Yes, it works..

With instruction #6 I recommend: copy the original first to a secure folder on your SD-card, so as to be sure that, when something goes wrong, you can get it back...
Greetz,
kwarkje
EDIT: Question: do the bootanimations for 2.1 work on 2.3.3? Anybody knows that?

#9 found that the original one ticked R&W of the Owner line and Read of the other lines.
is it OK to tick all boxes?

I think it's ok.
made an bootanimation by myself.
the script of bootanimation is generic.

It's just a boot animation- nothing harmful so I doubt it wil effect your system.
The worst would be a very pixelated and slow boot animation if your desired boot animation is for LDPI (Lower Def) Devices.

do you know how to change the zdzihu's boot logo?
I'm quite sick with that ugly face(sorry for this, but I still respect zdzihu)
does that mean have to edit the RAMDISK?

I think i answered you're question already on private messages, but for other people with this question, just switch to an alternative like doomkernel, ThKernel etc.

You can always use this tool to change the bootanimation

quick question.
my bootanimation is the bios one i founf on this forum
did all i had to do and it works on my X10
BUT,
it doesnt load completely i get the (enter pin code) frame before its finished.
what i did was delete some pictures in the zip (the double frames (pics that look the same))
and renamed em all to follow in sequence seeing im pretty new to all this and wasnt sure if it was needed.
now its loading a bit further in the pictures cause i see more changes in the X time its loading.
now my point is can i edit/do something to make it finish and THEN enter the pin code or ? did i do something wrong.
uploaded it with total commander .. the permissions you talked about i didnt do that is that root explorer only or ?
thnx in advance

Sorry I'm not an expert in that field, sorry I don't know how to deal with that. Yeah the permissions are for root explorer but if another program supports permissions in that form, them it's for that other program as well.

I have a different boot animation on my phone and I'm not sure hot to apply it I don't have a pc so I want to do this straight through the phone I have sufb and astro file and the new boot animation shows up but I don't know where to put it any body know what I can do?
Willsnews
So just to be clear I have it on my phone but don't know how to switch between the stock and the new one x_x help me please I can't stand the stock animation t mobile gives
Willsnews
You want root explorer. First you want to extract the zip file that contains the boot animation that you want, using astro file manager. Then go into root explorer, and replace /system/media/bootsamsung.qmg and /system/media/bootsamsungloop.qmg
That will replace the video. The bootup sound is /system/etc/PowerOn.wav
replace those files with the one from the zip.
The shutdown video is a handful of image files located in /system/media/video/shutdown
and the shutdown sound is /system/media/audio/ui/Shutdown_128.ogg
Any other program other than root explorer cause I can't buy it cause I can't put it on my bill?
Willsnews
I have sufbs astro and andexplorer can I use those to do it?
Willsnews
Astro file manager doesn't give me a extract option but sufbs does but I guess I need ther root explorer for this cause I haven't had any luck any other way if you do know of a way to do this with the things I have listed it would be awesome to know and thanks for the reply x_x
Willsnews
I also do not have busybox wil that make a difference?
Willsnews
i tried a different approach but it worked for me.
i used root explorer and deleted the .PNG files from
/system/media/video/shutdown
then, i used VirtualDub (free download, just google it) and opened a gif that i wanted to use as my shutdown animation
once in virtualdub, go to file, export, image sequence and change the name to
shutdown_
for the number of digits in select 1
then change output to .PNG
click ok.
Go to the folder that you exported it to and select 14 consecutive images that you want to use and change the file names in order to shutdown_1, shutdown_2 etc....
move these files to your external sd card.
Now go back into root explorer and find these files. Select all of them and move them to system/media/video/shutdown.
You are done. With this method you can use any .gif you want so long as it has only 14 frames. I'm sure there is a way you can use more than 14 frames but I haven't figured that out yet.
I followed all these steps.
1) I'm rooted
2) Have Root Explorer
When I go to paste my new .png files over the old ones, everything seems fine. But when I check the files, they are still the old ones.
Also when I try and delete some of them, they appear gone for a second, then re-appear.
I've tried changing permissions for the files / folders, which appears to work. But then when I look at the permissions again, they have been set back to the way they were before.
Any help appreciated.
Mike
Same thing for me, I have no idea where to go from here, all i know is i will do anything it takes to never have to see that eye sore of a pink square t mobile bootup again... Someone help a brotha out

[Q] 2.1 Bootanimation

Has anyone figured out how to change the boot animation?
It seems it's stored in /system/media/bootanimation.zip
I tried replacing the .PNG images inside the archive and that didn't work, although I might have messed up something. I'm just glad to be rid of that dreadful SE color splash until someone else finds a solution.
finished playing with this a little while ago... when you replace the files you must use no compression, ie store. i've attached one with the android robot waving (cropped from nexus) simple, but at least the splash is gone

i finally found it for sure...from the zip above extract them all put your images in an then add in a zip file all of them again but you have to rename it as bootanimation.zip and you have to choose at winrar compression method store...its final and you can put anything you want...
Thank you for helping me sort this out.

1 root your phone
2 download rootexplorer(<---and install it) & any bootanimation.zip you want
3 open rootexplorer and go to your sdcard hold down your finger and choose copy
4 then go to system/media
5 at the upper of your root explorer its a button that says mount r/w make it says by pushing it mount r/o
6 push the button paste and then when it says ovewrite push yes
7 reboot and you r ready!!!!
if i make it a single file you will not have the option when the first animation is over the second to be anime it will be a still picture if you want that just leave one image in the second folder..because it have 2 phases of animation..!!!!(if you remember first when the colours where mixing and then the still image with sony ericsson logo and letters)
I've been trying to edit the desc.txt file so I can have a little more flexibility but even if I save it without making any changes it stops working.
After a look around the interwebs someone mentioned saving in the UNIX format, so I used Notepad ++ in UNIX and tried editing/saving in that but there's still problems, sometimes it doesn't work at all and sometimes it only shows the first folder.
Also, are there any limitations as to framerate and how many files can go in the part0/part1 folders (revision of enormous101's bootanimation.zip).
Finally, is it ok to add a part2?
do not use compression - use Winrar and select "store"

Nice thread!
I was wondering about the desc.txt file. I am using the Rogers 2.1 firmware and I want to remove the Rogers screen that shows up just before desktop loads. The PNG file for the Rogers screen is located in Anim5 and I was wondering if I just removed the entry for anim5 in the desc file, would that do the trick? I've already moved the original bootanimation.zip file onto my computer so it is backed up but I was just wondering if this would work. I am using a X10 but it seems like the file system is the same which is why I'm asking here. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks for your response! From what I've been reading, it seems that if I remove the entry for anim5 in the desc.txt, that it won't load that animation. It just seems easier to do this than to replace the image in that folder. Though the problem would then be making changes to a UNIX based txt file using a Windows OS and then the phone not recognizing the desc.txt file based on it being in the wrong format.
Anyway, I suppose I could just copy over the last image in anim4 and replace the one in anim5 with that and that would be the easier solution (as per your suggestion).
Here is the thread I was reading where it describes the desc.txt file and how to modify your boot animation.

Custom Boot Animations

For anyone wondering how to replace your bootanimation, just mount your system partition either with Clockwork Recovery or root explorer and push a bootanimation.zip to /system/customize/resource/TMUS_bootanimation.zip
Here are a couple you can use:
My Evo 4g Bootanimation Thread - Sorry some say Evo 4g.
SamJamz BootAnimation Thread
Basically any bootanimation from a phone that is 480x800 should fit just fine.

Do you push the file while in recovery mode? Kinda confused about that part.
Edit: Got it, yep, you have to be in recovery to accomplish this.

Our phones are a little bit different... our bootanimation is located at system/customize/resource and renamed bootanimation.zip to TMUS_bootanimation.zip I did all this thru root explorer no adb required!
just incase, I also copied the original file I was replacing to my sdcard (if ever I wanted to go back)
Hope this helps
Here's one of my favs, R2d2 boot animation. It's already named correctly, just use root explorer, and make sure the permission is right. Ahh, can't upload zip from the app, I will when I get to my cpu

I now have a sweet Android (Cyanogen theme - in prep for CM release ) boot animation in place of the lame stock "my" scribble.
Now all I'd like to do for boot is change the stock splash screen. I've found one to use, but the instructions for applying are for the Evo and not sure I want to risk jacking something up if it's not right. It states to use fastboot to flash the splash screen onto the phone, replacing the stock. To those who know - does that sound right? Where is the stock splash located so I can back it up to my sdcard first?
Any pointers appreciated!

I am also in root explorer and went thru the needed folders till I got to bootanimation folder. How do you paste the renamed animation into that folder? (don't want to screw it up) copy from my sd card and paste it into the folder? Do i paste it into the folder and then tap on (mount rw)? Or do I tap on (mount rw) then hit paste. Rookie worried I might screw it up if do it wrong.

[Q] Boot animation without AT&T logo?

Does anyone have a working bootanimation.zip without the AT&T logo? I tried editing the original one but I ended up with a blank boot animation screen.
you should be able to search the forum for whatever boot animation you want. Granted they won't be the proper resolution if you pick one with black edges you will be fine. I was using one on a previous flash just fine.

I tried those animations and they worked fine, but I still wish I could keep the original animation.
Boot Animations, while can be tricky and a headache, are customizable if you can adjust the image sizes, etc.
For example, the Motorola Atrix can use up to 540x960 for the resolution. You can also add custom sounds at load by saving an OGG audio file to /system/media (same location as the bootanimation.zip) and adding it accordingly to the desc.txt file. Below is an example.
Code:
540 960 1
p 1 10 part0
s autodestruct.ogg
p 0 0 part1
The first line is the resolution and the frames per second.
Code:
"540 960" Resolution "1" Frames Per Second (each individual image)
The second line defines a Part. For example, the first animation you want to play. So far for me, this is the animation AFTER the Dual Core logo that plays when I've made mine.
Code:
"p" Depicts this is a Part "1" Repeat this many times (0 is infinite) "10" is the delay in frames before the next Part "part0" is the directory within the zip to load this part from
So far easy right? The next line, is for the audio file. If the OGG has a loop point, the audio will loop until the Part is over that it plays within.
Code:
"s" Depicts a sound "autodestruct.ogg" The filename to load from /system/media
A few more examples of loading parts............
To load a Part that is a single image, that loops till boot is done, use this
Code:
p 0 0 "directory_name_here"
I'll try to post some example bootanimation.zip files with explanations if I get time. I've only made a couple so far for my company out of boredom.

I recommend using your file explorer to rename the original bootanimation.zip on your phone to something like bootanimation_original.zip then put in your custom if you have any worries.
That way, if you go to update just rename custom to bootanimation_custom.zip and restore the original.
Personally, I do not know if the boot animation file will affect updates, but that is a failsafe for you just in case.

My bad mate, forgot to mention that. I make mine with Winzip 15 Pro and set it to No Compression (from my experience, no compression is a requirement).
I may end up doing a tutorial on all this on my blog. If I do, I'll post a copy here and link as well (I like screenshots on my blog, lol).

Just find a boot animation that you like, download the zip file, rename it to bootanimation.zip and then go into your system/media folder and change the name of the current bootanimation to anything you want like bootanimationold.zip. Then put the new zip file in the system/media folder and there you go. You do not need to move the old boot animation file as long as you change the name.
of course, the method I'm describing is relevant if you have rooted your phone and you have something like Root Explorer, otherwise you will need to use adb, but still you need root.

Then put the new zip file in the system/media folder and there you go. You do not need to move the old boot animation file as long as you change the name.
of course, the method I'm describing is relevant if you have rooted your phone and you have something like Root Explorer, otherwise you will need to use adb, but still you need root.

Thank you, worked like a champ... Is there an explorer I can use on my PC while my phone is connected? I attempted to use droid explorer but I can't access any of the folders.

Sorry, wouldn't know about that, I always use Explorer or adb.

Ohh, so what you want is the default bootanimation without the ATT part!
I've personally never worked with bootanimations before, but using MrSER's guide above, i'll try to do that for you.
EDIT: yea... I only get the blackscreen too, really weird...
EDIT 2: figured it out. if you're using WinRAR, when you go to make a .zip, choose "store" instead of "normal" compression, and it should work just fine. I have attached the Default bootanimation.zip without the ATT part

it is correct the desc.txt (for xperia X8 its "320 480" without quotes) also the folders are correctly named and the zip file is in /data/local with the right permissions aswell.
using "adb push bootanimation.zip /data/local"
all that i end up with is a quick boot logo then black screen until the keypad for pin code comes up.
Here is the bootanimation file btw: Bootanimation.zip
UPDATE: saw now it said "part1" and "part2" in desc.txt even tho i didnt type that, so i changed that, pushed file and still same same but lil different =/
Btw ive searched all over XDA and i found a post that said it can be placed inside /system/customize/resource/
is that correct is it it way way waaaay off ?
Yeah we have tried alot off stuff but nothing helps. So please someone help us !!
Problem is your desc.txt
You need to use linux to edit it (or any editor that doesn't use CRLF for separating lines)
Don't make separate lines between the data.
Attachment may help.
I used the Text Editor in Root Explorer, but maybe the problem is, that the bootanimation.zip has to be a store-only-zip,compressed ones won´t work

Thanks for help dx, tho it went to a complete black screen as before.
im using ubuntu 11 on a virtualbox inside wintendo btw.
no idea why this dont work as intended but curse the one who ever gives up, through hard times you learn
Use notepad++ (or Linux )
Use STORE method when creating zip.
@Baronen, I'm responding to your PM here so i can help others too.. the problem with the animation you sent me by PM is that it's compressed.. When you pack it you need to be sure that the compression is set to "0" or "store", depending on what program you are using..

This happens when the desc.txt has an error or is malformed.. As DX said, you need to use a specific editor, notepad won't do it.. You can use notepad++ but you have to configure it so it treats text like unix.
PIC: http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/7074/notepadj.png
Some other tips:
Always convert your images to 256 colors
Don't use more than 12/15 FPS
Try not to use the native device resolution (320x480), even with low fps the animation will get slow.. take the ones on froyobread for ex, they are slow because the images are at 320x480 (yeah i will fix them when i have a bit of time)
EDIT: goonsquadx8, just saw your desc.txt file, you have blank lines between the arguments

I usually put my animation in the media folder in froyo bread and it works...only thing I do is make a copy of the zip file and will name the two zip files bootanimation_cm6.zip and bootanimation_cm7.zip....and will keep these both files in system>media folder....
when making the animation I usually takes the dimensions of the picture around 256x256 pix...also in the text file I write 320 480 as my resolution...this will help to stretch my pic to full screen......
Okey thanks everyone it works fine now !!!!
XDA is the best

Are you sure that they work? I haven't tried them but i noticed that the desc.txt files have blank lines between the arguments and i'm not sure if android likes those filenames... For ex, you named them xxxx_280x420.png and i think that the number sequence "xxxx" must be at the end of the name, although i can be totally wrong
Anyway, one thing you can do is to reduce the color number to 256 and those 3MB files will drop to half a kilobyte
