimes you have to ask a question in a way that makes sense to you to understand the answer. Otherwise what is the point of a Q& A section?

Yes, it should. You'll need to root your phone to install my kernel without the counter - either SuperOneClick (works for UCKH7) or my prerooted system image (flashing custom system images doesn't trigger the counter)

It certianly isn't to ask questions that can be answered with an investment in time and reading or that have been asked and asnwered already.
Here's a tip I and others give newbies looking for answers: During the initial period of looking/searching/reading, do NOT use your phone. Use a PC so you can see full pages and it will be easier to gather information. Tapatalk or the XDA app should be limited to making replies or casual reading of the forum, not as a way to research these often complex subjects.

Rom Manager

Just rooted my Samsung Galaxy S2 AT&T with the Zedomax Kernel and it also flashed Clockworkmod recovery. Everything went great. Can I update the recovery using rom manager? I ask this because the GS2 combines the kernel with the recovery I think and to use rom manager for anything you must flash the recovery from rom manager. Coming from HTC phones where this was never a problem. Just don't want to screw anything up.
Thanks for any help,
Vinny

The forum has been changed radically in the past couple of days, and I'm not sure if this is still evident to new users, but it used to be plastered all over the forum. DO NOT USE ROM MANAGER WITH THIS PHONE.
In particular, you can not install ClockworkMod Recovery from Rom Manager, as it will not work. You must use a ClockworkMod Recovery that is integrated into the kernel. I would suggest that you flash Entropy512's Daily Driver kernel.
It still is plastered.. why don't new people follow the etiquette of any one new to anything that they should read the FAQs!
As you can see by the amount of posts and years I have been a paid member I am no rookie. As for reading before asking, I did. I even went to the search section and asked without any luck so being a long time paid member I thought I could ask without getting my ass chewed out. If you see by my question I already flashed a kernel with CWmod recovery. I asked if I could use Rom Manager to update the Kernel.
Thanks for the help.

To be honest, I didn't even look over in the left column to see your post count before I posted my answer. (I usually do.) However, from the way you worded your question, it is obvious that you are new to this phone and the I-777 forums, even though you are not new to XDA. Over the previous months, there have been a large number of questions asked that are already answered if the person had just read a little first. And your question about ROM Manager, in one form or another, has been one of the chief offenders. You say, "As for reading before asking, I did." But go to the sticky post in this forum, (or the one in the General forum or the similar one in the development forum as they're all about the same) and click on the link that says FAQ topic. You'll see what I meant in my previous post.
Don't get bent out of shape over this. You're an experienced member who can pitch in and help other folks out, so when you come around the forums, do that. The moderators are just asking us all to be responsible.
As mentioned before do not use room manager to flash roms kernels or whatever.you can use it to download different roms but even those can be corrupted or not finished a many users saw with the CM9 build that was posted there.

Nevertheless, had you read the main (and now only) sticky in here or in General, you would know not to use RomManager on this phone and would not have had to ask.
And with that, topic closed.
Search more people... please! Use Google, use XDA.. but SEARCH. REad the FAQ's before posting.. it is FORUM RULES.

Just got HTC one X+

Please dont be mad, im a noob. Link the easiest way to install custom rom on this device. I bought this phone in Norway so i guess its the international version. Are there supernexus 4.2.2 for this phone? Can I get EVERYTHING back to stock if something failes and I have to send it in to repair? What happened with my s2 was that powerbutton failed so I could not flash any other kernel or rom. I suck at rooting etc on android, because I think when I was jailbreaking my iphone back in the 3gs days, you could always get it to factory settings with plugging it to pc and do restore. Can I do this to this phone with a toolbox or something? Please post here I have to go now, will check this thread later.
Understanding everything and browsing this site is very hard to me, please understand. I have apex launcher so it looks like stock jellybean but its not so smooth as I want it to, so I think i have to install a custom rom. It must be stable and easy!
I'd love to help but you need to learn the forum rules before you start posting topics. Why don't you check out a few of the sticky threads first and you'll probably learn some new things about when and where to post these questions and heck you might even get many of your questions answered haha.
right first thing to do is read up on these forums on rooting then once you have completed that read again The golden rule to remember is NEVER wipe your DATA from recovery! other than that you should be safe :victory:
use this recovery http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1995002 which as support for sideloading should you get into trouble.
I'm sorry, but I don't understand why you guys that are here and have full control can't link me a thread or something where this is discussed, and then I can post questions there. This place is so advanced so it's hard for us noobs to come in to the scene. I'm good to follow step by step guides and thats it Before I have followed guides on youtube because noone here could give me an answer, but I want to learn a little on how to probably do this because I'm scared to **** up my phone so I cant get it to stock again. I dont care if a rom fails or something, but i always want to come back to stock if you know!
There are guides in the development section of this forum. I suggest you look there as this is a self help forum.
To get you started though look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=34192552

Thanks, will check into it What roms are you all using?
edit: oh and please someone answer me this. If im gonna root-kernel-rom, what is the best way to backup so I can get back to the OS and kernel I have? I dont care about photos apps and sms, just want to go back to software if it fails.
is firmware the same as kernel?
Something is missing in your formula root-(Flash Recovery)-kernel-rom. And in the new Recovery you can do a backup and only there. You can go either for TWRP or CWM recovery.
And if future, if you say "Thanks", better hit a Thanks button under post than write it your reply
